Mande Matthews is the author of the ShadowLight Saga. Her debut novel is "Bonded" - book one of the ya epic fantasy trilogy. A free prequel to the ShadowLight Saga, entitled "The LightKeepers" is now available for free at most online retailers.

While attending a performing arts college for writing and arranging, Mande discovered Joseph Cambell's Masks of God series. Her desire to understand humanity through myth and legend mingled with her love of fantasy fiction, birthing her life-long quest to create original new worlds for readers.

A hermit at heart, Mande recedes into the realms of imagination where she occasionally surfaces to face the real world aided by her minions: a husband who plays the dog drum (the belly of their border collie), and a menagerie of furred, feathered and mostly magical friends.

I've waited a long time for this sequel and it was well worth the wait. Matthews does a fabulous job, once again, in bringing us into her imaginative world and creating a place that seems real to us, using the characters we became familiar with in the previous books. This time Astrid (Swan) and Hallad are fighting to keep the peace while evil forces are secretly trying to trip them up along the way. All of our regular favorites are brought back to the cast and each one has their own little battle to fight, while at the end they all collide to create a huge disaster in the making. Can our band of warriors save their world and can they all survive the battle? The ending had me very surprised and waiting (impatiently!) for the next book.

If you love fantasy, then you have to read this series. It is a much faster read then the epic fantasy novels but just as enjoyable. And I have to mention that Mande Matthews has a wonderful way of writing, one of the best writers I have read- she doesn't go overboard with the "elder world" speak and the editing is spot on. Her books are a joy to read. This series is one that can be enjoyed by teens to adults. I think some of the content is meant more teenage and up.. Please start with the free prequel to acquaint yourself with the basic storyline and go from there. You won't be sorry and you will have a whole new world to explore!

Well let's just say when it ended I was a little bit upset that there was nothing else to read and I'll have to wait for the next one! :)
It's just a really good sequence to the first book, which kept me hooked and wanting to know more.
A fast paced read, a lot of angst and doubt, a lot of trickery... Some of which was kind of obvious to me, but a lot of which wasn't, and fooled me right up until the very end! :)
The characters are also evolving, some for the better and some for the worse, but a lot of them are changing, which makes a lot of sense considering they're mostly teenagers (or so)...

The one thing that *kinda* bothers me though is, that instead of 'no' they say 'nei'. That would be fine most of the time, but all the time? I keep reading nei instead of no! aaah!! lol. Sorry, it's just a tiny quirk of mine. I get what it means and what it's supposed to be, but I keep reading it in my mind and it clashes with the rest of the phrases...

I had fun! I recommend it to those who like a bit of fantasy and song :)

Mande Matthews has done it again! Broken, sequel to the brilliantly-written, Bonded was exactly what I have been waiting for. Surely, it is worth the long wait Mande has put her fans through. ;)

I first read Bonded, when I started blogging for the first time, Mande Matthews was one of the first Authors I had asked to do a guest-post on Starry-eyed Heart Reviews. She was also one of the Authors who inspired me, to continue blogging about books and giving me the confidence I needed. I remember falling for her creative writing, elegant story-telling, and the ability to pull readers in to this, indescribable, other-world. After finishing Broken, I was reminded, again, of as to why I became one of her fan.

Astrid (Swan) and her twin brother, Hallad, are back and with more burden than ever. Everything Astrid was told growing up, was that she was of light, that she and her brother are protectors of their world. But, after rescuing Emma (their other sister) and being in the Palace, where she is not allowed to express herself, Astrid, find herself giving in for a moment of comfort with the Shadows. Her connection, her bond, with her twin has also become a problem, when Hallad finds himself attracted to a woman and Astrid is not able to do anything about the visions,- the emotions, that are not of her own.

The characters are more developed, and I loved learning more about Astrid, and for a change, having the story told in her POV. Back in the first installment, we were introduced to her, but because she was unable to speak, we were more in sync with Hallad's thoughts and emotions. Now, that we get to invade Astrid's thoughts, we learn that she is more feisty than would imagined, and that her emotions and feelings are complicated. You would not have been able to tell, given her well calm and collected outer-demeanor. That she has her own thoughts and opinions makes me favor her even more. As it was exciting to see a new side of Astrid, it was just the same for Hallad. You see a more laid-back guy who loves his sister, instead of Astrid being the one to calm him down, it seems their roles has switched.

Emma and Erik are the couple that brings the romance elements to this book, and their relationship is very passionate. Though, as with any couple, they face a few misunderstandings; making their journey a bumpy one.

Oh, the thought of waiting for the release of the third book! *Sigh* The ending was SO riveting and heart-breaking, I cannot wait to find out what happens to Astrid and Hallad! Just the thought of it, is making me over-excited!

Overall, a bit slow in the beginning, but once the action hits you, you'll be begging for more. I could not have asked for a better sequel! If you have not checked out Mande Matthews, first installment, Bonded, what are you waiting for?

I thought this was the end

There were sentences where I was confused about which character was doing what but not very often. The story lagged somewhat in the middle but picked up at the end. I liked it enough that I want to know how it all finishes.

I was definitely not as impressed with the second book as I was the first. Of course a lot of that has to do with Eric. I find that he really does make the story a struggle to stay interested.
