Star Commandos #6

Return to War

Rate this book
Connor, Karmikel, and their former unit had served on the planet Anath for several months during the War. Now, they and their current comrades are back in response to a call for aid to combat another invasion. This time, the enemies are Britynons, old foes of Connor and Karmikel’s homeworld. They are out to take Anath to settle on her and to rape her resources, and they are prepared to annihilate the governmental and major population center of the premech native people in order to break any hope of resistance from that quarter. Can a near-suicidal raid by the Commandos prevent that assault, which will otherwise come before the help they have summoned from the Federation Navy can arrive?

Re-reading this in preparation for the books being re-released this year.

The story is your basic Star Commandos novel: an outsized threat that can't be handled by the local population, so the guerilla team gets sent in to neutralize the threat. Bandit is now taking a more active role, and Bethe and Jake are firmly united as a couple. Islaen and Varn are still uber-capable, and everyone has a specialized skillset that they bring to bear during the course of the mission.

This is not my favorite of the Star Commandos novels. I took issue with the way the team handled the threat, the nature of the threat, and the entire sub-plot with the arrogant king. Several times in the book I also just got tired of Varn's self-recrimination. Overall, though, it's a good series, and others may disagree with me.

This was just thrilling in the same way as Jack Higgin's WWII action thrillers. For anyone who just wants an adrenaline-rush-inducing mission on par with "Where Eagles Dare" or "The Great Escape" or anything from "Hogan's Heroes", you want to read this.

This whole series is a fun sci-fi romp from an author who is local to me. Worth the read!
