Rate this book
With more than 1,200 entries, this dictionary-style guide is the most comprehensive source available for everything you'd like to know about the giants--and lesser-known characters --of classical Greek and Roman mythology. Seven appendixes, a complete bibliography, and detailed black-and-white reproductions of related scenes taken from painted ceramics of the period complement this concise, readable reference to the heroic undertakings, noble and moving loving stories, and poignant tales of the ancient world.

this book has very brief descriptions of Greek gods and goddesses, nymphs and satyrs, cyclops and other mythical beings. There is not much here for longer stories or exploits. It's really more like a dictionary of the gods, but as such it is very complete.

If ever you're searching for the name of a classic figure/god/goddess, this volume is an invaluable reference! The dictionary within it contains every significant figure from Achilles through Hermes through Psyche and more. In addition, it contains appendices which include the by-names of Aphrodite/Venus, Apollo, Athena/Minerva, Zeus/Jupiter, etc., and more! There's a lengthy (and informative) introduction, additional appendices and an extensive bibliography as well within it. Students of the classics will benefit from this read! (As a reference, they'll benefit from owning it as well!) I'll never let go of this volume; it has provided me with so much already!
