The Thornscarp Proposal

Rate this book
Thanks to lucrative gem mines and easy trade routes, the beautiful people of Gildernosh have long believed their realm was untouchable. Ruled by the Lord Protector until his daughter Mila ascends the throne, they aren’t as protected as they once believed. Enemies are at the borders and their easy way of life is being threatened.

Mila knows what must be done to ensure the safety of her people. Unfortunately her father doesn’t agree. Against his wishes, Mila makes a dangerous decision and sets out with her closest companions- an overly flirtatious gnome and a surly sprite- to the horrifying realm of Thornscarp. In the physically stunning land filled with denizens thought descended from demons, Mila is shocked to see all manner of people with horns and claws, wings and scales. There she does the unthinkable. She offers herself in marriage to the Mighty Prince Edonier, a savage warrior who just might be as much monster as he is man.

Mila’s proposal is met with more than one challenge. Although she’s yet to set eyes on the brutal man, she must stay in the terrifying land for a month while the King and Queen of Thornscarp make a decision. Between the queen’s tests, unexpected assassination attempts, the ire of her father, and her chemistry with the beast of a guard assigned to watch over her, soon Mila isn’t sure if she’d rather sacrifice her heart or her queendom.

With elements of The Princess and the Pea deliciously mashed together with Beauty and the Beast, The Thornscarp Proposal is a whimsical and cozy fantasy romance, sure to have readers swooning and giggling with each turn of the page.

Note to readers: The Thornscarp Proposal is a full length novel based on the short story "The Princess and the Promise", previously published by the same author under the pen name Aster Rye.

Thank you to Booksirens and the author for providing an advanced digital copy.

Wow! What a cozy, cute romance. As a mashup of elements from The Princess and the Pea with Beauty and the Beast, this book has the feel of a fairytale retelling.

I loved the main princess and her two overprotective yet sweet companions. Each character had such a distinct personality, which added depth and created fun banter between them. While I did guess the twist early on, it didn’t ruin my enjoyment, but made me appreciate the story even more, knowing something the main character didn’t!

The world-building and writing fully immersed me, making this a light and lovable read. I’d recommend it and would happily read it again.

You know what time it is… so let’s get into it!

Oh my goodness, where to even start. . . well, I sat down to start it and ended up finishing it in the same sitting. It was just that enthralling!

The Thornscarp Proposal had endless nods to traditional and well loved fairytales, but made every one of them uniquely it’s own. Peas designed to detect a princesses delicate sensibilities became heart shaped stones meant to guide anyone to true love. A beastly curse became a hastily planned con.

Mina; a princess raised to be queen, a widow, and the last hope for a kingdom on the verge of war - all before the age of 30. Accompanied by her two best friends (read - sisters), Mina travels to a rival kingdom in an effort to build an alliance. How does she intend to form an alliance you ask, well, the answer is simple, through marriage.

The catch? Mina has never met the prince she proposes to marry. In fact, she doesn’t even know what he looks like. And in order to do so, she must earn the approval of the Thornscarp royal family within the month - the royal family that wants very little to do with her. Remember, Everything the queen does is a test.

Prince Edonier has may titles, ranging from dangerous beast to protective crown prince. He could be the man of her dreams, or her worst nightmare, but she’s willing to risk it for the sake of her people. The question, is will she last long enough in the kingdom of Thornscarp to do so.

Full of political intrigue, love, and fantastically funny characters, The Thornscarp Proposal by Kami King Larsen is a MUST read!

A huge huge HUGE thank you to Kami King Larsen for allowing me the opportunity of being a part of your ARC team in exchange for an honest review! I had such an amazing time reading and can’t wait to check out more of your books in the future!

[ARC Review]

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I thoroughly enjoyed my dive into Kami King Larsen's world in "The Thornscarp Proposal." It was my first foray into her writing, and I was delighted by the seamless and engaging storytelling. Accompanying Mila on her adventure to Thornscarp was a rollercoaster of emotions, starting nervously but quickly evolving into a whimsical and enchanting place that was just a joy to be immersed in.

The story's echoes of Beauty and the Beast added an intriguing layer, keeping me curious and captivated throughout as the mystery of the realm unraveled. Each character, from Mila to her friends Glow and Puddi, brought a unique spark that livened up the narrative. And Thak, was simply lovable and stole the show with his charm and allure. 🥵🙈

"The Thornscarp Proposal" is the kind of book that easily captures your heart, making you fall in love with the characters and their diverse personalities. It's a light and fun read that I'll definitely reach for when I need something comforting and enjoyable. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone seeking a delightful and engaging romantasy escapade to lose themselves in. ✨

This book is a fantastic choice for those like me who aren't usual romantasy readers but are looking to dip their toes into the genre. It serves as a refreshing Beauty and the Beast-like palette cleanser. A huge shoutout to Kami King Larsen for providing me with this ARC. **This honest review reflects my genuine appreciation for the opportunity to experience such a delightful read in exchange for the ARC**

WOW!

I’m so pleasantly surprised! I generally go for books with open door intimacy and high spice levels, and am generally disappointed when I don’t get that. However, this book didn’t need the open-door scenes. It didn’t need the spice. Honestly, it was so well written and the romance was so pleasant, I didn’t miss it at all. The plot stood up for itself, and the characters and their development made for an incredible foundation. I fell in love with Thak, with Mila, Puddi, and Glow. I was wary of characters and then slowly warmed and then fell off a cliff of adoration without notice.

I did start predicting the big twist pretty early on, at about 25-30%, but solidifying my theory didn’t make reading a hindrance like I expected. I read more furiously and at a more invested level when clues started to be more obvious, and I loved seeing how things progressed.

The moral of the story was beautiful, too, and I was so glad that it was so obvious.

I think this book has gotten me back into the swing of fantasy, after being put-off of it for over a month now. I’m so glad I picked this ARC up and was able to read it and review it.

Such a joy to read. The amazing, colorful, mysterious, and diverse world of Thornscarp was so easy to fall in love with once the layers started peeling back.

Highly recommend this read!

I really enjoyed this book!

This was the first book I’ve read from Kami and her writing was seamless and fun! Going along on Mila’s adventure to Thornscarp started out as nerve-wrecking since she believes it is a place of half-demon beasts, but it quickly turns into a whimsical and light-hearted place that is so easy to get lost in and quite enjoyable to be in! I definitely got the vibes of Beauty and the Beast and was sooo curious the entire book how all of it would come together and what was really going on in the realm that was so mysterious and secretive!

You will easily fall in love with all of the characters and their different personalities! I really enjoyed her friends Glow and Puddi as they brought a fire, spark, and humorous touch to the story! Thak is just… well, Thak. I just love, love, loved him! (do I need to say more 🥵❤️)

This was a light and comfy read compared to a lot of Fantasy books and a great palate cleanser when you just want something light and easy to read! I will definitely be picking up this book again whenever I need a comfort read and would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a fun Romantasy to get lost in!

- I LOVED this book!! It’s such a cozy, lighthearted, fantasy book. It had a lot of Princess and the Pea and Beauty and the Beast vibes going on! Mila and her friends travel to the dangerous land of Thornscarp, a land filled with people thought to be descendants of demons. People have horns, claws, wings, and scales. She offers her hand in marriage to the Mighty Prince Edonier, who she has yet to meet! So while she’s waiting for the Queens decision, she experiences a few assassination attempts, her father’s disapproval, and is falling for the guard assigned to protect her! I love the chemistry between the MMC and FMC. They have such an amazing love story! 💞The side/supporting characters Puddi being a cute, flirtatious gnome and Glow being a grumpy sprite are definitely my favorite. There is also only one spicy🌶️ scene in here so if you aren’t really a fan of spice, check out this book! I know this just a personal preference but I didn’t like how it was written in third person. I also felt like the conflict was resolved quite fast. Disclaimer: I received an advanced reader copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily and in my own words.

The beautiful and wealthy kingdom, Gildernosh, is being threatened from multiple neighboring kingdoms that want its wealth for their own. Princess Mila knows that she needs to secure an alliance to ensure the safety of her people, so she travels to the dangerous realm of Thornscarp against her father’s wishes. Thornscarp is well known for its monstrous denizens and military might. Mila proposes that she marry Thornscarp’s Prince Edonier, but the King and Queen aren’t enthusiastic. Instead she is invited to stay for one month to be tested to see if she is worthy of marrying Edonier. As nothing is as it seems and every interaction is a test, can Mila see through appearances and save her people?

The Thornscarp Proposal is a perfect delight of a fairy tale. Thornscarp is a detailed country full of multidimensional characters. Mila is a well balanced, realistic protagonist that you can’t help but root for. Themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and looking beyond appearances meld with elements of the princess and the pea and beauty and the beast create a sublime tale. A must read for fans of Robin McKinney, Kate Stradling, and Patricia C. Wrede.

"The Thornscarp Proposal" is a delightful fantasy romance that combines elements of classic fairy tales such as "The Princess and the Pea" and "Beauty and the Beast". The story follows Princess Mila as she makes a daring decision to save her queendom by offering herself in marriage to the savage warrior Prince Edonier. Set in the visually stunning realm of Thornscarp, filled with creatures thought to be descended from demons, Mila faces challenges, unexpected assassination attempts, and conflicting emotions as she navigates her way through this dangerous land.
The author expertly weaves together a tale of love, sacrifice, and adventure, keeping readers engaged and entertained throughout. The chemistry between Mila and Prince Edonier is palpable, and the supporting characters, such as the flirtatious gnome and surly sprite, add depth and humor to the story. Overall, "The Thornscarp Proposal" is a charming and whimsical read that will have readers swooning and giggling with each turn of the page.

What a beautifully written fantasy escape! Enter a cozy magical world with royalty, intrigue and Beauty & the Beast feels. You will fall in love with Mila from the very start, with the care she shows everyone around her and what she is willing to sacrifice for others.

There is a bit of a love triangle, with all the interesting tension that entails, but true love finds a way. Those moments are always my favorite and this is just one of the quotes I highlighted on my kindle:

"She kissed him back with an intensity to match his own. She kissed him as she'd never kissed another man."

Get ready to get to be carried away on a lovely romantasy escape. While this is expanded from one of the author's previous books, written under a pen name, it is a light, easy standalone read. Highly recommended, especially for fairytale lovers.

ARC REVIEW

Mila travels with her friends to the Thornscarp land, a land where the people have horns and claws and they thought to be descendants of demons, so she can meet the Queen. She offers her hand to the Mighty Prince Edonier, a man she doesn't know. As she waits the Queen's decision she falls in love with her guard.
I liked the chemistry between the MCs. Their relationship was weird in the beginning but in the end it turned to a beautiful love story. Also I liked Pudi and Glow, Mila's friends. Pudi is a real cute gnome and Glow is a grumpy sprite. They're so good friends and they protect Mila.
It has only one spicy scene and Beauty and the Beast vibes. It's a cozy story and I recommend it.

This is my first book of Kami King Larsen and it will not be my last. She really knows how to build a world and lovable characters.
If I was not just coming out of a reading slump I would have binge this book. I think this book could become a comfy read for me, and I hope that there will be more books in this world if not following Mila and Edonier, then maybe some other characters from the book.

This book is easy and a quick read. I enjoyed the story and the plot is well thought through. At times the story seemed really slow and that nothing really happened, but the rest of the book had a perfect pace. If I was not just coming out of a reading slump I would have binge this book.

I really come to adore Mila. She is a wonderful character and not there is not really anything I wanted to be done different with her.

I quickly found out who Edonier is, and normally that would really bother me, but it didn't with this book.

Disclaimer: I received an advance review copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily to share my honest opinion.

I very much enjoyed this book. It took me less than two days to finish it as I couldn’t put it down. Fantastic story of a brave princess who takes a leap of faith or a completely crazy leap and put herself in an uncomfortable situation to do what’s right for her kingdom despite the danger she faces. She stays true to herself and with the help of her companions and new friends finds out just how tough she really is.

The story feels finished but also feels like there is room for a sequel, and it definitely captivates you and makes you wish for the later.

Kami did it again. 🎉
I devoured this one in nearly one sitting.
A mash up of The Princess and the Pea with The Beauty and the Beast, this story is effortless and precious. 💝
A+ characters.
Puddi and Glow constantly made me smile.
The pacing was great.
The world is different yet cozy despite the danger Mila faces.
In short, I absolutely loved this one!
She is easily becoming one of my fav authors (I've read 3 of her books so far and ALL have been 5 star reads for me- I didn't think that was possible 😅)
I intend to read her entire backlist.

And can we talk about this cover?! 😍 just stunning 😍

Just in time for all the sweet, cozy fall vibes with a hint of spice and chimera. 😉🥰

This uses the Princess and the Pea elements perfectly, it uses the fairy tale element perfectly and thought it was a great element with Beauty and the Beast. The characters had that element overall with what I wanted in a fantasy romance novel. Kami King Larsen wrote this perfectly and I hope to read more from the author. It had that element that I was looking for in a retelling and enjoyed the romance element overall.

The Thornscarp Proposal 🖤👑🧚

Guyssss, this book had me HOOKED from the freaking start! Mila is a fierce princess willing to risk it alllll and I mean all for her people. Her journey to Thornscarp is full of political drama, beastly surprises (hello, Prince Edonier 👀🔥), and just the right amount of fairytale magic.

✨ Tropes we love:
💍 Marriage of Convenience
🧌 Grumpy x Sunshine (feat. a surly sprite & flirty gnome)
🐉 Monsters Aren’t So Monstrous
👑 Royal Politics & Tests

The chemistry, the sass, the whimsy, it’s beautiful. Think Beauty and the Beast meets The Princess and the Pea, but with sharper claws and funnier sidekicks. Mila’s courage, Edonier’s broody charm, and those swoony moments? perfection.

If you love cozy fantasy romance with humor, heart, and a sprinkle of danger, this is your next read. Trust me

This a super cute pallette cleanser book. If you just came out of a high stakes fantasy series or just finished a super dark romance and you're looking for that cozy low stakes easy read to get you out of a slump - this book is for you!

It had really fun characters and world building. In fact I hope there will be a second 🙏 🙂 so we can see where this world goes. I loved that this book didn't take it self super seriously. I mean I love my epic fantasy books but sometimes you just want to snuggle up and go on a cozy, unbothered journey with characters that are just nice 😊

First off - this book cover is absolutely stunning - I could have picked the book up soley because of the beautiful cover art….but the truth is the description captured me.

This is one of those books you casually pick up thinking you will read it leisurely over a few days or the weekend, but then you are so drawn in and captivated that you can't help but stay put and read it through to the end.

This is an amazing book - and so much fun. I loved the characters and the story!!

“The Thornscarp Proposal,” by Kami King Larsen

I absolutely adored this book! I would consider this to be on the cozy side fantasy romance and I loved it a lot more than I thought with how little action there was. The characters were so good that I was wrapped up in them and not even thinking that not much actually happened action wise. I loved how the entire marriage of convenience aspect of the book happened. 5 out of 5 stars, perfect.

-Royalty
-Fae
-Political Intrigue
-Slow burn

Thank you for the ARC, Booksirens.

ARC Reader Book Review 🤍

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

You know me… I love a good ol’ retelling & baby, this was such a whimsical read!! The characters were all lovable & the world building was 🤌🏽 Puddi & Glow really made me smile lol!! I have a love for side characters & They were just everything. And Thak? 😮‍💨 Yeah… I get it lmfao. Some of the chapter titles were just hilarious too (Troll Ta-Tas 😹). This was such a nice, light, fun, & cozy read!! (Despite those few moments ☠️) Definitely would recommend just in time for the Fall/Winter season.

I hope there’s a Book 2 😭😭😭 But I’m happy on where it left off as well 🤍

This was just the cutest, coziest fantasy read and I adored it. It felt kind of like stepping into the world of Shrek. This book is definitely for the girlies who fell in love with the Beast and never wanted him to turn into Adam. You feel me?

This story is about finding the good in the inner person and not just between our mains. I felt like this applied to so many characters of the story. The people of Thornscarp are truly misunderstood and I loved their backstory.

The romance was adorable and I’m so glad Mila found her HEA after everything that went down in her first marriage. Her friendships with Puddi and Glow were my favorite. The three of them together were hilarious. I hope there are more adventures for Mila and her love in the future! This is the perfect fantasy for a rainy fall afternoon!!

Content: some language, one vague open door

This was a fun read! It reminded me of a mix of The Princess and the Pea x Beauty and the Beast.

I loved the overall message of the story and felt connected to many of the characters. It was easy to read, the plot flowed at a perfect pace, and there was enough banter that had me laughing quite a few times!
I'm hoping there is a book 2 in the works!

Disclaimer: I received an advance review copy of this book for free, and I'm sharing my thoughts voluntarily. All opinions are my own.

I absolutely adored this book! It offers a refreshing twist on familiar fairy tale elements. The quick pace and sharp wit of the characters kept me engaged from start to finish.

The banter between Mila and Thak was a highlight for me; their chemistry and quick-witted exchanges added depth and charm to the story. Supporting characters like Glow and Puddi were delightful additions, enhancing the overall dynamic of the narrative.

While I felt the resolution was somewhat rushed towards the end, the journey leading up to it was fantastic. The character development was well-executed, making their growth and relationships feel authentic and satisfying.

Overall, this is a delightful read for anyone who enjoys fairy tale-inspired stories with engaging characters and a touch of humor.

Would you take it upon yourself to look past the appearance?

A lot of people tend to judge things by rumors, by their covers (hello, fellow book readers), by their appearance, and other more dumb bases of things. But of course, that isn’t good. That’s awfully close-minded and is cause to why people don’t progress beyond the safety of their comforts.

This is a cozy fantasy read. Light hearted world building with elements taken from the Princess and the Pea fairy tale as well as Beauty and the Beast. It’s very easy to absorb and binge, while also dealing with tastefully dealt somewhat heavy topics.

It’s also mainly a solo POV book, but close to the end, turns into a multiple POV book, with no clear distinction as to who’s POV it is until the first few lines.

The plot is very straightforward, in taking the time to set up the world as well as giving us clear motives for the decisions made. A marriage of convenience, an alliance that would be made for the betterment of two kingdoms. Hidden tests to be passed. All very interesting, and I’m hoping for a sequel to deal with the aftermath!

Mila is the heir to the throne of her kingdom, essentially a queen-dom. She’s strong and most definitely kindhearted. She’s human but doesn’t let prejudice influence her actions. She’s been broken and how she sees herself is very low. But that doesn’t stop her from trying to ensure the safety of her people.

Her love interest, for spoiler-free’s sake. He’s definitely very loyal, he’s blessed with a good family who definitely cares more than appearance and more of each other’s happiness.

We get a somewhat slow burn with a wonderfully written progression from strangers to lovers. The romance is precious and wholesome, each aiming to prove to the other there’s more than enough to love about themselves. There’s one intimate spicy scene that isn’t fade-to-black but isn’t explicit.

An amazing book overall! If it’s part of a series, then I’d love to read the next- it’s left with so much potential for the world. But otherwise, a very enjoyable cozy read!

Thoroughly enchanted!

“I don’t give a—” She turned to Glow. “How do you say it? Troll ta-tas? Yes. I don’t give a troll’s ta-tas about your standards, and neither does the throne I will one day sit upon.”

Listen. I loved troll ta-tas since the opening of the book when they made me laugh out loud and having it come full circle to this AMAZING moment... YES, PLEASE AND THANK YOU.

This was a fun, cozy, sometimes laugh-out-loud and very loveable read and just what I needed. Inspired by a couple of fairytales, this was wonderfully weaved into a fairytale of its own. It hit all the right buttons. Yes we may know the story but we will fall in love with these characters.

Mila is a force to be reckoned with - a bright and strong heroine that does not back down, that may have to learn to stand up for herself in some things, but absolutely stands up for her people and her friends and you completely understand her and you root for her. Thak is a gentle beast and I mean that in the best way - the way he behaves with Mila just had me melting in couple of scenes.

I also loved Puddi and Glow and even sly Gregor who I initially did despise but after one scene I got him, and think how it would be interesting to read about his own love story, that man would probably wreak some havoc and then wreck himself in his own story, I'm almost sure of it.

And I loved the world these characters inhabited. There were parts that had me cheering outloud, there were parts where I was yelling at Mila to just GET IT, and it... all just made me feel good by the end of the book. What more could I ask for.

Thank you Ms. King Larsen. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you to Booksirens and the author.

Happy belated release day (the 1st! I'm not too late!) To this beauty by a personal friend of mine @authorkamikinglarsen

This book was kind of an easter egg/ spin off of one of her other books which was really fun! And if made me smile reading this book because when I got to eat brunch with Kami in person she swore to me she could never write anything "smutty" for fear her teenage daughters would read it 🤣 this is far from "smutty" but there's still some positively scandalous things I rather enjoyed reading in this book!!

These characters were so lovely! I adored getting to be apart of their world. I really enjoyed the story line and how it all buttoned up at the end! And the art work that came with it is stunning 😍

You must read this book! It's fantastic! Head over to her etsy store (in @authorkamikinglarsen Bio) @lilyfernbooks to get yourself a copy! Also available on kindle unlimited!! Thank you so much Kami for sending me a copy to review! I loved it so much! Your books just keep getting better and better 🫶

I received this book as an ARC, in exchange for an honest review.

The Thornscarp Proposal is a light, whimsical fantasy with fairy tale vibes. I found the premise and world building to be a nice change from the overdone jilted-princess-becomes-vengeful-assassin trope. Along with that, Mila was a refreshingly intelligent FMC and Thak was such an endearing MMC—horns and all.
While this is a light, cozy fantasy there is some spice and crude dialogue. I read cozy and spice, but I could not reconcile the combination of both in the same book. The transitions felt jarring and I could never settle back in to the flow of the story. That said, for some readers this is going to be the perfect combo. Happy reading!
