He's Gone

Rate this book
On the day we chose our wedding rings, my fiancé vanished into thin air.

You had brought me tea and scrambled eggs in bed, and we snuggled together, talking about buying our rings, and then about our wedding later next year.

Then we had chosen the rings. You held my hand and gazed thoughtfully at the ring I liked best, a smile spreading slowly over your face. Then champagne at Selfridges to celebrate. We talked about the beautiful lilac flowers I had chosen for the wedding, the number of bottles of wine we had bought for the day and if we needed more. I felt flushed, excited and content.

We race to get the train home. It screams to a halt and I run towards its open doors. Made it.

I think you’re right behind me — but when I turn around, you’re gone.

Predictable, slow, and un-relatable characters

Many thanks to Joffe Books for this free eARC.

I loved the premise and so wanted to love the read. The opening paragraph set the scene wonderfully: ‘The train screamed to a halt and I ran towards its open doors. My foot bounced into the carriage just as a beeping indicated they were about to close. Triumphantly I hauled my other leg inside. Made it. I thought you were right behind me. But you weren’t.’ Unfortunately, the plot unraveled from there.

One of the big no-no’s in dialogue is to have one person say, ‘As you know’, because if the person you’re speaking to knows then you wouldn’t need to tell them. Instead, you find an interesting way of showing the information necessary to your reader. Sometimes, the things mentioned weren’t even relevant. This happened over and over, and along with the passive writing, filler words, split infinitives, and comma splices, etc., this became an arduous task rather than a relaxing read.

The majority of the book revolved around the abandoned fiancée panicking and running around doing everyone’s head in and getting nowhere. The constant sniping of a few of the people soon grew tiresome.

I found the ending predictable and didn’t care about any of the characters by that point. My main emotion was relief I’d finished.

***

NOTE ON RATINGS: I consider a 3-star rating a positive review. Picky about which books I give 5 stars to, I reserve this highest rating for the stories I find stunning and which moved me.

5 STARS: IT WAS AMAZING! I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN! — Highly Recommended.

4 STARS: I WOULD PULL AN ALL-NIGHTER — Go read this book.

3 STARS: IT WAS GOOD! — An okay read. Didn’t love it. Didn’t hate it.

2 STARS: I MAY HAVE LIKED A FEW THINGS —Lacking in some areas: writing, characterisation, and/or problematic plot lines.

1 STAR: NOT MY CUP OF TEA —Lots of issues with this book.

He’s Gone By Rebecca Collomosse is a debut for this author and she had a great twist at the end that I was not expecting at all. It starts off with Eve and John shopping for wedding rings. Eve makes the train and John doesn’t. Did he disappear? Is he on another train? This kept me glued until the end. Looking forward to her next thriller. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release in exchange for my honest review.

Title: He's Gone by REBECCA COLLOMOSSE

Rating: 3.5 Stars

Rebecca Collomosse’s "He's Gone" begins with a romantic high that quickly spirals into a heart-pounding mystery.

What starts as a perfect day for Eve—breakfast in bed, shopping for wedding rings, and champagne at Selfridges—turns into a nightmare when her fiancé, John, vanishes without a trace.

This slow-burn thriller, though initially confusing with its perspectives, eventually pulled me into its intricate web of suspense and intrigue.

Eve and John are a picture of happiness, excitedly planning their wedding and revelling in their love. But the day they choose their wedding rings, everything changes. After a joyful shopping spree and celebration, John inexplicably disappears as they rush to catch a train home. One moment he’s there, the next he’s gone, leaving Eve confused, terrified, and desperate for answers.

What I Loved:

- Intriguing Premise: The sudden disappearance of John on what should be a joyous day sets up a compelling mystery. Although quite a simple start lead to such a compelling storyline. The contrast between the romantic beginning and the ensuing chaos hooks you right from the start.

- Emotional Depth: Eve’s emotions are palpable as she grapples with the shock and fear of John’s disappearance. Her journey from confusion to determination to find him is deeply engaging.

- Realistic Portrayal of Grief and Anxiety: The novel does an excellent job of depicting the emotional rollercoaster that Eve goes through. Her panic, her hope, and her despair are all realistically portrayed, making her a relatable and sympathetic protagonist.

- Slow-Burn Mystery: While the pacing is gradual, the slow unraveling of the mystery keeps you invested. Each clue and revelation adds to the suspense, making the payoff all the more satisfying.

- Character Development: As the story progresses, both Eve and John’s characters are fleshed out through different perspectives, adding depth to their relationship and the overall narrative.

The book’s structure, with its multiple perspectives, can be confusing initially. It took me some time to get used to the writing style and while the mystery is engaging, some of the plot twists and turns are somewhat predictable.. However once I got into the story I loved it!

"He's Gone" is a gripping tale of love, loss, and the desperate search for answers.

Despite a somewhat confusing start and predictable elements, the emotional depth and slow-burn mystery make it a worthwhile read. Eve’s journey through fear, hope, and determination is compelling and relatable, drawing you into her world as she uncovers the truth behind John’s disappearance.

If you enjoy slow-burn mysteries with emotional depth and a touch of romance then this book is for you!

Thank you to The Publisher Joffe Books & The Author REBECCA COLLOMOSSE for an advanced reader copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest review.

This book had potential—a psychological thriller about a woman questioning her husband’s disappearance, dealing with grief, guilt etc. But it just didn’t deliver. First off, the main character is... bland. She’s one of those people where you can’t really get a sense of who she is, and her actions often feel totally random. I get that she’s supposed to be unraveling emotionally, but she just comes off as flat and unrelatable (and terribly whiny). I’m afraid you don’t really care what happens to her, which is a huge issue when the whole book relies on her emotional journey.

The pacing is another problem. The first half is extremely slow—just her thinking and thinking and thinking, which could’ve been okay if it built towards something, but it didn’t! Then, when the plot finally kicks in, the twists feel more like eye-roll moments than real surprises. Everything feels terribly predictable, and the “big reveals” are just full of convenient plot twists that don’t feel earned.

This story could’ve been a really poignant exploration of grief or a solid psychological thriller, but it never goes deep enough on either front. It’s frustrating because you can see how it could’ve been a good book, but it just doesn’t get there. If you’re looking for a real page-turner in this genre, you’ll definitely find better options. Shame.

great twist at the ending but not worth the book

The protagonist was very difficult to read about, seriously thought she had a personality disorder at times, she was so incredibly self centered, self pitying and self righteous about everyone and everything, it’s shocking she had friends at all and completely not shocking why her fiancé would disappear.
Book started well but by around 20-30% in, it was already too redundant with the millionth complaint from the protagonist about how no one could possibly be suffering the way she was. This, sadly, continues throughout the book, and somehow manages to worsen. I finished the book nonetheless and def a star for the twist at the end, which was good - but by that time, I just wanted to be away the entire thing.

Possibly spoiler below:
I had multiple issues with the protagonist. I found her completely narrow minded - all she cared about was her suffering and anyone else around her who didnt directly address her suffering was problematic but when they did, she was angry that they had sympathy for her or angry that they were honest with her or angry that they were sad about the situation themselves. She was also quite delusional, which I found understandable to a degree - but to the point of sheer stupidity (duh change the locks, how long does this have to be dragged out for). Then the whole female-female competitor trope was pretty predictable and old, I could have forgiven that still but the personality of the protagonist - not surprising he left.

⭐️⭐️ This is my personal 5 star rating system because I’m too lazy to write a review for every book.

5 stars -> OMFG. I couldn’t stop listening. I was engaged from beginning to end. The story & narrator was amazing. I 100% recommend this book & author. I was able to clearly follow each and every character.

4 stars -> It was pretty good. I would’ve rated 5 stars, But either the ending was lacking, I struggled to keep up with characters, or the story didn’t keep me fully engaged. The narrator was pretty good as well. I’m on the fence about recommending this book, It could go either way.

3 Stars -> It was boring at times & I missed chunks of the story. I most likely struggled to keep up with character developments. The only way I would recommend this book is if it was part of a series. The narrator was most likely average or just couldn’t fix a mediocre book.

2 Stars -> It was pretty horrible. I used it as background noise because I hadn’t had a chance to search for another book. The book either had a bad narrator, The character development was non existent, or the story was hot garbage. I would not recommend this book.

1 Star -> The absolute only reason I listened to this book was because i had no time to search for another one & I needed background noise. It was 1 step up from listening to the radio. I wouldn’t recommend this book to my worst enemy. Everything about this book was terrible. This is only recommended for people on death row and have absolutely nothing else to read.

This was a great plot, her husband disappears from the train and 90% of the story is from the POV of the wife, every single feeling is described including what is happening, I skipped between chapters and was able to still know what was going on... You can skip to chapter 30 and get a summary of the whole story... Your welcome.

Listened to the audiobook and it was tough to get through. The main character is so unlikable and self-centred, if I was her fiancé I'd have run away too 😂

3.5 stars. This is one of those stories that has a great setup, but when you get to the destination you're kind of disappointed. There were great thriller-y aspects making you, as the reader, apprehensive, on edge, and maybe a wee bit skeered!!! However, I realized that by the end I didn't even care what happened to the missing fiance. There are plenty of suspects and suspicious behaviors. I'm not sure you will be able to narrow down who could be behind all the happenings, at least I wasn't able. When all is said and done I did not care for how things wrapped up.

Oh well! This book was inhabited by unlikeable characters! And really if you hate your „best friend“ so much and is no best friend to you why don’t you stop being her friend??? Awesome idea to ruin her life instead even more. Oh and this last chapter from John?? Really that was all so ridiculous.

Her fiance disappears on the second page of the first chapter and she spends the next 30 chapters whining about it. I got to chapter 8 and couldn’t bear any more, I sympathise with the fiance for disappearing and wished that I could disappear too, but I wanted to know what had happened to him so I jumped to chapter 30 of 33, messed absolutely nothing, she was still whining, and the plot twists and bit of activity that existed, happened in those final three chapters. I’ve never had a book before where I could jump and miss out 22 chapters, and yet Not be able to see the joins, LOL! Not good. Storyline has some flimsy potential but I didn’t enjoy the writing at all.

Truly not sure why I finished it lol . Maybe I just wanted to see what happened to him? Idk. But I really disliked the way this way written. I hated how it was a journal essentially for her to him. Idk boring. Wasn’t a fan of the ending. Totally can pass on this one

An interesting premise that kept me interested throughout this story .

What would you do if your fiancé just disappeared ?

One moment you are incredibly happy having just both purchased your rings for your upcoming wedding, then as you manage to make it to the train taking you home, he misses it,.

Him, on the platform, the only image left imprinted on your mind.

As the time passes, and trains come and go, there is no sign of John.

Then, hours turn into days, turn into months, then a year has passed with no sightings.

For Evie, the struggle to understand the “why” of it all has become overwhelming.

There are concerns from friends and family trying to help, but it doesn’t ease the pain as her and John’s Wedding date draws near, and still, no fiancé

Also, Evie is struggling with the strange miss placement of items in her and John’s flat.

Messing with her mental health

Leading her to believe that maybe he is still around her ….
Perhaps,…suffering some kind of breakdown.

Matters are not helped though, by the fact that Evie finds out things about John.

Secrets

Things he never told her about.

How well did she really know her fiancé?

Interesting story that kept me engaged as I was dying to know what really happened to John, and who this mystery person known as “ The Black Rose” who lived to torment Evie was.

Interesting also that over the course of a year, Evie’s friends group went through their own ups and downs, with couples breaking up, and others forming new relationships.

There were elements of this story also that were … in MY opinion, ODD!!!

Like how Evie delt with her loss amongst her friends
( Clive , in particular)

As this story was, at times, told from the POV of the perpetrator AND this voice in Audible is FEMALE! it leads you to suspect every female friend, or acquaintance Evie comes into contact with.

As the story reaches its end, and it seems we are finally going to find out what happened to John, there is a plot twist, of sorts, that is extremely annoying from this readers POV.

( seriously! The location! the timing! I could see what was going to happen… WHY? … Just WHY? EVIE? )

Which lead to THAT Ending!!!

That final chapter!!!

It had me screaming!!! … WHAT? WHAT???

This book was just meh for me. It bills itself as a psychological thriller, but I didn’t feel that much thrill. And that “shocking final twist”? Again…meh. Not that shocking. And frankly, pretty frustrating, too. There is no resolution.

The premise was interesting: Eve’s fiancé, who was right behind her as they got on the Tube from wedding ring shopping, vanishes. We see Eve’s progression as she discovers secrets he’d been keeping and works through the various stages of grief. Each time she starts to accept that he’s really gone, something happens—his watch goes missing, a picture of them disappears—and she begins to hope again.

There is a second narrative voice, that of whoever is messing with Eve, and it is a threatening one. Breadcrumbs are dropped for us to figure out who it is, but it doesn’t seem to answer the question: Where did he go?

Eve has to deal with a lot of guilt as she picks up the pieces and moves on with her life. She’s not always a very good friend. She has problems at her job. She feels guilty when she buys a house with the money they had saved together.

The way the narrative is set—as if she is actually talking to John, telling him all that is happening. It’s an interesting device, always talking to “you”, but I’m not sure I liked it.

Possible Objectionable Material:
Drinking, sex (not described in detail), mind-games, swearing (including the F-word), recovery from trauma.

Who Might Like This Book:
Those who like trying to solve a mystery, especially a missing-person story.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing an advanced reader copy in exchange for my opinion.

Promising premise based on the synopsis, but book was tedious to read. Was going to quit reading around 41% but continued to the end since this is the author's debut book. Very strange writing style which mixed second and third person and detracted from the storyline. Prefer that author picks one POV and sticks with it. Characters not developed enough to care about them, especially not the missing fiance, and more is needed to create suspense about what happened to him. Since that was severely lacking, the ending was not a surprise at all. Most of the book was slow and repetitive and I guessed who the stalker was early on. The "friends" were each their own type of terrible: treat each other horribly, apologize, "forgive" each other then wash, rinse, repeat. Overall an unbelievable and unenjoyable read.

I’m a little irritated with the ending of this book. This is not one of my typical go to reads, but I got hooked from the beginning. I couldn’t stop listening to it. Of all the different scenarios of how this could have ended, the actual ending was a disappointment. I hope there will be a sequel with another twist. Maybe Eve didn’t really die? Could she be planning to play mind tricks on Jess to get a confession out of her? I will look for a sequel and would be willing to give this 5 stars if Eve is still alive. I was so happy she was moving on, so I’d like to see her happy with Ethan in a sequel.

Should have been a good book from the synopsis. But it dragged along so so slowly. By the time we got the twist, I just didn’t care.

Spoilers!
To remind myself:- boyfriend/fiance goes missing. fiancé Eve’s best friend Jess had affair with him. Jess hates her “best friend” Eve and plays tricks to upset her. Twist is Jess kills Eve pushing her off cliff in rage. Then we get letter from the miss fiancé at end he’s sorry and coming back (but Eve is dead)

Just wanted it over!

Horrible MC, hard to feel sympathy for. Totally self centered and kept whining about the same things. As much as I hate giving bad reviews, just can’t bring myself to rate it higher. I thought it fairly obvious who was doing what, and the final chapters comprise the worst ending ever.

This book was slow and repetitive. Most of the characters were narcissistic and unlikeable. The culprit was fairly obvious from the beginning. There were also strong undertones that a woman having a man equals happiness and a great life, and a woman without a man equals miserable - this was the case for multiple characters.

Too long, killing Eve sucked. The ending did not do much as Eve is dead. It seemed obvious he was not dead.

My anxiety always struggles when I have to get a train or the tube. One because I find them extremely claustrophobic and two because of exactly what happened here...

I literally finished this last night and devoured it over 24hrs, it was such a compelling read and had me gripped from the opening paragraphs.

Is this a debut? Because it sure didn't read like one. It took me on a fast paced journey with Eve as she came to terms with her missing fiance and her stalker. Just when I thought I'd got it all sussed out Collomosse chucked another curveball into the mix.

The suspense and tension didn't let up once, the twists kept a coming and the characters were great.

He's Gone is a well written, enjoyable read that I have no hesitations in recommending

Omg....how many times have you raced to catch that tram or tube and just made - or not.
This really brought back that panic of racing to catch the tube with the kids and counting them on next to you, 3 times, to make sure you're all still together!!

This is what happens to Eve and John. After picking out their wedding rings, they race to catch the train home and just make it - but when Eve turns around, John has gone!

We dive straight into this one which immediately gripped me with such a great opening few chapters.
As the story develops we are kept on edge as more and more strange things happen.
This gave me the same kind of feeling as a stalker thriller, but every time I thought I was getting to the bottom of things, more and more twists would follow.

I really felt sorry for Eve because she not only lost her closest companion in John, those who rallied around her to help out then come under suspicion making it impossible to know who to trust.

This was packed with suspense and had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish - I honestly didn't want to put it down.
The whole premise was brilliant and the ending even better.

A well written book which kept me immersed throughout and I can't wait to read more by this author.

As I was reading this book, I was convinced that the ending would be like another book I’d read. So much so that it distracted from my enjoyment. Thankfully I was wrong. However, I hated the ending! And the extra twist was just an annoyance. Now I’m afraid to read more of her books!

Spoiler alert:

There should be a trigger warning about not having a HEA. The writing was good, the story was intriguing and kept me listening. But how could ANYONE have a worse sense of self safety? Multiple times in the story I was appalled at the lack of self preservation, someone does all that to you and you go outside alone with them?? Idiot. Also I figured out the person responsible early, even though there are other likely suspects.
