One of my students is a huge fan of Big Nate, and when he bought it at our recent book fair, and read it in one day, I knew I had to read it as well. What a fun, fun book! And I loved the emphasis put on both creativity and teamwork in this book in the Big Nate series. A great addition to our library!
Nate Wright is about to have the biggest blast when he hears that his school, P.S. 38, is going to close down for a short notice. This means that he gets to mingle with friends, relax and enjoy drawing comics galore! But, all that changes when P.S. 38 announces that studies will continue in Jefferson, the mortal enemy of P.S. 38. The thing is, P.S. 38 hasn't beaten Jefferson in ANYTHING, so Nate and his gang are ready for a thrashing. But all that changes when the find Jefferson's 'Achilles' Heel' and use it against them in the upcoming snow sculpture contest. Will P.S. 38 finally beat Jefferson, or will they still remain the total underdog. Find out in Big Nate Goes for Broke by Lincoln Peirce, a story about comedy, courage and rising up.
This is the second Big Nate book I've read and I just love these books so much. This book mainly talked about Nate's school's students competing against the Jefferson's school. The Jefferson school is the life long winner and Nate's school is a total loser. I liked this book because it tells us a moral: there are never total winners, everyone have a weakness. This tells us this life lesson, that could help us manage our feelings when we get frustrated, when we lose or when we met their kind of situation.
This book was awesome. It has so much humor in this book. It includes a kid named Nate, who's just like me, in middles school, and gets into some trouble. Nates school has a gas leak, so they have to go to their rival school, and stay there for the rest of the trimester. So, will Nate be able to keep it together for the remainder of the trimester? Also, my favorite part is when they do a snowman building competition and they find that Jefferson Middle School cheated, and they finally defeated the Jefferson Eagles.
In this fourth entry, Nate breaks his arm just after the kids of P.S. 38 are forced to attend Jefferson Middle School; their arch-rival, after water damage to their school. He breaks it while trying to help another student, Chad, who is dealing with the premiere bully of Jefferson.
Introduced in this book is Dee-Dee, artist and drama student. She quickly becomes a friend to Nate and his group and proves valuable to their efforts to bring down Jefferson's winning streak when it comes to the school rivalry.
By the end, Nate and P.S. 38 come out on top because Nate figures out that while they can't beat Jefferson, they can let their rivals beat themselves. It's a fun lesson and a decent little bit of history and mythology about the Trojan War and Achilles.
Highly recommended for Fans of Nate and his crew and other YA illustrated literature.
This book is very addicting, it's very hard to get off. It's a good book to enjoy and it also has some comic parts to it. Nate does everything odd in the book. Nate's archenemy (Gina) is trying to edit the yearbook but he thought she would make everything about herself some he told his friend (Francis) to be the Co-editor and do stuff to stop her from taking over, this book can be found in Sora. Superpro book, must-read ;).
Big Nate Goes for Broke by Lincoln Pierce is a story about big Nate and his friends had a snow day and is trying to have the best snow day ever but turns on them. at the school dance the sprinkler system went of and they went home. The next morning Nate, Teddy, and Francis where sledding on Teddy’s new tube when the despised rivals Jefferson came and popped Teddy’s new tube. so the decided to go to nates house. On there way back they saw construction workers at their school. They said “what's going on here”. The man turned around the water sprinklers system ruined everything and got everything wet and moldy so we have to close PS 38 for a while. the boys screamed with joy and rushed to Nates house. they were planning on meeting the Jefferson at the bus stop and say have fun at school and play all day and have the best week ever. Nate yelled at his dad “DAD DAD GUESS WHAT SCHOOLS CLOSED FOR A WHOLE WEEK”. His dad says I know you're principle sent and email and Jefferson. Nate stopped his dad ugh I don't want to talk about Jefferson. His dad say OK you but you may want to read the email. so Francis starts reading. yes school is closed for a while but we will not miss work. Nate says miss any work what teddy scrolled down they all read NO WE HAVE TO GO TO JEFFERSON SCHOOL FOR A WEEK AH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The title of the book I finished reading was Big Nate: Goes For Broke. The author of this book is Lincoln Peirce. It is a fictional book and has 216 pages.
The Main Characters are Nate, Dee Dee, Francis, Teddy and the Jefferson Middle School students.
The book is about a boy named Nate, who complains that the Jefferson students always win everything, which is proved by the fact that Jefferson won at everything against Nate's school, P.S. 38 for the last few years. Dee Dee says no one truly wins everything, and that everybody has a weakness. It is easier said than done, as Nate's friends try to look for Jefferson Middle School's weakness. Will they find it?
To find out more, read the book.
I would recommend this book for people who like cartoon books like the Diary of a Wimpy Kid, for example. Thank you for reading!
I read the book Big Nate, Goes for Broke. It’s a funny fictional book, it is like a comic novel. The main setting of the book is at PS.38 Elementary, and at Jefferson High School. Some of the main characters are Nate, Teddy, Chad Francis, Dee Dee, and Mrs. Godfrey. Most of the conflict is between the schools, PS.38 vs. Jefferson. The kids from PS.38 vow to beat Jefferson at anything they can. I thought the book was good, and also very funny. But the book didn’t have a purpose, but it was funny. There was no information, power, or persuasive factors in the book, but it encourages to never give up. Overall it was a good, entertaining, and funny book. I would recommend this book to just about all kids under 7th grade, unless you haven't been reading enough recently, and need to finish a book in a short amount of time for some reason.
I remembered this being the best Big Nate book, and it is. Nate breaks his harm in the middle of this, and so the Lincoln Peirce does some cool synthesis with the drawing of other characters in order to keep this book moving. I think the way he combines writing, illustrations of the world, Nate's cartoons, and other in-world drawings is pretty impressive. He manages to fit all those things in a very short story, and it still manages to keep a smooth stream-of-consciousness feel.
I'm reading this and other books to break up reading a massive Don DeLilloDon DeLillo novel.
this book is even funnier than i remember from my childhood. i literally laughed out loud multiple times. this book is better than 90% of books I've read this year ngl. short and funny and cute and sweet. read it in 1 sitting and loved every single second. these books deserve diary of a wimpy kid level hype. (also i am so brain rotted but reading this as an adult nate and deedee are so enemies to lovers LOL. i remember loving deedee smmmm as a kid bc she looked like me and talks a lot like me and ugh i love her so much more now)
i liked this book because Nate is enraged to find out Jefferson is better than them. Later in the book, he goes to a dance. Trouble starts when the fire alarm goes off. The school is closed and the kids
My thoughts on the book big nate goes for broke are that he has all of this terrrible luck and is very amusing to read. He is so scared of what will happen on his way to baseball practice. I felt scared for him because he almost fell off a bridge. He also tries to go for a record.

After having an introduction book that was pretty basic, yet still enjoyable for what it was, along with a second book that blew the first one out of the water in just about every way, the Big Nate series managed to put out a third book which, in comparison to the one that had just come out just before that one, it was good…… but not quite up to par. There was nothing particularly wrong with it, it just didn't manage to reach the same heights as the last book and wasn’t as entertaining, but regardless of that, it still turned out to be yet another solid entry in the Big Nate series, giving us yet another fun and entertaining story that was also more focused then the last one too, which was good to see, the same really good set of characters paired with some pretty good writing, the same great art that goes well with the universe and the original comic it was based on, and the humor was pretty decent too, even if it didn’t manage to get any laughs out of me at any point. So it was clear that, despite hitting a little bump in the road, this series was still going as strong as every, so naturally, Lincoln thought he might as well keep the ball rolling with the release of the fourth book in the series, Big Nate: Goes for Broke.
As you could probably guess at this point, this was yet another book in the series that I read as a kid, and it's also one of the ones that I remembered the most out of all of the Big Nate books I read as a kid. I don’t know if I considered it to be my favorite one of the ones that I read back then, but I definitely remembered the plot, about how Nate and his friends are forced to go to their rival school and face them down in order to prove they were better than them, which I remember loving back when I first read it, as I am a bigger fan of rivalry stories like that than some others. But of course, like with all of the other books I have reviewed so far, I hadn’t read that book in a really long time, so I didn’t know if the story was quite as great as I remember it being back then, or even if I was going to like it as much now as I did back then. Of course though, this was still Big Nate we were talking about, which means that it was probably still gonna be as good as I remember it being, and thankfully, that did turn out to be the case!........ kind of. I wouldn't say that it is my favorite book of the bunch, as I once again run into the issue of me not enjoying this as much as what came before, because I’m a needy little shit, but I would still consider it to definitely be one of the best in the series so far, giving us yet another fun and exciting story that manages to shake things up quite a bit from the last books, while keeping the core of the series intact to make for yet another solid tale through and through.
The story is definitely the most “ambitious” in the series so far, having the most characters involved with the central conflict so far rather than just being Nate and somebody else, and bringing the kids to all new locations and scenarios that were interesting to see, making for yet another very solid tale to add to the rest of them, even if it wasn’t quite as strongly put-together as others, the characters are still pretty good, with all of the returning characters acting just like how you would expect them too, and in terms of the new characters, Dee Dee is a great addition to the crew, definitely being one of the most entertaining of the bunch, and as for the Jefferson kids……. I mean, they are just typical bully characters, but they were fine enough, I suppose, the writing is still pretty good, giving us that same sarcastic and snarky dialogue from Nate’s perspective that still works very well, even if there are some parts here or there that make me cringe more then smile, the art is still pretty good, not really changing at all compared to the previous books, but it still works, so not much more to say about that, and the humor is good too, where there was nothing here that made me laugh out loud or chuckle, but there was enough food material here that kept me smiling from start to finish, which is what matters most at the end of the day.
Once again, when it comes to why I didn’t like this book quite as much as what came before it, we have ourselves yet another instance where I mostly just wasn’t really entertained or having as much fun with what this gave me in comparison to what came before. Sure, this is definitely the story packed with the most stuff in this series so far, and it is funny and exciting when it comes to what the story does with all that previously mentioned stuff, but I dunno, it just didn’t seem to hit quite as hard as that as what came before it…. not really sure how else to describe it. What I do know how to describe though is with the issues that the book has, because there are actually some problems here compared to the last book, primarily in how it falls back into old habits. Once again, we have a book that doesn't always know how to focus on one thing at once, to where there is a central premise that all of the events in the book revolve around, but it also finds itself getting distracted at points once again, not to the level that Strikes Again managed to get to, but just enough to where it is noticeable. Not only that, but there is also the aforementioned writing, which, while still being solid for the most part throughout the whole thing, can still have some lines that hurt to read. There's this one part towards the end of the book where Nate and Dee Dee slam into each other and hurt themselves, with Dee Dee overreacting and saying she may have broken a bone, to which Nate responds with “Save the drama for your momma, Dee Dee!”.............. no kid in the history of the world has EVER said something like that, and everyone knows that for a fact.
Overall, despite the somewhat less focused plot and some lines that make me wanna end it all, Big Nate: Goes for Broke certainly did go for broke, and it succeeded in almost all of its endeavors, not quite being as fun and enjoyable as previous entries, but it was still solid enough to where it still delivers you all the goods you have come to expect while going bigger and better than ever before, and I ended up having a pretty good time with it, what with its extremely solid story, a really good set of characters that are paired with some very good writing for the most part, the same great art as always and just enough funny and memorable lines and moments that kept me smiling and enjoying myself from start to finish. I would recommend it for those that loved the previous books, as well as the original comic and books like this in general, as while I can’t promise this one will blow the other books out of the water and be everything you could ever want, it should still give you plenty of what you have come to want, love and enjoy throughout all of these books, and with a little more added to that for good measure, which is more than enough for me. But anyway, before I go, I just wanted to share that the copy of this book that I bought from eBay had all of the activity sections in them filled out, which meant that I got to see all of the…. “lovely” drawings that the previous owner of this made before I got it for myself. If I could show them to you all, I would, but let me tell ya….. they are REALLY something.
