Hana is back from suspension, but that hasn’t prompted the resumption of romance between himself and Nanase. As the two drift ever further apart, it feels like things are absolutely hopeless, and, well, they are when two dummies are involved.
Imagine one of those sci-if tropes where the ship is trapped in a decaying orbit or runs out of fuel and disaster is looming. Now imagine this scenario, but the ship has full power and fuel, it’s just that nobody can be bothered to take charge and they simply let disaster happen. That’s this book.
Hana and Nanase break up and for seemingly no reason whatsoever. There’s some nonsense later on where Hana comments that he was letting Nanase fill too much of a mother role for him, which is very out of nowhere. This is, in turn, countered by somebody giving him advice that is such howlingly bad psychology that I had to put the book down to collect myself.
But the crux of this is that it happens and even though it is blatantly obvious nobody wants this, they let it happen anyway. There was a minimal fight, if it could even be called that, and they were separated for A WEEK while Hana was suspended and that’s all it takes for their entire relationship to implode? Really!?
Look, I get it, fumbled, awkward words hurt bad (trust me, been there as both giver and receiver). But they shouldn’t cause this much damage when these two were doing amazing up to that point. It doesn’t have any logic behind it and, while I like the idea of exploring a break in a relationship, nothing here makes narrative sense.
And again, it’s not like situations don’t spiral out of control for no good reason, but I cannot for the life of me get my head around the way the story tries to justify the events of this volume and it turns into a lot of moping that shouldn’t have happened and nothing that a five minute conversation wouldn’t fix.
Is there some good stuff? Yes, yes there is. I love the burgeoning friendship between Nanase and Asaki, who is one of Hana’s female friends. Asaki’s freewheeling nature makes her a fun counterpart to Nanase and having a male lead with an actual female friend is a nice touch (it can be done!).
Nanase’s friend Kouko gets a boyfriend this volume and the story of how is the bonus manga and it’s better than the actual main narrative this time around. A simple tale of two people who form a connection out of nowhere, it really ends this book on a far better note than it might deserve.
2.5 stars and my lingering affection for the series rounds it up, just barely. Make no mistake though, I think this is one of the dumbest manga breakups I have ever read and some of the silliest baloney drama in recent memory.
Setelah skors selesai, Hana-kun malah ngajak putus...huhu. Alasannya konyol. Dia tidak mau tergantung sama Nanase. Udah gitu Nanase iya-iya aja... padahal masih sama-sama suka.
Part 29: From Tomorrow Part 30: Right Now, It's Still Part 31: I Want to Be Involved Part 32: The Time I Loved Hana-kun *Special Short* When We're in Love (Extra) ~Kouko~
