After a traumatic childhood encounter on the African savanna, Brooks is struggling to get her life together. Her nightmares are terrifying and relentless. Her relationship with her parents is crumbling. And the “impaling dark” is always at her back, silently charging close at her heels.
She knows some immense and unnatural force took her sister’s life during their family safari, but her parents refuse to believe her, insisting that it was only a freak accident. Intending to dispel her nightmares and mend her relationship with her parents, Brooks resolves to revisit the place of her horrific encounter. To face the death. To face the truth. To let the darkness of her nightmares spear the heart of her fear once and for all.
But the ever-roaming, ever-searching impaling dark still yearns for flesh to pierce and blood to spill. Dume, Old Gory, will be waiting for her…
Mason Gallaway is a writer of mostly dark, weird, and scary stories. He is the author of GORY and SUBMERGED, and his short stories have appeared in various publications. He lives in Tennessee with his family and has a life that's not too dark, weird, or scary.
After a traumatic childhood event on a safari, Brooks, now an adult, has been dealing with the mental aftermath of those events since they occurred. Now with of years of therapy under her belt and and countless pills, both prescribed and of the self-medicated variety, she’s more determined than ever to confront the past and come face to face with the nightmare that’s been haunting her for years — a legendary elephant known as Old Gory. Brooks’ story intersects with Mack and Dee’s story, who are on a safari of their own. What follows is a dark and strange tale of self-discovery, killer animals, and one very strong message — stay the fuck away from the Savannah and leave the animals alone. If not for their sake, then especially for yours. This was a fun and dark tale that’s short on page count but big on impact. The characters were well-developed with histories and backstories that were interesting and tie in to the current events. I loved the gore and the horror bits, though this isn’t for the faint of heart. Definitely pick this one up if you’re a fan of short stories that pack a punch.
Gory, what can be said about him. Truly one magnificent, worldly being. He lived so long, no one even remembered his exact age, they just knew he was there, like forever. Rarely seen, but everyone knew of him, knew the tails of his life, his deeds, the death he left behind. But then again since he was rarely seen, he was now deemed, something that never existed anymore, he was only something that now showed up in dreams or more often in nightmares. He carried so many wounds, like from the damned. Until one night something happened, he was seen by many on this last night of this mortal world. And instead of all the rage, hate, and fire, he actually was given peace.
The author Mason Gallaway, took this story and could have done anything with it, but what he did create, was the end, fitting of a King. Thank you Mr. Gallaway, for a great story, that can be read by any one in any age group. it did make me root for Gory, from day one. And peace was all it ever wanted, it ever needed. Definitely a must read for everyone, then at the the end, ask yourself "what did this story teach me". I know mine, what about you?
A young girl follows her roots and childhood nightmares to Africa and discovers answers not only to her lifelong ancestral speculations, but deeper and more sinister phenomena.
Great gore factor! And elephants are just scary when you think about being up close to one. Story of a girl that lost family in an attack and returns to the scene as an adult. It’s about revenge. But against who?
