Sentimental childhood narrative, unengaging realism from a usually unpredictable author.

kinda trippy reading a steve katz book w/o any formal experimentation, huh? admittedly i searched throughout for some vestige of that in vain, & in terms of plot this doesn't go far beyond "here's some stuff that happened to me and my friends," but it's as closely observed & vivid an account of growing up in the ~*~lost new york~*~ of egg creams etc. as anything this side of teitlebaum's window, so i can't say i was too mad
