Georgina Drake – professional photographer, amateur sleuth – investigates a decades-old mystery at a picturesque lighthouse…
Georgina Drake’s latest photography assignment takes a dark turn when she discovers the body of unpopular property developer, Eliot Manson, at the scenic Summerstrand Lighthouse. The police suspect a carbon monoxide leak, but to Georgina’s professional eye, something about the scene looks too staged to be an accident.
As if one body wasn’t enough, Georgina has barely managed to share her concerns with charming DI Colin Bradshaw when her spaniel, Bert, digs up human remains buried near the lighthouse. Could these decades-old bones be connected to Manson’s death?
Manson had no shortage of enemies, from his embittered ex-wife to the local residents opposed to his development plans. But one suspect is about to be ruled out in deadly fashion, and if Georgina doesn’t watch her back, she might well be next…
An unputdownable cosy mystery full of twists, turns, and unforgettable characters. Perfect for fans of Agatha Christie, Faith Martin and Midsomer Murders.

When Georgina Drake was sent to photograph a scenic, soon to be redeveloped lighthouse, she was with DI Colin Bradshaw and her dog Bert. Having to meet with the current owner, Georgie was bemused when no one answered her knocking at the door. And Bert was determined to do some digging close to the lighthouse. When he uncovered human bones, and Colin had sent for a set of keys for the lighthouse door, it soon became clear that they had two deaths - one obviously suspicious, and one (the owner/developer in the lighthouse) perhaps not suspicious. But Georgie wasn't convinced and Colin felt the same. Forensics and his team soon arrived on scene, and the job of interviewing members of the public began. Georgie set herself the job of discovering who the bones belonged to, but could she after the time which had lapsed?
With the help of Doris, Georgie dug deeply. Her daughter Bea provided her mother with links to past missing persons so they had something to work with. Meanwhile, Colin was frustrated, continually hitting a brick wall regarding the body in the lighthouse. Then another body was discovered, the clock was ticking; time was of the essence...
The Body in the Lighthouse is the 4th in A Georgina Drake Mystery series by Kate Hardy and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Georgie and Colin are becoming close, Bert the spaniel is digging up more bones, and Doris is wonderful. I've loved every one in this series, and am looking forward to #5. Highly recommended.
With thanks to NetGalley & Bookouture for my digital ARC to read and review.
Another fabulous story in this awesome series, this one takes us to a lighthouse in Summerstrand when Georgina has an assignment to take photos and interview the owner, Eliot Manson who is renovating it, much to the dislike of many of the locals, but when she arrives with her trusty dog Bert and her partner DI Colin Bradshaw what they find is the owner dead and then Bert digs up a bone, which means two cases to investigate.
The investigation starts in earnest with Doris helping with the body found buried, and Georgina is enthused to help uncover what happened to them and who they are, but the scene in the lighthouse looks very suspicious to Colin and Georgina and with the fact that the victim is not well liked by anyone only his fiancé there may be a lot of suspects to interview with the forensic team on the case there are some answers coming in and it classed as a murder.
When the victims fiancé is found dead as well more questions are piling up and the pressure is on Colin to find the answers, of course Georgina is there to help she is very good at getting answers to her questions and with Doris helping with the buried body they soon discover who this person is and are uncovering the reason for his death, but will they discover who killed Eliot Manson.
This is a page turner of a book one that I read in one sitting, I could not put it down, so well written it kept my mind turning trying to work out who done it, Kate Hardy brings the characters and the setting to life in her stories and of course Georgina, Colin, Doris and Bert are a formidable team they work through things and get the answers, I do highly recommend this one and the series and look forward to many more mysteries to uncover in this beautiful setting.
My thanks to Storm Publishing and Netgalley for my copy to read and review.

The Body in the Lighthouse is the fourth book in the Georgina Drake cozy mystery series written by Kate Hardy. I like Georgie, a 53 year old photographer, widow, mother of two adult children, owner of the body finding spaniel Bert, friend to a lovely ghost named Doris who has been dead for 53 years, and in a budding relationship with Detective Colin Bradshaw. In The Body in the Lighthouse Georgina has been commissioned to photograph a historic lighthouse and the man planning to completely renovate it,Eliot Manson, a decision that is unpopular with the locals. When they arrive at the lighthouse Mr. Manson is not there although his car appears to be. While waiting the ever curious Bert starts digging, and as is becoming the norm in the series, he discovers a human bone. After a time Georgina calls Manson's office and his PA agrees to bring the keys to the lighthouse so the photographing may begin. Lo and behold Eliot Manson is found dead- is it murder or an accident? The series and this book are easy to read with likeable characters, well developed plots and very satisfying endings. I do hope that if there are to be future books in the series that the relationship between Georgie and Colin picks up a bit more energy and that the storylines are more varied. Saying that though I have found the books to be pleasurable and very satisfactory reads. Thank you to NetGalley, Storm Publishing and the author for the opportunity to read an ARC of The Body in the Lighthouse; this review reflects my honest opinion. 3.5 rounded to 4 stars.
A enjoyable short and cozy mystery book with constant twist and turns, and new information that keeps the reader guessing. I couldn't put it down and was constantly second guessing who I thought had done it all. I was a bit sad that one of the mysteries was left open ended in a kind of "well here's our theory and it could have happened" but it was never officially solved. I was also a little put off by the MC talking to a ghost and that's how she got some of her information for figuring out what happened.
This is book four in this series. I haven’t read the previous ones and I don’t think you really have to. However I think I would just so you get some sense of the main characters and how they came to be together. There’s two mysteries to solve in the book. I thought each one was good and kept me guessing. I did think it started a bit slow but it picked up and moved fairly quickly then. I will definitely be looking forward to the next ones in this series.
Another good entry in the Georgina Drake mystery series. This time Georgina's dog Bert digs up another skeleton, at nearly the same time and location where Colin, Georgina's partner, finds a new corpse. Once again, we have a cold case murder and a contemporary murder to be solved.
I like the progress of Georgina's and Colin's relationship over the course of the books, and the respect the two have for each other. I also found both the contemporary murder and the historical murder interesting.
I love this series! It's fun, the slowly developing romance between Georgie and Colin is sweet and gentle, and the mysteries are intriguing. In this one, Georgie is set to meet a developer to do a photo shoot for an architectural magazine, but the man's not there when Georgie and Colin arrive at the lighthouse to meet him. However, Bert, with Doris' help, uncovers another skeleton .... and Georgie and Colin find the developer dead inside the locked lighthouse. A real conundrum for Colin and his team. Georgie and Doris try to unravel the mystery of the skeleton which has some surpring revelations. The characters are awesome and the story is so well written. A great read. Thanks to Netgalley, Storm Publishing, and Kate Hardy for a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Georgina Drake book four. Cosy mystery. Norfolk little Wenborough and Georgina has been celebrating her birthday with policeman Colin, their relationship is going really well. Georgina along with Colin are heading to summerstrand lighthouse to meet Eliot Manson the lighthouse has been empty for some time and he is making it into a holiday home, so she has set up a interview and some photos his car is outside but the man is nowhere to be found. Colin unearthed a skeleton then they find Mr Manson body inside the cottage attached to the lighthouse. Never a dull moment in this book lots of twists, turns, with added banter. I always look forward to reading from this author. Loved it.
‘Secrets are always better out in the open, where they can’t fester,’ Colin said. ‘Mmm,’ Georgina said, thinking of the secret she was keeping from him. It wasn’t something that could fester, exactly; but it could definitely drive a wedge between herself and Colin. Somehow, she’d have to find a way to tell him the truth about Doris…
I knew I’d love this and I was absolutely right. There are so many fantastic elements, a cosy crime set in a beautiful coastal backdrop is a good starter. A historic crime always has an extra element of intrigue and the long lasting effects on the people left behind up until present day. The very human story of being homosexual in less enlightened times and the historical differences and deep sadness playing out. I also likes the Enid Blighton esque smuggler and lighthouse aspect although I can’t go into too much detail as I’ll inadvertently give spoilers. I’d read a previous book in the series and the added facet of Doris the ghost wasn’t something I thought I’d warm to then but I most certainly did then and definitely did now. She’s charming and a brilliant addition to the storyline. Overall love love love this and truly hoping for more. A great read.
I love a good cosy mystery and while this wasn’t a ‘bad’ cosy mystery it really didn’t stand out for me. What I would say though, is that even though this is part of a series I had no issue slipping right into this world and the dynamics so it’s definitely not necessary for anyone to have read the previous two books in the series to enjoy this one.
This is a slow paced mystery with a fairly predictable ending (the breadcrumbing felt more like slices of bread littered throughout), but it was a nice enough way to while away an evening.
Now comes my gripes (and there’s 2 main ones).
Colin - now maybe he would have been more likable if I had read the previous books but he really didn’t hold up as a love interest in this book. His attitude was a bit dated and while he did seem capable of some reflection, he didn’t seem interested in implementing any changes. He was boring and seemed determined to live up to so many male toxicity stereotypes. I also didn’t see any chemistry between him and Georgie - I couldn’t for the life for me understand her interest in him. Also how many times is he going to be compared to Mr Darcy?! This felt like such a weird and forced comment to be continually thrown around and I can’t help but feel as though this was meant to endear the reader towards liking Colin more, although it definitely didn’t do that for me. I found his relationship with Georgie really frustrating and I think honestly this is what dragged down my rating so much.
What I wanted to know more about was Doris and her relationship with Georgie. This was the only unique element to this book and yet it was barely mentioned - it was given barely any page time at all. While I’m not a big fan of ghosts in mysteries, if you’re going to add one at least make it interesting? Or impactful? Doris had absolutely no influence on the story in any way at all - so why was she there?
Overall I can’t see myself reading any more of this series. Not because it was a terrible book (because it really wasn’t) but because the balance here was just all wrong and I’m doubtful it would be better in the next installment.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an E-ARC
Kate Hardy delivers a brisk, engaging mystery with The Body in the Lighthouse, blending past and present crimes into a dual timeline that keeps the pages turning. The intertwined mysteries create a dynamic rhythm—just as you start to settle into one storyline, a twist in the other pulls you forward again. It’s a clever and effective structure that sustains momentum throughout.
What truly sets this apart from standard British village cozies are the characters. They feel real—flawed, layered, and refreshingly free of cliché. Hardy avoids leaning on quaint stereotypes and instead builds a community that’s believable, with relationships that add depth to the puzzle-solving.
Overall, this is a smartly plotted mystery with heart, ideal for readers who want cozies that aren’t too staid.
The Body in the Lighthouse is a fantastic read. This is book 4 in the series as it can be read as a stand alone it would be better if you read the books in order. I really enjoyed the character's and the storyline. I did read the other books as well and I think each one is better than the last but they are all great! I would highly recommend this series if you enjoy a good non gory murder mystery.
This was a solid cozy mystery. It checked all the boxes and was easy to follow even though I haven't read the first three books in the series. I wouldn't say it was a particularly exciting or memorable story, but it's a decent read if you're in the mood for a simple, cozy mystery.
I read an ARC of this book from NetGalley. All comments are my own.
A good light read. Excellent storyline. Bit of a shame Doris didn't have much of a part in this one. I think in previous books she's been the "life and soul" of the story. I hope she gets a bigger part next time!!
I'm hooked. Once I started reading, I was compelled to finish. I've come to like Georgina, Colin, and the cast of characters that surrounds her. It's a pleasure to see a main character who actually works with the police, not against them, and doesn't hesitate to share any info gathered. Nor does she go dashing off into dangerous situations, something few of our other favorite amateur sleuths can boast of. She's smart, cares about others, and able to sort out things not always obvious to the frequently overworked and stressed Colin. I have to admit to patting myself on the back, of course, for picking up on a missed clue before it became important, so maybe I'm getting better at this sleuthing thing, too. Toss in Georgina's spaniel Bert, who has the not-so-desired trait of digging up bodies, and it's a fun read.
The author does an excellent job of mixing myth and history, fuzzy as some of the events were in most memories. I won't detail the plot as I don't want to give away too much as the twists and turns are part of the fun, not to mention they make our brains work We're reminded of a history within the lifespan of many of us, however, when acceptance of differences was not common and those who wavered from the expected path might face danger. Everyone has secrets but, as the book notes, secrets kept can fester. This time they lead to murder. Who killed developer Eliot Manson and his girlfriend? Why? As it turns out, the list of suspects is a long one. There's also the matter of the human bone Bert digs up? Who was it? Why were they buried at the lighthouse? Does the legend of Black Shuck, a huge mastiff that once seen means you only have a week to live, have something to do with this situation? Priests' holes? What is Georgina learning about Colin during all this, well, aside from reaffirming his fatigue at being compared to Mr. Darcy? Oh, and so many Shakespeare references, too. What's up with that?
Bottom line, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters are likable, people whose situations most can relate to, and the setting is lovely. You'll learn some history, not to mention Shakespeare quotes, and get to hang out with some adorable dogs. And, oh, I can't forget Doris. Doris is a ghost heard only by Georgina via her hearing aid. I feared Doris might be gone after the last book so was delighted to see her pop up again, especially with news of her beloved Harrison. She's able to be part of the investigation, too, an extra plus. Colin remains a tad stuffy but we learn more of his backstory, too, one that impacted his life, so he's making strides forward with Georgina. Thanks #StormPublishing for allowing me this early look at all that is going on in Georgina's world. As an amateur photographer myself, I found myself drawn to her initially and have come to like her a great deal. I'm looking forward to the next book to see if my hunch about what secret she's keeping from Colin is right, not to mention if she'll actually share it with him.
I didn't realise that this was the fourth book in a series, I think that had I read the previous books I would have been more invested in the characters, having said that, the book on the whole was enjoyable with a few exceptions. Photographer, Georgina Drake, was commissioned to take pictures of the deserted Summerstand Lighthouse on the Norfolk coast, the lighthouse had been bought, against the wishes of the community, by property developer, Eliot Manson, a man despised by all but his model fiance, Tara. What was going to be a quick photoshoot turned sinister when the body of the owner was found inside. Georgie's partner, DI Colin Bradshaw was quickly on the case, things got even more sinister when Georgie's dog, Bert, began digging outside where the patio had been and uncovered human bones, could there be a link ? Manson had so many enemies that it was difficult to narrow down a suspect, Colin was stumped, it appeared to be accidental but his gut told him that Manson had been murdered but by who ? This story has many twists and turns, I can't say that I warmed to either of the main characters, again that could be because I hadn't read the previous books which would have given me some background, I found Colin a little bland, Georgie a little pushy and I really didn't get the "connection" with Doris, I didn't see a need for her and nowhere did it say who she was. I have read and really enjoyed many stories with ghosts but I really couldn't see the point in this one. Apart from that I did enjoy the story and will be interested to see where it leads. Thank you to Storm Publishing and Net Gallery for this ARC, the review is totally my opinion.
Georgina Drake is looking forward to her next photographic assignment at the Summerstrand Lighthouse, or at least she was until she learned a little about its new owner, local property developer, Eliot Manson. A bully and serial philanderer, he has more enemies than friends in the small village where he lives. As it is her birthday, Georgina's partner, Detective Colin Bradshaw, has taken a few days off and, alongside dog Bert, accompanies her to the photo shoot. He is instantly back on duty, however, when they discover not one body but two!
With Georgina’s secret friend, the dearly departed Doris, once again speaking to her through her hearing aids, she has her ghostly partner-in-crime-solving back and it isn't long before they have information to impart, not that Georgie can tell Colin where she got it! With an investigation going nowhere fast and friends and acquaintances on the suspect list, everyone is on edge. Will the long hidden secrets that are about to be revealed make their killer more dangerous, or will the past finally be able to be laid to rest?
Kate Hardy's fourth book in her Georgina Drake Mystery Series is my first, but I was at no disadvantage. There were a couple of spoilers for previous adventures, but I thoroughly enjoyed this and absolutely plan to read all previous and future stories as soon as I can.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Storm Publishing, but the opinions expressed are my own. I loved this and recommend it highly.
I knew that this was book 4 of an existing series from the NG details however, I’m a sucker for pictures of lighthouses so requested it anyway. I’m really glad that I did as this was a thoroughly enjoyable cosy crime mystery that stood up well as a stand alone novel. Cosy crime novels stand or fall by their main characters and I thought that Georgina was one of the better amateur detectives that I have read recently. I liked the way that she didn’t push the boundaries of what an amateur investigator could do and all of her actions felt completely plausible. I liked her relationship with the DI too. He is obviously in love with her which is lovely even though he can be a bit stuffy and pompous at times but that made him a bit more real. It was an engaging mystery with a victim whose death was regretted by hardly anyone and another mystery skeleton to add an extra layer to the investigation. I wasn’t sure about the inclusion of the ghost at first but then grew used to her popping at odd times. I really enjoyed this and found it hard to put down as I so wanted to find out who dunnit. I’m now going to look out the rest of this series as I would like to fill in some of the gaps in my knowledge of Georgina and the others in the book. Thank you to Net Galley and Storm Publishing for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
My 6P review: Publication, Plot, People, Place, Prose/Pace, Praise
Georgie Drake’s dog digs up a body and she investigates the decade’s old mystery. Another body is discovered at the same location and this victim has no shortage of enemies.
This is the third book in the series and although it is my first read, I felt I didn’t need to read the previous two to understand what was going on.
I didn’t particularly like the characters. Colin was annoying and one of the most unprofessional police officers I’ve come across. He was like a wet tea bag. Georgie was much better but I couldn’t understand her relationship with Doris. What was that all about? Perhaps reading the first two is actually necessary.
There was too much repetition for my liking. Colin was always reminding Georgie about his inability to say too much. There was also a lot of unnecessary detail which added nothing to the story itself. Such as how many sugars Jodie has in her tea and how Georgie likes her cappuccino. This made me skim a lot of the time.
It had a lovely setting and I could clearly picture the lovely town in Norwich but I don’t think I’ll be returning to it but please don’t be put off by my opinion.
Thank you to Netgally for an advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review.
The Body in the Lighthouse is the latest installment in Kate Hardy’s Georgina Drake cozy mystery series, and it’s so good!! I love the thrills and twists and turns that this book took me on, as I got to know more about Georgina’s world, friends, and neighbors.
With this being the fourth book in the series, we’ve all gotten to know a little about Georgina’s talent with photography, talking to a friendly ghost through her hearing aids, and helping her love interest solve local murders.
This time around, things are a little different because we have village events going on, a lighthouse that was purchased by a villager’s ex, and stories about ancient legends, and fabled priest holes. When the lighthouse’s new owner ends up dead in a suspicious way, there is no end to the list of suspects.
Will they find the murderer before they strike again? Does it have anything to do with an old legend? And will Georgina’s friendly ghost come back and talk with her again, after seeming like she crossed over?
Pick up this cozy mystery! You’ll fall in love with Georgina and her world!
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for this lovely ARC!!
3.5* Even though it's book 3 in a series, I had no trouble getting into it.
This isn't a bad cosy mystery but I did find Colin a tad toxic in some of what he thought and said, though he also had insight to think about some of his past actions and behaviours. Unfortunately, he also came across as a bit unprofessional and not in depth enough for a cop - from what I've gleaned from TV, films and other crime novels.
I think his low-key male toxicity/patronising manner was made all the more evident by how Georgina reacted to his apologies. She was as capable and successful as he was, and i think she was experienced enough not to overstep or compromise anything but nope, he still had to say stuff. He was boring, sadly, so it made me eye-roll over how many times he was compared to Mr Darcy - did the author mean Colin Firth, maybe, as the character has been played by several actors, but possibly with Colin Firth being the most noticeable?
It was readable and I'd certainly like to find out more about Georgina and Doris's partnership.
ARC courtesy of NetGalley and Storm Publishing for my reading pleasure.
Kate Hardy has done it again, another cracker of a mystery starring Georgina Drake.
This one has a whole cast of characters, all who seem exceedingly innocent. It's a real brain scratcher for the detectives (amateur and those being paid). I did like the fact that Colin had a much bigger role than usual, given that he was in charge of both cases. There was some great police work done as well as Georgies efforts to find out the truth. Georgina herself had a smaller part, considering her normal role in the books and she was less 'annoyingly present' to the family and friends involved in the case since they were her friends.
I love a good bit of Doris and although the first few books revolved around her stories, she definitely took a back seat in this one. I'm just glad to see that she hasn't gone for good.
This book involved a cold case as well as a present one and dealt with themes such as abusive partners and family, sexual orientation, violence and revenge. The author deals with these issues in her characters well.
My thanks to Netgalley and the author and publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC. All opinions expressed are my own.
The Body in the Lighthouse by K. Hardy, published by Storm Publishing, is the next adventure of Georgina Drake in her mystery series. Georgina, a medium, just thought she put her latest spirit to rest when a body is found who brings a new challenge for Georgin and her friends. Blurb: Georgina Drake’s latest photography assignment takes a dark turn when she discovers the body of unpopular property developer, Eliot Manson, at the scenic Summerstrand Lighthouse. Manson had no shortage of enemies, from his ex-wife to the local residents opposed to his development plans. But one suspect is about to be ruled out in deadly fashion, and if Georgina doesn’t watch her back…
4.5 Stars Georgina Drake’s latest photography assignment takes a dark turn when she discovers the body of unpopular property developer, Eliot Manson, at the scenic Summerstrand Lighthouse. As if one body wasn’t enough, Georgina has barely managed to share her concerns with charming DI Colin Bradshaw when her spaniel, Bert, digs up human remains buried near the lighthouse. The fourth book in the series & it’s easily read on its own. I love how relationships have grown & changed over the series especially Georgie & Colin’s. A very well written intriguing murder mystery. There are plenty of suspects as Manson was disliked by just about everyone apart from his fiancée but then she’s found dead in their house. There’s also the mystery surrounding the body under the patio, Doris is also back & helps Georgie solve this mystery. I was drawn in from the start & read it in two sittings & thoroughly enjoyed it I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own
A thoroughly enjoyable cosy crime mystery with Georgina being a very likeable character and one of the better amateur detectives that has emerged from the genre lately. Doris the ghost stares much less in this book than the other's as her situation was resolved and I wasn't sure if we were going to see her again but she just make the odd appearance to help out. Normally I dont take to paranormal elements but her situation is key to the earlier books and wasn't too intrusive here. There a re two mysteries to be solved here a current murder and a cold case. While both were enjoyable I did feel little let down as the cases really didn't seem to take much solving this time and the murderer of the current was much more likeable than the victim and the cold case murderer was already dead and gone so it just felt a little flat at the end. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
