Get ready for a fresh take on the zombie genre when the SEALs fix their crosshairs on the undead and the unsavory. James Enroy, a former Navy SEAL, thinks he is the sole survivor left in L.A. after a bioweapon cripples humanity, turning the infected into pudding-faced zombies. A chance meeting with an old mentor and a young heroine brings the trio into a confrontation with a criminal kingpin who has turned the L.A. Zoo into a gladiator arena, pitting zombies against humans. This short story is the first in a series of post-apocalyptic books. Visit jtsawyer.com for more information.
About the Author: JT Sawyer is the pen name for the author who makes his living teaching survival courses for the military special operations community, Department of Homeland Security, US Marshals, FAA, and other federal agencies throughout the US. He has over 25 years of experience testing long-term survival skills in the desert, mountains, and forest.
No real complaints here, but nothing really grabbed me either. I am a zombie junkie and did not get excited about this book at all. For only $0.99 it was a nice way to spend a couple of days reading. I got interested in the book based on the SEAL aspect of it. But again, not much came from that. Not sure if the author has any military experiences, but I suspect not based on how he wrote this story. For an action packed military/zombie series dealing with special forces Tier One operators read any of the Arisen series books, like [[ASIN:B008TQ0T8A Arisen, Book One - Fortress Britain]].
I decided to try this out as a quick read. Zombies are all the rage and I have been ignoring them. I am a bit of a sucker for SEALS though. Escaped nasty drug dealers are not my favourite people.
When they all meet up on a trip to the zoo it turns into the worst school trip ever [if you are the teacher].
I am surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. Go on - surprise yourself - have a read.
I read Zombie books about every third book. This had some decent set up, but way too coincidental things kept happening. And really at no time did you think any of the major characters were in trouble. Read “As the World Dies” by Rhianon Frater instead.
The book was a lot like all the other zombie books. The language wasn't as bad as it could have been... though it was bad enough. I will say it ended with me wanting more... good read.
This is a great introduction to this talented story teller! A good read, strong characters & exciting plot! I did really enjoy this & will look for more by this writer! Great fun!
This book was so fun to read. I really enjoyed the characters. There is plenty of action and danger with just enough humour to make it fun. I'm off to read next one.
James is a former Seal and is now a private security guard to a rich man, looking after all his security needs. They live in the penthouse of a locked and secure building filled with supplies and weapons. It is the perfect place to be when the zombie apocalypse begins, especially with his employer dead and his daughter missing. Then he realises that women are being held captive by armed men at the zoo and he decides to go and see if there is any way to free them.
This was a decent zombie book. James is a character you can relate to as he wants to do the right thing and not leave the women as prisoners if there is any way of saving them. I admit that in his place I would have been happy just to stay safe with my supplies and being a big reader, I'd have lots of books to keep me from getting bored! But of course there would be no story then...So James decides to scout out the zoo, first holing up with another army colleague who then agrees to help him. Not only are there civilian prisoners but there is a gladiator ring where captured men have to battle against the zombies for the entertainment of the criminal gang.
I really liked the action in the arena. It was interesting to see what didderent people do with the offered weapons, how a small mistake can be the difference between being alive and being zombie chow! I liked the way James used his training to take on the zombies and plan a way to kill the gang members and rescue the civilians.
I liked the idea of the plot. I can never get enough of zombies and there was enough action and tension in it to keep me happy. I especially loved the bit where nature gets its revenge! While I did enjoy it as a read, I wouldn't go rushing out to read a sequel unless it was really cheap. It just lacked the oomph that I look for in zombie books to just take it to the next level. There is nothing wrong with it but it didn't grab me in the way that the author's First Wave did. I still plan to look at the Carlie Simmons series at some point.
Just to be clear, I am NOT a zombie genre fan. Indeed, this is my very first zombie book. Sawyer started off with his protagonist isolated from society, staying above the fray of the undead. The hero was bored and lonely, and I was starting to commiserate when all of a sudden the hero descended into the throngs. As his adrenaline spiked so did mine. I plowed through the rest of the book as the hero moved from one hellish situation to another. Powerfully written - it is a quick-read, page-turner, all-nighter, so-be-prepared- to-be-groggy-at-work kind of book. You'll want to buy FIRST WAVE next.
I'm giving this book five stars because I enjoyed it very much! It is through first book that I have read by JT Sawyer but definitely not the last. I need to read more about James, the Chief and Krista. Do they make to where they are heading or do they run into more problems? I definitely recommend this book to everyone.
I just finished reading hell Week and First Wave back to back and I must say I am impressed! The author's own personal experiences with military tactics make for an amazing read! Can't wait for the next books in the series!
This was a non stop adventure from start to finish. The characters are fantastically easy to love or love to hate, with excellent personality... it will leave you panting for the next installment without a doubt. I would highly recommend that you read it for yourself!
I really like JT's writing. It's strong characters and even though it's a zombie book, it isn't all blood and gore. And any love scenes in his books are described with respect. Old fashioned but that's good.
