Don't Give a Cluck: A Small Town Romantic Comedy

Rate this book
Nix - yes, just Nix, like Cher or Madonna just not as famous or rich or stylish - has nested in Tuft Swallow for the spring. Traveling the country for the last decade with nothing but her beat-up pick-up truck, a well-loved travel trailer, and a snarky, no nonsense attitude, has suited her free-bird soul just fine. She knows that this town and these people are just five-minute friends on her way to her next adventure. Nice to meet you! Okay, bye!

Until a scared cat, a campground in need, and a sexy, broody bookseller capture her attention in ways she wasn't prepared for.

Thayer Longspur, former Architect Under 30 to watch, has given up his blueprints to run The Plot Chickens, his grandparents' used book in tiny Tuft Swallow. Voted Most Likely to Succeed in his high school yearbook, Thayer is stuck between the expectations of the architectural world and his family. Thayer is trying to decide if a bird in hand (the bookstore) is better than two in the bush (finishing his Masters Degree) when an impish dervish whirls into his store and life. Every time he turns around, Nix is there pecking at his grumpiness and resolve to leave.

While these two are deciding whether to nest for good or fly the coop, they can't help but get caught up in town politics, cornhole, an out of control campfire, and each other. Nothing wrong with two consenting adults enjoying each other, right? As long as expectations are set at the beginning.

One of them stays but wants to go; the other wants to stay but has a wandering soul. Can these two work around their wanderlust to find common ground? If any place can entice them to do so, charming, bird-obsessed Tuft Swallow is it.

This is a steamy romantic comedy full of bird puns, familiar characters from the Tuft Swallow series, and witty banter.

Hi Readers!
I am a writer, reader, wife, mother, teacher, and photographer. I married my high school sweetheart - a real-life second chance love story! - and have been a hopeful romantic ever since. When I'm not reading swoon-worthy romances or letting my characters take over my stories, you can find me sipping on a fountain soda with a true crime documentary on TV.

At least I wish that was all I had to do. Usually I'm chasing my two daughters around with my camera, grading papers, or cleaning up after the animals on our mini-farm in rural Maryland (at least goats, chickens, dogs, and cats are cute, right?).

I have a BA in English-Secondary Education, a BA in Psychology, and a Masters of Arts in Liberal Arts where I focused on writing, photography, and juggling. Yes-juggling. I still practice in my kitchen much to the horror of my husband and delight of my kiddos.

More 4 1/2 🌟 I adored returning to Tuft Swallow for the next instalment in the series with Don’t Give A Cluck. Tuft Swallow is a small town full of community spirit and has some memorable folk and in this story we met Nix and Thayer as well as some returning characters from the previous books. I loved the return of the Nosey Pecker a Bridgeraton inspired gossip paper. I adored Nix and Thayer and as a couple they were perfect for each other. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and returning to Tuft Swallow. I received a complementary copy from the author.

I really enjoyed this story! First, it had several of my favorite tropes combined and second wit was a well executed and written, so all wins!

Nix is a sollitary nomad girl, that goes where her head and heart take her. She has no strings after  a bad childhood.
After almost running over Mayor Winston, she decides to camp for a while in Tuft Swallow, and she diacovers an amazing thing! That she liked to belong somewhere, to participate and organize things for her community, to being known and addressed on the street and even to be on The Nozy Pecker! She secretly wants all that.
Thayer is an architect, that after an health problem returned to his small town and stayed to take over the family bookstore. Well, after 3 years things are the same and he didn't made any improvements. At least not until he meets Nix.
After meeting her and all the banter from butting heads at first (even if their atraction was obvious) they start being friends and enjoying each other company, and from then on love blossoms.
But can love grow and survive when they have such different goals?
I admired Nix's strength. After all she had been dealt, she pushed through, and didn't lowered her head. It was good to see her gain purpose, friends and love from people who cared!
Thayer is a grumpy guy at first, but once you get into his circle he does everything. He had some insecurities, and those were the main reason holding him back.

I've been enjoying all the books from this perky town, but I think this one is my favorite so far!

Another fantastic addition to the Swift Hallow series that has left me absolutely begging for more! i have to say, i think this one was my favorite so far. i TORE through this one, devoured it even. the characters where so engaging and delightful i couldn't put the book down!

Follow Nix, a girl on the run. well, not really, unless you count running away from her shitty memories. She travels from campsite to campsite, saving her money and intending on never going back home until she has a life that she can shove in her negligent mother bitchy face... she never expected to find a place where she wanted to stay. she never expected Tuft Swallow to be so... perfect. and frankly, the locals resident book seller might be a good bonus too.

Thayer is a man on the run. well, not really, unless you count hiding from the shame and embarrassment of 'the incident' that got him more or less tossed out of college. he's been running his grandparents bookstore and aviary for three years now, spinning his wheels and using it to pretend he doesn't have deep seated emotional constipation. he's a rigid rule follower... so what the hell is he supposed to do with this overly energetic pixie that just barreled into his life and moved the bookstore around without even asking first?!

it's witty, it's charming, their banter is adorable, and their passions run very hot. can they find a future together, or will their dreams take them in opposite directions?

Don't Give A Cluck is part of the multiauthor series Tuft Swallow.

I really enjoyed the initial banter between Nix and Thayer. We get to see how they both disagree with things. These two had major chemistry, but due to some misspoken words they butt heads some of the time at the start.

Thayer was pretty stubborn and a bit pretentious. Nix comes to his book store and helps him revamp it so it can become more successful, but at times he really does fight her on it. He thinks everyone wants to read a lot of heavy literature when there are some who just want to read a lighter story. He fights the new set up, but he finally does relent when he sees the results of this endeavour. I was proud of his character development.

Nix has been travelling across the country for the past ten years and hasn't set down roots. She finally finds a small town that she falls in love with. I honestly didn't know if we were going to get a character that enjoyed cornhole, but we finally did with Nix. She really falls in love with all aspects of the town and when she is given the chance to set down roots, she really wonders if she should. I loved her development from a character that wandered around to someone who was able to realize what they wanted and settle down.

This was another great installment of the Tuft Swallow series.

Don't Give A Cluck by Karigan Hale is part of the shared Tuft Swallow world series written by seven different authors. All the stories are set in a cosy, small town full of charming people, all keen on bird jokes and minding each others' businesses...

Don't Give A Cluck is the fourth story in the series, and we get to meet Nix who's been a nomad for the last decade. She's come to Tuft Swallows to be a camp site host. She has an attitude to match her free spirit, and she never plans to stay any longer period of time in any place.

Thayer is a former award winning architect who's returned home to Tuft Swallow to run his parents' book store. To the horror of the whole town, he's also decided to run a cat rescue - not popular in a town mad about their birds.

Nix and Thayer are both somewhat lost, but they seem to be able to bring out the best in each other - the question is if they'll allow that to happen or if the wanderlust will win? Add in the meddling town folk, a fire, some cute cats and the odds are soon stacking up...

Don't Give A Cluck is another fantastic story in the Tuft Swallow shared world; expect more bird puns, the naughty goat and the return of some of the characters from the previous books.

Little Pixie & Sexy Bookstore Owner

I found myself fully immersed into the world of Tuft Swallow and scanning the pages for the next bird pun in Karigan Hale’s Don’t Give a Cluck. This is part of the Tuft Swallow series and can be read as a standalone or each book can be read in any order.

Nix came to Tuft Swallow to stay at the local camp for a few weeks then leave as she never sticks around anywhere for long. She meets Nix at the local bookstore and they totally rub each other the wrong way while simultaneously have chemistry. Neither of them are planning to stay in Tuft Swallow or start a relationship but the town and the Tit Peepers have different plans.

The FMC is so lovable, strong and kind. I adore her. The author does a great job with her back story. The MMC is a bit of a grump but i really like his character and his loyalty to family. I love the back and forth banter between the two main characters. The side characters are great and an added bonus.
The bird puns are so cute and funny, just love them!

I recommend this book for a rom com with some spice, chosen family, with a HEA.

Nix arrives in Tuft Swallow for a Camp Host stint, only to be met by Winston. As she settles in, she falls in love with the people and the town... As well the super cute owner the local second hand bookstore, The Plot Chickens, Thayer.

As Nix gets herself a job at the book store, she finds herself drawn to Thayer, but she's never put roots down anywhere in the last 10 years, and now she's wondering if it's something she can do. Especially with Thayer planning to return to MIT to continue his studies.

I loved watching Thayer and Nix's relationship develop. I loved their puns, their banter, and their chemistry. I loved Nix's Book Club. And how well she got along with Thayer's sister, Piper.

A fabulously fun story of finding out that one can find a place where you belong, regardless of childhood trauma.

I loved this introduction to Karigan Hale, and I'm looking forward to reading more of her work...

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is another book in the Tuft Swallow series. The whole series is set in a kooky town that is obsessed with birds and corn hole and despises cats. This is the story of Nix and Thayer. Nix had a rough childhood and has never felt loved. She blew into town intending to only stay for the summer. Thayer is from Tuft Swallow and is preparing to fly the coop. (Be prepared for all of the bird puns in this series!)

Thayer and Nix are opposites. He is buttoned up and starts out as a grump. She is a combat boot wearing, charismatic pixie. Yet together, they are perfect even though Nix doesn't want a relationship and Thayer is preparing to leave. It seems that their relationship is doomed from the start, but is it?

All of the characters in this series are fun to get to know and overlap between the books. The authors did a great job maintaining continuity in the series and fleshing out the characters....and each of the authors is good at bird puns.

Just like the other books, this is a well written, fun story with some spice.

Nix travels the country, pulling her camper. She bounces from camp site to camp site until she lands in Tuft Swallow. Thayer has been back in town for 3 years, stagnant and grumpy. Every since "the incident," he hasn't really made any major decisions. Nix and Thayer don't have a meet-cute, they clash out right. But he may be leaving town soon, and she might actually have found a place to put down roots. How will this ever work?

When I say slow burn, I meant you will be past page 200 of 300 (really 295) before things ignite. Then you'll be wondering how anything could possibly work out when there are no answers by page 288. Chapter 19 was awesome. Chapter 35, not so much

Another trip to Tuft Swallow and no regrets! How I wish this place was real. I would move there in a heartbeat.

In this installment, we meet Nix…a wanderlust traveler who is coming to spend a month in Tuft Swallow. She meets Thayer, the local bookstore owner. Both are running from their past and find healing in each other; though it isn’t automatically love and first sight! Gosh love Nix and her sassy little mouth! And the burn is slow, yet delightful in this book. It was worth the wait!

What I truly loved about this book was the small town, found family. This is a place where they are going to come around you and annoy the 💩 out of you, but be there when the tough gets going. It reminds me of the town my Grandpa’s family was from (LaJunta, CO).

If you are debating this series, don’t sleep on it. From the Nosy Pecker to the bird puns to the spicy love stories….its worth your time!

Back in Tuft Swallows, a small eccentric town with just as eccentric residents, this story follows Nix who is a lone drifter never settling in one spot too long. Nix likes her independence and when she stops in Tuft Swallows the last thing she expects is sparks to fly with the local bookstore owner, Thayer. Thayer is an architect that has been working at his grandparents bookstore since something went down and he wants to get back out there to follow his dreams but at the same time he is uncertain if he even should, but when the incredible Nix walks into his bookstore and life, things for him are about to change. This town, the characters, and the stories are such a breath of fresh air with emotions, fun banter, and a crazy goat mayor that you end up loving. I love Thayer and Nix together watching the chemistry grow and seeing where their journeys would take us.

This is the third book in the Tuft Swallow series. I love how they are all written by different authors. It is only the second time I have read a series like this. And again the book is full of fun characters including Winston, the town’s Mayor who just happens to be a goat.

Thayer is a sexy bookseller, ok he is a sexy architect who is hiding out in Tuft Swallow after an ‘incident’. Nix is a free spirited travellers who doesn’t put down roots. So of course the Tit Peepers are going to play matchmakers.

Loved this book. Nix and Thayer are my favourite Tuft Swallow couple. Can’t wait to see what else is in store for this small town.

Nix takes her camper around the country and relocates every few weeks but she’s never been anyplace like Tuft Swallow. Her first day there she has to rescue a cat from a bunch of bird lovers, she takes the cat to the local cat rescue and the book store/bird rescue/cat rescue owner becomes her nemesis despite their mutual care for cats. The nemesis status turns to attraction and they’re the next head line in the Nosey Pecker.

I have loved every book in the Tuft Swallow series so far and this one is just as awesome. Funny bird puns, cute banter, great spice. So many great moments, I especially loved the classics turned smut book club, everyone needs one of those.

There is just something about Tuft shallows that draws me back, I love this little town and to have romance on top of it with fun banter, suspense, mystery, found family, community, and two characters who are the perfect duo, perfection. My heart was invested. There is something about small town romances that warms my heart. Another great book about an FMC and MMC that notice each other in tuft shallows. Don’t be a chicken and dive into this beautiful addition to the series. 4.7/5 would recommend!

Another great book in the Tuft Swallow series. Nix avoids relationships with anyone, including having good friends. When she lands in Tuft Swallow for a month as a camp host, things start to change for her. She feels like she's found people she can relate to and a place she can settle down. Thayer had been running a bookstore, a bird aviary, and a cat rescue. He's avoiding facing his past. When they cross paths, they both have a physical connection, but can it turn into more when she always leaves?

This was a cute story about two people who find each other. The only thing is, not everything is perfect and well, they learn to be each other’s support.

I enjoyed getting to know the characters and their strong chemistry. They had banter for days and some parts were pretty enjoyable and funny.

I haven’t read other books but I’m 100% sure they are as great as this one.

Small town romance always feel safe and cozy, at least to me. I will be reading more from this author.

Nix arrives in Tuft Swallow to work at the camp ground. When she finds a cat in trouble she seeks out the cat rescue run by Thayer. She also discovers his dishevelled book store. Thayer is stuck in a rut trying to restore the book store and also maybe resurrect his architect studies. However, Nix gets under his skin as she starts reorganising things in his store and at the camp site. But their chemistry is undeniable. Another hilarious instalment in this series.

This is the 4th book in the multi author series set in Tuft Swallow. The chemistry between Nix and Thayer is entertaining and fits in well with the rest of the quirky characters that make up this small town. The bird puns continue, and Ms. Hale even throws in a few cat puns to go with Nix and Thayer's love of cats in a town that is all about the birds. This is my first time reading a book by this author. Ms. Hale does an excellent job with this rom-com and I will be looking to read more of her books.

Another story set in the fictional small town of Tuft Swallow, and each one gives you a bigger sense of community and literally makes you wish living there among their inhabitants. What a beautiful group of people!
Nix and Thayer had a great chemistry and I really enjoyed their development as a couple, with some setbacks threatening their future, that made it even more interesting.

I am absolutely loving this series. It’s super funny, and sweet.. All these characters, are just amazing. Each special in their own way. And this book.. was another great story in this world. Im even more excited for the rest of this series and more antics from the nosy older people, and Winston the mischievous town mayor.

Thayer & Nix
Owl be dammed! Thayer doesn't give the greatest first or even second impression especially to Nix. Once you see past the pretentiousness he is a really nice guy. Overall a spicy small-town read set in a bookshop.

Very cute. Grumpy sunshine, cat liver in a bird town. I enjoyed the story and how the town showed up. Winston is by far the best in these books, sowing chaos.
