Every small town has secrets, some of them can be very dark. The northern Georgia town of Toccoa has such a secret. When Roy and his father find an old grave on property that has been handed down since the Civil War, they begin to question who is actually buried in that grave and why it remained hidden for over 100 years. Their lives are in danger as they search deeper into the mystery. But more important than their lives, local history is at stake as well as honor.
Sometimes you are a witness to history, sometimes you remember it,then there are times you are the history.
We live in small town in Ga. This is as authentic a story as we here often. Our friends who live in Toccoa, have repeated tails of locals more convoluted then this.
While searching for my family history, I found this book. I could not put it down! For several days I lived in Toccoa. Dr. Deal is a great writer. He has a way of making the reader feel comfortable and part of the story.
I really found this book interesting. I've lived in Gumlog, featured in the story as a location and really got into picturing places in this book that are still around. While the fiction of this story is woven masterfully into the reality, the writing transports the reader back in time into this gritty town in NE Georgia. I could feel the heat of the day, the sweat slipping down the skin of the protagonist, and especially enjoyed the character descriptions that made some of the more villainous characters seem particularly vile. If you are interested in actual history, I don't think this story holds much water, but it is a very entertaining ride. If you've lived in this area you should definitely check it out because you will be able to picture the area that it takes place in very well. I enjoyed this book.
