Gentlemen of the Emerald City #4

Marco: Les Gentlemen de Seattle, tome 4

Rate this book
Julian

L.A. Witt and her husband have been exiled from Spain and sent to live in Maine because rhymes are fun. She now divides her time between writing, assuring people she is aware that Maine is cold, wondering where to put her next tattoo, and trying to reason with a surly Maine coon. Rumor has it her arch nemesis, Lauren Gallagher, is also somewhere in the wilds of New England, which is why L.A. is also spending a portion of her time training a team of spec ops lobsters.

Authors Ann Gallagher and Lori A. Witt have been asked to assist in lobster training, but they "have books to write" and "need to focus on our careers" and "don't you think this rivalry has gotten a little out of hand?" They're probably just helping Lauren raise her army of squirrels trained to ride moose into battle.

I have really enjoyed this series...but then L. A. Witt is one of my favorite authors, and her creations of unique situations always makes for very interesting reading. Her characters also have very little trouble finding their happy ever after. Marco is just a guy trying to make a living, although I have to admit that he has a relatively unique occupation. When moments of slumps show up, he is willing to take a chance on an “extended booking” with Julian. Now there's Julian, almost half the book is about his getting over a previous relationship and about starting a new one. L A Witt has a talent of balancing reality and romance, leaving the reader looking forward to and waiting for the possibility of what might develop between Marco and Julian to start to take shape. The connection is realist and never feels forced. Meeting Marco and Julian was a fun read. From the first time we saw Marco and his friend Andre discover one another on the cruise ship to Hawaii and found that they had both been hired to pretend to be the fiancé and boyfriend of Julian and his ex, we knew that sparks were going to fly, and this had no chance of ending well unless some truth was forthcoming soon. I hated Julians' ex and hoped that a giant shark would maybe have him for lunch, but I'm sure the poor shark would get a bad case of indigestion. L. A, Witt dissent let me down, but things were close.

At 85% the MC still has trouble choosing between his ex and Marco. At 95% he says to Marco that he's not over his ex, though he wants to start a relationship with him. All through the book it's Tony this and Tony that.
This is not my kind of escapism romance. I didn't like it. 😕

Annnnnd the book slump continues..

DNF @67%. Became really tedious for me how much Julian was still thinking and talking about his ex. Even comparing what Tony and Marco were like in bed. The ex is taking up so much of this book I can't summon the motivation to keep reading.

There's nothing discussed about Julian's previous relationship that explains why he can't seem to get over Tony.

Tony is also on the cruise with his new fiance and I dread to think how cringe inducing the scene will be when everything comes to light (won't give any spoilers re: that).

Maybe I misunderstood the blurb, I was expecting Marco and Julian to fall in love but if at 67% one MC is still not over their ex and it's pretty much all they talk about and think about, I can't see how a "romance" between the 2 MCs is going to feel believable by the end of the book.

Disappointing and tedious ( I don't give a fuck about Tony!!😡 😒😴)

I think I'm over the amount of showers. Maybe. I don't think there were that many in this book anyway. Or maybe I was just too angry about the whole thing. Should have just DNF. I get that there are all types of relationships but finishing a book with one of the MCs still kind of thinking about his ex is a no no for me. It did not feel like a HEA at all. Marco deserved so much better.

This series of books may share a common theme, but I have been thoroughly enjoying the very different vibe from each story. In terms of character, I always enjoy meeting a future hero from a different perspective and then getting a peek into their own head. Here, Marco is just a guy making a living. He has a relatively unique occupation, but there’s nothing otherwise extraordinary about it. There are moments of unfortunate slump like with any career, so he is willing to take a chance on an “extended booking” with Julian.

Julian is his own sort of dichotomy, and half this book is just as much about getting over a previous relationship as it is about starting a new one. In fact, after three books of happily ever afters, a solid happily for now should be a let-down. Instead, Witt does an excellent job of balancing reality and romance, leaving me thrilled by the possibility of what might develop between Marco and Julian without forcing an unrealistic connection (even for a romance novel).

Witt also sets up a particular twist early on in the book that doesn’t hang over the heroes like a storm cloud so much as it develops delightful anticipation for which character might break first. Again, the aftermath is the perfect amount of romance for the bond that has developed between Marco and Julian. More than any of the previous pairings in this series, I hope that I get a glimpse of these two in future books to learn how their story continues to evolve.

I don't know why this book wasn't named "Tony", because the stupid ex was named on every page and took up the emotional space of it's entirety. But that blurb wouldn't sell: "Tony is the ex that Julian can't get over, so he hires an escort. Nothing is ever explained about the hold Tony has on Julian. Nothing is ever explained about Julian's job (we never ever not once find out what he does for a living, even while he's working remotely, and it's the crux of arguments with said Tony. It's fucking weird and eventually infuriating) or day to day life. Julian cannot get over being with an ex who's a narcissist, who's assholeness is all encompassing for everyone. There will also be earnest soliloquies about relationships ad nauseum (both internal and external) and a mind numbing rehashing of every convo he and Marco had the entire trip. Enjoy! A wishy washy HEA is provided."

Huh. Guess that wouldn't sell. I bought it because it was named "Marco", so I am the idiot. #justiceforMarco

3.5/5. I enjoyed this book and it kept me entertained, but I think i struggled to see past Julian's first impression. Overall I did like Julian, especially when we were in his POV. He is kind and caring. He's organized and helpful. He's just really insecure about a lot of things, thanks to his ex, and really focused on his ex without really knowing what his end goal is. I liked Marco a lot. He's calm and straight forward. He's selfless and kind. He hurt himself just to help Julian save face. And he's understanding. He immediately sees Julian being rude to him and sees it as a defense mechanism. I did enjoy the forced proximity with each other and the ex. The wedding festivities were fun and I liked the cruise setting. It was nice to see Julian's walls come down. Overall, I really enjoyed this story and I love this series.

Notes: 2/5 spice levels, sex work, escort/client, fake dating, revenge plan, forced proximity

Oh this series is just wonderful and Marco's story is just fantastic. Marco gets hired for an extended booking by Julian who is just wanting to make his ex jealous or to get back with the ex he just can't decide. A two week cruise for Julian's best friends wedding with the ex what could go wrong or right.
I love Marco who is the calming affect Julian needs with the stress of the ex. Julian took me a bit to warm up to but then I was rooting for him to dump the ex and as Marco put it stop letting him live rent free in your head.
The story line was fantastic. I loved hearing about the cruise and snorkeling. I also enjoyed the side characters and seeing a glimpse of the old characters from previous books.

A fantastic series and this book is no exception.

4.5 stars rounded up.

Written in dual first person POV. Good amount of M/M sexy times. While Julien starts off unlikable, his attitude quickly improves. Marco is great from the start. Can be read as a standalone but it’s better if you’ve read the other books in the series. One of my pet peeves is in this book - time zones. I don’t know why authors have such a hard time determining which city is “ahead”.

Confidence

Julian was going to be the best man in his friends wedding. He was happy about that until he found out his ex was going to be the other best man. His ex was also bringing his fiance to the wedding. Julian had to find someone, so he hired Marco. Their first meeting Marco thought Julian was an up tight jerk, but after spending time with him, he learned that Julian lacked confidence in himself. I enjoyed their journey.

This is a marvelous story, I've always loved fake boyfriends as well as male escort for hire, so yummy! Marco is the perfect client as Julian desperately needs all the help he can get to face his already engaged ex at a friend's wedding. Let the fun, sex, tension, and glares roll, this is one fabulous story.

OMG absolutely. Awesome

I believe this may be my favorite in the series - oh what em I saying they are all my favorites!!! Bit this one is different at least for me - two men just broke up & are both best men for their best friends wedding - both hire escorts as boyfriends to get the ex jealous!!!! I love it but love wins for the goods guys
Thank you - Lori

Marco and Julian's story is my favorite of the bunch so far. The fact the Tony (the ex) was brought up a lot didn't bother me. It didn't seem to bother Marco either, Marco knew why he was there. Marco and Julian had great chemistry and the sex was steamier in this book than the earlier books in the series.

This is a great series and I really enjoyed this book in particular. Lots of sassy dialogue and some sharp witted characters makes for a fun book. The narration by Michael Ferraiuolo is outstanding as usual.

Julian hires an escort so he does not have to attend a wedding&cruise alone where his ex is showing off his new fiance.
The setup could be fun, but Julian is just pinning for pages in inner dialog for his ex, again and again and again. PAGES! *shudder*

Julian is trying to get over an abusive ex, and Marco is the perfect man for the job. Unfortunately Tony doesn't want to let Julian go. Julian learns that he's worthy of love. The book also introduces the next man to be featured. As always, the author highlights well known areas in Washington.

Well Done

The ending was anticipated, but Ms. Witt is adept at making the reader wonder if the MCs will actually get there. Good character development, and solid supporting cast help support the storyline, even the fumbled details for the cruise were tolerable.

Interesting characters and premise, but I didn't connect with this one as much as I did with the other ones I've read in the series. Part of the story line, in fact, started to annoy me after a bit.
