When their passion ignites while undercover, the truth Ronni’s hiding puts their mission in jeopardy and tests their partnership. Can they learn to trust each other while deceiving the enemy? Or will their cunning foe lure them into a dark and deadly trap?
USA TODAY Bestselling Author Misty Evans is celebrating her 100th published novel in 2025. She loves writing urban fantasy, paranormal romance, and mystery/suspense. Under her pen name, Nyx Halliwell, she also writes supernatural cozy mysteries.
When not reading or writing (which is most of the time), she enjoys music, movies, and hanging out with her husband, twin sons, and three spoiled rescue dogs. She’s a crafter at heart and has far too many projects to finish.
No matter what genre she tackles, Misty Evans produces a winner. She is among a handful of authors whose romantic suspense novels stand apart and above the typical novels that I have read.
Her characters display strengths and weaknesses that make them feel real. Her plots carry twists that have me holding my breath and shouting “yes”, (Note, my poor husband just shakes his head when I have to verbalize my enjoyment or irritation over a book.) Her humor and as well as her wonderful character interaction balance the suspense and help me connect to the characters.
Ronni’s life in a cult ended in a traumatic battle between members of the cult and law enforcement officers led by the FBI. She has never recovered from the PTSD that resulted from the horror of that day, but she manages to hide it well enough to make it into the FBI. Now she is recovering from a stab in the back, a literal stab in the back, and once again is hiding the effects of a trauma from her bosses.
Now is not the perfect time to be sent in to investigate her half-brother’s cult, the baby brother that she saved from sure death in the attack on her step-father’s compound. It doesn’t help that the man sent in as her back-up was also supposed to be keeping an eye on things when she was stabbed, a man to whom she has always been drawn, but one who brings flashbacks of her more recent terror.
Once again please note that I give this books a 5 star recommendation. The 4 star rating is based on the fact that I have only read the book once. I think this one will move to a 5 with very little time.
I love Thomas, loved him in the book one, and I was looking forward to his story. He is funny, caring, protective, alpha male, with 'emo' side to him. His crazy nicknames, easygoing nature, and constant movie quotes make him entertaining character. His feelings of guilt from the past drives him to try being a superhero with a cape. Ronni carries her own baggage from her childhood, to the last ops, she was on, when she got stabbed. At times she comes off as delusional as Adam, when her childhood mixes with the reality of the new cult. The romance between Thomas and Ronni is fun, passionate, and true. That part I enjoyed most about the story. There's not much action in the book, but lots of undercover investigation, trying to figure out the crimes of the cult. Interesting insides into the everyday life of the cult, and the beliefs of the members. The story almost lost me at 45% mark, there was some repetition, and the storyline was just not moving forward. But overall an interesting read, and Thomas and Ronni deserve three big spoons with a little teaspoon on a side.
Another enjoyable book by Misty Evans. I read this one after I read the Christmas book. I enjoy Misty's writing and look forward to more SCVC TASKFORCE books along with the Rock Star series. Love reading how Ronni and Thomas solve crime.
This is the 2nd book of the series. I read one of the other series first. I would start with this series if I were a new reader.
If you want to read what the book is about, read above the reviews.
This book is based upon a group of alphabet agencies working together as teammates who fall in love while working cases. We have met our hero and heroine in the prior book. I would read this book before starting this one in order to understand the background history.
Our hero is guilty. The heroine was hurt on his watch and he’s having a hard time living with it. Now he gets a second chance if our heroine will let him. However, he wants more than to be just working together. His fantasies are starting to overlap with reality and that’s not good because in no way is the heroine getting hurt on his watch again.
Our heroine has been through hell and back. She was trying to protect her friend and ended up getting stabbed in the back. Now after working through most of her issues, it was time she got back on the job. However, dealing with her brother and their history was going to be something else altogether.
The plot is interesting as its dealing with cults, family history and guilt in various angles and ways throughout the story. If you read the prior book, the book starts with shock as the heroine is still alive. Then you have how much the heroine has changed since she got hurt, but it’s understandable. The hero, in some areas, gets very annoying but at the same time funny in some ways on how he uses the areas. Then to add in the heroine’s brother and what’s entitled there is very wacky but believable for those of us who remember the Waco stand and Jonestown poisoning. The ending is not what I expected.
Hmmm this one was different and yet you get to learn more about the group.
Deadly Deception is the second book in the SCVC Taskforce series and if you are a lover of romantic suspense then you must read these books. This is the story of Roanna or Ronni as she is called, an FBI agent who is suffering from PTSD after a brutal stabbing. She tries to convince people that she is fine, but I think she is trying to convince herself the most. She is called by the taskforce to help capture a cult leader and she will be working with the same team that she was working with when she got stabbed. DEA agent Thomas Mann already feels guilty about letting a killer get so close to Ronni, now he sets out to make sure that nothing happens to her this time. Will the secrets that Ronni is hiding end up with her getting hurt again, or will Thomas be able to save her? This book is loaded with romance, suspense, angst and hot alpha males, what else could you ask for?
Even though Roanna is physically fit unbeknown to anyone else mentally she’s not. When she’s asked to join the SCVC to investigate her brother, his followers and possible smuggling activities, Roanna agrees but she finds it difficult to keep her PTSD under wraps. She’s teamed up with Thomas Mann, the agent that was helping to guard her partner Celina from a Cartel boss when she was attacked and stabbed in the back. Thomas still feels the guilt of not protecting her and is determined to keep her safe this time. There’s a lot of twists and turns in Deadly Deception and I’m sure anyone will enjoy it as much as I did.

DEADLY DECEPTION Thomas was DEA and working undercover, with TaskForce. At the airport to take Ronni to a meeting, they were to be partners. She brought her evaluation about the Church of Truth, a cult religion. What the son Adam is going for is retaliation for the father, who they felt was the true messiah. Her brother, that why she was asked to be part of this Taskforce. Would he see her, would it only be the religion with him believing he is the Messiah. Will Ronni feel at home now and part of TaskForce to stay
I enjoyed the book for the most part... but I didn’t like Ronni. She was just such a whiny woman. Maybe that was by design of her kooky past.
I initially read the first book as part of a collection. A few years later, I started reading a spin-off series..which made me want to read about a couple who was in this series... so I ended up buying the series and starting from book two. 😂
I bought Deadly Deception by Misty Evan and this review was given freely. Thomas and Roanna team up professionally and personally in this full length romantic suspense where Roanna reunites with her cult leader brother. Compared to Deadly Pursuit, the romance portion was steamier, the crime less graphically depicted and overall there was less violence.
A different plot than usual. As much as I don't like religious stories generally, this one balanced the cult aspect evenly between bsc & respect for individual beliefs. Overall, very good.
In Deadly Deception by Misty Evans, FBI agent Roanna Punto ('Ronni') has been slowly recovering after a brutal injury on the job. She is now ready to be back at work, and put those events behind her. Ronni has always kept a big part of herself hidden though, and now she's also hiding the pain, fear, and mistrust that remains after her injury.
When she is summoned to San Diego, she is partnered with DEA agent Thomas Mann. The same Thomas who was working with Ronni at the time she was attacked, Thomas who harbors incredible guilt that he was supposed to be protecting Ronni but in his mind he failed. Irrationally attracted to Thomas, Ronni is determined to keep things professional between them. Although she claims she doesn't blame him for the attack and her injury, her actions and lack of trust say differently. This op will test their trust and togetherness.
Their assignment is to infiltrate Heaven's Gate cult and bring down the cult leader. But Ronni's past is catching up to her and the last of her secrets are revealed. The cult leader (Adam) is the half brother she saved once, years ago when a raid on a cult by the FBI took many lives. A time in her life that she's never recovered from, Ronni is still emotionally scarred. Between flashbacks, a developing relationship with Thomas, and increasing danger, will Ronni save Adam again or will the evidence against Adam be too much? The heat of the job and the heat between Thomas and Ronni is enough to singe your fingers on the pages of Deadly Deception as not only does their relationship grow, but so does the mystery of what is happening with the cult.
Misty gives us realistic characters with relate-able emotions in Deadly Deceptions. Thomas is funny to Ronni's serious, but you can feel the click between them even before they do! Ronni has been through so much in her life, it is easy to feel for her. She is conflicted, slow to trust, but at the same time her heart shines through.
Misty writes Deadly Deception with great flow, and seamless transitions between romance and suspenseful action, making Deadly Deception and easy book to fall into. Misty gives us lots of plot twists you don't see coming, she keeps you guessing and catches you off guard. I love all of the secondary characters in Deadly Deception. In particular, Ronni's brother Adam plays a big role. He is a strong secondary character who adds a lot of depth to the story.
I loved how Misty wrote both the cult aspect - the good and the bad to give the reader a good understanding of cult life. She also writes about mental illness, and brings that out into the open. She certainly did not shy away from any issues in Deadly Deception and I loved this!
Deadly Deception is book 2 in this series, but can definitely be read as a stand alone. I'd highly recommend Deadly Deception by Misty Evans to any romantic suspense reader looking for a very well written book! I will be waiting impatiently for Misty's next book!
Deadly Deception is the second book in this series. At the opening, we learn that Ronni was involved in a violent stabbing and is just returning to work. Thomas worked with her previously and was involved in the case where she was injured. They are being paired together to determine what is going on in a cult. We discover that Ronni was raised in a cult like environment along with her brother Adam whom she hasn’t seen since he was three. She led him to safety when her mother and step father were killed in a cult uprising. Adam, now, is the chosen one leading the cult that she is investigating. We are taken through an emotional roller coaster as Ronni and Adam deal with the past and the present. As the story develops we are led down one path only to be taken down another as we discover who is truly behind the happenings on the farm. We are also treated with the slow but steady development of Ronni and Thomas’ relationship. If you enjoy romance and intrigue this is the book for you. I would highly recommend it. I would like to disclose that I received a copy of Deadly Deception in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Ronni Punto is FBI but according to her partner, Thomas Mann, that means Fabulous But Irritating. She is to work with the SCVC taskforce. Her job is to go undercover and investigate her brother, Adam Karsni, and his cult. When she and Thomas go to Heaven's Gate Farm, they find things are not what they seem. Ronni is struggling with her past. To often death and tragedy have been her companion. Can she let go of the trauma? Is the attraction to Thomas a way for her to escape or do they have a future? Misty Evans has written an exhilarating adventure filled with amazing characters, danger and intrigue. Ronni is strong, compassionate and haunted. Thomas cares for her deeply, but he feels guilty that she was critically injured during a previous case. I love the way their relationship developed. You could feel the caring and love grow as the worked together. I laughed at Thomas and his nicknames. The secondary characters added so much depth to the story. This action packed novel is filled with such surprising twists. What a remarkable ending! Deadly Deception has it all - love, forgiveness and healing.
DEADLY DECEPTION is an incredibly well written and driven story about an FBI agent who has hidden her private agony and anguish and must resolve the painful issues of her past and replace her vulnerability with strength in order to trust again.
Her partner for this current assignment is a DEA agent who is struggling with guilt because when they were last partnered together Ronni was stabbed and Thomas was not able to prevent the assault. They haven’t worked together since.
The tumultuous roller coaster of emotions, passion, action and suspense will keep you on the edge of your seat! I could not put the book down. The plot twists just kept coming, the hot romance increased layer by layer and I loved it! I highly recommend reading this book.
I was provided the opportunity to read this book and share my honest opinion with other readers. It is with great respect for the author and story, as well as my pleasure as a reader, to rate DEADLY DECEPTION five stars. Read it!!
Short review. Griping story from the first page to the last, characters are interesting, romance and mystery are well balance it never feels like there is too much of either.
This was a great story with many surprises and twists! I really liked that Misty Evans let her readers choose the cult aspect of the book. She did a wonderful job with it, and the many characters that were a part of the cult. I also liked how well the characters' lives were intertwined. I really don't want to give anything away, but I was very curious throughout this whole book. While reading it, I figured one of the characters was going to end up with one heck of a mess in the aftermath, but Misty Evans did a marvelous job! The ending was phenomenal, and I never saw it coming. Ronni and Thomas were fun to read. While Ronni seemed very serious and under a lot of stress, Thomas' humor and easy-going nature balanced it out very well. There was a lot of good suspense, and a lot of great romance and chemistry in this book. Plus, it was nice to see Cooper and Celina again! Great book in another great series!
This is a great book, this is the second book in this series, but can be read as a stand alone. This book is about Roanna (Ronni), who is an FBI agent and she just got assigned to a new case. This is her first case since she was brutally stabbed. She is sent to San Diego to work with the same task force that she was working with when she got stabbed. She has to go undercover with agent Thomas Mann to try to prove that a cult leader is hiding weapons. Thomas is trying to get over his guilt from letting the killer get close enough to hurt Ronni. This book has it all, romance, mystery, suspense, and hot alpha agents. A Review copy was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.
Not a bad story here. The action is interesting, as is the love story. I found this one to be a little more realistic than the first SCVC Taskforce story. I liked that Ronni was honest enough (finally) to admit that she had struggles with her childhood and that she might need help. Overall, Ronni and Thomas are a cute couple but there are still rumblings of something wrong on the taskforce world. Kudos also for kind of ignoring the interracial aspect of the romance.
By the way, what is up with the spell-check in these books? I counted at leat three times where the author used the word "tilted" and it was spelled "titled" in the story. Nice words, but not interchangeable. Any possibility that this was proof-read at all?
Intrigue, anxiety, confusion plus sexual attraction and you have a fantastic book. This story is an exceptional read that is full of suspense and has lots of interesting, well defined characters. Ronni struggles with childhood flashbacks; Thomas has quilt issues from a previous case. Together they must overcome their problems and work as partners to infiltrate Heavens Gate. The story moves along smoothly and keeps you interested from beginning to end. Enjoyed it very much.
Very interesting concept, built around a cult and events that happened not only today but years ago. I am old enough to remember most of the events that were woven throughout but not named specifically. I found the psychology sound and very interesting. This is not what I would call a happy book, but it is extremely well written and I LOVED it!!!!
I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
Great read. Liked the twists and turns. But I did guess who dun it. It may be because as a teeenager I read Victoria Holt and she taught me to look for the most innocent and unlikely person to be the guilty party. I still was able to truly enjoy this book. I like that Misty Evans explores a variety of settings for each story. She also builds a wonderful and teasing HEA. The romance adventure is awesome.
I got the chance to read an early copy of this book from the author and found it just as intriguing and engaging as the first in the series. Misty stepped up the hot factor a bit in this one and totally nailed it (no pun intended - ha). As with all her other stories, the plot was original and it was engaging from the beginning.
Thomas and Ronni make a great team as partners. Investigating Heavens Gate I church, Ronnie's brother Adam runs, Ronni has to fight her own demons to figure out if her brother is a criminal, delusional or just her brother. Of course there are twist and turns and romance too.
Typical predictable and u can figure out who the culprits are early in the book. And then the rest of it was slow.. And waiting for the so called FBI agent to figure it out. It was pAinful to get through.
3.5 stars I liked the characters, the dialogue, and the plot. It was a really good read. But, it lacked that special something to make it great. I liked the ending and the resolution with Roanna and Adam. I might need to read it again.
Really enjoyed this book - great suspense and the whole cult investigation gave it a really unique storyline. Loving this series. Reading Deadly Force next!
"Better to live one day as a lion, than a hundred as a lamb."
I love the story of Roanna & Thomas! It was good to see Thomas get over Celina. I enjoyed their love story as well as Ronnie finding her brother and clearing him of any wrongdoing. I always love Cooper Harris and his taskforce. I would highly recommend this book as well as the series.
Ronni has to investigate her brother with the help of Thomas who has been I love with her since the case where she was stabbed - can they work the case and not fall more in love with one another and continue working together after this case is over as partners.
The majority of this book happened in an undercover operation in a cult. It was interesting to see the psychology of the cult but it got a bit tedious. But the main characters were great as always in this series.
