About the author

Her writing focuses on contemporary social issues. She is a perceptive observer of the changing urban milieu and her writing closely examines the contemporary Bengali middle class. Crisis in human relationships and the changing values of the present era along with degeneration of the moral fibre of the society in the backdrop of globalisation and consumerism are depicted in her prose. Exploitations and sufferings of women regardless of their social or economic identities find a distinct voice in her writing. While she is famous for her writing on women's issues, she does not consider herself as a feminist. She took up many odd jobs in her early youth and finally joined the public service which she left in 2004 to become a fulltime writer. Her long career is reflected in many of her stories and novels.

Over the past two decades, Suchitra has written about 24 novels and a large number of short stories in different leading Bangla literary magazines. Some of her acclaimed novels are Kachher Manush (Close to Me), Dahan (The Burning), Kacher Dewal(The Wall Of Glass), Hemonter Pakhi(Bird of Autumn), Neel Ghurni, Aleek Shukh(Heavenly happiness), Gabhir Ashukh (A Grave Illness), Uro Megh(Flying Cloud), Chhera Taar, Alochhaya(Shadows Of Light), Anyo Basanto(Another Spring), Parabas, Palabar Path Nei, Aami Raikishori, Rangin Pritibi and Jalchhobi among others. Her novels and short stories have been translated into many Indian languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Oriya, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi and English. She also writes novels and short stories for children. Her novel Dahan was made into a movie by famous Bengali director, Rituparno Ghosh.

আড়াই তারা। প্রমিসিং স্টার্ট, খানিক পরে গল্পের নৌকাডুবির সাথে গল্পডুবি! যুদ্ধ-বিগ্রহের কপচপানির লাইনে না যেয়ে অরুণাশ্বর কেন্দ্রিক গল্পের ঘূর্ণন হলে বোধকরি মঙ্গলকর হত। মোটামুটি

I think i was 7 or 8 years old when this was coming out in the Monthly Anandamela.


My mother bought it in some station when we were traveling or something like that.

I managed to read only one chapter of that, and growing up almost forgot every part of it. . . .



anyway, finally after so many years, I finished it, and I am glad I did so.


It's a BREEZE actually. The story telling is so simple and the flow is so smooth, anyone can finish it in one-go. Though predictable, it's writing about the historical times doesn't dull your senses. Nor does its natural and authentic poetic anachronisms.

I wish I had completed in my childhood.

And co-incidentally, this is so strange that all the story books I am reading are Historical Fiction and Bengali. First Mahakaler Mandir, then Shei Somoi\, and now this!!

this story is about a 18 year old boy name Arunashwa,who is convicted of killing his father, and his journey through the times and land of eastern India in the times of the splendor of golden age of Bengal (then called GOUDA), in the times of kings like Ballalsen and Lakhansen. . . . .!

শরদিন্দুবাবুর সদাশিব সিরিজটি পড়ার পরে মনের মধ্যে ঐতিহাসিক অ্যাডভেঞ্চার কাহিনির এমন একটা বেঞ্চমার্ক তৈরী হয়ে গেছে যে না চাইতেও তুলনা চলেই আসে। সেই তুলনার নিরিখে হোক কি নিরপেক্ষ আলোচনার সাপেক্ষেই হোক, "ভাঙা ডানার পাখি"-এর ডানা শেষ অবধি ভাঙা হয়েই রইল। উড়তে পারল না।
কেন্দ্রীয় চরিত্র অরুণাশ্ব বল্লালসেনের আমলে প্রথম রোমথা হয়ে কীভাবে নিজের বিপর্যস্ত ভাগ্যকে সামাল দিল সেই নিয়েই কাহিনি। তবে পুরোটা পড়ার পর এটাই মনে হল যে অরুণাশ্বের কন্ট্রিবিউশন একেবারেই নগণ্য। সেটা এই ধরনের কাহিনিতে একেবারেই কাম্য নয়। কেন্দ্রীয় চরিত্রের নিজস্ব অ্যাডভেঞ্চার না থাকলে জমে না। এছাড়াও বইটির নামকরণ এমনতর করার জন্য যে ঘটনার আশ্রয় নিয়েছেন লেখিকা, সেটিও প্লটের নিরিখে একেবারে insignificant।
এছাড়াও প্রিয় লেখিকার স্বভাবসিদ্ধ ফিচেল ভাষায় প্রয়োগ এই মেজাজের কাহিনিতে একেবারে বেখাপ্পা লেগেছে। "ফস করে বলল, পুট করে বলে ফেলল" - এসব ঐতিহাসিক কাহিনিতে চলে না একেবারেই।
তবে ইতিহাস, পরিবেশ/প্রকৃতি ইত্যাদি বর্ণনার বাহুল্যবর্জিত লেখনীর জন্য ২০০ পাতা নিমেষে শেষ হয়ে যাবে। আরাম করে পড়ার বই, হার্ডকোর ঐতিহাসিক কাহিনির কঠিন ঘটনাক্রম মনে রাখার মতোন বেশি মনোযোগ দাবি করে না। সেকেন্ড হ্যান্ড পেলে কিংবা আমার মতোন লাইব্রেরীতে পেলে তবে পড়ুন। ফ্রেশ কপি গুচ্ছের দাম দিয়ে কিনে পড়ার মতোন নয়।

সেই ছোটবেলায় আনন্দমেলার পুরোনো বইগুলোই পড়েছিলাম। কিছু অংশ হারিয়ে গেছিল। তখন কত খুঁজেছি বইটা। এখন পড়ে ভালো লাগলো ছোটবেলার মতোই। সব বই তো এরম হয়না!
