They thought they were safer on the ground... they were wrong.
Immediately picking up after the events of 2023's Horizon, and it's 2024 prequel 'Ransome', a battle of revenge, revelations, and survival comes into play between Roman Knight, Drusilla and Harry Ransome; a man who should have been dead over 150 years ago.
But with everyone so worried about the ravenous creatures above them in the darkness of space, they fail to realise that something far deadlier lurks beneath the ice. Something which has kept Harry Ransome alive all this time. Something sentient. Something which has been growing for centuries.

SO MANY ANSWERS BUT SO MANY MORE QUESTIONS 😰 This was an incredible read, I have no idea how David weaves so many plot elements together, but he does it well to create an entertaining narrative! TW violence, murder, and a little bit of genocide, and a lot of medical malpractice. But that's typical of a D. W. Adams book 😁
I am excited for the ARC readers to get their hands on this one, and then the rest of the world, because the Frozen Planet series really deserves the hype!
To say I’ve been eagerly awaiting Emergence is underestimating how much I am now eagerly awaiting the third in the trilogy.
Without giving away too many spoilers for Emergence, or its prequels, Horizon and Ransome, Emergence is phenomenal. And I do not say that lightly. It takes what’s built in Horizon and Ransome and explains where the aliens come from, why the aliens are there, who the aliens are, and much more. An alert reader of reviews may have noticed that although I am waiting for the third in the trilogy, I’ve already listed three books. Horizon is the first in the trilogy, and Ransome is a kind of prequel, but not a prequel. Horizon feeds into it and Emergence, but Ransome feeds into Horizon and Emergence. Confusing, in the best way possible. If possible, read both previous books simultaneously. Do you need them before reading Emergence? I’d say yes.
Now… What’s Emergence? Well, we meet back up with some characters (as they don’t all make it! Shock horror!) from both previous books trapped on an icy world (I don’t think that’s a spoiler…it is on the front cover of Horizon, after all). They survive in the most remarkable way possible. The previous books had a variety of Star Trek-esque vibes about it, but without the happy, perfect future of Starfleet, more the grungy underbelly of Firefly or Aliens. This one’s closest Star Trek vibe is the Borg, but only if the Borg made the fundamental mistake of assimilating the Xenomorphs from Alien.
There is death. There is a lot of death. Wading through blood amounts of death. It’s the nature of this story to dismember people. One adage that springs to mind for this episode: In science-fiction, nobody has to stay dead.
The characters are awesome. I picture them all clearly. Though… Drusilla, a recurring character, who gets described as human with shocking blue hair, in my head she’s Mystique from the X-Men. Who’s blue with red hair. I know. Don’t come at me. Shifting allegiances and surprise abound throughout the book and I enjoyed every minute I read it. And to circle back to the beginning, I am now eagerly awaiting the third to tie up the fifty plot threads currently expertly woven into the tapestry of this series. I believe it’s called Revenge. Well…. Revenge will be mine!
The latest entry in the Frozen Planet saga... this is the best yet. A rollercoaster ride of emotions, action and a sprinkle of humour. Coated in a luscious layer of darkness woth an eerie aura, this book is the recipe for ultimate sci-fi horror! The twists and turns in this book coupled with stellar characters equate to an exceptional read! I WANT VENGENCE NOW!
Received as an audio copy to review from the narrator, this is an honest review. Just as with Ransome and Horizon, narrator Brandon J. Peterson continues his hauntingly beautiful performance that makes this twisted and poignant series so wickedly memorable. From the outside of it, a beautiful icy world seems like a perfect haven against the absolute terror that Roman Knight, Harry Ransome, Samantha Barns, Drucilla and their crews experience in their journey across the stars to save humanity. But this glistening planet is more a place that is straight out of someone's demented nightmare; where a scientist's desperation to help his ailing daughter morphs into terrifying experiments that creates dangerous creatures you'd never wanted to meet. Surviving even a day on his world is something of a miracle. Emergence is packed from beginning to end with so many hauntingly insane secrets of desperation, betrayal and revenge that has fueled this adventure of carnage; once you taken it all in, it'll change how you experience this series.
I already loved this sci-fi horror series but this book went up a gear. The story is complex and so well thought out, keeping on the right side of confusing at all times - even when some of the reveals are mind-boggling!
Emergence continues from Horizon and Ransome (the latter technically being a prequel but really should be read in between Horizon and Emergence). The story wastes no time getting into action, answering questions as quickly as it poses ten more, and has left me absolutely ready for the final installation.
I won't go into too much detail as my thoughts are likely to run into spoiler territory. However, the world and characters are really well done, especially Drusilla who balances the line of good and evil as she finally understands her past...
