I absolutely love this book! As one born and raised in Japan I can’t help but imagine I have somewhat of an advantage over the average reader, but Percival Lowell’s wit and description of his journey to the Noto peninsula of Japan are a picture of the intellect of the man who was Percival Lowell. His insight into humanity and human nature through the lens of the culture and generation that he lived in are fascinating to say the least. Mix that with Japanese landmarks and culture, much of which is unchanged from when Lowell’s journey took place, and it an incredibly enjoyable experience.

One caveat, Lowell uses some difficult words, so get your dictionary ready. This IS NOT a light read. It is a book that will give you an education in both writing and deeper thinking. If you want a shallow and light read, this isn’t it.

Percival Lowell may have been a good astronomer, but as a travel writer he falls flat.
