This is one of the most complex books I have read in a long time. There is so much scientific explanation going on about how the Starship Arcadia works and what is happening to the crew that it’s very hard to read. Also, there are at least two story-lines going on and they don’t come together until the very end. I will have to admit that I read book 1 way back in July 2024 so I was kind of fuzzy on what had happen. Apparently, I missed a lot at the end of that book or just can’t remember much of what happened. Captain Scott Moore was the captain of the Earth ship USS Atlanta until it was destroyed. They managed to get the craft down and the crew abandoned ship on the planet Kahwin. The USS Atlanta was the first FTL ship or it was supposed to be. They didn’t even know if the FTL engines would work as designed so their first trip was something of a shake-down cruise.

Well, the FTL engine did work only they meet some immediately hostile aliens that knocked the ship out of FTL into a region of space near the planet Kahwin. Since the destruction of the Atlanta, Captain Scott Moore and some of his original crew have been looking for another ship. This new ship was an alien ship of immense capabilities such that most of the inhabitants of Kahwin thought it was just a fantasy. But, Captain Moore had information leading him to believe the alien ship was buried somewhere near the North Pole on Kahwin. So he set out on an expedition to find that ship.

The journey was not easy and we find that several members of his exploration party have died due to the terrible cold and miserable conditions. They are now close to running out of supplies, have encountered unexpected difficulties with all the ice and snow and are just about to the point of turning around. Yet Captain Moore won’t quit. He’s convinced that the ship exists and that it is somewhere near their current location. That’s when a gigantic upheaval knocks those remaining of the expedition off their feet. Something has risen from deep under ground and that something appears to be a huge, impossibly huge spaceship that now hangs several hundred feet in the air. Now their problem is how do they get into that ship when it’s so far above them.

Well, the ship seems to be responding to Captain Moore and once he mentally considers their situation and that getting on the ship is the only way they are to survive, the ship settles to the ground with an open door allowing them to board. Now Captain Moore’s crew isn’t large and has gotten smaller on this expedition. He has the basic bridge crew that he’s used for years on the Atlanta so they all know their way around a starship, but this ship is huge. It dwarfs anything he or any human has ever seen and could be crewed by thousand and thousands of people. It is a self sustaining ship in that it can manufacture everything it needs including foods, spare parts and other items. Yet, Captain Moore realizes that he doesn’t have the necessary numbers of people to properly man this huge starship.

Still, they meet with two entities, Gisele, a woman Captain Moore had known back in Paris on Earth, and a man name Michael. Neither should have been here, especially Gisele. Michael spoke for the starship although he wouldn’t admit to such. Gisele didn’t actually know why she was here and didn’t know much about Earth other than Scott and her had had a relationship. She gave Captain Moore a tour of the ship, well as much of it as she and he could stand. There are several areas of the ship that have been shut off for unknown years since no crew was aboard. Yet, every member of Captain Moore’s current crew had enough room for each to have their own state room. So, now he’s going to find out if he can get this ship back to Earth.

Meanwhile, since Captain Moore left the capital of the planet Kahwin, Zoe, an artificial being, has taken to training a young man name Kol Washington. She is going to train him in all sorts of warfare and combat. He’s nothing special as far as a physical man, but he has some latent mental abilities that will prove very useful in the future. How his story fits into the rest of the book eventually gets told but not until the end.

Any, the new/old alien ship is renamed the Arcadia and Michael tells Captain Moore that he, Moore is in fact the Captain of the Arcadia, but that it must go to a place called Eos for repairs and re-outfitting. They may also more crew to man the ship at this location. So off they go. Here’s where you get deluged with all the technicalities of how this ship operates. Some of it is just overwhelming and I’m not sure why they go into such details.

I’m not certain that I will read the next book in this series. I have better books to read on my list. But for those still interested, book 3, “Jump Trap”, is available on Amazon now.

Epic space trip finds working spaceship to return to Earth but mankind's roots interfere - 4 stars

Philosophy (freedom v war) and action are both incorporated in Starship Arcadia book 2. The reader gets a heads up about the environment with each chapter heading; the focus changes quickly. You should read book 1 first as book 2 takes off from it. In book 1, Captain Scott Moore crashed Atlanta after his ship was attacked and the engines failed. In book 2, he finds a massive spaceship (Arcadia) after searching for something large and under the surface of the planet Kahwan. Traipsing in arctic conditions; Captain Moore's crew locates a promising buried object which turns out to be the expected spaceship, the Arcadia.

On Arcadia, a man called Michael conducts a cursory tour of the just found spaceship. A subway line was part of the design because the spaceship is so large that it takes hours to traverse. Arcadia has the energy resources to jump across the galaxy. Unexpectedly, Arcadia seems to have a carbon copy of the original Atlanta craft quarters, control stations and crew quarters. Arcadia, not having been used for hundreds of years, needs a major refit. The crew is told that the first trip will be to get upgrades and repairs, Enroute to the repair facility, Captain Moore successfully fights off a large Shaper force in deep space. Although victorious, Arcadia needs even more repairs after the battle. When Arcadia gets within a few hours of the repair station, even more damage occurs.

Meanwhile, back on the planet Kahwin, a new character, Kol Washington is selected to undergo extensive military training. After boot camp, Kol is kidnapped by a woman named Zoe. Kol and Zoe escape to an underground facility for even more training where Kol is the only student and Zoe is the trainer. Zoe explains the planet's history and teaches active mind control techniques. Kol learns how to use both ancient weapons and highly advanced technological weapons.

Much attention is paid to similarities between (Earth's) Greek history including the 12 major Greek gods. Because the inhabitants of Kahwin seem to be human with nearly identical DNA as the people from earth. The parallel development of man, mankind's thirst for war and domination is another topic of discussion. Kahwan has many artifacts that seem to match the Greek civilization. Is there a connection?

Just as Kol's training is complete, Shaper attacks on Kahwin are found to be mere hours away. An emergency signal is sent to Arcadia which becomes involved in a deep space battle with the Shapers. There is an overarching concern that the Shapers will soon attack earth.

This is a large story with rewarding insights. Some of the explanations are fantastical (including reviving dead people to life). One difficult to reconcile feature is that the people on Kahwin are opposed to robotic technology want to end all life forms that are not naturally occurring -- except that artificial soldiers (robot-like beings and enhanced mechanical fighters) are needed for battle.

Farthest Reaches offers gripping excitement and interesting philosophy discussions. I am ready for the next adventure in this space opera

Very enjoyable read.
Finding the missing flagship was more like the flagship finding them. Especially with Captain Moore badly hurt and in peril of dying. From there, there is non stop action and intrigue on many different levels.

I like how the main characters are always saving themselves and the crew in the nick of time. The many plot lines continue proliferate but the main one that is guiding them all hasn’t even been raised or revealed yet. And I believe it stretches all the way back to earth.

The AI Melody interfaces with the Antediluvian tech too easily when everything else takes time and effort, and how Melody turns off in a crisis or does something the opposite of what she’s asked to do. Very Interesting.

The technical and science description’s all seem plausible and add greatly to the whole story arc as a means to make technology thousands old, and still able to work. Great concepts and well written about.

The many agenda’s in play make this a great space opera.

Great Series. Can’t wait for more.

Kahwin may have been a victory over the Shapers, but the war has not been won. For that Captain Scott Moore needs a new starship and a long hidden one on Kahwin may prove to be just the answer. How to find it though?
Elsewhere a young man Lol Washington finds himself on the cusp of a new career in the military, assisted by the mysterious Zoe.
But others are also expressing interest in this young man. For what reason?
And is the Regency truly something of the past on Kahwin?
Starship Arcadia is quite the tome in which many and often high tech questions seem to require urgent answers, only to be done so in an explosion of danger and frantic action subsequently, culminating in a pulsing cliff hanger in the end. I am looking forward to the third book in this series.
Phew!
Enjoy

Good read but...

This book series is a good read. However, there were times it couldn't keep me in the story. Some parts, such as with, Kol, felt too long. It was stated he was the answer to was the problem. I wont go into so not to ruin it. It just felt like it was dragging.

Some of the characters are awesome. They were well developed.

This was one of a very few books, I skipped chapters to get to the battle. I will read the next book to read what happens.

Everyone's taste in reading is not the same. I would definitely encourage one to read the series.

The second book in this series continues the very imaginative storyline introduced in book 1 as Captain Scott and his crew continue to try to unravel all the mysteries of the Kahwin system and identify who are allies and who are enemies. The descriptions of the people, planets and technology they encounter are very imaginative and inventive and the storyline full of twists and turns as the action steadily ramps up throughout the book. I look forward to book 3.

Excellent

But I had to scan through the last battle scenes... I've read so many battle scenes where the good guys finally win and it just gets boring... This book was great up until the author lost his will to continue intelligently and had to resort to disgusting blood and guts... Oh well... I'll still buy the last of the series and hope he continues intelligently.

Tension throughout......m

The fast paced action kept me hooked, and unwilling to take a break. Sweat on the brow as I was carried along the storyline to the point of being left hanging to await the next book.
