The Statue of Liberty is an awesome visual journey that begins with the fantastic proposal of a French professor to give the United States a monument to commemorate the Revolutionary War alliance between the thirteen colonies and France. It documents the gift s taking symbolic form of the ancient goddess of liberty and its designation as the tallest metal statue in the world. Highlights include Liberty s construction history, her changing symbolism over the years, and her use in popular advertising and political activism. Her upraised arm has saluted scores of ships as they have passed by. Her dignity has welcomed Americans returning home from foreign parts and has given hope to newcomers seeking a fresh beginning in the land of liberty.
Everyone should look at this book because it restores your sense of people working together for a common cause all in the name of independence, freedom, and democracy.
The statue was given to us by America's oldest ally, France, in honor of our first 100 years of independence. It was the brainchild of Edouard Rene Lefebvre de Laboulaye, who was, at the time, France's leading expert on the United States, and an advocate for democracy when France was under the rule of Emperor Napoleon III. Eugene-Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc served as the engineer to the project. The statue itself stands 151 feet 1 inch high; with the 89 foot pedestal she rises to 305 feet 1 inch. Her nose is 4 feet long. Her right arm is 42 feet long. Lady Liberty is constructed out of copper, and has to be repaired and refurbished several times. Her construction was so costly that many times construction had to stop in order to do fundraising in France and the United States. The tablet she holds has inscribed on it....July 4, 1776. She has chains by her feet to symbolize slavery. She wears Roman robes. Her feet wear Roman sandals. There is so much information in this book. I found it fascinating that there is a huge support system holding Lady Liberty up, so she won't fall over or lean. There is an observation window under her where you can look up at it. Photography is plentiful.
This book was wonderful to read! I learned about the Statue of Liberty being a gift to the US from France. I read about the construction of the Statue in France, delivery of it to America, the celebrations at the Statue and the restoration of Lady Liberty in the Reagan era. This coming May (2022), my brother and I will see the Statue of Liberty in person! I recommend this book to anyone who loves American history!
As the title states, mostly a photo history of putting the Statue together. I enjoyed the black and white photos and the text was explanatory. This is not what I would call a true "book", and especially not a novel, but more like an abbreviated history of the Statue. I believe this author has written more extensive book(s) about the Statue.
The history of the Statue of Liberty is chronicled through postcards since it was gifted to NYC in 1886. I learned more about Liberty Island and how postcards evolved.
My dad told me how happy he was to see The Statue of Liberty, as a young soldier in the Army. I Loved this book, all the info n pictures are wonderful.....
