Together with London Zone, this is the second half of a two-part story. I am revieweing both parts here.
This concluding two-parter brings the plot arc for the season into focus, entirely focused on what has happened to Sophie and why. It's a good thriller plot, with betrayals and narrow escapes and a well-executed fight for survival towards the end. It also includes flashbacks to explain how we got here, and we finally reach the flash-forward framing device that's been used to kick off the individual episodes. Together with the emotional development we're getting for Devis, this would probably be enough for me to give it five stars, taken on its own merits, but there are a couple of weaknesses.
Firstly, and perhaps most obviously, the story takes place entirely on Earth. In fact, there aren't even any science fiction or speculative elements - it's a straightforward crime thriller that could apply to any police force in the modern day. (That everyone has smartphones and broadband internet would obviously have been SF when the TV series aired, but it's hard to argue that that counts today). This misses out on the point of the series, which should be about the challenges of law enforcement in space, or at least the near future. Secondly, not only is the closing sequence redundant (we already know how the story ends by this point), but it leaves a major question about the plot unaddressed. I think maybe we're supposed to think the answer is some vague "insanity", but that seems trite and implausible and could have done with more of an explanation if it's true.
Still, those two points aside, it's a decent story and wraps up this particular arc.
The last episode Devis finally caught up with his daughter Sophie, and it seemed she wasn't as innocent as she may have appeared. We also encountered an old acquaintance of Devis' with a score to settle.
So the story continues...
We were left with Devis being shot at, so the question is everybody going to make it out Ok? And I'll leave it as something to find out for yourself.
We do get a bit more on Sophie's background and what led her to the events that began this series. With Sophie and Devis stuck in the middle of nowhere and needing medical help and also being held at gunpoint the pressure is on, although it wasn't quite tense enough for me, I wasn't as anxious as I'd liked. Also the end of the episode lacked a bit of drama - I think I would have liked a game changing cliff hanger or something that would have left me wanting to find out whats next.
It is a very much a Devis led series, and this episode is really a two parter with the last, and is enjoyable.
