Of Wrath and Storms

Rate this book
She’s the light to his darkness…But her shadows are whispering.

Two months after the attempted coup, Thasia is still reeling. Only Bressen remains of the Triumvirate as the other two territories drag their feet in replacing their rulers.

Meanwhile, Cyra struggles to find her footing in a world where she’s no longer just a winemaker, but one of the most powerful perimortals on the continent. She may have a dizzying array of magic at her fingertips, but she’s unpracticed and reluctant to use her abilities after two decades of having to hide her powers.

Cyra and Bressen’s upcoming marriage should be cause for celebration, but obstacles seem determined to make their path to wedded bliss as rocky as possible, and their enemies are closer than they think.

Cyra’s newfound knowledge about herself and her powers is only the beginning as the layers peel back to reveal a truth much bigger than she or anyone else could imagine. A storm is gathering, but is Cyra part of the solution or part of the threat?

Karen C.P. McDermott grew up reading historical romance novels and had dreams of one day writing them. When she later discovered the fantasy romance genre and realized that making up worlds was more fun than doing historical research, a new calling was born. The Last Triumvirate is her debut novel. When not writing ‘smut,’ Karen makes wine, gardens, does pottery, and conducts scholarly research on ‘trash talk.’ She’s been cited as an expert on this topic by ESPN and the BBC.

‘Of Wrath and Storms’ was a phenomenal book. It was gripping and almost impossible to put down from the moment I picked it up. This book has so many plot twists, concurrent story lines, and entertaining side characters. Love, SPICE, soul mates, struggles, revenge, magic, action, assassins – this book has it all. It is an emotional rollercoaster that will leave you begging for the next book in the series.

Cyra is a strong female lead grappling with overwhelming powers who doesn’t take anyone’s crap but is not immune to faults. Bressen is a very strong magic user and the most recent remaining triumvirate lord with a fearsome reputation but simultaneously challenges and is brought to his knees by Cyra. Cyra struggles with controlling her powers and her new status in the world at the same time as a new triumvirate lord joins Bressen. This new lord is deeply mistrusting of what Cyra is and constantly challenges both Bressen and Cyra. Axenus trains Cyra to harness and control her magic as a favor to Bressen. Change and enemies attack our group relentlessly shaking Cyra and Bressen’s relationship and testing loyalties. Bressen and Samhail have been my favorites so far but HELLO Axenus!!

This is the second book in this series, I recommend you read the first book in the series, The Last Triumvirate, before reading this book.

From the Prologue to the second epilogue, the author weaves an intriguing story of a former winemaker, who is discovered to be perhaps one of the most powerful being to walk the realm, uncovering mysteries that Cyra, her lover Bressen (the Nemesis incarnate) , and new and existing characters off in search of hidden secrets beneath the waves , while attempting to train her new found powers as well as navigating her upcoming nuptials, as well as defending the realm against mysterious attacks.

Those who read the first book will enjoy the new characters, with deep backstories, that have been weaved into the lives of the ones from the first book as the sharp and witty banter flows without losing a step. Moral discussions between the characters are deep and thought provoking.

For those who love the romance in the fantasy romance genre will not be disappointed as there is quite a bit more than the 1st book and the author has definitely kicked it up a notch.

McDermott's pacing is perfectly timed. On occasion I would think to myself about a certain person/plotline and would be pleasantly surprised to see it a page later. Overall this was an outstanding read, and based upon the teaser for book 3 I will be anxiously awaiting for the next in the series.

Of Wrath and Storms is the second book in The Last Triumvirate series and it was just as amazing as the first! The story of Bressen and Cyra continued from where we left off in book one. There were just as many twists and turns and definitely some surprise moments. Some of my favorite characters from book one make appearances and there were some new characters I fell in love with as well! There was great world building and story progression at a good pace. The spice was definitely spicing and it was perfectly written. I can’t wait for book three and to see what is going to happen next!

I loved this book!

Book 1 was terrific, and Book 2 maintains the great characters and pacing. Cyra and Bressen make a fabulous duo, and McDermott keeps the erotic energy of their early meetings as their relationship matures and develops.

I continue to love Samhail, and now also have another favorite male character in the merman Axenus. His back story is compelling and I can't wait to see how he develops throughout the series.

Super deep pscyhological insights combined with a million fast-paced twists and turns.

This is romantasy at its best! Can't wait for Book 3.

Political intrigue, romance, several very interesting characters to both love and hate, and the smut. It all comes together in a nice continuation from the first book. On to the third in the series.

🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️

The only thing “wrong” with this book, is that I have to wait for the 3rd book to come out. It is a great continuation of The Last Triumvirate storyline and character development. I look forward to reading more works by Ms. McDermott.
