Fallen: A paranormal women's fiction novella

Rate this book
A mysterious recluse. A muscle for hire. United by an enemy unseen for centuries.

Lotte wears the costume of a small town, shop owner like a protective second skin. Play the part of a middle-aged, workaholic woman and you'll fade into the background. There’s safety in keeping her distance–not that her family left her much choice. But when a challenger threatens the peace she's worked hard to maintain, Lotte's competitive side comes out, putting her shop–and her heart–on center stage.

Joaquin is a cavalier mercenary who lives for dark humor. Motorcycles, his pack, and a side gig as a supernatural bouncer keep him busy. But when a gorgeous woman with secrets as deep as the shadows begins to haunt his dreams, the past threatens to resurface–and that ain’t happening under his watch.

Fallen is the prequel novella in the Four Crowns series. This bonus story centers on finding love later-in-life, slow burn romance between star-crossed lovers, and has mild language with a little snark.

Fallen is an riveting series starter, and there aren't enough exclamation marks to emphasise my love of this new world and it's characters!!! As it is a debut work, I knew that every facet of the book was going to be a surprise for me, and happily, my list of positives is long!

I loved the author's succinct writing style, her occassional humourous lines and clever use of phrasing. Sometimes sentences were brilliantly pared back but to me that added strength to each situation they were applied to. They also contributed to the engrossingly dry, gritty narrative, and allowed the friendly banter between protagonists to shine.

The mystery surrounding the core group was another appealing aspect for me - it kept me glued to the page, following conversations and thoughts carefully, looking for clues. As the book is written in alternating first person POV's, I felt able to get into the minds of the MC's, to build an immediate and strong connection to them.

They all have vague histories, leading some to deliberate isolation and loneliness, and others to established friendships - all very intriguing! If these histories were unpacked in future books I certainly wouldn't complain!

The antagonists were interesting too, in a cruel, determined, self absorbed way. Not the type of customer I would want in my bar or candle shop.

The sneak peek into the next book tucked away at the end of this one has whet my appetite for more from the talented author and I am eagerly awaiting it's release.
