Jordan has met a new guy at his summer job, but hanging around Henry could prove to be more than he bargained for---it could even be dangerous.

Jordan just wanted to make some college money. He took the job in the resort knowing he'd be bored---but he hadn't counted on meeting someone. The new guy, Henry, is hot. He's also more than he seems to be... the way he acts sometimes is strange. He could almost be dangerous. After all, what kind of guy working as a resort valet has a custom-made luxury car? And then there's the intense, almost angry way Henry looks at Jordan. Something tells Jordan he should watch out, but Henry is too hot for him to really care about his mind's vague warnings. Jordan knows how to take care of himself. What could possibly go wrong?

Albert Nothlit is an engineer who loves thinking about the science behind science fiction. He fell in love with literature ever since Where the Red Fern Grows made him cry as a ten-year-old. Growing up as a gay man, he realized that he had rarely been able to truly connect with the characters he read about in books because almost none of them were like him. He didn’t have any fictional role models to look up to. Now that he is a writer, he tries to convey the joy and pride of being different through his own books, celebrating the fact that each unique voice brings something special to the beautiful chorus that is human artistic creation.
He likes to think about what the future might be like with the help of science, but he has always been fascinated by that other, much more elusive corollary to scientific curiosity: the mystery of consciousness. He finds the fact that a mind can think about itself both marvelous and slightly terrifying. His books often explore how people (or aliens) grow as a result of facing hardship, which itself has taught him variable lessons through the tough portions of his life.
When he takes a break from writing, Albert loves to cook, despite his varying degrees of success when attempting to make good sushi rice.

I received my copy from the publisher through Love Romance and More

Jordan and his friend Tina are working boring but profitable jobs in a resort to save money for college. When the two of them spot the new valet, Henry, friendly rivalry is awakened between them; both Tina and Jordan wouldn’t mind getting to know this new, hot, man better and alleviate the boredom at the same time.

When Jordan and Henry get together later the same day, the latter proposes a trip to a secluded cabin on the resorts’ grounds. Jordan is interested – very much so – but can’t help feeling there’s something not quite right about Henry. He is different from Tina and him. How could somebody as young as Henry and working a crappy job, possibly afford a custom made car? And why does Henry look at Jordan with both anger and lust in his eyes? Jordan can’t escape feeling that going with Henry might be dangerous. His longing for the young man is far stronger than his fear though. After all, how much danger could he possibly be in?

This was a fun read that consistently got better as the story went on, despite the fact that I wasn’t overly fond of Jordan. His actions and reactions came across as rather selfish and inconsiderate both towards his friend Tina and towards Henry. I had to remind myself on several occasions how young he is and how self-absorbed most of us can be at that age.

This story fascinated me because it was so much more than it at first appeared to be. What starts off as a rather predictable falling in lust and running into issues sort of tale, soon turns into something quite different and unexpected. I can safely say that whatever I was expecting, it wasn’t what I ended up getting.

Maybe the twist didn’t come as a complete surprise to me. I had it figured out quite a while before Jordan did the same. That didn’t matter though; in fact it made perfect sense in the story and increased the mysterious atmosphere. I liked it. And I liked what came after the revelation and loved how the story ended. In fact, I think it was the second but last line in this novella that raised the rating from 3.5 to 4 stars. It’s just a shame that quoting that line would give the whole plot away. And trust me, that is something you wouldn’t thank me for.

This is a story for anyone who likes to be surprised and is grateful every time a book leaves them with a grin on their face. I’m going to have to keep an eye on this author.

PizzyGirl reviews Beyond by Albert Nothlit.

REVIEW: I am not really sure what to say about this one. It was so different from what I was expecting. Beyond by Albert Nothlit turned out to be a short, fast read with little character development or plot movement. It was almost as if it was meant to be the prologue to something larger. I am going to have to include spoilers to get my point across so be warned.

The story began with Jordan and Tina complaining about their boring college job. They are saved from the monotony when the handsome Henry shows up. Jordan and Tina immediately drawn to him and both decide to go after Henry. Jordan wins as Henry is gay, albeit in the closet. Jordan and Henry creep off to a cabin in the woods, get drunk, and have sex. Henry freaks out and rushes off. Jordan follows and gets in the car with Henry. They speed off and crash into a tree (the only hint at why Henry is dangerous, even though I think this is more irresponsible). Here is where it gets weird. The story continues as if both men are OK. They comfort each other and talk as if they are glad they made it out of the car alive. Jordan goes back to his room and where Tina ignores him because he won Henry over her. Or so I thought. It turns out; both men died and are now ghosts tied to the resort where they work and who can possess the bodies of men staying in the resort’s cabin. Then that’s it, the end no more. No explanation as to why they are tied to the resort, no discussion of the body possessions, no character growth, no plot other than the sex and death.

While it was not what I expected, what was there was good. It was mostly well written and flowed easily. The setup for another story (or even additions to this story) is great. Some people will really enjoy the fact that it isn’t what it seems, but I was left wanting. For me this was an average read that needed more development.
