About the author

The name Poe brings to mind images of murderers and madmen, premature burials, and mysterious women who return from the dead. His works have been in print since 1827 and include such literary classics as The Tell-Tale Heart, The Raven, and The Fall of the House of Usher. This versatile writer’s oeuvre includes short stories, poetry, a novel, a textbook, a book of scientific theory, and hundreds of essays and book reviews. He is widely acknowledged as the inventor of the modern detective story and an innovator in the science fiction genre, but he made his living as America’s first great literary critic and theoretician. Poe’s reputation today rests primarily on his tales of terror as well as on his haunting lyric poetry.

Just as the bizarre characters in Poe’s stories have captured the public imagination so too has Poe himself. He is seen as a morbid, mysterious figure lurking in the shadows of moonlit cemeteries or crumbling castles. This is the Poe of legend. But much of what we know about Poe is wrong, the product of a biography written by one of his enemies in an attempt to defame the author’s name.

The real Poe was born to traveling actors in Boston on January 19, 1809. Edgar was the second of three children. His other brother William Henry Leonard Poe would also become a poet before his early death, and Poe’s sister Rosalie Poe would grow up to teach penmanship at a Richmond girls’ school. Within three years of Poe’s birth both of his parents had died, and he was taken in by the wealthy tobacco merchant John Allan and his wife Frances Valentine Allan in Richmond, Virginia while Poe’s siblings went to live with other families. Mr. Allan would rear Poe to be a businessman and a Virginia gentleman, but Poe had dreams of being a writer in emulation of his childhood hero the British poet Lord Byron. Early poetic verses found written in a young Poe’s handwriting on the backs of Allan’s ledger sheets reveal how little interest Poe had in the tobacco business.

Nyt sain tästä paljon enemmän irti kuin lukiessani tän parikymppisenä. Silloin keskityin liiaksi tarinaan kun Poen jutuissa viehtätys on oikeastaan enemmän rikkaassa ja maalailevassa kielenkäytössä kuin tarinoiden yllätyksellisyydessä. Erityisesti runo Korppi ja novellin "Kuilu ja heiluri" opiumutuiset toden rajoja hakevat jaksot olivat hienoja!

Muistan, kuinka teininä fanitin Edgar Allan Poeta. Hän oli portti kauhukirjallisuuteen ja goottiaikaan. Tarinat olivat jännittäviä, yllättäviä ja koskaan ei tiennyt, minne päädyttiin.

Pienellä jännityksellä otinkin tämän kirjahyllystäni uudelleen lukuun. Oliko aika ollut myötämielinen rakkaalle kirjailijalle? Kyllä ja ei.

Huomasin, että osa tarinoista laajoine kuvauksineen, jotka toisaalta ovat rikkaus, oli tullut myös joissain kohdin rasite. Toisaalta osa tarinoista piti upeasti kutinsa ja kuuluvat edelleen suosikkeihini. Mutta valitettavasti osa oli menttänyt taikansa.

Syy oli ehkä myös siinä, että tarinat olivat tuttuja. Aiemmin yllätys tarinan lopussa tai juonen täydellinen pyöräytys, teki niistä upean kokemuksen. Mutta nyt, ratkaisusta jo tietävänä, ne olivat kärsineet ajan hampaissa.

Oli upeaa huomata, että Kuilu ja heiluri, Tohtori Tarrin ja professori Fetherin menetelmä, Amantillodo-tynnyri sekä (suurin suosikkini) Punaisen kuoleman naamio ovat edelleen kestäneet aikaa. Ainakin omalla kohdalla.

Hauskana sivukommenttina on pakko sanoa, että kiitos sen, että aikoinani luin Poen tuotantoa, on tuottanut hedelmää varsinkin toisen suosikkini TV-sarja Simpsonien myötä. Kyseisessä sarjassa, varsinkin Treehouse of Horror-jaksoissa, usein tyylitellään Poen tarinoiden juonien hengessä ja koska kyseiset juonet ovat vanhastaan tuttuja, on niistä saanut todella paljon iloa 😅

Lähinnä kirjallisuushistoriallisesti kiinnostava. Paljon elementtejä, johtolankoja, aavistuksia joita myöhemmät kirjailijat ovat hyödyntäneet. Ainoat sellaisenaan toimivat kertomukset olivat Tohtori Tarrin ja professori Fetherin menetelmä sekä Punaisen kuoleman naamio (vrt. Keltainen kuningas). Ne olivatkin ajankohtaisia, teemoinaan hulluus ja rutto.

Tykkäsin, jotkut novellit parempia ku toiset. Joissai ei ollu kyllä mitää järkee. Also saa mut tuntemaan itteni paremmaks ihmiseks/gootiks ku te muut sivistymättömät poserit (tämä oli sitten vitsi en oleta että kukaan lukee näitä mun shitposteja)

Kiinnostava. Sopivan lyhyitä tarinoita ja eri aiheilla. Osa tietysti enempi omaan makuun, mutta kaikki luettavia. Tykkäsin.

I listened this as a Finnish audiobook. It may or may not have influenced the experience. The reader, in any case, was such that it suited the material perfectly: he read in a suitable fashion, and his voice was deep and characteristically very much like the voice I pictured this collection to be read with.

I have surprisingly little to say about these stories. They were my first Poes, and I have to say that I was a bit disappointed by them as they didn't make me even nervous, let alone scared. However, I admit it that it is probably due to the oldness of the material: modern readers have basically seen and heard it all already, and especially since we have all the horror movies available, it takes a lot to make a modern reader scared. I suspect that it had something to do with the lack of suspense. Though, I have to confess that a couple of these stories made me feel a bit uneasy nonetheless, even though I already guessed what was going to happen. So I guess the readers of the 1800s could have been quite terrified by Poe's images!

The language was utterly beautiful in every single piece of this collection. It was a great example of the 1800s language of prose, in fact, probably an example of the best that the period's prose language has to offer. Even though I have grown tired of the period's descriptive language recently, Poe's version didn't bother me at all for some reason.

I'm inclined to give this four stars, but since there was basically nothing new to the stories (or maybe I'm just a good guesser), I have to give the collection only three and a half stars.

The Pit and the Pendulum was my favourite.

En voi edes kuvitella omaa varhaisnuoruuteni lukuhistoriaa ilman Poen klassisia kauhukertomuksia! Tutustukaa myös The Alan Parsons Projectin esikoisalbumiin Tales of Mystery and Imagination (1976), jossa tulkitaan musiikillisesti mm. Amontillado-tynnyriä, Kielivää sydäntä ja Usherin talon häviötä.

Tällainen klassikko jäänyt lukematta. Mutta nyt luettu. Osaan pääsin hyvin mukaan, osaan en. Mutta mikään ei jättänyt kylmäksi. Tunnelma loistava.
