Awesome book! I was so happy that I got the chance to read this book. It's true: it isn't long, but that doesn't matter. A book isn't valued after its length, cover or perhaps not even after its title. The book starts with describing one's identity, which is very essential. When you realize who you are then it doesn't matter what others think about you, because you are living for an audience of One...the One: God! It's interesting that pleasing God often results in pleasing people because someone is more pleasant to be around, more kind, more giving and more loving. After seeing yourself as God sees you, you're freed up from striving and you begin to simply enjoy His Presence. He's Presence is what everybody wants, not results. Results happen in the Presence! In the second chapter Mrs. Shorter spoke about being great and how to do that through love and service. I really liked how she spoke about her experiences and said "Love sacrificially. Love until it hurts." The perfect combination is service and love. As she covered identity, love and service in the first two chapters, she went on to write about prophetic ministry, intercession and creativity, for which those are the foundation. She answered questions related to prophetic ministry, like: 'How do I know it's God speaking?' 'Who can prophecy?' 'What are the characteristics of a good prophecy?' etc. What I most liked is that she included her own experiences and was speaking directly to my heart, because I was on the same wavelength.
The best part was when she described intercession and how God spoke to her about it (it was similar to my experience). I'll quote it here because I want to remember it whenever I see this book: "God said to me, 'Carry the people on your list in your heart. Give me your heart, and I will take care of the rest.' Oh, what a relief! I no longer had to pray for every person on my list. Instead, I connected with God heart to heart. He could read my heart and answer in better ways than I could dream to ask! He is so good!" We aren't beggars trying to get God to do something, but we're His children and we have access to everything He is. Isn't that just awe-inspiring? We can do things that attract God, bring answers to prayer and invite encounters with Him.
After every chapter there were some great activation ideas, asking you to speak with your heavenly Father.
The best way to end the book is by these words, Allison Shorter used: "God is so worth it. Enjoy your adventure with Him!"
Allison takes out the stress and pressure out of partnering with God and shows how this partnership can be simple, fun, and creative. As she says, “Because God is fun, partnering with Him can be fun. Many Christians want to love God and others well but get tired along the way. The good news is… Partnering with God doesn’t have to be burdensome or make you weary! Jesus said that his ‘burden is light,’ so if we are feeling heavy, He has the answer regarding how to bring lightness to our life and work.”
Even if you are not an intercessor, Allison’s chapters on identity and the way to be great is really a must read for all.
You took the bore and dread out of intercession. I recently started dancing and I really enjoy it. But now I can add it into my prayer time. This is great!
