CD Reiss is a New York Times bestselling author. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn't pick up she's at the well hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master's degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

She's frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn't ever gotten her out of chopping a single cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

5 Stars!!! Incredible Audiobook!!!

Listen, I don't read a lot of paranormal romance anymore, but this vampire/mafia story had me HOOKED. The cast is amazing and they live recorded most of the book. Very expressive performances. Great accent work. Fire. Absolute fire. I could not stop posting about it on social media.

CD Reiss really delivered on a complex plot and storyline and I look forward to the rest of the series. Samantha Brentmoor, Jason Clarke, Rose Dioro and Dane Anderson SLAP.

Even if you aren't in to vampires, give this performance a chance. It may truly surprise you. This audiobook is worth every penny.

I found the pacing a bit slow, which made it difficult for me to stay engaged. While it may resonate with some readers, it just wasn't the right fit for me.

***Thank you to NetGalley, C.D. Reiss, and Dreamscape Select for graciously sending me the audiobook to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***

This was like a slow addiction. I didn't realize I was addicted until it was too late. Dang that ending! I had to search all over the internet to see if book two was available and I just didn't know it. Sadly, I could not find one mention. Oh the torture of having to wait. I seriously need to know what happens next!!

I loved this book.

I want to read this book every day for the rest of my life. I'm having a hard time putting my emotions into words, I loved it that much.

It's CD Reiss at her best. Carmine is the return of Antonio or Jonathan with the way he talks and his attitude and well, his f*cking. He's just sex on legs. And he's just full of contradictions. Cruel but kind, a leader but lost, strong but weak. I adore this man.
Luna is strong and sexy and wants answers and won't be bossed around by anyone. She's not scared and no one knows what to do with her. It's really a fascinating world and I am loving it. The last few chapters take such an interesting twist that I didn't see coming like, AT ALL. So I will patiently (kind of) wait for the next one to be released

The audiobook is a masterpiece. Jason Clarke is so sexy and Samantha Brentmoor is amazing. It's a full cast production and Dane Anderson and Rose Dioro do so many voices with so many accents and languages....truly a fantastic job.
This audio is so amazing. And it will have an hour of bloopers and conversations and extras. Just lovely.

Audio arc review

I struggled sooooo bad it was just so boring the main narrators for the fmc/mmc I’ve heard before and are actually really good (separately) but together there was nothing no emotion it was one tone the whole way through and tbh they made it boring

Otherwise the plot was there but was ruined by similar authors with the same tones.

Sorry I wouldn’t listen to the next one but I would physically read it for sure.

⭐️⭐️(because of narration)

Thank you netgalley and dreamscape select for the audio book arc

🎧 Audiobook Review: Blood Bride (immortal Empire, #1)

Author: C.D. Reiss
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Narrators: Jason Clarke, Samantha Brentmoor, Dane Anderson, Rose Dioro

📚 Plot & Characters

Luna Beneforte is a woman adrift—her only tie to family being a mother confined to an asylum. When a letter arrives from distant relatives in Italy promising an inheritance, Luna seizes the chance to uncover her roots. Her mother once whispered of a mysterious book that could save them both, a relic hidden among their kin. But what Luna discovers is far darker: her family is entangled with the Italian Mafia.

Gifted with an uncanny ability to read emotions, Luna has always kept her secret close. Enter Carmine Montefiore—a 500-year-old vampire king, newly awakened after decades of stasis. To regain his full strength, he requires the blood of a Strega witch. Aligning himself with the Mafia, Carmine demands a bride in exchange for his protection. The moment he sees Luna, he knows she is the witch he craves—and manipulates her family into offering her up.

---

🌟 Highlights

• The fusion of mafia intrigue and paranormal romance creates a deliciously dark atmosphere, dripping with danger and allure.
• Carmine embodies the archetype of the seductive vampire—magnetic, powerful, and undeniably sexy. He’s every bit the brooding immortal, though his treatment of women left me conflicted.
• The romance smolders as a slow burn, but when Luna and Carmine finally surrender to passion, the payoff is fiery and unforgettable.
• Carmine’s vulnerability—his diminished power and looming enemies—adds suspense and tension, making the stakes feel razor-sharp.

---

⤵️ Low Points

• Carmine’s fixation on killing Luna after claiming her blood casts a disturbing shadow over their relationship. His fantasies of passion entwined with violence may unsettle some listeners.
• While the narration and characters shine, the plot pacing drags. I usually devour audiobooks in a single day, but this one stretched across four to five, leaving me restless at times.

---

🎙️ Narration

The multi-cast duet narration elevates the story. Jason Clarke’s gravelly timbre oozes menace and sensuality, perfectly embodying Carmine. Samantha Brentmoor’s soft yet intelligent delivery captures Luna’s resilience and vulnerability. Dane Anderson and Rose Dioro round out the cast with expressive performances that enrich the world. The duet format, with four distinct voices, adds cinematic depth—making the audiobook feel alive and immersive.

---

💬 Final Thoughts

This audiobook is a moody blend of mafia grit and vampire seduction, perfect for listeners who crave danger laced with desire. While the pacing may test your patience, the narration, steamy payoff, and exciting action toward the end make the journey worthwhile. If you’re drawn to morally complex heroes and heroines caught between fate and family, Luna and Carmine’s story will sink its teeth into you.

---

⏸️ Quotes

“I want to love and be loved. I just don’t know how that is possible.”

“Never accept less than what you are. Even from me.”

“His magic sex venom is wearing off, and soreness is creeping in.”

“An Italian royal heir. Of course, the most entitled of the entitled. Women were probably zombified for him long before he ever got turned into what he is.”

“Do you need an invitation every time?”
“I want it.”

“I want to give her everything, but she wants nothing.”

Vampires?
Mafia?
CD Reiss?
Sign.Me.Up. IMMEDIATELY. Christine’s writing style is one that is distinctively her own and I am obsessed with it.
But, let me tell you, I was wholly unprepared for this book.

Christine, Christine, Christine.
Maam. WTAF?!

I am legitimately at a loss of what to say. How in the word do you expect me to find the words to describe this sinfully delicious, titillatingly addictive experience that is Carmine and Luna’s story?! Dark fascination meets alluring chemistry meets deadly temptation. That ending…my jaw literally dropped and I was left shooketh, confused and positively mind blown.

The audio was specfreakingtacular! The accents. The sound effects that perfectly fit the story.
The multi-cast duet narration by Jason Clarke, Samantha Brentmoor, Dane Anderson, Rose Dioro. Their performance just intensified the mystery, intrigue, passion, fire, emotion and undeniable excitement that was Blood Bride.

Not for me, did not like writing style. 50% I was lost... many pages were a brainstorm of words that were written in paragraphs together. Another 25% the author i swear was high when writing this, and decided to leave it like that... and the rest was an OK plot.

This book. I expected to enjoy it because I love CD Reiss. I know her writing style. I know how good it is. And this did not disappoint.
I was enthralled (wink wink) It's Vampire Mafia. If that's not something to love, I don't know what is. It has all the makings of both vampire and mafia stories but with the classic CD Reiss spin on it.
You're probably gonna hear a lot about Carmine, and rightly so, but for me? I am all about Luna. I loved her so much. She doesn't just give in and be like, oh yeah, vampires. She is reluctant. She is questioning, she doesn't know what is going on. And I felt like I was with her on that journey. At some points, I had to remind myself that these were vampires. They're not going to do the same things as contemporary 'heroes'. I had to recalibrate my thought processes as I was getting annoyed because I was like what? Why is this happening? Why are they doing this? You know, the same as Luna. Maybe we are all Luna.
There are some very fun scenes. The build-up of tension was just delicious. Speaking of, the way CD Reiss builds worlds and builds tension is just its own unique thing. So brilliantly captivating.
This book will leave you with questions and theories...and knowing CD Reiss none will be correct.

This is a Duet/multicast narration. Samantha Brentmoor & Jason Clarke, with Rose Dioro & Dane Anderson. All four of these narrators were just bringing it. You might need to pay a little bit more attention than you usually would with these narrators as three of them use Italian accents. They do phenomenal, I was blown away by all of them but the standout for me was Rose Dioro, she plays a 12-year-old vampire—male, Italian vampire, excuse me. The way she performed it showcased her amazing talent. The way her voice conveyed that he was forever 12 but also that he had been alive for so long that he had experienced a lot—like a young, old soul. How does she do it? Absolutely blew me away. Samantha Brentmoor continues to cement her place in listeners hearts by bringing her incredible mix of vulnerability and fire to Luna, which really gave her life and allowed listeners to connect on a deeper level. Jason as Carmine was just brilliant casting, he exuded the power of the vampiric Italian mafia capo, who also has to battle his vulnerabilities for…reasons, so well. And Dane, hello there. Well, if this wasn't quite the introduction to his skillset. He voices several different Italian characters and each had their own personalities and quirks that he gave life to fantastically.
The production was great, there were a couple of things where I was like oh I see what you're doing there. Cool. Cool. Highly recommend.

I have a sudden and unexplained craving for oranges. Not just any oranges, blood oranges.

I also have a sudden craving for a particularly beautiful vampire called Carmine Montefiore.

You can keep your sparkling vampires and your friends of Buffy and Tom. There’s a new kid on the block and he’s pale, cranky and murdery.

Not going to lie, I read this book so fast that I actually had to read it again and I am so glad that I did. I needed to step back from wanting to rip its throat out with my teeth, to slow down and savour it.

Carmine appears like this confident capo, Raven King, prince of Naples but he’s just a scared little vampire who needs the love of a good witch. Did I mention, I could be part witch and I love oranges?

Luna Beneforte, lover of McDonald’s, sometime mind mixer, oh she is just peachy - or orangey! I want to bite her perfect throat and kiss her tears. She also wins the award for best use of a vampire’s tongue ever. Forget the tampons ladies, get a vampire.

I’m on my way to New York to find a knife made of the lava of Vesuvius so I can get me my own vampire.

Wow! What a ride. I want to add loads of quotes because I highlighted the shit out of this book but I’m saving them until the actual book comes out and I can do kindle quotes….Maybe just a couple of little ones.

“He is a dark vortex of nothing. A void of emotions. Divine beauty untouched by humanity….He is the darkest night at a time before electricity. He is undisturbed earth. He is the fire beneath the mountain.”

“I am not a man. I am a creature. An animal. I am an instrument of entropy. I devour lifetimes and hunt eras.”

When it comes to C.D. Reiss I know she can give good story. And when it comes to her mafia books? She is absolute perfection at creating a world that seems realistic, dark, yet enticing and one you want to be a part of at the same time. She's the top of the game, bar none. But adding vampires to the mafia? How could it be more perfect?!

Right from the start of Blood Bride I was drawn into the story, its characters and the way everything was building up. Luna is our feisty, strong and beautiful American that is summoned to collect an inheritance across the Atlantic. Once there, she is thrust into an unfamiliar world that includes beautiful men and oranges (#iykyk), vanishing rooms, and ravens watching over her.
Carmine meanwhile has had a very long nap and awakens to a world that may be a bit different than he remembers, but he is Capo, no? He exudes strength, power and sex like no one's business. And when he sets eyes on his future bride, he knows that he must have her as her essence calls to him.

Well, holy crap! Blood Bride is only book one of the Immortal Empire series and I am absolutely consumed by a world that is rich in beauty and plays out like a movie that I want to see on the big screen. I listened to the audiobook and am done. DONE!! Samantha Brentmoor is absolute perfection as Luna and gives as good as she gets. And Jason Clarke?! Tell me one man that can give better sexy, growly vampire. He owns his performance and had me literally dripping.....with anticipation every time he talked. And I cannot forget about Rose Dioro and Dane Anderson taking up the supporting characters and bringing this story and its full cast of characters to life. Such perfect casting!

Have I talked much about the actual story? No. But do I need to say more than Mafia and Vampires set on Naples? Again, no. Because it is a damn perfect combination when adding it the lush and cinematic writing of C.D. Reiss. Read it or listen to it and be consumed. Because that last line? You will want more NOW! You all aren’t ready for this one!

Narration 🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧

This book was WILD! And WTH was that ending?!!! To be honest I didn’t know what was happening like half the time. There are a lot of characters in play and I was trying to figure out who was who and what was what and who can do what with what magic/powers. It’s a lot. So I think this book was a lot of laying ground work for future books in the series. The writing was brilliant though. This was my first CD Reiss book and I can’t wait for the rest of the books in this series.

Basically we have an ancient vampire mafia king, Carmine, who everyone thought was dead for the last 50 years after being staked in the heart, but in order to restore his power he needs the blood of a specific lineage of witches. Luna is lured to Italy by long lost family and an inheritance. Their paths cross and Carmine has found his blood bride. He is determined to have her and while he does take her captive and makes her his bride, she makes it very clear that she is not giving consent for any of it…until she does.

This narration was incredible. I mentioned there were a lot of characters…it was definitely necessary for a full cast on this just for the side characters. Dane and Rose were brilliant in how many different accents and voices they came up with for all the characters. Samantha and Jason are my two favorites and I loved them as always. They did such a great job bringing Luna and Carmine to life.

🌶️🌶️🌶️

This was a crazy ride and I thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook. Blood Bride is the first part of a duet, so be prepared for a crazy cliffhanger.

Carmine is a vampire and mafia capo in Italy. He has woken from stasis after a bad injury and he is unable to reach his complete power. He needs a Strega witches blood to help him, but now they are very rare. He is struggling until he scents a Strega witch in Ital, Luna Beneforte.

Luna was tricked into coming to Italy for an inheritance and now she is stick in Carmine's world. He forces her into a marriage and needs her blood to restore his powers. For some reason, he is unable to bite her or put her under his thrall. What makes her different?

I found myself getting confused a few times in the book and I was left with so many questions. The pacing was not perfect and some parts were a little slow, but I was still intrigued throughout the story.

This audiobook had a full cast with duet narration. It sucked me in and I was fully immersed in this world. Jason Clarke and Samantha Brentmoor did an amazing job, as usual. I would highly recommend the audio.

Thank you to Must Love Audio for providing the audiobook to prepare for the second part of the duet.

I DNF'd at 70%. For me, CD Reiss is known to be long winded, very slow paced, slow burns, and repetitive. This is no different.

I liked the idea of the Vampire mafia king needing a witch to sustain him, but again, slow and boring. At 70% I felt like there had been no progress at all. It was just repeating the same thing over and over. I just don't want to sacrifice any more of my life to boring books.

I don’t know what to say except give me more! My goodness, Carmine with all his crankiness and his hotness and his powerful everything ;) He can only see what he has always known, but Luna shows him another way..or does she?!
Thus story kept me glued from start to end..and that ending.. as I said, I need more!
This vampire world is not your typical, and not only because we are talking about mafia vampires, which is pretty cool on its own. Cd Reiss has a way with words and she is masterful at guiding you in and through a new powerful and dark world.
Breathtaking and stunning, a glorious ride!

— blood bride ALC review 🎧

This was my very first vampire romance, and it did not disappoint 😏 it had no business being so hot that I couldn’t believe I was into this 😂 it made me view things differently going forward.

For example. 𝗢𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀. I will never be able to peel an orange and rip it in half without salivating. 𝗠𝗰𝗗𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗱’𝘀. I don’t think I can step foot into one for a while. In TX we have a spicy chicken sandwich that’s called 𝙝𝙤𝙩 & 𝙨𝙥𝙞𝙘𝙮 and now all I’m thinking about is Carmine Montefiore & Luna Beneforte. 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝘁. I’ve never had feelings towards spit play and now I need it like Cheerios. 𝗩𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗺. I used to be in love with Edward Cullen, but who is he at this point?! Step aside Eddie and let daddy Carmine show you how it’s really done 🤪

This story was extremely addicting. I’ve listen to it twice and still gasp at the cliffhanger. I need book two now. I need it like I need to pay my rent. It’s crucial!

You guys NEED to get this on kickstarter! I promise you the audio is so worth it! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...

Close to 4 stars, but not really. I don't even know how to rate this. Maybe 4, but not? Man, I dunno.

Listen, I don't read books from this author for the plot. She writes great smut and her stories are catchy as hell (as weird as the writing is sometimes, as confusing as the plot is sometimes and as unconventional as the expressions and sentences are sometimes). I know what I'm getting myself into, okay? It's mostly a fast-paced mindfuckery with great smut and questionable morals. Sometimes you hate the characters but damn, there is always this heart wrenching, gut punching feel to her stories. She does great angst and damn, it's just entertaining.

The beginning was 3 stars top, but that ending? God dammit, I need to abandon my real life duties and go read the second book :D :D :D

This review is a mess and so am I!

DNF @ 70%

I’ve had this on pause at 70% since last summer and officially giving up on the “let’s circle back” mentality I have with this audiobook, I’m not gonna finish it and I’ll make peace with it 🧘‍♀️

From what I remember the narration was absolutely superb, honestly SO good! And so many amazing narrators all done in duet.

But the story was just all over the place to try follow. I was lost for the majority of it and even rewinding I still wasn’t able to make sense of what was happening.

🌶️ The spice - I was expecting a lot more horny blood soaked vampire fuck fests, and sadly was left very disappointed 🥲 I think there were a few hot scenes in the 70% I listened to but not that much for what I thought It was going to be

If you’re going to listen to it maybe grab the ebook as well to read along, I think it would’ve been a better experience if I was reading

4 stars.

I love CD Reiss' writing. She writes it, I will read it.

Mafia... not usually for me. But vampires?! HELLO YOU CALLED?

Paranormal romance is so back in my rotation and this was another great addition to my read books this year.

The 'magic' system, is a smidge different from the usual. The use of italian was hot af. I loved our FMC and couldn't help but love our MMC, seemingly a perfect match for each other.

Yes yes yes, I'd like the next one please.

I'm re-listening to Blood Bride so I am thoroughly present when listening to Book 2, Deep Thrall, which picks up right where Blood Bride left off. The narration is outstanding with Jason Clarke as 500 years old Vampire, Carmine, and Samantha Brentmoor as the plucky Stragar Witch, Luna. Loving every second of it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 3.5 Stars — Dark, steamy, and a little uneven

Blood Bride has a rich gothic vibe that pulled me in right away. The atmosphere is moody, the tension is thick, and—let’s be honest—the seductive, dangerous energy between the characters is definitely the highlight. C.D. Reiss knows how to write scenes that make you lean in like you’re eavesdropping on something you probably shouldn’t hear… and enjoying every second of it.

That said, the pacing felt a little uneven for me. There were moments where the story had me totally hooked, and others where I just wanted things to push forward a bit faster. The world and lore had great potential, but I found myself wishing they were explored just a little more deeply.

Overall, it’s a dark, twisty read with plenty of spice and intrigue—perfect for anyone who loves their romance with teeth. I liked it, didn’t love it, but I absolutely see why people devour this kind of slow-burn danger. If you want seductive tension with a sharp edge, this one delivers.

Yesss please I want more more more from this series.

Carmine is a vampire from Italy. He's newly awakened and in need of sustenance of a certain kind. He's cold, calculated, and very much imbedded in the Mafia....meaning, he IS the Mafia, and everyone else is just pretending in his absence. I loved his raw power and unyielding demeanor. This man is a boss and owns it.

Enter the heroine, Luna. She's a fun, quirky character. Very hippy, very subdued, and totally aloof sometimes. Her interactions with Carmine are sexy and awkward at the same time. I mean, they're sexy because Carmine oozes sex appeal out of his pores, and I think that's largely because the narrator in the audiobook perfectly portrayed the man that Carmine was.

Carmine and Luna are so much fun as a pair. Their unique push and pull kept me intrigued in what would happen next between them. This book was a slow burn but I felt like it came and went so quickly. The plot, storyline build-up, and emotions of the characters were perfectly written. I felt all the yearning, angsty goodness from both characters, and couldn't wait to gobble up more of their interactions.

This book ends on one hell of a cliffhanger, so be prepared to have a book hangover! I can't wait for book 2, and hopefully, 3, 4, 5, etc!

What a wild ride! This is very different to anything I’ve read in a very long time, but I do love vampires so I was absolutely hooked right away. Luna is a really intriguing FMC, and I found myself both cheering her on and wanting to shake some sense into her at various points throughout the story 😂

*I received an ALC of this book, all opinions are my own*

This story has so many facets, and you never know who can/can’t be trusted at any moment. I do agree with some reviews saying that the pacing after 50% is a bit slow, however the audiobook’s duet narration was so captivating that I was fully engaged despite the bit of lag in the plot between 60-80%.

I’m also so glad that I’ve got an ALC of boom two to jump right into immediately because I have to know what happens next!
