As the youngest daughter of a respectable gentry family, my life has been laid out before me, beginning and ending with marriage. But in my very first Season, my innocence is stolen and I am left ruined in every sense of the word.
And the last place I expect to find any peace, both from my attacker and my crumbling mental state, is with my neighbor and childhood friend, Henry Pembrooke. Especially when our paths cross again so many years later in the most unlikely of places.
Elizabeth is a (mostly!) dark romance author, a trope aficionado, a Mary Sue stan, a beanie baby hoarder, a single mom, pure chaotic evil, and a pitch wars alum who looks like a cinnamon roll but could kill you.
She specializes in spicy disasters, enemies to lovers, tragic backstories, grumpy villains falling for sunshine heroes too good for this world, bad boys and girls reformed by the power of love, arranged marriages, fake relationships, and second chances.
In her ridiculously limited free time, Elizabeth enjoys playing board games, experimenting in the kitchen, and trying desperately to cuddle her two demon kitties.
Thanks to BookSirens for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion...
Content warning... this story contains murder/violence, and graphic sex, and is NOT a typical historical romance. I got Natural Born Killer vibes off of it, without the killing spree, psychotic break chaos, tempered by Regency social norms, and gentility.
I really wasn't sure what to think about it at first, but in the end, I was drawn to the characters with their dark, twisty personalities and motivations, and how they complemented each other's darkness. Despite the darkness and how they each express it, it still seems they are veering on the chaotic good side of things (sorry, that is my nerdy former teenage self having a moment here).
Amelia was raised in a socially prominent gentry family, but during her Season, her innocence is wrested from her by an assault. Things are kept under wraps and she is sent away to recuperate, and no word of what she has suffered has leaked out to sully her reputation. But she is forever changed, and returns a changed person. She is lost and aimless, until she determines she wants revenge on her attacker and to make him suffer.
She goes about this without a plan, and ends up at a notorious secret club and brothel. There, she is discovered by her childhood friend, Henry, who turns out to be the hidden owner of the brothel. Henry is a Viscount, inheriting the title after the death of his father. But the family fortunes and reputation are in ruins, and Henry worked hard to restore both. Thanks to his family's friendship with Amelia's family, they have some repair to their place in society, and his secret business deals have helped shore up their finances. Henry never expected to step out of his office to find his childhood friend, Amelia in the halls.
But when he finds out about Amelia's assault and her purpose behind her actions, Henry reveals another secret - he is a cold hearted killer, and in love with Amelia. He seeks her revenge for her, and this starts them down a dangerous path together.
This is a dark twisted drama, thriller, dark romance, that is also a childhood friends becoming lovers story, that sees the two become lovers as they seek vigilante justice first against Amelia's attacker, and then others who have done wrong to women in the Ton. It is an oddly compelling story that is oddly warm hearted at times, but ultimately about two people who find joy in their actions - and I am not talking about the open door love scenes.
I am intrigued and there are hints of even more hidden depths to Henry and their family's past and connections hinted at as well. It is like a psychological thriller movie - you are aghast at the violence, and you know there will be blood, gore, and things you don't really want to see, but the story is compelling enough you cannot look away, and have to know the end of the story.
So yes - Natural Born Killers in Regency times, with gentility, elegance, minus the spree killing chaos, and a childhood friends to lovers romance with an HEA.
It's like a bowl of Mom's fried rice - so many bits and pieces that sometimes may not seem like they belong together, but put them in the wok, fry them up and out comes something yummy that I am happy to devour.
I received this from Hype Girls PA in exchange for my honest opinion.
Amelia was raised to be the perfect daughter. All her life she knew marriage was her purpose, but her very first season, she gets ruined by her childhood friend Henry….
This book had me at the edge of my seat dying to know where the story was going.
Includes - childhood friends to lovers - Dark romance/regency - Age gap - Revenge - Spicy - Neighbors
Amelia, raised to be perfect, the eldest daughter of a respectable gentry family had her life meticulously planned, centred around marriage. However, during her very first Season, her innocence was stolen, leaving her ruined in every sense.
Unexpectedly, the person who offers her solace from her attacker and her crumbling mental state is her neighbour and childhood friend, Henry Pembrooke. Their paths cross again many years later, in the most unlikely of places, his brothel.
This was definitely unexpected. I didn't think I would be so captivated by the book. Amelia and Henry are surprisingly a sweet couple. Considering what they do at night, everything that happens, and how he actually saved her—wow. From the beginning, the book is fast-paced; it was great how Henry acted as soon as he saw Amelia in his brothel. I really liked the "touch her and die" trope, and it was literal—he avenged everything, very protective, very sexy, phew.
Both of them are interesting characters. They develop throughout the entire book and are inseparable. I also really liked that they view their relationship as equal.
The book is really entertaining; it has teasing, spicy scenes, and after all, it is a dark romance. It's sweet how they are both in love, don't want to admit it, but it's great that it's explained why since we have a dual pov. I definitely recommend this book, even though some parts are a bit twisted. Be sure to read the triggers listed at the very beginning, but I'm sure you'll like it.
*Thank you to BookSirens, to the author, Elizabeth Muse, for providing me with this e-copy in exchange for an honest review.*
I must admit that historical romances just weren’t my ‘thing’, but then I watched Bridgerton. After that and a couple other historical reads, I am beginning to really enjoy this ‘new to me’ genre.
With that said, I had high hopes for Devil Like Me. In the beginning, we are introduced to Lady Amelia Hayward and Lord Henry Pembrooke who are neighbors and childhood friends. Both have suffered tragedies in their lives and through this they have reconnected as adults.
This book is FULL of surprises, but I did have a hard time getting into the storyline in the beginning. There were some plot points that I was trying to anticipate rather than just sit back and read. Unfortunately, there were some scenes that could’ve been beneficial if some plot points were expanded. Devil Like Me was a rather enjoyable read and I will say that I never expected where this story would take me.
I loved it! It's actually the first time i read a book with the dark regency trope and I'm so intrigued by it!
Tropes in this book:
• Dark Regency • AGE GAP (has me on chokehold ❤️🔥) • Childhood Friends to Lovers • Neighbors
The age gap, the revenge the MCs plotting, the Bonnie and Clyde vibes, the high society touches and SPICEEEEE are so freaking incredible!!!
The light kinks, the banter and the badass FMC have my heart!!!
Henry my man, omg i need one just like him, the "touch her and you die" character trait is so obvious on him from the very beginning and i love that for him!
That's the first book i read by Elizabeth but I'm so excited to read more from her!!!
3.5 bridgerton is currently my favorite show and this is literally that but a dark romance, it’s so entertaining and i ended up reading it in one sitting. it’s a pretty short book, but i feel like it’s pretty well paced, i loved the main character and for some reason i pictured her as daphne. i quite literally will read anything from this time period after how much i loved bridgerton, if you want something that is fast paced and easy to read, definitely pick this up. ESPECIALLY after watching season 3 of bridgerton.
this was so much fun!!! I was a little lost as to where the plot was going in the beginning but it got so interesting!! This is a really creative idea for a story and I think it was executed well :) if i could change anything it would be to add more context in the beginning to build tension and build a stronger foundation for the story.
3.75/5⭐️ I really enjoyed this one! The tropes included: age gap, dark regency era, and childhood friends to lovers! It was a super fast paced, spicy book and I really liked how it jumped right in to Henry and Amelia’s story! Perfect if you are looking for a short, spicy, and fast paced read!
Thank you to Elizabeth, Sylvia, and Hype Girls PA for the eARC for this book!!
This is a regency romance with triggers. Amelia has been ruined, however, with the quick work of her father and brother, no one but family knows. After a long time of dealing with it, she finally decides what she wants to do- revenge on the monster that did this to her. Her neighbor is Viscount, Lord Henry Pembrooke and he is now in charge. His mother is dealing with the death of his father and is devastated. Edmund is his trusted advisor and right hand. His brothers, James and Nicholas show up and are arguing. I laughed a lot over them throughout the book. Henry is amazing, and you’ll see why. I’m a bit freaked out by the ending but the book was totally awesome! The fights and the empowerment of Amelia thru Henry is just shocking. The romance in the book is steamy and some of it was just hilarious. I love Amelia’s father and mother. They are very different for that time, even if they were an arranged marriage. I was fascinated by the hidden world in the book and how Henry handles everything. I wish there was more of Amelia’s siblings, Caroline and Thomas. I felt that they’re not in it enough. I wanted more about them. I can’t wait to see if the author has any more books in this series.

I was sold at dark regency romance! I've never thought about those two combines, but this book definitely blew any expectations out of the park. Absolutely adored it!!!
Amelia was raised to be the perfect daughter, wife, and all of the above. Then disaster struck during the end of her first Season, she was whisked away to the countryside. Now she's back with vengeance in mind for the one who "ruined" her. But when she unexpectedly crosses paths with her childhood friend and neighbor, Henry Pembrooke, her plans changed.
This read had me at the edge of my seat, especially nearing the end. The twists had me second-guessing if they had their HEA, and it made me so happy when they did! I wish I had a bit more of their post, honeymoon, though! Overall, this was an amazing read, especially with all the regency romance stuff happening 🩷
I received this book as an ARC, and this is my honest review.
Okay… Dark romance meets Regency. I am love all sorts of intersections with histrom. This is no exception. It's my first dark histrom and I kind of love it. Which makes me question myself but oh then there is the mystery of it all. It was hot and sexy, and don't think about anything too closely, just feel the yearning of both parties and yell at them to get together already!! The chemistry between Amelia and Henry is so good, I couldn't wait until they got together again. I'd say their spicy scenes weren't always as graphic but it happened enough that I was satisfied with it. And the air of mystery around other things too is one I want to dig into further!
I can't wait for the other books in the series to come out. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I had never read a dark regency romance, but I absolutely devoured this! Henry’s utter devotion to this woman is unmatched 🙌 It is spicy and thrilling all within the drama of London’s high society.
In her first season, Amelia is wholly ruined and seeks revenge. What she doesn’t expect is to cross paths with her childhood friend and neighbor, Henry Pembrooke, in such a place as his brothel. Though Henry tries to shield Amelia from his darker impulses, his angel proves she doesn’t seek the light.
“When she wanted something, she took it. I had just never thought to dream that I might one day be the thing she wanted.”

Get ready for something completely different – it’s Dexter meets Victorian England! Observing all proprieties and social niceties by day, doing very much the OPPOSITE by night – Miss Amelia Haywood and longtime neighbour and childhood friend Henry, Lord Pembrooke, realize they have a very specific interest in common after Amelia experiences a traumatic assault. Emerging from a deep depression upon her return to town, Amelia finds renewed purpose when she decides to take revenge into her own hands. And those hands are ably helped by Henry!
This was such an original idea, well executed (pun intended!), at times sweet and definitely spicy! I’m looking forward to learning more about how these two families have been working together over the years!
I've read a lot of Regency era books, and a fair share of dark romance, but I've never read a combination of the two. Honestly, I was a bit worried about the dark romance element, because sometimes authors can be excessive with it.. but this was done so well. It was so refreshing to change things up a bit.
I expected a bit of a drag once I learned some of the twists, but the pacing was excellent! As for the characters, I liked both of them, especially in that there's no hesitation about who they are and they see/understand each other so well.
I'm very excited after the epilogue to read more about their journey, eek!

A curiously quaint, oddly original, delightful historical romance.
Amelia, ruined by Phillip Beauchamp, wants revenge. Henry Pembroke, her long time admirer, helps Amelia achieve said revenge, and dispose of the body after. However, the thrill of the kill also unleashes a side to Amelia that is not normal in any society, but Henry, business man and brothel owner also has a few quirks that only Amelia can satisfy. Together they are a formidable pair, except neither want to commit to a future together. Or do they?
This is an interesting and intriguing story. Both MCs are relatable, the story pace well suited, the concept a bit macabre, but overall sensitively told. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
I received this book as an arc and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
This is not your normal historical regency romance. It is full of darkness, the abuses of men against women, vigilante justice, brothels and poverty and gentry. The storyline is intensely unique and well worth the read. The MC's are devilishly enticing and slip their way into your heart and you will not be able to put this book down. The secondary characters play a big part in this story flowing well. The story has a very dark subject and may involve triggers for some so beware. I throughly loved how Amelia was able to voice to Henry what had happened to her and he believed in her thoughts of how to make sure it never happened again. These two are perfect for each other as they see themselves has outside of their class. I truly enjoyed every page of this book.
I found this highly entertaining. The revenge and vigilante justice against ruthless men using their brute strength and powers over women and those disadvantaged and weaker than them was dealt with by this brilliant duo. Henry and Amelia's families had a much longer, deeper , and darker conjoined history, and I found it very enterprising and ingenious. I thought it was highly amusing how eager these two were to cut their honeymoon short to "return to work " , and help their friends in trouble. Lol. Some dark humor I greatly enjoyed. I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest opinion.
Dexter, in a historical setting, makes this an interesting read. Amelia and Henry are just crazy enough to make a good match.
Amelia seeks revenge on the man who violated her. And finds her target in her childhood friend Henry's brothel. He is crazed that she has been hurt and kills for her. Henry is a vigilante and punishes men who violate women. Amelia starts bringing him "cases," and together, they bury bodies. In the meantime, the feelings that they had simmering for many years comes to the surface, and they get physically and emotionally involved. A final climax involves a kidnapping, killing spree and wedding.
Phew, this book was hot, dark, and dangerous at points, but so hot!!!!!
A historical romance with a twist. Not your usual period drama. Amelia meets Viscount Henry and from this point on emotions run high. The two's passion for each other grows quickly. Amelia had a sexual assault happen to her previously and she'd love nothing more than revenge. Henry abliges and its not long before together they are murdering others that are not nice people such as wife beaters. There is a bit of spice but I found the book not as I thought it would perhaps be. It didnt grab my attention. I found it hard to keep reading on. Some of the conversations between the lovers was abit cringey.
Henry and Amelia were very entertaining characters! Twisted with a big drop of lust they really shake up the evening.
Sometimes I had to remember I was reading a romance! No, not because it wasnt romantic- it was most definitely, lusty might be a better word also but it was the nights activites and their shared 'hobby' that made me ogle the page! haha
Contains: age gap, dark regency era, and childhood friends to lovers! A perfect read if you are looking for a historical romance with a twist. A short, spicy, and fast paced read!

Blurb.. As a lady you should be innocent. But that was stolen from me. One night as I followed him the man who stole from me. I run into Henry the man I’ve been in love with since I was a child. Little did I know he wanted the same as I did. Revenge.
Review I liked this book! Im not a big fan of time settings of it. But other than that it was amazing. Henry loves her so much and he’s willing to do anything! Amelia is a bad b***h and know exactly what she wasn’t! And k**ls all men who has ever harmed women! And the best part is Henry HELPS!!!! I 100% percent recommend!!!
- Dark Regency - Age Gap - Childhood Friends to Lovers - REVENGE
The banter in this book! The tension! Henry and Amelia are just amazing overall. It's a nice, fast-paced, short read. Very Spicy, for those looking for a spicy dark historical romance. And Chapter 28 was just so freaking cute, I loved it.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.I usually avoid reading books in 1st person but since I had downloaded in booksirens I became curious to read the contents .This was the first book of madam Elizabeth Muse I read .it was unique. I enjoyed reading till the last. The story was exceptional with both the hero and heroine taking revenge against the sexual exploiters.
This book captivated me with its original characters, Amelia and Henry, who have some dark side personalities. I gradually fell for these two. This novella has a fascinating plot with many surprising twists and turns, twisted parts, and spicy scenes. It’s a gripping dark romance novella. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
There are very few dark historical romances. I was extremely happy to read another book in this genre. The plot was nicely done. Character development was done well in that the reader understood what made the hero act the way he did. He was properly redeemed at the end. If you, like me, love dark historical romance novels, you don't want to miss this. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This book was fun… did I expect that this would be my first read of the year? No. But it was a really fun read! I love how much Henry loves Amelia, and I love that she holds the same darkness within her that he does. It makes it feel more like they’re on equal footing than many of the dark romances I’ve read over the last year. There were some little writing style choices that I didn’t love, but the story was enjoyable and in the end, I would definitely read it again!
had me sold at dark ; def had me sucked in with the age gap, the revenge, the spice and the background mixed in with ALL that good plot. And heres the thing - the plot, solid - the banter and the tension? ICING ON THE M-EFFING CAKE! I usually dont do historical styles except for one or two authors ... but now, i have added another one! Cant wait for the book 2!
What a book! I loved the main characters and how much they have in common! The plot was very nice and I would come back to this book again and again in between blocks. The 4 stars is because there's a lack of detail in the scenes but I still enjoyed the fast read!
