About the author

Divya Prakash Dubey is India’s first of now many ‘Hinglish’ writers, An Engineer and a MBA by education, a former-AGM, Marketing in a telecom company and now a content editor in leading TV Channel, the combination has been unseen in the world of writing on many levels. But that is what he is, a break from the existing moulds of factory made pieces coming in the market.

Humorous down to his very core, and equally deep in his thoughts. His unique view on life and relations makes him an expert storyteller of the popular genre, and these views have been formed by closely observing life from small towns to big Corporate organisations of the country.
His three published books have all been bestsellers - Two collection of Short Stories - “Terms and Conditions Apply” and “Masala Chai” and 2 Novels “Musafir Cafe” & "October Junction", which has started changing the aspect of youth towards life. The "masala" in this Chai was too much for me to handle.
I liked 2 stories (Falana Engineering College; Time) from this collection of 11 short stories.
There were others which were okay - Vidya Kasam, Jeevanshaadi.com, Fill in the blanks.
Rest of them were cheap and in bad taste - Keep Quiet, Love you forever, keval baligon ke liye.
The pace is good and no story is boring as such. Okay for a time pass read.

मुझे लिखना नहीं आता।

कहने का अर्थ है कि मेरा मानना है कि मैंने आजतक जो कुछ भी लिखा है, वो साहित्य की श्रेणी में नहीं रखा जा सकता। कुछ दिन पहले अंग्रेज़ी के अपने एक प्रिय लेखक को पढ़ते समय अचानक ये एहसास हुआ कि अच्छा लिखने के लिए सर्वाधिक आवश्यक न तो भाषा पर पकड़ है और न ही कोई जटिल परिकल्पना। सबसे ज़्यादा ज़रूरी है साहस।

साहस किस बात का? अपने सारे आडंबरों को त्याग कर, रेशा रेशा अपने मन को खोलने का। अपने अन्तःकरण के सबसे गहरे हिस्से में गोता लगा के, बचपन से अपने भीतर छुपाए हुए कौतूहल को बेबाकी से बयान करने का। अपने अंदर दबे द्वेष, ईर्ष्या, असुरक्षा और दुःख को बेनकाब करना हर किसी के बस की बात नहीं। समाज के नियम अपनी जगह हैं परन्तु हम सब ने मन ही मन कभी ना कभी उनकी सीमाओं को लांघा ज़रूर है। उस ग्लानि और अपराधबोध को अपने मन के किसी कोने में लिए अधिकतर लोग अपना पूरा जीवन बिता देते हैं।

मैंने कई नए लेखकों की किताबों को पढ़ने की कोशिश की है। उनमें से कई अपनी किताब को bestseller बताते हैं। मैंने जितनी भी ऐसी किताबें उठाईं , मुझे उनमें बहुत बनावट नजर आयी। शायद उनको हिम्मत बटोरने में और समय लगे या शायद मैं ही old fashioned हूं। पर अगर मौका लगे तो एक बार दिव्यप्रकाश दुबे को पढ़ें, खासकर कि उत्तर प्रदेश के रहने वाले।

ये कहानियां हम सब की हैं। बस फ़र्क इतना है कि हम ये कहानियां अपने अंदर दबा के जी रहे हैं। कभी कभी उनको पढ़ लेने से अपने अंदर का भार कुछ कम हो जाता है । शायद हम में भी थोड़ी हिम्मत आ जाए।

Loved the 2 engineering college stories...
Kab ki patthar ho chuki thi muntazir aankhen magar,
Chhoo ke jab dekha to mere haath geele ho gaye.
As for the other stories, whether they were good or ordinary, they were all very readable and engrossing. Sometimes the end was not satisfying, sometimes the underlying message was lost on me, but the journey was worth it, even if the destination was not. And the journey matters, right ?
Will be picking up Terms and Conditions Apply by the author despite a negative review by a friend.

This book is for people who have lived at least once in the hostel during their student life, have come from small town where engineering degree is the key to a successful life. Each story is a gem, written from the heart. There are some strong life messages embedded as well in these stories. Laced with nostalgia the book will surely take you back to your carefree student life days.

पन्ने दर पन्ने यह एहसास होगा की ये तो मेरी या मेरे दोस्त या मेरे मोहल्ले या मेरे शहर की कहानी ही तो है, पर दिव्यप्रकाश ने उसे तराश कर आपकी यादों की मेज़ पे सजा दिया है। इस किताब की कहानियाँ इसके शीर्षक की तरह ही आपकी रोज़-मर्ज़ा की चाय की तरह ही है, जो हर चुस्की के साथ आपकी तलब बुझाती जाती है। और हाँ इस मसाला चाय में हल्का-फुल्का नाश्ता भी साथ है।

There is something so simple and nostalgic about most of the stories. These stories trap the essence and fragrance of India like no english story can. The words , the phrases , everything triggers a memory and many smiles when you know the same happened to you. I had issues with the way some characters or situations evolved but overall this was a very satisfying read.

Modern writer with modern touch

I am from Lucknow and that's why I get the references used in the book. But it doesn't matter you are from Lucknow or not. This book will make you think over at the end of every story. I liked every story and can't decide which story is better than the other. All are superb. I recommend this book to those who think that Hindi writers can't write good books.

A trip down memory lane...

An anthology, this little gem of a book is remarkable because of its constant (and uncanny) ability to speak to you in your own language. Words that you had forgotten, and phrases that had been a part of your system (and the world around you)- both resurface (much like old school notes do when you clean up your cupboard).

The stories are not restricted to one particular sphere of life- they include nuggets from the 'good old' school days, portions that talk about adult relationships, and a decent chunk of engineering/college life (and the associated paraphernalia).

The best ones, in my view, are the ones that are set on the Engineering campus. It's all relate-able- all of it would remind you of something or the other about the days you have left somewhat behind.

I am sure some or the other nuance of each and every story would connect to each one of us at a personal level- what that something is.. depends on the sort of life we have led, and where we have led it.

If nostalgia is your drug, and Hindi your mother-tongue, this book is a refreshing read.

दुबे जी ने नयी पीढ़ी की नब्ज़ पकड़ने की कोशिश की है। पर कहानियाँ निखर के नहीं आ पायी।
कोशिश अच्छी थी पर बात कुछ जमी नहीं। पाठक रिलेट कर सकें इसलिए बेहद कैज़ुअल भाषा का प्रयोग किया गया है.
कुछ लोगो को शायद ये बहुत भाये भी. मुझे कुछ कहानियाँ ठीक लगी , कुछ साधरन.
बहरहाल, टाईम पास के लिए एक बार तो पढ़ ही सकते हैं।

Masala Chay.. नाम सुनते ही सोचा था इस किताब को पढ़ना ही पड़ेगा और वाक़ई में मसाला चाय की तरह इसमें भी ज़िंदगी की कुछ ज़ायक़े छुपे हुए थे । कहानियों में अपने मोहल्ले और लोगों में चल रही आम सी बातें नज़र आएँगी और लगेगा ये तो हो चुका है मेरे साथ भी .. ख़ूबसूरत है ये कहानियाँ .. Masala Chai is my first book from the author.
I have always loved reading short stories and about this book I have read some mixed reviews across the social media.
Masala Chai is a collection of 11 short stories ranging from a little girl Yashvi, college tales of students like Ankit and Tarun to soon-to-be married couple Gaurav and Yamini.
The author has rightly put in his foreword that the stories are written on topics people usually discuss over a cup of Chai with their friends. So people might find many of the stories relatable with their lives.
The author has used Hinglish (Hindi + English) throughout the book.
While reading short stories, I always look for unexpected endings. Some of these stories had brought a smile to my face while quite a few ended abruptly. The stories that worked for me were "Falana College of Engineering", "Jeevanshaadi.com" and "Fill in the blanks".
Being from an engineering background myself, I could resonate with "Falana College of Engineering".
But nevertheless, all the stories are light read and you can enjoy them with a cup of tea on a chilly winter weekend.

इस साल अभी तक कोई भी हिंदी उपन्यास ना पढ़ने का मलाल जो दिल में कहीं घर कर हुआ था। सोचा इस नयीं पीढ़ी के लेखक दिव्य प्रकाश दूबे की रचना मसाला चाय से इस मलाल को दरकीनार किया जाए। कुछ wavelength ऐसी match करती है कि हम दोनो ही लखनऊ निवासी, एक ही उम्र दराज़ और पेशे से वही घिसे पिटे Engineer-MBA combo वाले प्राणी है। हिंदी लेखन की सबसे बढ़ी दुविधा यह है कि जो पुराने लेखक है उनकी रचनायें इस पीढ़ी को पल्ले नहीं पढ़ती और नए लेखन में वही cheap कहानियों की भरमार हैं। इस कोलाहल में कुछ नए लेखक उभर कर आए है और उन में से एक है DPD। अगर आप कोई धुरंधर उपन्यास की खोज में निकले है तो इस किताब में कुछ नहीं मिलेगा। यह किताब कुछ वही घीसिंपीटी पर प्यारी कहानियों संग्रह है। कुछ कहानियाँ आपको हसाएँगी कुछ सोचने पे मजबूर करेंगी और कुछ एक दम पसंद आएँगी। अगर आप लेखक की पृष्ठभूमि से तालुक्क रखते है तो ये कहानियाँ को हृदय समीप पाएँगे। इस चर्चा में कहानियों पर ध्यान नहीं देना चाहता हूँ क्यूँकि ये कहानियाँ इतनी साधारण है की कौनसी किसको पसंद आए ये अन्दाज़ लगा पाना असम्भव कार्य है।



अगर आप हिंदी भाषी है या हिंदी पढ़ सकते है तो ये २०० पन्ने की किताब कुछ हँसाएगी कुछ रुलाएगी। जाइए पढ़िए और ख़ुद जान ज़ाएये।

I have never read Hindi books. This is the first hindi book and author had penned down all the stories beautifully and as a reader we can relate to each and every story. The language is simple and narration is flawless and urge you to completely hooked to the stories till the end. Every story makes you remember your childhood days. During my childhood, i also used to ask for promises for particular thing. Even i didn’t know about love or adult movies. Every story will make you happy. It was perfectly matched with the title and one can read with a cup of masala chai. My favourite stories were jeevansaathi.com, vidhya kasam, love you forever. overall a nice read and would like to recommend to everyone. They can read it while travelling also.

हुवा ऐसा ki मैने सोचा के ये एक उपन्यास हैं, मेने introduction पढ़ा ही नहीं था और मुझे लगा ki ये एक कहानी हर कहानी को तरह हैं, और जब मेने पहला chapter पढ़ा तोह दूसरे chapter माई उन characters को ढूंढ रहा था, but third chapter माई samajh आया ki यह short stories हैं, तब मेने एक लम्बी सांस छोड़ी और आराम से बैठा एक एक chapter को अच्छे से बड़े प्यार से पढ़ने को, and by god क्या author है यार ये, इतना आसान और आम बोल चाल वाली languaga हैं ना ki लगता है ki मेरे ही dost ने मुझे ये story whatsapp किया हैं.

मगर सच मैं बड़ा अच्छा लगा पढ़ के, और वो बच्चो या teenagers ki कहानियाँ और अच्छी लगी, लगा ki हाँ मेरे आस पास के लोगो ki ही बात हो रही हैं, वही सब चाल रहा हैं जो sayad हो सकता था या हो रहा हैं, but love this work, muah.

ये book दिव्य प्रकाश दुबे जी की लिखी हुई है तो review भी उनके ही style मे देना पड़ेगा।

हिन्दी लिट्रेचर की ये मेरी पहली book है। पहले भी पढ़ी है लेकिन शौक से पहली बार पढ़ी है। ये book आम लोगों की लैंग्वेज में लिखी गई है। ऐसा लगता है जैसे सारी कहानियां कही ना कही आपके लाइफ से जुड़ी है। ख़ासकर के इंजीनियरिंग वाली स्टोरी पढ़ने के बाद ऐसा लगता है कि कॉलेज लौट कर सभी फ्रेंड्स को hug करू। पूरी बुक में sarcasm का भी जबरजस्त यूज हुआ है। कुल मिलाकर entertainment बहुत है इस बुक में।

अब लगता नही है कि में उस तरीके से कभी हिन्दी लिट्रेचर को देखूंगा जैसे पहले देखा करता था। बहुत कुछ बाकी है पढ़ने को।

दिव्य प्रकाश दूबे जी के शुरुआती दिनों की क़िताब है मसाला चाय। छोटी छोटी कहानियां हैं... मसाला हैं आम जिंदगी की, हर मौसम में उबलती घुमड़ती मन को आराम देती चाय की चुस्की हैं।

चाहें इंजीनियरिंग कॉलेजों के बनते बिगड़ते रिश्तों की बात हो या फिर प्लेसमेंट में रेंगते हुए एक खूबसूरत भविष्य का सपना देखते हुए युवा हों। एक किशोर लड़के के भावावेश में फूट फूट कर रोना हो या मुहल्ले में बनते हुए रिश्ते हो। बच्चों में कुछ और अधिक जानने की उत्सुकता है।

कहानी अच्छी ही है, औसत सी। भाषा शैली में रफ टफ संवाद अटपटे से लगते हैं। कहनियां अधिक प्रभावी नहीं है। बहुत कुछ अधूरा है।

दुबे जी जब बोलते है तो कहते है मै उन पेहलू पर कहानी लिखता हूँ जो लोग कान मे फुसफुसाकर बात करते और सच ही कहते वो। इस किताब की हर एक कहानी सामाज के उन सच को समाने बड़ी ही खूबसूरती से प्रस्तुत करती है जिनके बारे मे हम सब जानते हैउसका हिस्सा भी है मगर बात नहीं करते है। छोटी कहानिओ के माध्यम से वो हमें आज के कंटेम्पररी वर्ल्ड की कंटेम्पोररी भाषा हिंगलिश मे कंटेम्पररी रिस्तों की सुन्दर व्याखय है। और इन आम कहानियों के बिच कुछ वाक्य इतने दमदार है की आप उनको बार बार पढ़ने का मन करता है.

दिव्य प्रकाश दुबे का प्रशंसक रहा हूं। इस किताब से भी हूं। कहानियां बहुत छोटे से लेकर काफी बड़े मुद्दों पर हैं और दिल बहलाते हुए बचपन की मासूम गलियों से घुमाते हुए, उस नाबालिग के सवाल वाले चौक पर पहुंच कर आप पेट हैं सामने एक नया मोहल्ला शुरू हो रहा है जिसका नाम है जवानी। ये सारा कुछ आप इस किताब से अनुभव कर सकते हैं।

एक बढ़िया किताब

मसाला चाय पहेली बार हमने पी नही पर पढ़ी है।मसाला चाय की बातें कुछ ऐसी है कि हम सब के जीवन मे हो चुकी है पर हम वो भुल गए है।इस लिए की उसमे से शायद कई बातें जो हम दुबारा नही करेंगे पर जब भी हम वो किसीको कहेंगे तो उन्हें अच्छा बहुत लगेगा।मसाला चाय उन्ही बीती कुछ मज़ेदार बातोंको दुबारा याद करा देती है।

The author talks about taboos of society in his short stories but fails to justify the purpose among most of them. I kept reading to find something good among all the stories but couldn't really make sense of what was being conveyed. So its just a time pass read, not up to my expectations at least! You don't really gain anything from this book.

This book has collection of short stories. The stories which we share with our friends and family. Few events of life. About the childhood stories, story of first love, story of family. This book is ok reading. You can skip this one if your reading list is already full. But you don't have to do anything on Bus or Train journey then buy it and have fun. Like listening to someone else story

Good collection of stories

Very well written stories.. all stories connect with us. Somewhere detailing can be done to have some more impact. Overall nice book to have in your collection
