Some people are born into a family fortune. Bri has just entered into a family curse…
…I don’t want to die…was what Bri’s best friend said only days before. Never having believed in curses, Bri dismissed Aeryal’s claims and assured her friend that she would live. Assured her that all the near-death incidents were just coincidence.
Then came her funeral.
And then come the attacks on Bri’s life, attacks that are eerily similar to the ones on Aeryal. Without warning, she’s running for her life from a demonic being that only she can see, and in the midst of it all, not one, but two gorgeous guys are suddenly vying for her attention.
The thing is, mysterious artifacts snuggled away on her best friend’s bookshelf might prove that one of her boyfriends isn’t as innocent as he seems.
I was a little trepidacious going into this book, horror, apart from vampires, is not my strong suit. I don't "do" horror - ever, but I was hoping being that this was a YA horror that I'd be ok.... And I was!
Bri is a 17yr old who's best friend, Aeryal, dies mysteriously after several freaky "attacks", but not before they become blood sisters by pricking their fingers and mingling their blood, binding them. Bri starts to have some crazy hallucinations and incidents that she can't seem to explain and her friends begin to think her need for prescription sleeping pills are starting to get the best of her. Her elusive pursuer, the Demon Rikgso, finally makes his appearance and reveals that Bri is now a part of Aeryal's cursed family and has to suffer his torture for his amusement before he decides to kill her once and for all. Enter spunky mysterious new guy, Korey. He and Bri seem to get off on the wrong foot but she can't seem to stop her attraction to him. As they get to know each other Bri discovers they have a lot more in common than she thought, but can she trust him and find a way to end the constant terror and pursuit of the evil demon.
I really enjoyed The Shelf and thankfully didn't wet myself from terror! But there were some moments I had to check over my shoulder to feel safe! The story flows smoothly and there is action and intrigue involved and a little bit of romance which balanced the story nicely. I'm not going to lie, the insensitiveness of Bri's so called "friends" was wrong on so many levels, I just hope the teens of today really aren't like that... Not that I'm ancient or anything!!!!
Ms Knight did a great job of building the tension and intrigue, making me want to keep reading so see what the hell was going on! The little twist at the end was a welcome surprise and left me hoping for a second book!
Honestly, I don’t know why anyone gave this book a one star. Because of the one star I thought it was going to be a horrible book with a million typos and no interesting characters, but I found the opposite. I enjoyed the read, it’s smooth, easy and connected in way that keeps you wondering what’s going to happen next. What are the mysterious red eyes? My heart went out to Bri the main character. It’s frustrating to see such a sweet character attacked over and over. Bri seemed real to me. She reminded me of childhood friends and thinking about one of my friends going through what Bri went through helped me to connect even more with the story. I haven’t been a teenager in a long long time and it kind of took me back to those high school woes. I gave it five stars on Amazon too because I thought it should have a higher score overall. I think this would be an enjoyable read for any young adult interested in horror.
