Shelby Nichols #18

Presumed Dead

The stakes have never been higher. Shelby must save the man she loves... or die trying.

A simple search-and-rescue mission sends Shelby into the woods, where she stumbles on a long-dead secret. Add a spur-of-the-moment trip to San Francisco that goes horribly wrong, and Shelby is in a race against time. Good thing she’s got friends who are willing to help, but even that may not be enough to save the man she loves. In a game of secrets and shadows, Shelby must trust her instincts, or lose everything.

USA TODAY and Wall Street Journal Bestselling author Colleen Helme offers a clever mix of mystery, laugh-out-loud humor, and page-turning adventure in the highly acclaimed Shelby Nichols Adventure Series.

I have read the whole series at least four times and will read it again and again. It is one of the best series I have ever read. I really love Ramos. I can't wait for the next book!! - Amazon Reviewer

I’ve really had a good time with this series. There are so many “serious” or “heavy” books out there, and this series is a break. It’s popcorn lit, and sometimes, that’s what we need. Light, fun, and sometimes a little improbable, but it’s definitely a series I look forward to reading. I like the family dynamic, the tension, and the crazy situations. I’m looking forward to Shelby’s next adventure. - Amazon Reviewer

This series has elements of paranormal, mob, comedy, romance, action, and family drama. I love all the characters, and I highly recommend this series. Colleen Helme has become one of my favorite authors. - Amazon Reviewer

Perfect for fans of Dawn Merriman, Amanda M Lee, Wendy Wang, and Lily Harper Hart.

I have really enjoyed this series. As usual, this was fun and fast paced, and kept me interested throughout.

What I am starting to have an issue with is Shelby's relationship with Ramos. While it started out fun and flirty, it's starting to cross a line for me.

All in all, though, it is still an entertaining read.

I'm not sure what more I can say about this series other than the fact that it truly is one of my favorites. It is a wonderfully built world with fantastic characters that I have more than grown to love over the course of the last 18 books. OMG! 18 books! It feels like just yesterday that we were at the first few books - I don't even know how we got to 18 - but boy have I enjoyed the ride.

I am going to say something that I probably shouldn't, but unfortunately, feel that I must. At the beginning of this series, I enjoyed the UST and banter that was starting to grow between Shelby and Ramos. At one point (very early on) I even wondered what it would be like if Shelby ended up with him (because you HAVE to admit, he is extremely HOT). But then, I'm not exactly sure when it happened (I could probably go back through my reviews) but I realized that it would be the absolute WORST thing in the world if Shelby ever acted on her attraction to Ramos. I mean, it is completely okay that Shelby feels these emotions - she is only human - but she also has so much to lose. I remember writing in a review that I had come full circle from wanting Shelby to end up with Ramos, to realizing what it would do to her, and to so many others, if she ever acted on those impulses.

So - knowing that, I was a little bothered during this book. I've already said that there is nothing wrong with Shelby feeling the feelings that she does. And Ramos, he makes the most of the flirtation, I think because he knows that it is safe - that Shelby would never act on whatever is between the two. The whole, motorcycle riding, flirty banter....all okay. But yet, Chris was kidnapped this time. He was missing and Shelby had no idea if he was alive or dead. He could have been being tortured for every single minute of every day - she just did not know.

To me, that kinda changes things. To me, that is not the time to get excited while riding on a motorcycle with Ramos. Not the time to engage in the flirty banter.....it just felt......wrong. I kept thinking, "if something were to happen to Chris, if he didn't make it out of this, she would never forgive herself" I don't know. Maybe it's just me. For the first time, instead of lightly chuckling when the two of them did their thing, it actually annoyed me. And since it was annoying, I seemed to notice it more and more. It felt like it was happening more and more - but again, maybe because it was bothering me and I noticed it more.

There was also one thing - Ramos lays his hand over Shelby's hand on the table when they are at the Chinese restaurant. The Chinese restaurant where Chris might have been held. The restaurant that they were assuming was completely covered with camera monitoring that Jade was working at. Jade, whom Chris had told all about his wife, and how much he loved her. All about his kids, and their life together. Heck, he even told Jade about their dog Coco.

It was brief and it was platonic -I'm sure. But, it made my stomach hurt and that has NEVER happened before. So - I loved the book. I love Shelby, Chris, Dimples, Uncle Joey and yes, I love Ramos too. Always have. This was probably just a me thing, but if you can't put down your feelings in your own review, how else can you get them out?

Also, as usual, I listened to this on audio and I would be remiss if I didn't mention the narrator -Wendy Tremont King - and what a fantastic job she does. She has become the voice of this series for me and I look forward to listening to her each and every time.

So now, the wait for book 19 begins.

I wanted to give this story 10 stars! it was that good!

After waiting patiently for book 18 to come out, I wasn’t disappointed! Colleen Helme has written characters that are fun, sassy, sexy and entertaining! Since I started reading this series each of the books have entertained to the point I want to read the next adventures of Shelby, Ramos and Uncle Joey and their family and friends. It was unexpected but nice to read where it wasn’t Shelby to get in trouble, but that she did find a way to be in thick of things no matter how. Thank you Colleen and I look forward to reading about Shelby’s next adventure!

Presumed dead is another excellent book in the Shelby Nichols line up

Whenever there's a new Shelby Nichols book up for pre-order, I don't hesitate to place my order - because I know I will binge read the book the moment it is released.

If you've not read any books in the series, you absolutely need to read the first book in the series: Carrots. That book explains all about the world and characters in the series. I would even recommend reading the books in order.

In this book, Shelby faces three different "cases" her husband goes missag. She finds a dead body and has to solve that mystery and a case for Uncle Joey. Yes - there is also Ramos - no book would be complete without Ramos, Dimples, and who doesn't love a mob boss?

There is a lot going on in Colleen Helme's newest Shelby Nichols and it is magnificent. A soon to be divorcee who wants her husband dead, a ghost who needs help, and a kidnapping (and it isn't Shelby this time). Shelby and both of her teams have a big job in addressing each of the mysteries and one of them hits really close to home, except that it takes place in San Francisco. Shelby has to stand up to the leader of a major Chinese Syndicate, convince Detective Bates to put his neck on the line on just her word, and find evidence on a truly evil man. Not quit a normal challenge even for Shelby.

what a thrill ride

I seriously love a new Shelby adventure and Presumed Dead was amazingly awesome, fast-paced and action packed.
One of the things I love the most is Shelby’s ability to juggle, home, family, uncle Joey, Ramos, Dimples lol she has a lot of balls in the air but in the end everything always works out alright.
Each and every mystery might give a few heart attacks along the way but they are totally worth it to get to the end.

Amazing!!!

I absolutely loved "Presumed Dead"!!! It was a roller coaster ride from start to finish and I couldn't put it down! I don't know how Colleen does it, but each book is better than the last and I can't get enough of Shelby Nichols and Co! Wow! When will the next one come out?

Who is this person pretending to be Shelby Nichols?

The beginning of the book is as we know it. Something ordinary happens and chaos ensues. When Shelby goes back to get her jacket, what happens? More chaos and the destruction of a crime scene of course. Then Shelby and Chris unexpectedly go to San Francisco and a Shelby clone replaces Shelby as we know her. This clone doesn't know how to make decisions, this clone doesn't know how to react in difficult situations especially without thinking about it or without help. She seems to be fearful not to say timid and cautious (Shelby cautious? Yeah right). But she knows how to make a plan and then... wait and see. And plan again. And wait and see once more.

I don't want to spoil that's why I'm being so vague, but I find the whole situation is not tangible and not believable and that is saying something, because we know, Shelby Nichols tramples, stumbles and above all rushes from one unbelievable situation to the next. I had trouble not zoning out during the long-winded not to say boring action in San Francisco even when narrator Wendy Tremont King did a very good job as usual (only with 1.1x speed, otherwise I can't listen to it, funny isn't it?). The story in San Francisco is just so not connected or important to the rest. In fact for me it feels like it's inserted to - I don't know fill up space? I get that the situation was perhabs more frightening than usual, but Shelby could still swoon over Ramos and be excited to ride a bike (she had to be in this clone somewhere, but then I bet she would have kicked its ass). Oh and she could buy some souvenirs while contemplating the situation and doing a little more waiting. And when the situation was solved, it was like all's well that ends well. I'm glad you're back and not hurt (that was the least credible as far as I'm concerned). Does anyone want a box of chocolate or two? So it was not that Shelby was excessively anxious or some such, she was just normal *shudder* After their return home the story and the case there continued as if nothing had happened.

I'm not talking about the plot holes and the missed opportunities here , but I seriously contemplated to not finish this book during the episode in San Francisco. I could only hold strong because I adore Shelby and her shenanigans. I just hope it didn't lose its magic, but I'm not sure if I will continue this series.

Presumed Dead by Colleen Helme is yet another thrilling installment in the Shelby Nichols series, and I must say, this one really takes the cake! Helme weaves together a tapestry of suspense, humor, and relatable characters that keep you hooked from start to finish. What I particularly enjoyed about this book is the variety of cases Shelby encounters. Each mystery adds an exciting layer to the story, making it feel like a wild ride filled with unexpected twists and turns. I loved how these cases interlinked, showcasing Shelby's unique problem-solving skills and her ability to juggle multiple challenges at once. It’s a true testament to Helme’s talent in crafting an engaging plot! Shelby continues to be an endearing protagonist, and I appreciate her evolution throughout the series. Her witty banter and strong sense of justice make her a character you can't help but root for. While I thoroughly enjoyed the book, I felt that some plot points could have been developed a bit more, leaving me wanting a deeper dive into certain characters’ backstories. However, this minor quibble doesn't overshadow the overall enjoyment I had with this read. If you’re a fan of cozy mysteries with a touch of humor and a strong, relatable heroine, I highly recommend Presumed Dead. It's a fantastic addition to Shelby’s adventures, and I can’t wait to see what Colleen Helme has in store for us next!

loved every word

I read every book in this series. This one exceeded all the others. It made me laugh when someone met an odd “kitty”. It was fast paced action but not rushed in any way. As always there are several different storylines along with the main one and each gets fully completed.

Her son assists her when his gaming partner needs help only Shelby talents can provide. At the same time Shelby and hubby get pulled into danger that also pulls in Uncle Joey and Ramos. And a husband’s murder is solved as well as several other unrelated old murders. Shelby also makes a new friend.

Very exciting, intriguing storylines, lots of different types of action. That is the great thing about this series. Many authors tell one storyline in a book. But this series and especially this story, the storylines are multifaceted and thoroughly defined. The common denominator is they all happen in the course of Shelby Nichols getting involved with her amazing but not over the top outrageous gifts.

It takes her brain to pull all the clues in some semblance of order and we go along on the journey. The fun part is how she gets the clues. Highly recommend this series and especially this book. It is a FANTASTIC read. I look forward to every book!

The Shelby Nichols series continues to amaze me with unique storylines and emotional roller coasters. It’s hard to be that a suburban housewife with psychic abilities can get into so much trouble and a mob boss loves the ground she walks upon!

“Presumed Dead” is a fast paced installment taking Shelby and her husband to San Francisco in a business/ vacation getaway. Unfortunately, Chris is the one who gets into trouble when he is held hostage by the Chinese mob. Oh boy, Uncle Joey and Ramos are definitely going to be needed on this one.

Additionally, at the start of our story, Shelby gets skunked when she and Josh rescue a 2 year old boy. She also finds the bones of a dead teenager. She is determined to find out who this child was and how ho killed him. As we all know when Sh by has her mind made up she will get the job done.

This was such a great installment. It packed full of drama, surprises and touching scenes. There are also plenty of moments that include the characters we have grown to love.

Now, I just have to be patient for the next book. That’s always the hardest part!

Can't believe I've read 18 of these. There are some things I don't like about this series, but every time a new one comes out, I'm sucked back into it. Shelby is kind of a ding-dong. She works for both the police and a mob boss, and she's okay about that. And then there's Ramos, the fixer, who is apparently so gorgeous that every woman who sees him drools, including Shelby (who is married and still resisting the attraction). All of this makes me roll my eyes and wonder why I'm reading another one.

But the mystery, suspense, and action are great. And most of the other characters are quirky and intriguing. So read them, I do. Recommended for 18+ readers (due to language and closed door intimacy). I give it 4 stars.

Shelby puts it all on the line for family and friends, but this book actually pushes Shelby to a new level.
That skunk issue was a whole new level of how your family, friends, and strangers think of you regardless if you stepped in for the greater cause.
Although she thinks about how hot Ramos is, she truly loves her husband and is ready to mess some folks up for using him.
I wasn't sure how they were gonna get Chris back. Talk about the skin of your teeth type of situation. Frankly, I would have put a bullet in Lee's foot for his deceitful behavior. As for the stupidhead that got Chris into the situation in the first place, wouldn't have been saved in my book, but that is the vendictive side of me.
As for the cold case murder of the young boy nearly broken my heart. I was nervous for Josh to participate in this, and I am glad things worked out for him and his friend.

Amazing!!!!

I absolutely adore this series . I've read it multiple times and I can never get enough . I adore all the characters and Shelby is just fantastic always getting into trouble . I won't lie in holding out a secret hope that the human remos and Chris learn to share Shelby . Alittle reverse harem as they realise she loves them both and needs them both so much . God I think that would be perfect as they respect each other and both love her . Maybe a novel of them both needing to team up to save Shelby . I am greedy and praying for the next book so please don't take too long . Honestly collen helme is a master of an author and you truly won't be disappointed in her books . I've got all my book friends onto this series !

I love Shelby Nichols and I just adore Colleen Helme for bringing her to life. In this episode Shelby has a few adventures, staring with finding the remains of a boy who was murdered and left in a cave, to San Francisco where her husband is kidnapped by the Chinese Mafia to back home where she gets involved in solving yet another murder and circling back to the first murder when that killer kidnaps Shelby's son! Oh and Uncle Joey wins a bet with her and Ramos and makes them go skydiving with him! This book was so much fun and I spent today reading it. I regret nothing except that it's over. I'll just have to settle for looking forward to the next book.

Another great adventure with Shelby and the crew!

Wow!! This was a fantastic read. Lots going on. Love the storylines and the interactions of the characters. These folks are tight. Their bonds and loyalty true. Love the way the story unfolds. Colleen has a unique way of weaving her stories with Shelby at the helm. Doesn't matter if it's working with the police or the mob. I enjoy each new adventure. I'm already impatiently awaiting the next book. Thanks so much for the hours of enjoyment I experience getting lost in the adventures with Shelby.

A Great Read!

What a GREAT READ. Fast paced and wonderful characters. I never want this series to end. Plus there was so much more in this book than usual. With four different mysteries to solve Shelby was kept very busy and in danger when it came to solving them. Just the way we like it to keep the edge of suspense up. The only problem I have with this book is that whomever proof reads it is not doing their job very well. Many words missing or an extra one placed wrong, plus a paragraph that was probably supposed to be deleted. Otherwise great book.

Three Mysteries to Solve!

Shelby literally trips over a dead body! While at Thrasher Development she hears about a man who owes Uncle Joey a major amount of money. The man turns up dead. Shortly after that, she goes on a business trip with her husband, Chris, and someone gets kidnapped by the Chinese Syndicate. Shelby has her work cut out for her but is she up to it? Each mystery gets very personal to Shelby. can she handle the emotional stress? I really enjoyed this entry into the life of Shelby Nichols.

Simply the Best!

Colleen Helme writes the best stories! Shelby Nichols is an outstanding heroine! Together with her husband Chris, her kids, Uncle Joey and Ramos it is a roller coaster of an adventure! You could read any of the books as a standalone, but why would anyone do that? Start with the first book “Carrots” and you will see Shelby grow as a wife, mother and an individual and you will fall in love with the whole cast of characters!

Colleen Helme never fails

I have read and reread every book in the Shelby Nichols Adventure series and wait impatiently for the next installment. Her characters are so well written, with depth of feeling and true to life flaws and traits that you can’t help empathize with the heroes at the storylines this author so cleverly weaves. Perfect balance of suspense, mystery and romance. Excellent storytelling!

Don’t read this book in the evening

Don’t read this book in the evening because you will end up staying up all night. This was the most exciting entry into the Shelby Nichols series! There were 2, no 3 major threads to this book. They all got wrapped up and the ending was really unexpected! There is so much going on in this book! Read it, but take the weekend so that you don’t risk falling asleep at work!

4.5⭐ I adore this series and its characters, especially the interactions between Shelby and Ramos. I find Chris boring/dull so ,yep, I'm team Ramos. The multiple plot lines move at a steady pace and are written well. The only reason I took off 1/2 ⭐ is because if someone had used my missing key to enter my home, I would have immediately changed all locks. That being said, I can't wait for the next Shelby adventure.

nothing like loved ones in danger….

A jumble of odd circumstances as Shelby goes to San Francisco with her husband for a quick business meeting that turns into Chris being used as a pawn between a scheming businessman and the Triad; and back home, human remains found in a side quest (when Shelby falls through a hole in the woods) result in Shelby’s son Josh being tied up and threatened with death by a two-time murderer.

The Beginning

The start was so off-putting that I decided to stop reading. A woman was contemplating killing her husband to avoid paying off his debts. Instead of offering support and helping her find an alternative solution, Shelby intervened and told the woman she would be held accountable if her husband died. This action seemed to make the woman’s situation worse, possibly due to her interest in Shelby’s crush.

I can no longer stand Shelby.

OMG Loved Ever Word

The first time I read one of your books, Carrots that started it all. I read it from beginning to end. I did the same thing but I was so tired I was late for work, so worth it. This book covered so much. The adventure, suspense, love, wonderful and family. I’ve been addicted to this series since the 1st book. The only thing that drives me crazy is having to wait for the next one. I just want to say Thank You for writing all your Amazing books.

Outstanding Series

The first book Carrots was an Amazon suggested read. I read the synopsis and was so intrigued I purchased all 18 books currently available in the series. I was hooked from day one and could hardly put the books down. Yes it’s a bit fantasy, but what if it could happen? I love this series and hope there will be more soon. I highly recommend this series if you like intrigue, a bit of clairvoyance, intuition, ESP with a mob boss and an extra handsome hitman.

As usual…I loved the story!

Colleen,

You have such an awesome way of bringing your characters to life. I could just picture the poor, skinny, terrified Finn and his big, mean, redneck father.

And let’s not forget Ramos, our hotter than hot hit man who I’m sure all of your readers fantasize about! Every good looking man I see, I think “I wonder if Ramos looks like him?”

Please post a picture of him for us!!!

Enjoyable series and love the main characters.

I can’t believe I just read 18 books in a row and didn’t get tired of the storylines or characters. That should tell you something.

I fell in love with all of the main characters, even the mob boss. The cases that she investigates were always entertaining and interesting. My only complaint would be that, yes she does stupid things sometimes, but “everything always turns out in the end”.
