Packed full of morally gray characters and a slower paced game of cat-and-mouse, Trust Issues was a solid read focused on the con artist trope. With multiple twists—including the best of the best right at the end—and a popcorn thriller core, I flew through this novel in no time at all. The characters, however, made the book what it was. A combination of a handful of thoroughly unlikeable individuals in addition to one I was rooting for right from the start, I was 100% hooked as I waited to see who was going to come out on top in the end. And when the conclusion finally arrived, boy was I surprised. Deftly delivering a flipped script to yours truly, I had one heck of a s***-eating grin on my face. After all, while not exactly happily ever after, it was everything I wanted and more.
The only mild irritation I had centered around the naïve and immature nature of some of the characters (I’m looking at you, Hazel and Kagan). I mean, these two were supposed to be in their forties, but behaved as if they were no more than twenty. More times than I could count, I wanted to shake them both good and hard. At the same time, this only added to the drama and produced a read that was more fun calamity than pulse-pounding chase.
All in all, with the perfect conman antagonist, a well-crafted revenge plot, and plenty of inheritance drama, these quirky, unlikely allies had me in the palm of their hands. Throw in a healthy dose of sibling rivalry and some dysfunctional family dynamics? I was over the moon as I raced through what was part suspense and part cozy-ish mystery novel. From my rampant suspicion of every single character to the thoroughly unpredictable plot, I can’t say enough about how impressed I was by the masterful duo of writers. So do I recommend this one to all of my readers? I most certainly do. If you love sketchy characters, family secrets galore, and a tale that will keep you on your toes, then this book is for you. Rating of 4 stars.
