This Kind of Love

Rate this book
Kate Dailey's life is built on three unshakeable beliefs: Taylor Swift's music is the ultimate cure, "Happily Ever After" doesn't exist, and Jason Cole is the last person on earth she wants to see again. Growing up in a small town, Jase was her first everything—kiss, friend, and beacon of hope through her darkest days, especially with her father's battles with alcoholism. But when Jase shattered her heart, Kate left everything behind, including him and the memories of fireflies and Magnolia trees.

Now, six years later, Kate has carved out a new existence in NYC, armed with a sassy pup and a dream job at Q Magazine. Yet, when family duty calls her back home to confront her past, including the boy next door who became the man she loves to hate, Kate's carefully constructed world starts to wobble. Facing Jase again, along with her complex family dynamics and the small-town life she escaped, Kate is torn between the safety of the life she's built and the perilous allure of a second chance with the one who broke her beyond repair.

In a story where heartbreak and hope collide, Kate must decide if she's willing to risk everything for a shot at true happiness, or if some wounds are just too deep to heal. Can the melodies of Taylor Swift guide her towards her own "Happily Ever After," or will Kate find that some things, like her love for Jase, are too persistent to ignore?

♡ quite possibly the best small town romance i've ever read ♡

4/5 ⭐️

thank you to @ashleydetweiler_author and @risingactionpublishingco for an ARC of this book!

abby jimenez lovers.. this book is for you! this truly is one of the sweetest love stories i've ever read. it makes for a good one sitting read at 217 pages & the plot keeps you ENTICED!!

📖 plot & pace: medium/fast paced with so many lovely layers that keep you interested! i absolutely fell in love with the small town of Sloane, Kate and her inner circle and the blooming romance(s)!!

👥 characters: i LOVED these characters! yes.. Kate & Jase can be seen as "childish".. but i think they're just reliving their childhood love that they never got to finish!! and in a small town like Sloane, what else can you do?!

🤩 tropes: small town romance, second chance romance, (slightly) forced proximity, love triangle

⚠️ content notes: there are brief mentions of verbal domestic altercations/alcohol addiction. nothing graphic descriptions & very low spice.

i really do wish this book was longer! i felt Kate and Jase's storyline was perfectly paced but i wish Nick had a bit more depth in the story. he was SO CUTE!!

overall, i loved this book and it made me feel so understood. this is the kind of love i've always dreamed about 💕

The story of Kate and Jase reminded me of Sweet Home Alabama and the secondary characters really shined in this story. While the focus of this story revolves around Kate and Jase, I found myself enjoying the quirky nana, protective best friend, and little brother as well. At the heart of the novel is a second chance at love and the relationship was well fleshed out through dual timelines. While the book may not be for everyone (there are several content warnings due to alcoholism and generational trauma), I found it as an easy read that took me a lazy Saturday afternoon.

Started this book on a Monday night and woke up at 6am the next day to finish it! Heartfelt second chance romance that had me eager to know what happened next. Some really fun characters (I loved Nana) mixed with some heavy topics. Also great lead up for books on side characters, can’t wait to read more!

I loved this book and finished it in 2 days! A great romance story that also delved into more serious topics. I really enjoyed the dual timelines in the book - it gave a glimpse into Kate's childhood which was great insight into her present day character. Great debut book, looking forward to reading more by this author! Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book

This Kind of Love was such a sweet second chance love story that tackled complicated families and addiction head-on, it feels like a well written country song. It would be easy to assume that this was just another small-town romance, but the author takes us on a journey of a childhood love that goes beyond first crushes and shows what it means when someone loves and supports you through the toughest moments of your life.

Katie Dailey is a small-town girl making a life for herself in NYC, she is giving Andy from the Devil Wears Prada vibes, she's driven and not willing to just let any guy in to disturb her peace and the little slice of life she has carved out for herself away from her past. When she is forced to return home to her family in Tenessee because of her estranged father getting ill, she has to confront some difficult truths about what she left behind, including her first love Jase.

Jase gives off golden retriever vibes, but will alllll the muscles. I love a bit of yearning and our boy definitely yearns for Katie. It was fun to see these two banter and Katie do her best to avoid having to confront Jase as he shows up around every corner.

I think the heart of the book is really the flashback chapters that show how Katie and Jase grew-up together and the impact of Katie's dysfunctional family impacts all of their lives. Aspects of her relationship with her were truly heartbreaking, but the author does not shy away from the realities of living with an addict, which makes the ending all the more sweet.

I would recommend this book to readers who like Elsie Silver and Stephanie Archer. It's cozy romance, but does tackle some complicated topics, great for a beach read or snuggled up on a rainy day.

Thanks to NetGalley and Rising Action for the ARC.

Congratulations Ashley for your debut! 🥳

It was definitely one of the best small town and second chance romance I’ve ever read.

I was hooked from the start. I couldn’t put it down!

Kate and Jase’s story feels like a real life fairy tale. I’ve always loved second chances, especially when it’s childhood friends to lovers.

The back and forth between the past and present was beautiful. Instead of Kate just telling us about it, we were able to see it and really understand what she and Jase went through.

If you love second chances, small town romances, Taylor Swift, and found family—then this book is for you. 😉🥰

Can’t wait to meet the Ashley this coming Sunday! I’m so excited and looking forward to read your future books! 💗

Kate and Jase 🫶🏻
Wow… just wow. Phenomenal. Flew through this book, was so invested! From start to finish I loved absolutely everything about the book, writing style, pace, and the tropes.
I literally do not have a single complaint, if you like a sweet home Alabama trope style you’ll love this book. If you like a second chance romance where the true growth between characters can be seen the further the story goes, another reason to read! I felt it was very realistic. This book is definitely a contender for best romance of 2025.
I was very lucky to have had the opportunity to read an advanced reader version back in January and very lucky to have been gifted the final book by the author. I absolutely cannot wait to see Ashley’s next project, I definitely could see even sequel potential just with other characters in this book.

The description seemed interesting, kinda drew me in, absolutely flew through the first 25% and I kinda had a suspicion of something but wasn’t exactly sure if I was right. Then it just felt like around the 30% mark I was like some of this is just not believable just not realistic in the slightest. I just didn’t understand how literally everyone in the entire town knew about something and it just stayed a secret???? The FMC’s mother and grandmother like knowing v well that the FMC’s believes something to be true but it’s not. That just didn’t sit well with me. Anyways the further I got into the book my suspicion was confirmed but it just angered me the entire town knew and she didn’t???
Despite all of that I did enjoy the book, it was a nice story. I’d say i probably read this book in maybe 3-4hrs total
Kinda felt bad for the other love interest, he did seem like a really great guy!!
I thought the FMC was a bit immature at times about situations. She runs away when any little thing doesn’t go her way and she doesn’t even try to communicate with the MMC just assumes the worst. You’d hope at 26 be a bit more mature at that age. Felt she was awful to her mom at times, of course her feelings about her father are valid and they had a complicated relationship but she provided no emotional support to her mom. Often ignoring her.
Took a brief break after hitting 30% was thinking of DNF but stuck with it and ended up being a good story.
Could’ve been 5 ⭐️ without that whole big misunderstanding. But it also quite realistic as communication issues and miscommunications are big issues in relationships.

Thank you to NetGalley and Ashley Detweiler for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. Really happy to have been chosen to review this book, this is the authors first book so I’ll be keeping an eye out for her future work!!

This Kind of Love left me with such a warm fuzzy feeling at the end, although there were times where it left me wondering if Kate could ever truly find happiness. I LOVED the dual timeline to slowly reveal the mysteries of Kate’s past. It was equal parts satifying and frustrating while building to the climax.
Her dog, Hyla is a work of art. If you’ve ever had a dog best friend, you understand the relationship whole-heartedly.
Her grandmother and best friend are the support system she needs while being the comedic relief WE need!
Girl’s night in Sloane really gave some of the supporting characters more depth while helping Kate work through her emotions.
The second hospital scene felt pivotal to the story, when she finally confronts her dad and Jase (which we’ve been screaming for her to do since the beginning!), but I was NOT prepared for the next flash back, which led to more heartbreak and tears I ever knew a person could go through in such a short period of time. I’m not ashamed to admit I bawled.
I love how the author really leaves us guessing how this will fully resolve until the end, but she ties up all the ends you were worried about in a nice little bow. Even Nick gets his happy ending (I was very concerned about that!).
The proposal is absolute perfection when the firefly lands on the ring bringing us full circle with the firefly motif.
I also appreciate the parallels of denying Jase and her dad their second chances for so long until she finally has to face it. As frustrating as it is to the reader, it makes much more sense when you realize the trauma she went through with each of them.
Overall, a great romcom with deep issues to run you through the gambit of emotions.

"I don't think you ever hated Jase, or your dad, for that matter. I think you hate what they did to you, and I think you hate how you reacted, but I don't think you truly hate them."

I'm not the type of person to look at tropes or story comparisons when I look for a new book, but I'll admit — when I read that "This Kind of Love" is "Sweet Home Alabama" meets "The Notebook," I knew I needed an ARC immediately!!!

I'm a sucker for a good contemporary romance, but this story is so much more than that. It's a book about grief in its many forms, friendship, healing and reconnecting to your roots despite your past.

Ashley tackled the heavy themes with grace, dignity and candor. Nothing felt artificial or superficial. Additionally, Detweiler's characters are sooo lovable and REAL. I feel like I could seriously be best friends with Kate, Amy and the rest of the cast. I want to play cards with Kate's grandma!!!

The book is perfectly paced for my ADHD brain. Something important to the story happened in every chapter. The chapters jumped back and forth on the timeline in an easily digestible way that connected to the next chapter immediately. I love discovering the backstory of a character while their present story unfolds!!

I recommend this book to anyone over 18, but carefully read the trigger warnings.

TW: alcoholism, mental and emotional health, generational trauma, off-page cancer diagnosis and treatment, off-page death, grief, and strong language.

I always forget how much I love second chance romance until I read one as good as this!

Thank you NetGalley, Rising Action Publishing, and Ashley for providing me the opportunity to read this ARC. It was an absolute delight.

First, I'll say Ashley does an outstanding job depicting emotion, when the characters felt heartbreak, happy, betrayed, hurt, relieved, I did too. Kate is dealing with a lot of childhood trauma and at times feels like she's running away but honestly who can blame her? I actually appreciated how she is depicted and didn't feel like her anxiety was shoved down our throats. And Jase? Are you kidding me!?! He is so swoon worthy and frustrating all at once it's perfect 🤣

This is a great romance novel if you're looking for something that is meaningfully deep, impactful, emotional and most importantly hopeful. The way Ashley moves back and forth in the timeline of Kate's life is very intriguing and kept me engaged. I loved seeing the past and how it was affecting her current situation. The plot device was very effective in my opinion.

This book is a second chance, small town romance with elements of strong family ties, hard family dynamics and supportive friendships! Also side note: if you love Taylor & "Friends" you're gonna love a lot of references in here!!!

This Kind of Love by Ashley Detweiler

I really liked the representation of toxic parents in this book and the emotional turmoil it can cause. When Kate’s father is rushed into hospital, she heads home to support her family. Going home means Kate is forced to confront her painful past. Every inch of Sloane is filled with memories of Kate’s alcoholic father, and the heartbreak her childhood sweetheart, Jase, inflicted on her. Can Kate put the past behind her and reconnect with her family and her past love?

While This Kind of Love is a romance, there’s also a lot of talking points around family dynamics. It’s interesting to unpack the emotional baggage Kate has from her childhood. The romance is sweet, and I enjoyed the flashbacks.

Thank you Net Galley and the Author for an ARC copy. All thoughts are my own.

Most people know the feeling “There’s no place like home”, but sometimes going home is the last thing you want to do. Especially if you are running from the past and it tries to collide with the present. This book has heavy topics including alcoholism, abuse, anxiety, cancer, & death. But it is also about healing, and forgiveness.

Kate returns home after 6 years away and expects that nothing has changed. And in many ways that is true, but in a few ways- everything has changed. Leaving Kate to navigate through how that makes her feel, and what it means for the life she has built.

The story has a dual timeline that flashes back and forth between Kate at six years old, to Kate in her mid twenties. You experience family dynamics, trauma, love and loss in the span of the book.

Jase was Kate’s safe space and person for most of her life, until one accident changes everything. Kate believes Jase lived a very different life after she left, so when he keeps showing up telling her they need to talk she avoids him at every opportunity.

But eventually all things reach a boiling point- when confronted with past hurt can Kate forgive and forget?

Thank you NetGalley and Ashley Detweiler for opportunity to read and review this ARC!

This book is so good! I woke up at 3 am and wanted to read a chapter to see if I could get tired. Instead I was up reading this book until the end. I literally could not put it down. Kate and Jase story was so believable and just a perfect second chance love story. Kate moved to NYC for school and to escape. A sick family member brings her back home to face Jase and other trauma from her family. I don’t want to say too much but you need to read this. Everything was handled well in the story and not swept under a rug. Very believable and one of my favorite reads this year.

DNF.

At first, I had a great feeling about this book, and then the writing started to feel off. There were important things that were completely brushed past, and that really bothered me.

Kate—the FMC—was so ignorant, which made me really dislike this, so I decided to not go any further.

No hate to the author! This just wasn’t the right read for me.

Adorable, small town romance. I love a second chance romance. And I really hope we see Nick again because I definitely think this author is going to be bringing us some amazing stories in the future.
I will say, as the daughter of an alcoholic, it was not necessarily easy to read the interactions between Kate and her father. But it was very real, and I think that is an important subject that is not necessarily addressed as often as it should be.

“First loves aren’t meant to be your last … are they?”

I love a good second chance romance and this one was so sweet. I love the boy next store meets the girl next door and that its, its a love for life. But this second chance wasn’t just about first love, it was a second chance at living, without regrets and the past.

Kate escaped her small town of Sloane, Tennessee six years ago for New York to become a writer and hasn’t looked back. She working for a magazine she loves and has amazing people around her. But she never gets too serious with men to have a relationship bc her first love broke her heart.

Something has happened, though, and Kate has to go back to her small town and with that comes all the memories, not just of her first love but of her father as well.

When I say this book was sweet, I mean that the love between Kate and Jase was so freaking cute even when they were six years old catching fireflies together. The love that blossomed over time was gradual and they knew they had something so special, they were holding it so tight with both hands.

Kate’s family was also a huge aspect in this book and she really makes you fall in love with all her mama, Pop and nana. They rally around each other so much in this book.

This book definitely made me want to cry in some parts. In other parts, especially with Jase and Kate together, I just wanted to hold on to them. For a debut novel, if she was going for a Sweet Home Alabama feel, she hit the nail on the head with this one.

I completely devoured this book within 48 hours. It had everything I wanted for a small town romance, childhood best friends grown up to fall in love, big dreams, family, drama, etc.. the character development had me wanting to keep going, and I literally could not put it down. First book I’ve read by this author and I’m very much looking forward to seeing what the future has in store.

Trigger warnings include addiction, off page death, toxic, parent relationships, and more.

In all honesty, I just couldn’t get into this book. The characters all had golden retriever personalities Nd were just too hyper on the page.

The book/plot also didn’t have a good flow. It felt choppy as we would go from scene to scene and dialogue to dialogue.

I couldn’t connect with the FMC because when we first meet her she just slept with a one night stand, then she starts dating this nice guy Nick, only to go home and reconnect with Jase. It rubbed me the wrong way.

The FMC’s Nana and Mama drove me nuts. So did the friend Amy.

I really wanted to like this one, but it should have been a pass. I hope other readers who like very active characters and fast plots like it.

I thought this was such a great rom com read! I instantly loved the "13 going on 30" or "How to lose a guy in 10 days" vibes at the beginning and I was drawn to Kate's character through her quirkiness and dealing with very real/deep life issues. I love a big city girl who has to go back to her small town roots - that story line never gets old! The writing was sharp, witty, and I could picture this book like a movie in my head. Well done and I can't wait to read more from this author.

This is a good book. The two main characters are Kate and Jase. They meet when they were six years old. Jase’s family moved in next door to Kate. They were boyfriend and girlfriend till they graduated high school. Kate wanted to move to New York to go to college and get a job there. Jase was all set to move with her but the summer after graduation his father died, he felt like he couldn’t go with her so they broke up. Several years later Kate’s mom called and asked her to come home because her father had cancer. She came home and worked things out with Jase and they fell in love.

A heartwarming small-town romance that transcends the typical narrative of young love lost and rekindled. This story dives into the complexities of family dynamics, illustrating how they shape the individuals we become. It beautifully highlights the emotional journey of repairing fractured relationships, while also conveying the important lesson that, at times, it's okay not to fully mend what’s been broken. A poignant exploration of healing, growth, and the enduring resilience of first love.

Loved this second chance, small town romance!

This heartfelt contemporary romance brings in the warmth of small towns and second chances, while tackling heavier topics like addiction and family conflicts. Think Sweet Home Alabama meets It Ends with Us.

Kate Dailey made her own life in NYC, far from the lightning bugs of the south where she keeps everyone at arms-distance. But when news of her father’s health reach her, she returns home to confront her past including her first love and arch nemesis, Jase. But once she’s home, she learns what love can do. Yes, there are difficult topics like alcohol and verbal abuse, which are heartbreaking, but the author also shows the true power of forgiveness and what happens when you find the courage to love again. I loved the flashbacks to when Jase and Kate were kids and the supporting characters, especially Nana who reminded me of my own Yaya (grandma).

This book will pull at your heartstrings and warm your heart, too!

I found this story to be a refreshing love story. I can relate to Kate, going back home, and being haunted by ghosts from her past, at the same time looking toward a future and finding herself and her heart in the end. I have been describing this book as a sweet love story. I enjoyed it!
