Cursed Legacies #3

Twisted Soul

Rate this book
The secret is out: I’m the prophesied scourge, and according to the Legacy Council, my quintet and I must be hunted down and destroyed immediately.

With the size of the bounty they’ve put on our heads, there’s no telling who we can trust. Going on the run feels cowardly, but it’s necessary. We need time to regroup so I can move on to the next step of my plan to free the humans trapped in the Nether.

We also have to figure out how I’m being mysteriously bound to each of my matches. It should be impossible, yet the more we bond against all odds, the more powerful I feel.

Getting closer to them feels so good. No matter what my inevitable fate holds, they make it worth it.

But all this newfound power from bonding is doing something to the shadow heart in my chest—strengthening my link to the Entity and putting my quintet in even more danger.

And not the fun kind.

Amid this two-way game of cat and mouse with immortal monsters and navigating the intricacies of bonding with my quintet, an unexpected secret is emerging from the dark shadows of my past. Something I wasn’t prepared for.

It seems the gods have been playing games.
Fine. Game on.

Intended for 18+ readers due to very strong language, graphic violence, dark themes, and explicit sex scenes, including group sex (no M/M). Please read the updated TW. Book 3 of 4. This book will end in a cliffhanger. No AI content here.

I get a little nervous when a series has a setting change as the previous is always hard to live up to, but I didn’t despise the differences in this sequel! I unfortunately didn’t have that compulsive urge to pick this up at every single waking moment like I did with Shadow Heart, but I’m still having such a blast following along Maven and her quintet’s journey! Besides, that ending ABSOLUTELY pulled everything back together because what even WAS that?!

We're both panting. Her hands smooth over my back as I try to come back to myself, and when I can't stop kissing her, she tries to block my lips.

"Let me catch my breath.”

“Let me be your breath,” I counter, capturing her lips again.

As an avid–addicted–reverse harem reader, I find myself reading many debut series and self-published books. I can say with confidence that Morgan B Lee’s Cursed Legacies series is one of the greats in the genre.

Twisted Soul was a fantastic addition to what we’ve come to expect from this author: intrigue, humor–so much humor–, action, and a bit of spice.

Something that I struggle to find in reverse harems are believable harem dynamics. Paranormal/fantasy series do have an edge above books published in the contemporary genre because they have magic systems that normalize polyamory (e.g. keepers and mates), but I do not feel that Morgan used this fantastical explanation as a crutch. By making Maven take on the experienced/dominant character archetype, she steps into the role as the leader of the group, where having multiple men fawn over her and supporting said partners makes sense.

Honestly, while it’s not marketed as comedy, this is the funniest book I’ve read all year. From Maven’s deadpan humor to Baelfire’s silly questions (not to mention the group’s antics), there are a plethora of passages I highlighted that just made me laugh. Reading this book, I felt like a schoolgirl: kicking my feet and laughing into my chest. Morgan is quickly becoming an author I look up to for creating such realistic dialogue, so much so that I was poking around her Facebook trying to find hints of her inspiration behind these interactions.

The banter between the group as friends continued over into chemistry and tension as lovers. I tend not to feel the love as strongly as other readers, and sex scenes, while fun, don’t often have an impact on me.

The relationship filled my chest with butterflies:
“Anything you ask for, darling, I will become for you. If you want a weapon, use me. If you need air, breathe me. I will shield you from the pain in your past. All I ask in return is that you fucking tell me when these memories are haunting you.”

I close my eyes, focusing on his heartbeat against my chest.

I’ve memorized all of their heartbeats. Four unique, steady lullabies I can’t get enough of.

“You can’t protect me from memories, Crypt.”

He nips my ear. “No? Watch me..

And the dirty talk sent the butterflies somewhere lower:
Because now, I want to relish Maven’s body until she’s so overwhelmed with pleasure that she prays for me to stop. I want to spend every second inside this perfect pussy—fuck her raw on an altar and revere her the way she deserves. The others can watch until it's their turn. Maven enjoys us all worshipping her—and gods on high, I enjoy seeing her worshipped.

─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───

I’d rate this book a strong 4 stars. Why not 5? I did struggle in places with the pacing, but that shouldn’t deter you from the fact that this was a wonderful book (see above).

Thank you Morgan B Lee, my future wife, for an Advanced Reader’s Copy. All opinions are my own.

“I don't want you under control, Maven. No version of you or your emotions will burden me.”

Silas motherfuckin Crane, everybody. Love that guy.

Girl if someone said "I want you unhinged. I can handle it" to me I would CRUMBLE

That ending? THAT ENDING ??? If I could kiss the last two chapters of this book I would. What a BRUTAL cliffhanger, I freaking LOVED it.

The reveal?! The vulnerability?! The PAIN AND AGONY?! Morgan B Lee FED me

This book had EVERYTHING.

I loved how full of action it was because a character like Maven NEEDED all the action she could get and I was glad that we could see so much of her badassery in this. AND!! We got to see more of the guys getting mesmerized (and terrified) by seeing Maven in action.

Maven:

The guys:

Can't blame them tho LIVE LOVE LAUGH MAVEN.

While waiting for this book to be out I searched high and low for other characters like Maven to fill the void. And many tried to sell these other characters as badass, take-no-shit heroines but none of them really worked.

Maven had the perfect combination of everything. She was a pretty balanced, unbalanced character.

She was really guarded, unfeeling, and could come across as rude. But she also loved hard once she let herself feel it & would do anything to protect those she cared about & also the weak.

I think what I loved the most about this is how the people around her, not only the guys but her other friends like Kenzie, Lillian and Felix, loved her hard even with all of these traits that other people would probably flee from.

Seeing someone who thinks of themself as unloveable, being loved hard and loud by people who would burn the entire world for them is my favorite.

Also I loved that I think all the guys had equal screen time!!!

We got to see more of Everett and honestly man he DELIVERED. That man PROTECCCCC and we love that for him 💅🏼 The ice prince being the warmest inside is actually kinda cute ain't gonna lie. I know Baelfire is supposed to be the golden retriever one but he's still an aggressive dude. EVERETT IS JUST A CUTIE PIE (✿◡‿◡) an extremely rich cutie pie

ALSO LONG LIVE BAELFIRE. The whole thing with his family was one of my favorite parts of the book.

Tho I gotta be honest Silas and Crypt stole the show for me most of the time (✿◡‿◡) I COULDN'T HELP IT they had the sweetest mouths those motherfuckers

“The gods hold no power over me anymore. Only you do.”

Sometimes babygirl is a grown ass man named Crypt DeLune. I think he would spend the rest of his life on his knees for her if she asked. Thay all would. ROMANCE IS SO BACK YALL (✿◡‿◡)

Also of course I HAVE to mention the GREATEST thing about this book: the banter between the guys.

“What the hell is wrong with you?”
“How much time do you have?”

"Personally, I think it's because of something called gohf."
"Gohf?"
"Yes. As in, gohfuck yourself, you loose-lipped lizard."

I mean sure there were a couple of things I wish were different. I think I would prefer Maven to not feel possessive of the guys at least until the end (the L scene if you know what I mean)

Imagine her still being so nonchalant about them and then finally dropping "it" in her most vulnerable moment?! I think I would cry even harder

But the next book is the last so I understand that she's gotta give in sometime soon, might as well be in this book.

I also kinda wish there was... less smut.

Some of them were just told in passing (and it seemed like Maven was having a lot of it) and I think I would like it better if in this book every sexual scene was explained in detail, no matter how small, especially considering Maven's phobia of touch instead of just glossing over it.

But I still had a great time and it was the first book to grab all of my attention this last few weeks. It saw me in the trenches fighting for my life against the slump and was like NOT ON MY WATCH !!!!

Gonna be miserable until the next book comes out. I WOULD GIVE ANYONE ALL MY LOVE IF THEY GAVE ME AN ARC RIGHT NOW 😭😭😭😭

reading this again with context was honestly life-changing. turns out knowing what happened in the last two books makes this one way less confusing. who knew. still don’t understand the entity fully and don’t care to. still obsessed with the quintet. still not normal about crypt and silas.

this reread also made me realize how far they’ve come. maven’s actually letting them in. the guys are still disasters but they’re her disasters now. the bonding is bonding. the plot is plotting. i fear i’m too invested.

── ⟢ ・⸝⸝

jumping into this without a recap was chaotic (totally on me), but this was insane. this book just ramps everything up—maven’s on the run with her quintet, dodging the legacy council’s bounty, and somehow finding herself even more connected to them with this binding magic that no one understands. every twist kept me hooked, and i loved every second.

the world-building in this series just keeps getting better. this book goes deeper into the nether, the immortal realms, all the political stuff, the prophecies, and now the gods are literally playing games with people’s lives. the stakes keep climbing and everything feels messier in the best way. it makes you question who to trust and what’s even real.

the characters… i can’t get over them. they’re actually starting to function as a group and it’s so good. the guys are still a mess, but now they’re a mess together and it works. crypt and silas? still my favorites. even everett surprised me—he’s come a long way since book one. and maven’s still killing it—literally and figuratively. she’s handling so much, but still being a badass about it.

the emotional stuff hits harder here. maven’s bond with each of them is more intense now, and you can really feel how much they mean to her (and to each other), even when they’re driving each other crazy. the binding magic adds a whole new level, and it just makes everything feel more personal and high-stakes.

the humor in this series just works. they’re facing impossible odds, but they keep it light, and i swear i was laughing as much as i was stressed. the plot felt a little more laid back this time, almost like it gave them (and me) some breathing room. it’s not that nothing was happening—believe me, the action is there—but those quieter moments really stood out and made things feel way more grounded and emotional.

and that ending… absolutely wrecked me. i knew a cliffhanger was coming, but not that. finding out maven’s mom is literally death? meeting the gods? this book builds everything up so well, and now i’m somehow both ready and not ready at all for the last one.

I’m a little torn on this one! I still really enjoyed it, but I feel like we maybe could have wrapped everything up in this book.
I was to take a break and read something else before starting the last book in the series. HOWEVER, I’m a victim of the nastiest cliffhanger and will be forced to immediately start book 4!!

OH MY GOSH!! I have been waiting for this book and it did not disappoint😍😍

I love this series so much and I cannot wait for the next and final book! The cliffhanger in this was crazy! While the other books had lots of action and plot, this one is filled with even more baddie action, plot, bl00dy fights and sizzling romance!❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 I love reverse harem in fantasy, but I’m also SUPER picky about them and this is one of the few I absolutely looove!!😍😍

Maven is such a strong FMC and she is the definition of a badass (with a great ass, I’m sure her quintet would add😉). While she doesn’t have a ‘heart’, she definitely has something beautiful there with all the bravery and determination to help and care for those around her!

I love the boys! I don’t even know how to pick a favorite, because it changes every time one of them opens their mouth or we get to their POV🤭 Don’t tell them, but they are the cutest and sweetest matches🫶🏼

You want fantasy and romance and a strong af FMC with lovable male love interests, look no further!✋🏼

Thank you so much for the opportunity to be an eARC reader, Morgan!! The review is my 💯 honest opinion 💜

Ok I am now thoroughly invested in this series and am irritated I have to wait until April to read the final book.

What’s interesting about this series for me is that I can’t say I love any of the characters but I’m very into the story itself. For most of the books I love, it’s the characters I’m super into. It’s like I’m going along with them on their journey and I’m invested in the outcome of the story for their sake. With this book, I feel like I’m more invested in the events and not necessarily who the events are happening to. I don’t know if that makes sense to anyone else but me. Don’t get me wrong, I like Maven (finally remember her name lol), I like her quintet, but I don’t love anyone. Like normally I have a favorite in a RH, but I don’t have strong feelings for anyone. Crypt is the most entertaining, but other than that, they’re all just fine.

I really like the story and I’m so glad the writing is better. I like urban fantasy - it’s interesting to see how authors weave magic into a world we already know. The divide, the nether, Maven’s origins - its all definitely keeping my attention. Sometimes series go on for too long - like the author wasn’t sure how or when to wrap this up, or decided to extend it cause it’s popular, but this feels planned out and purposeful. It feels like we are going to wrap this up nicely, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it ends!

Fact 1: I finished the first two books in two days, and couldn’t be more excited to read them.

Fact 2: it took me FOURTEEN days to read this. 14. Days. To. Read. Like 300 pages.

It is literally all the horrible parts about the first half of the seventh Harry Potter book and none of the redeeming factors. Found myself rolling my eyes repeatedly and honestly still at a loss of words because of the ending. For a world that I absolutely was 100% bought in to and would argue the first book is one of my top reads of 2024, I am fucking pissed that this book was NOT strong.

3 stars because I can’t bear to give it lower.

Twisted Soul turned the drama up a notch, and I was here for it. Maven is still her prickly, self-sacrificing self, but the way her bonds with Silas, Everett, Baelfire, and Crypt deepen made the story hit harder. Each guy had his moment—Silas’s devotion, Everett’s steadiness, Baelfire’s fire-and-vulnerability mix, and Crypt’s intense obsession—and that messy mix of dynamics kept me hooked.
The book leans darker, with more rebellion, blood, and shadow-magic, but also those little tender moments that remind you why this reverse harem works. Maven’s inner “I’m a monster” loop did repeat a bit, and some fight scenes were confusing, but the tension, banter, and that brutal cliffhanger made it all worth it. Definitely one of the stronger entries in the series.

5 ⭐️ Never Falters!

This series just keeps getting better. Twisted Soul picks up right where the second book left off, and the pacing is chef’s kiss perfect. The story stays super intriguing … Maven and her four men have me absolutely hooked. I loved watching their relationship deepen; Maven deserves all the love, and her guys never let her down (even that absolute menace, Frost). One by one they break through her heavily guarded heart, and I’m a sucker for stories like this, where the bonds just keep getting stronger.

That cliffhanger though?! Sheesh. I need the next book yesterday.

I am so glad I got to read this as an ARC! 😍

I love this series so much! I’m waiting patiently (lie) for the next and final book. That ending?? Morgan, you should be in jail because that’s CRIMINAL! Nah, I’m kidding, I love you 😂💖

The action in this one? Chef’s kiss! I love the boys, but if I absolutely had to pick at gunpoint… I’d say Crypt 😉

“Anything you ask for, darling, I will become for you. If you want a weapon, use me. If you need air, breathe me. I will shield you from the pain in your past. All I ask in return is that you fucking tell me when these memories haunt you.”

And there, ladies and gentlemen, is why Crypt is my favorite 🤭

The whole chapter where all the guys give Everett advice? HILARIOUS. I’ve reread it an unhealthy amount of times 😂 And don’t even get me started on that pregnancy scene 😂

“Ask me an obvious question.
All right. What am I?
The love of my life.
Oh, fuck.”
Silas, my boy, the rizz is immaculate 😂

Until book 4 I am gonna miss Bealfire’s nicknames😭

It took me a while to read the whole book but mostly because life got crazy busy. I enjoyed the book but there were much more sexy times and sometimes the plot moved really slow until the end of course. We get a big fat cliffhanger, so be prepared to save time to start the next book.

Overall Rating 3 stars

Plot 4/5
When I was reading this, it felt like nothing was happening. Like it was merely a transition book to set up the series finale. But now that I think about it in retrospect, a lot actually happened. Maven accepted the bonds with all four mates. As a group, they leveled-up powers, and despite all the odds, they managed to gain allies along the way. She defeated two more Big Bads and achieved her main goal from the beginning - freeing all (or most) of the humans.

Characters 3/5
Maven - I really love this character. We don't get enough gender flipped Grumpy/Sunshines. Her fight to resist the L-word while falling madly in love with her mates was amusing, and I loved her interactions with bounty hunter Douglas.
The guys weren't nearly as good in this book.
Everett - Maybe because I'm an Everett girlie (give me all the fussy, fastidious MMCs), but he felt the most vivid of the guys in this book. We felt his fear, his frustration, his angst. He really stood out from the pack.
Crypt - Also retained and increased his individuality. Also broke my heart, at times.
Silas - Oh, my sweet baby Silas. I loved him in the earlier books, but he just disappeared into the background in this one. Did the author not like writing him without all the crazy voices in his head? Or does he just not have a lot of depth? He deserves so much better.
Baelfire - Sex, sex SEX, sEx, FOOD!, Sex, sex. That's it. That's the character.

Writing: 2/5 I hate it when authors use epithets in place of names. I hate it even more when previously solid authors decide they should be more creative and pick up bad habits instead.
Repeat. After. Me. Nobody refers to a person they spend most of their time with as "the white haired elemental", nobody thinks of their spouse "the Necromancer" or "the Blood Mage" or "the Golden-eyed shifter". OUR INNER MONOLOGUES DON'T WORK THAT WAY. And the whole point of Deep POV is to mimic the way brains work so that the reader feels like they ARE the POV character. Not to create narrative distance and break focus.

Immersion 3/5 Now that I think it over, this may have just been a ME thing. With all that went down in this book, I should've been more absorbed in the storyline. Yet, I kept setting it aside to read other things. And I don't remember feeling this way about the previous two books.
