So far, this has being one of the craziest stories I have ever read. Shen Qingqiu is the most insane, unhinged and utterly hilarious character I have ever read. Like with the first book, he truly feels like a modern day reader going on a fantasy adventure a familiar world, if his constant panics, internally screaming and internal utterly unput together he is. He truly speaks to my soul as I go in my every day life.
Also, this is Luo Binghe is not the one I was expecting. The fandom sold me a crybaby puppy for months, this is not a puppy at all, this man is terrifying and would make me bolt in the opposite direction the minute he appeared, where is our White Lotus??? And it's not that I don't like him, come on, he is really cool, but come on SVSSS fandom, if you are going to sell me a puppy, I will expect a puppy, not a derange wolf!
Also, this is Luo Binghe is not the one I was expecting. 5 'Shizun and his baby demon' stars
I still can't belive that I almost skipped this book because I thought that it's not that good. What a mistake that would be!!
The plot in this volume was totally new to me because donghua hasn't covered this part yet (if we'll even get the second season like ever?!) Anyway, vol 2 is mostly angst and pain with lots of sarcastic moments and some sweet scenes as well.

I just love my baby Binghe as a demon. He's become such a badass character but at the same time, he's a smol precious marshmallow that we all want to protect.
Shen Qingqiu is still brilliant and in my opinion, the best unreliable narrator ever!

In conclusion, I laughed so much and I love it. I rarely feel comedies to be funny, least of them parodies but this is just amazing. I don't get why some people take this book so seriously. It's trash in all its trashy glory and it's trashily awesome 💖

I had high hopes for this one, but I was left disappointed. I was initially enjoying the storyline, but I soon became bored, but I will still read the entire work because my love for MXTX is eternal. She's written some of the most beautiful love stories I've ever read.
There are a few things I particularly enjoy, particularly the character of Shen.
I'll have to wait for the official third book to come out, but I'll finish the story by reading the unofficial translation. I mean, they deserve all the credit for providing translations for us over the years..

I have to say that I'm enjoying this re-read more than the first time I read it. I think the set-up of the story is a lot to get used to if you haven't read this sort of story before and so I can enjoy it more the 2nd time through.
This part of the story, Binghe is dark and twisted. He is somewhat insane as well. I miss the pure-hearted disciple from the first part. Still, this story had some great moments. The more I read MXTX, the more I'm convinced of her genius. I really wish she would put out more stories. They are so good.

This is all one long story published in Chinese. Because of the way translations go, this regular sized book will be over 1,000 pages in English, so it was split up into 4 books in English and it's really only one story.
This story is fascinating. It has so many twists. It's deconstructing the genre while celebrating the genre at the same time. I suppose it's meta as there are so many within withins in this story.
Previously, our main character was in our world and he read these online novels. This one author was very bad at writing, but he liked the protagonist. who was the main character in a Stallion novel, which is like Conan, an overpowered male who gets all the women. Our main character, SQQ, died and he was put in the story as the villain, who the male lead kills. He knows this will happen, so he is trying to avoid dying again, for if he dies in this story, he is gone for good.
So what ends up happening is that SQQ and the male lead end up flipping places and the male lead becomes the villain and SQQ is really the good guy now. Not only that, but with the small changes SQQ makes to the story, the male lead falls in love with him and no longer has a harem or cares about any of the female characters.
That's where this story starts.
Spoiliery ahead:
In the last book SQQ dies saving his student, but he used a magic mushroom to bring him back to life. It's 5 years later our the male lead has gone very dark.
The book is a little creepy. There is necrophilia in the story and that's never sexy. I also feel like there's some extreme stuff going on and it's kind of abusive.
So much could be fixed by these characters if they would simply talk with each other. That bugs me when it happens. I'm still invested in this story and can't put the silly things down, but of MXTX's 3 books, this is my least favorite so far. Maybe the ending will turn me around, I don't know.
There was some kissing, finally in a dream sequence, but it's still not freely given by both parties and I don't like that. I'm ready for the relationship to heat up, but it's become so twisted and toxic and I don't feel like I should be rooting for it at this point. This is some dark story telling.
Given that, I can't wait to start the next book.

For all the fuss about canon fodder getting killed off for no reasons, MXTX really did do the same to her characters. Yes. That is correct, I am still salty about the death of Gongyi Xiao. He as a righteous member of sect. One of the very few outside of the Cang Qiong mountain. Also it tells how much of the story I had forgotten. I feel like I will feel the same when rereading the other books.
Meanwhile, this volume has to be the saddest out of the four of the series. It really made my heart twitch several times with sadness. At the other end it was one of the funniest. SQQ remains one of the funniest protagonists in the danmei world for sure.

If Volume 1 is a comedy of errors, Volume 2 is where the plot hits the fan. Bound by the unyielding rules of the System, Shen Qingqiu is forced to enact the ultimate betrayal: pushing his precious, teary-eyed disciple into the hellish Endless Abyss.
When Luo Binghe eventually returns as a fully-fledged, ridiculously overpowered Demon Lord, the tension is immaculate. Shen Qingqiu is absolutely convinced he is about to be turned into a human stick, entirely missing the fact that Binghe isn't looking for revenge—he is a touch-starved, emotionally unregulated mess looking for validation. The sheer magnitude of their mutual misunderstandings is both agonizing and hysterically funny.
Pure, unadulterated, unhinged chaos unfolds. In a desperate bid to fix the storyline (and survive), Shen Qingqiu fakes his own death using a highly questionable magical plant body. Unfortunately, he drastically underestimates Binghe's separation anxiety.
Finding out that his disciple is currently carrying his old, perfectly preserved corpse around like a comfort blanket is the exact moment Shen Qingqiu's brain completely short-circuits. Colour me surprised, but I liked this one less than the first one.
There was barely any humour, the two main characters didn't interact that much and when they did there was no communication, most of the scenes felt disjointed...and I'm not really a fan of Luo Binghe's personality change.
I knew that he'd change while he was away, but he doesn't feel like a unique character anymore, but like one I've read about several times before.
In the first volume, the amount of characters was kinda manageable, but in this one, I was over it. Like, I honestly just care about the two mains and that's it.
The tiny bits of romance we got were weird, because the progression doesn't feel natural. That kiss felt like it had come out of nowhere, and didn't feel romantic at all. Hopefully the next two books will fix this and I'll like them better.

MXTX is the queen of the angsty slow burn romance!! I enjoyed this book so much more than the 1st book… and absolutely love every moment Luo Binghe and Shen Qingqiu meet and interact,so much misunderstanding but that is how the angsty romance built up! The story is still hilarious and fun as book 1 so many crazy events, monsters, magic, battles.. I truly enjoy my time reading this book!!

Just finished The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System Vol. 2, and it’s such a fun continuation of the chaos! Shen Qingqiu is still stuck trying to avoid his villainous fate, but of course, things don’t go as planned (as usual). His attempts to navigate the plot while keeping Luo Binghe happy are both hilarious and stressful—especially now that Luo Binghe’s feelings for him are becoming... more complicated. You can really feel the tension building, but it’s balanced so well with the humor that it never feels too heavy.
I really loved how this volume starts to develop the relationship between Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe. Shen Qingqiu is so desperate to stay on Luo Binghe’s good side that he sometimes ends up making things worse, and it’s hilarious to watch. Luo Binghe, on the other hand, is becoming more powerful and dangerous, but still holds onto his affection for Shen Qingqiu, which makes for some great (and awkward) moments between them.
The world-building is still a bit dense at times, but once you get through the setup, the character dynamics really shine. The supporting characters are also starting to play bigger roles, and they add a lot of flavor to the story. There’s a nice balance between action, humor, and a growing sense of danger as the plot thickens.

Shen Qingqiu was filled with both deep compassion as well as a feeling that this was extremely absurd.You and me both, friend.
There's a certain segment of folks of fannish temperament who can watch or read a story and interpret any meeting of eyes between male characters as gazes full of poorly-suppressed longing. Over the years (decades, believe it or not!), I've enjoyed a decent number of fanfics, and pro published books, that cater to these perceptions. Intense subjectivity and romance are what I'm looking for in stories like this.
I was somewhat on the fence about this serial after reading the first translated volume. It was fun, for sure, but although I'd expected it to play off the fannish mindset in the previous paragraph, it only did so once or twice. This volume was that pretty much the whole way through, with a gloriously WTF imagination behind it. Luo Binghe's impassioned fervor, Shen Qingqiu's not-very-successful retreats from it, the mind-boggling situations that happen as a direct result of their interactions (weirdest macguffin ever!), and the myriad other characters swept up in their story, are all a joy to follow along with.
In this volume, Shen Qingqiu comes to the realization that he's been treating Luo Binghe, and his own situation, rather frivolously, and has some remorse about it. There are a lot of meta layers in this story, from the author of the "original" Proud Immortal Demon Way and one of its readers being transmigrated into the story itself; to MXTX being the author of this story and presuming certain expectations of you, the reader, that are constantly twisted into very odd new forms while also being completely recognizable; to characters within the story spreading gossip and singing ballads about its leads (while a disguised Shen Qingqiu has no choice but to listen). It's brilliant, and fast-moving, and funny, and appalling, and surprisingly touching and humane.
I'm absolutely a SVSSS fan now. The next volume can't come soon enough. It misses out on a single star for being maybe a little too hectic for its own good and losing a plot thread or two along the way, and having a few too many characters to keep track of. I've got to mention Velinxi's illustrations, that perfectly captured some of the most striking scenes in the book, particularly the ones where Luo Binghe is in the same scene with Shen Qingqiu. I especially liked how (true spoiler!) .

REVIEW: This book is imperfect. It's clumsy, and that's all it needed to be for it to become my all-time favorite. It's a stupid reason to boost a rating, but have you ever had a book comfort you at your lowest? More so, make a show of fighting your exact monsters?
Luo Binghe is imperfect. Abandoned, confused, and willing to destroy the one thing he doesn't know he needs--and he's afraid of the way history repeats.
Shen Qingqiu is trying to survive and has no choice but to be in Luo Binghe's torment.
But there's a way that this book just made me sob in a million pieces. Luo Binghe needed love, and he didn't know. Shen Qingqiu gave him what he could to let him KNOW the world could be so much more than his tragic past, and that he could stray from the path of endless bloodshed and vengeance, and try for a life where he is surrounded by those who cherish him.
This was my reminder that I was human :') that I could break seemingly obvious cycles and reach for the ones I WANTED and that would suit my needs. Im a pathetic crybaby! So what? Who else would get so emotional during a review?
Seeing Luo Binghe come to terms with his emotions and Shen Qingqiu's stubbornness just made the tension so much thicker, and to the very end; binghe chasing Shen Qingqiu made me throw up and there are tear trophies on my copy.

this was a book that came to me at the right time in my life, and for that: I'm attached to it heaps beyond MDZS and TGCF. i don't know, how else am I supposed to make these words come together??????????????????? KMS I love this book.
INITIAL READ - Feb 16 - IVE NEVER CRIED DURING A BOOK UNTIL THIS. UGH. SQQ and Luo Binghe had such Cat and Mouse dynamics in this book and IYKYK the last pages before chapter 9, they ruined me. Will read the next one, thanks for the angst MXTX.
REREAD - July 29 reread; have I ever mentioned this is my favorite book?? in the entire whole wide world?? the first book to take my tears, my heart, and life. I'd always resonated with Shen Qingqiu as a character (hateful book reader) but Luo Binghe's need for love felt like a call-out to me. MXTX put me in fragments, broke me, then turned them into characters. That's why I prefer SVSSS over TGCF. Live, Laugh, MXTX.

I also love the actual discussion of the change in Binghe when he was able to actually be a person and not just a novel protagonist. Delightfully twisted!
This volume was insane. Funny and entertaining but bathed in this dark, haunting mood.
I’m LIVING for manipulative, obsessive, yandere Luo Binghe. Shen Qingqiu is even funnier here, and his inability to analyze Luo Binghe’s obvious feelings made for some wild misunderstandings.
I’m vibing with the darker, bizarre tone of this series and I’m excited for more.

The joy this series brings me is incomparable to anything else. It is so funny and I just love the characters. Shen Qingqiu, who is an athlete because he jumps through all the mental hoops just to explain away Binghe's romantic openings. He's aware that they're part of the cheesiest romantic tropes, that he holds the love interest's position in relation to Binghe, and yet he cannot fathom that Binghe would be in love with him. What a clueless legend! He also literally jumped out a window instead of talking to his former disciple, which I can really relate to!
P.S: the way Shen Qingqiu has a harem in this volume? Literally any guy within a mile radius has a crush on him, and I think that's beautiful.
