A minha vida com George

Rate this book

I listened to this on audiobook. I would have liked this book much more if it weren't for a few things...Firstly, why did the author feel the need to purchase a breed dog for her son? Surely, going to a shelter and adopting a puppy there or an adult dog, would have been a much better thing to do for the sake of the dog, and setting an example of compassion for her son. Instead, she purchased a dog from a breeder and so encouraging them to further breed whilst other dogs are put to death for sheer lack of a home to go to. If she was that keen on a dog of that breed, perhaps there was a breed specific rescue group for them that she could have contacted. To top it off, she chose a breed that is notoriously inbred and suffers from a multitude of health problems, which was certainly the case with George.
The other thing that grated at my nerves throughout this book, was the author's amazing lack of insight and understanding of other people - especially men. She seemed to go from one unsuitable man to the next. I was dumbfounded with the story of the first man she dated after becoming a widow - the one who had taken his daughters' cat, whom he didn't like, drove a distance from their home and dumped. The cat found its way back home, worse for wear and get this - the author found the story funny. The simple fact that she chooses to retell it AND stays with this man after he told her about it, just left me feeling appalled. Would the story have been as 'funny' is the cat had not made it home?
Then there is the American professor she dates for a few years, despite him pretty much hating George. The incident where she loses George in the park and it begins to rain and he refuses to help her look for him and keeps saying "He is ONLY a dog", left me aghast. She then breaks up with him very soon after that....AND THEN GETS BACK TOGETHER WITH HIM! Sorry, but even if my partner was not a fan of my animal companion, I would expect him to understand how much the animal meant to me and show some concern and compassion for me and help me find the dog! I found his lack of support in that incident to me quite callous towards George and towards her. Why do women put up with that kinda of treatment? Lack of self esteem? Do they not think they deserve better?
And one last gripe : Monster Mog. The author already had a cat before she got George. And she knew the cat was of the type that would most likely NOT tolerate interlopers and yet she still got a dog. When the inevitable happened and the situation at home became bad because the cat and George were not getting on, she 'solved' the situation by getting rid of the cat - the one that had been there first.
All in all, this book annoyed me too many times for me to actually enjoy it.

Suņu grāmatas viennozīmīgi ir mana vājība (galvenokār tāpēc, ka suņi kā tādi ir mana vājība), tāpēc jau pirms krietna laika šo izzvejoju Tukuma humpalās. Kādu brīdi gan tā tēma man kļuva par sāpīgu, tāpēc grāmatu kluba tēma "nopirku, jo bija atlaide" kalpoja kā solsi pašterpijai, lai saprastu, ka es to atkal varu (nu labi, ja suns grāmatā mirtu, nevarētu viss - bet par ikdienas dzīvi ar suni es varu lasīt).

So this book should be renamed to 'Judith Summers' Dating Life and Some Stories About Her Dog George'.

When you go into a book based around a dog, you definitely expect a lot more stories about the dog and not massive chunks about the author's dating life. I really didn't care. I didn't like Judith Summers voice at all in this book and she across as a posh, selfish dog owner who is happy to overfeed her pet till he's obese and not bother about training so that both his life and hers is fretful and tense.

When she bought George from the breeder, she didn't have any kind of dog things at home to care for him, thought locking him in a bathroom where there were numerous things he could eat was a good idea on his first night, lay down rules and never followed them which ended up being disastrous in the long run and basically was someone who thought they were a dog whisperer and really weren't.

I almost DNF'd this book when she told the story about the first man she dated after her husband died and this man thought a suitable dinner time conversation was telling the story of how he hated his wife and daughter's cats so much that one day he put one of them in a box, drove miles down a road to a random park and dumped the cat on the side of the road. LIKE WTF? Not only was this apparently an acceptable story to tell, he thought it was funny and laughed about it and so did Summers. Just because the cat found her way back and was no doubt traumatised, scared, hungry and cold along the way doesn't mean the story is funny or at all right.

I also hated Summers lackadaisical attitude towards overfeeding George and not bothering to train him. He ended up being a needy and clingy dog because she couldn't bother to give him some space as a puppy and teach him he was alright without her.

I also hated EVERYTHING about her dating life. Not only did she break up with the one man that was right for her (Alex), she insisted on going out with a horrible man who openly despised her dog and didn't totally care about her son. This man couldn't even say the word 'fart' without gagging. Who wants to be with a person like that? He also didn't bother to try and look for George when he got lost, saying, "he's only a dog". Yeah he would have been dumped then and there if it was me.

There were just huge chunks of this that didn't need to be in it - the history about where she lived, the whole speel about her book and who she was writing about when she first met Zac, the several chapters just about her dating which seemed to just be there so she could prove to the reader that she was still desirable even though she was a middle-aged widow and not to mention the cringey and unnecessary bit about the man who 'looked into her soul' on the train. WHO CARES!

My Life with George: What I Learned about Joy from One Neurotic (and Very Expensive) Dog
Really enjoyed listening to this audiobook by Judith Summers which was about George the cavalier King Charles spaniel and Judith's own life.
Judith sadly lost her husband and her young son his father so to help her son through a very sad time in his life Judith decides to purchase a puppy which was when George became part of the family.
George ends up helping both of them through their loss and there is both laughter and tears along the way.
The narration was really good and had me listening till the end of this really lovely true story.
Recommended.

I never give up on a book, but I'm taking this back to the library without finishing it.

Page 100, all going swimmingly then the author meets a man, who 'impresses' her with a story about how he SHOVES HIS DAUGHTERS' CAT INTO A BOX, DRIVES IT INTO A FOREST AND THROWS IT OUT. THEN DRIVES OFF WITHOUT IT, ABANDONING IT THERE AND CLAIMING NO KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT HAPPENED. The author claims she "fell about laughing" when she heard the story, then proceeded to start a relationship with this cruel idiot. Despite having a cat and dog. Bearing in mind this is supposed to be a memoir about the love of a dog.

Sorry Judith, but I don't want to read about you laughing at some evil bastard being cruel to animals. I hope someone does the same to him. Shame, I was enjoying George's story until then. I wish him and your cat all the luck in the world.

A quick read - very enjoyable. As the other reviewers have stated, it's as much of her life after she experiences two losses so close together, one being a parent and the other being her life love.

George is a character - certainly knows how to twist Judith around his little thumb, er, paw!

This book had me crying in some parts and laughing in others. Most anxious to find out how George is doing these days.

O título original descreve o cão como "neurótico" - My Life with George: What I Learned about Joy from One Neurotic (and Very Expensive Dog) - ora a melhor maneira de tornar um cão neurótico é criá-lo sem educação, sem estruturas.

My Life With George

I was browsing the books in an Italian library one day – particularly fascinated by the English section – trying to find a suitable distraction for the two remaining weeks I had to put up with. Many of the titles there held little, if not zilch interest to me. Same went for ‘My Life With George’. Hence why I skipped over it for five times in a row. To me, it sounded like a cheesy romance the likes of ‘my-life-with-an-accidentaly-discovered-bloke-that-turned-out-to-be-the-love-of-my-sad-excuse-of-a-life’. Generally, really not my cup of tea.

But as options were scarce and many of the books there I’d already read, I shrugged and pulled out this book as well. I’d planned on inspecting the cover and reading the summary… synopsis… whatever it is you call that thing at the back cover. Well, that didn’t go well, because I was instantly in love with it. I’m an animal lover and I own a dog that very much looks like the one on the cover.

And then I saw the price and hesitated. With just 40 euros to keep me fed until the end of the stage, and the book costing 12.50 euros, I was really getting myself worked up by considering not buying it. I was facing either starvation or dying of a broken heart.

Then I had the bright idea of reading the first phrase. I was hooked and I found it near impossible to put the book away. I’m rarely instantly hooked. Not even Harry Potter did not present such an attraction. A nervous breakdown later and drama over the phone with my mother, I had it. And I was somewhere in purgatory because, although I had my books, I’d also lost money my parents had added to my credit card that day. Namely, half the sum. Hence the drama.

Resuming – the first chapter of the book is so lighthearted that you expect the entire book to be the most hilarious thing ever. It was- but at the same time it reduced me to tears a couple of times. It was a book that touched some of the more realistic points of life I had decided to overlook. It brings on the potential of losing someone you love and how one deals with it. It brought on some of my more personal issues, which was a complete plus for “My Life With George”.

I was thoroughly impressed by how easily Judith Summers mixed humor with drama, giving the reader such a fantastic book that it’s hard to put it down even as your eyeballs are practically one step away from falling out of their sockets because of tiredness. She compels you to read her story through the easy, casual usage of her words.

Actually, you needn’t go further than the first paragraph to be forever and irrevocably stuck to it.

“The alarm wakes me up at six thirty a.m. prompt. Not the clock on the bedside table, which is set for seven fifteen, but a piercing bark from the hall.”

However, the book does have one small drawback that occasionally irked me a bit. I was sometimes annoyed by the blending of current actions with older ones and so on. But my small, passing annoyance was a small price to pay.

I’ve read “My Life With George” with so much pleasure that I’d repeat the experience several times over and never get bored of it once.

Just take my word on it and read the thing because you’re never going to regret it. It’s one of the most fantastic books I have ever had the joy of reading.

I loved this little book for several reasons. One is that I have a George of my own although mine is named Bentley. As the author recounts her struggles after becoming a widow with a young son, she doesn't stint on portraying honest feelings. When she gets a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel to have someone for her and her son to come home to, she tells us of how this little dog changed her life. Her feelings for George sometimes interferes with her romantic life. You have to laugh at George's antics and cry about his illnesses and pain. My Cavalier shares many of the same traits as George so I could readily relate to her story. In the end, she has become a strong and determined women. Little George is just as strong and determined. A delightful read.

I'd say this book is more about learning about love than anything else. Summers stumbled into pet ownership while floundering as a single mother after both her husband and her father died a mere two weeks apart. George is not the typical dog, and life with him is far from easy. But struggling through grief, housebreaking and the arrival of adolescence of both boy and dog is both a heartbreaking and uplifting experience that Summers shares with utter candor. This is a very charming book that I wouldn't hesitiate to recommend, especially to folks who liked Marley and Me.

This was a cute/fun/easy read at times. I wanted to give it five stars but I can't. One star removed because she went straight to purebred dogs without giving any thought to shelter dogs. Second star removed because she believed the breeders BS when they told her CKCS's were the "perfect breed". Last but not least, the third star removed because she thought that Anthony tale of Norman the cat was funny...WTF. I'd love to blindfold Anthony and take him to a foreign country with no money and see if he can find his own damn way home. Jerk!

"My life with George" is a funny and moving account of an adorable Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The story portrays his many misdeamours and the wonderful way in which he helped fill a void in Judith and Joshua's lives while driving them barking mad along the way.

Judith Summers

Judith doživljava tešku taumu zbog bolesti, a kasnije i smrti svoga supruga Udija.

As a cavie owner myself, I HAD to read this book. I found it truly enjoyable although it went sometimes deeper than I expected. It’s not a sweet dog story, but also describes the author’s struggle with the loss of her loved ones and her constantly choosing the wrong men. What a jerk was that guy that dumped the cat, and I really hated it when her boyfriend wanted to leave when George was missing in the woods.
I will not give this book 5 stars because it annoyed me that Judith constantly overfed poor George and never tried to train him properly.
And above all I was happy that sweet George didn’t die at the end!
As a dog, and especially cavalier lover, I strongly recommend this book!

Honestly, the book was okay, and I would recommend it, but that does not mean that there are not things that I find problematic about it. First of all, I have no doubt that she loves George, but the fact that he seems to constantly be overweight and undertrained is perhaps an issue. Not only this, but I question what happened to Monster Mog, particularly knowing the cat already disliked dogs.

Despite this, I loved reading about George, and despite the problems with the book for anyone who loves dogs, this book is a definite read.

3.5 Judith Summers is a widow with a young son and they are both missing the man in their life Judith decides maybe they should look for a dog as a companion for her son never dreaming that she would end up with a dog who took over their lives. Amusing book and about a spaniel that rules the household.

A great dog story! Sometimes a difficult dog can do wonders for a family in need and George was one of those. Along with his personality he brought trials and tribulations with enormous vet bills and demanding nature. If you love dogs this is a book for you!
