Packed full of morally gray characters and a slower paced game of cat-and-mouse, Trust Issues was a solid read focused on the con artist trope. With multiple twists—including the best of the best right at the end—and a popcorn thriller core, I flew through this novel in no time at all. The characters, however, made the book what it was. A combination of a handful of thoroughly unlikeable individuals in addition to one I was rooting for right from the start, I was 100% hooked as I waited to see who was going to come out on top in the end. And when the conclusion finally arrived, boy was I surprised. Deftly delivering a flipped script to yours truly, I had one heck of a s***-eating grin on my face. After all, while not exactly happily ever after, it was everything I wanted and more.

The only mild irritation I had centered around the naïve and immature nature of some of the characters (I’m looking at you, Hazel and Kagan). I mean, these two were supposed to be in their forties, but behaved as if they were no more than twenty. More times than I could count, I wanted to shake them both good and hard. At the same time, this only added to the drama and produced a read that was more fun calamity than pulse-pounding chase.

All in all, with the perfect conman antagonist, a well-crafted revenge plot, and plenty of inheritance drama, these quirky, unlikely allies had me in the palm of their hands. Throw in a healthy dose of sibling rivalry and some dysfunctional family dynamics? I was over the moon as I raced through what was part suspense and part cozy-ish mystery novel. From my rampant suspicion of every single character to the thoroughly unpredictable plot, I can’t say enough about how impressed I was by the masterful duo of writers. So do I recommend this one to all of my readers? I most certainly do. If you love sketchy characters, family secrets galore, and a tale that will keep you on your toes, then this book is for you. Rating of 4 stars.

3 stars! 💫 Okay, let’s talk about this one! It was a fun ride, but definitely took me a minute to get through. This is my first ARC of 2025 (yay me!) so thanks to Penguin Group Dutton and NetGalley for the advanced copy! Now, don’t get me wrong, the plot had me hooked with all its suspense and twists, but the characters? Whew. They were a lot. Honestly, none of them were exactly my faves (Hazel and Kagan? Spoiled brats! 🙄), and that made it tough to get into their heads. But hey, the drama was chef’s kiss 😅.

✧ Sibling Rivalry ✨
✧ Family Secrets 🤫
✧ Revenge 👊
✧ Unlikely Allies 🤝
✧ Shady Con Artists 💸
✧ Inheritance Drama 💰

I mean, there were SO many moments where I just wanted to shake Hazel and Kagan and scream, "Come on, grow up!" because their immaturity had me questioning their age. They acted like they were still in their 20s, not 40s! 🙄 But hey, that’s kinda the point, right? The whole messiness of it was part of the charm. Their self-centered behavior definitely added to the drama (and the frustration), but it also kept the plot interesting. The mystery of their mom's death and the missing fortune kept me on my toes, and the twists? Let’s just say, that ending caught me off guard (kind of)! 😜

Would I recommend it? Yeah, sure! If you love family drama, conmen, and characters you secretly (or not-so-secretly) love to hate, then this book might be right up your alley. It’s full of messy, suspense-filled chaos! But if you need characters you can root for, this one might not be your cup of tea. All in all, it’s a solid 3-star read! 💫📚

“People show their true selves when shit gets real.”

giphy-1

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Oh boy, tough one. Tough one, in that, what is the point in reading the mechanisms of a con artist like Perry, when literally everything he's spouting is absolute bs? Not to mention, how infuriating it is to see him play up the charm and work his magic in order to cheat out another unsuspecting victim. 🥺

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ The sad thing is con artists are very much real; they exist in plain sight and easily manipulate and dupe others to fall for their whims and then leave them, high and dry. The sad thing is there are those who feel so cheated - much like Kagan and Hazel - out of what was rightfully theirs, that they'll stop at nothing to reclaim it - even though, honestly, they didn't really deserve it in the first place. 😒 Enlisting Perry's daughter in bringing her father down - after they discover that their mother was not the first hapless target to fall victim - definitely serves as enough of a reason to enact justice, if not revenge.

Well, in Ava's case, anyway.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ And I sympathized with her, really I did. Her life story was harrowing and heartbreaking - 'Jesus, your life should be a podcast' - for it cemented why she behaved the way she did - how she felt coerced, if not determined to make sure her tactics were met with decisive if not reasonable sense. But, my Trust Issues with the book, itself, were not so much with Ava, but the rest of it. 😑

“It could almost be funny, if it weren’t so tragic.”

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ It was so hard to even remotely care for Kagan and Hazel - these rotten, good-for-nothing brats - when there was nothing nice about them, even before their mother's tragic death. And that makes it difficult for the readers to empathize, let alone feel like what is the point then of reading when they don't even deserve it? 🤦🏻‍♀️ So many truths laid bare of how they were not worth sympathizing for - already at each other... Only in it for the money, their complicated and very unflattering relationship with their mother - in the hopes that they can see the light and change? *snort* 🙄🙄 Highly doubtful, because even while on this mission, they were just not good people. And how they tricked Ava with their twisted lies, hoping to dupe her into seeing it from their end - it's like a con within a con! It gave me even more of an ick how they were both competing for her affections! Yeah, that didn't sit well with me, one bit - triumphing over one another by treating her as a prized trophy that they rightfully deserved. 😬🙅🏻‍♀️

giphy-2024-12-26-T134249

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ And when you KNOW that there is the bad guy, it seems moot and pointless to read about his scheming ways. 🙅🏻‍♀️ I was -- not bored - but indifferent to Perry's perspective; because, everything he says - is a lie! There is no doubt or secret to that, so why would I bother reading his swooning words, when all I'm thinking is how exactly will this poor soul save herself, before she meets the same fate as Janice. 😟

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ I wasn't too happy with the outcome, either. Not only was it rushed, it became more tell than show, which made me feel like it was all for nothing - the build-up and execution fell flat. 😕 I expected more; not that I don't appreciate how Ava treated the twins - it was unexpected - I think Perry's ultimate ending needed a more impactful hit. Considering how much she has endured, lost, and suffered - the injustice of it all didn't quite meet my level of retribution... Maybe to her, it did, and the authors did express it in a meaningful way, but the loss of it all was meager, at best. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This was such a fun and engaging premise. After Kagan and Hazel’s mom tragically dies under suspicious circumstances, they are surprised to learn they are not included in the will. They begin to suspect their mom’s second husband, and a game of cat and mouse begins. There are plenty of twists which make for good surprises.

While I enjoyed having a book chock-full of unlikeable characters (Hazel and Kagan are spoiled and ungrateful, more concerned about getting free money than their mom when she was alive), I did find it difficult to believe that Kagan and Hazel were around 40. Both their personalities and the way they thought made them seem early 20s. This would throw me sometimes when something would remind me they were older, but this immaturity portrayed could have also been intentional. I would have preferred them written slightly differently though.

I received an advanced copy through Netgalley in return for an honest review.

The blurb was interesting, and as a former Estate Paralegal, any book that deals with estate matters is catnip to me. This is the first book by this author, so since I tend to stay in my rut this should be interesting. This is a multi-layered mystery that is slow to give up its' secrets. I loved the path that the authors led me on, although I really didn't like any character in this book. It made it really tough to slog through it when they were such nasty people.

Kagan, Hazel are deeply flawed siblings tied together by the tragic death of their mother, Janice. Throw into this volatile family situation is Perry, Janice's husband. But as divergent as the sibling's life paths, they are united in seeing that their mother's death is avenged. Perry, Janice's husband, is a con man who excels in the long game, and he thinks Kagan and Hazel are no match for him. He would be right, at least until Kagan and Hazel hook up with Perry's estranged daughter, Ava. Ava is one really smart reformed hacker. She has her own reasons to want revenge on Perry and is willing to put up with the bickering siblings to get it.

My thanks to the Publisher, and Author, for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.

This was another solid read from an author duo that I’ve enjoyed in the past. I liked the premise and how you never really knew who was trustworthy and since pretty much all of the characters are unlikable it’s easy to side eye them all. While there were some small surprises along the way the ending was really great for me and pretty unexpected. If you like con stories, domestic suspense, unlikable characters and vengeance thrillers try this!

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of Trust Issues.

I enjoy con man stories and revenge tales so I was excited to read this.

Sadly, I found the plot formulaic, the characters boring and trite, and the writing was dull; all tell, no show.

First and foremost, I had issues with the writing; the narrative is written in an info dump style.

It was like reading a textbook of what was going on.

The characters tell us what they're feeling, thinking, why they're angry.

Some chapters are just summaries of what the characters are planning or thinking, lots of inner monologuing.

Second, people don't speak like this in real life; talk in paragraph form and say "i see" constantly which is what the detective Calabrese says all the time.

The characters are unlikable, Hazel and Kagan are privileged, entitled middle-aged brats who vow vengeance not because Perry had their mother killed but made off with their inheritance.

With kids like these, who needs enemies?

Perry's daughter was the only interesting character, but she's poorly developed since she's written in a term paper kind of way like everyone else.

This type of writing drags the narrative down, the pacing is slow and tedious, and lacks suspense and excitement.

I didn't care about anyone but most of all, I didn't care what happened or was going to happen.

This is a fascinating look at a woman's death and all the events leading up to it. In the prologue a woman leaps to her death off a cliff--or is she pushed? When husband, Perry returns from a business trip he discovers the tragedy and meets her brother and sister--Hazel and Kagan--for the first time and assumes they only want the fortune she left behind. But the duo knows that Janice had a fear of heights so they're really confused as to why she would be walking alone at night. But they have their own issues as Hazel is addicted to her social media channel and Kagan is addicted to alcohol so can they be trusted? It's a wonderfully convoluted novel about the choices we make, the identities we adopt, and the lengths we may go to in ensuring we get what we want--or deserve!

I thought this book was unpredictable and complex. It’s a great premise for a book with some pretty shady characters.

When a con man marries their mother, has her killed, and steals their inheritance, Hazel and Kagan make a choice. They will do whatever it takes to bring this man down and recover their money. But they need some expertise on how to “play the long game” and take a chance on tracking down Ava, the con man’s daughter. Will they succeed?

I was a bit surprised with the ending, but all in all, a very solid 3-star read. Thank you, NetGalley and Penguin Group Dutton for the advanced reader copy.

While this would be not the best rating for most books I read, this is a good rating for this book. This is outside my normal read - (I don't typically like con stories or more popcorn thrillers), but I was gifted the book and because I had easy access to the audio I thought I'd give it a shot.

I was surprised (pleasantly) that this didn't follow a boring formula and that it moved at a quick pace. The characters were not very redeemable, but they were written where even though they were despicable people, you still had sympathy for them so it wasn't hard to root in their favor. I was a little disappointed in the twist at the end, but I thought the epilogue did a great job of wrapping things up in a believeable way and as I'm writing this, maybe the twist was more well suited than what I was thinking it would be.

As mentioned above, I listened to the audiobook and the narration was excellent. I was very engaged and breezed through this in two days, which was largely due to how well the audiobook was. I think either format would work depending on your reading interests and if you enjoy popcorn thrillers more than me you will love this book.

Appreciate the escape!

Thank you to Dutton Books for the gifted copy & prhaudio for the gifted audiobook.

Thank you @dutton books for my review copy.

First time reading this author duo and it was a good read. Hazel and Kagan sucked. They were so juvenile and entitled for their big ole age and it was off putting. I wanted to shake some sense into them as well. There were plenty of twists along the way and don’t trust ANYONE in this story at all. Reading this story also gave me a better understanding as to why people end up getting scammed and conned. 😩

Trust Issues by Elizabeth McCullough Keenan and Greg Wands. Thanks to @duttonbooks for the gifted Arc ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

An estranged pair of siblings team up after
their mother passes and their mysterious step father takes off with the inheritance.

I was not bored for a single moment of this one, an that’s really how I determine a five star read. This was a fun cat and mouse chase that really makes you want things to end right. I loved Ava and wish we got even more of her childhood; maybe a prequel would be great! The ending shocked me and certainly made me laugh in an ironic way.

Trust Issues comes out 1/28.

Formerly known as E.G. Scott (you know them from THE WOMAN INSIDE, IN CASE OF EMERGENCY, and THE RULE OF THREE), Elizabeth McCullough Keenan and Greg Wands are back with a modern con man story about sibling relationships, deception, and greed. When Hazel and Kagan learn their mother’s death wasn’t an accident and that they’ve been cut from the will, their clandestine investigation kicks off a dangerous game with even more dangerous players. This duo’s writing style is slick and magnetic, and I adored their fresh take on dysfunctional family dynamics. Don't miss this sophisticated thriller!

First of all I love titles with double meanings. Trust Issues is the name of Hazel’s podcast and it also eludes to the fact that she and her brother, Kagan, can’t access their inheritance. Oh and also that you really can’t trust a single person in this book lol
To be completely honest, I had a very hard time with the beginning of this book. I couldn’t stand Hazel and Kagan. They are entitled rich jerks, and I really am over reading about people like that. I kept reading though, and soon realized that my feelings were actually what the writer wanted lol. My hate propelled me forward, and kept me reading. I wanted to see the siblings walk away penniless, but then I wanted them to win. So many conflicting feelings. I think that means the writers sort of nailed it.
This is a fast moving, cat and mouse thriller with a long con. The second half of the book, when things really start to be revealed, was my fav part. The ending was good too, but the introduction of a new character changed the whole book. It was very smartly done, and completed the story satisfyingly.

Thank you Dutton for the gifted digital ARC!

When Ashley Winstead posts about a book, trust and believe it will go to the top of my TBR.

This book is a case of "everyone sucks here" but not in a way that annoyed me one bit. I was fascinated by every single one of these unlikeable characters. (Actually there was one exception but I won't say who so I don't spoil anything).

I really liked how this story progressed and I felt the twists were very well-placed and added a lot to the story. I also found the ending to be incredibly satisfying!

I almost always adore con man books.

Except when I don't.

Unfortunately, although the book's premise was brilliant, this "thriller" was painfully slow and lacked the sizzle, thrills, and element of suspense I was seeking.

I enjoyed the author's "con man" commentary at the end of the book.

I listened to the audiobook, expertly narrated by Beth Hicks.

1.5 stars, rounded up.

A fascinating novel about trust. How well do we every really know someone? A woman is found at the bottom of the cliff. Her husband was not there and had jus come back from a business trip. The woman was wealthy and he will meet her siblings for the first time.
The woman was afraid of heights, so the siblings do not believe she would have gone that close to the cliffs.
A riveting novel and the events that lead up to the death. What secrets will come out? Who is telling the truth? Was money the motive or something else?

What it’s about:

Hazel and Kagan’s mother recently found herself at the bottom of a cliff and her children suspect something isn’t quite right. When they meet with their estranged step father they quickly question whether he is
someone they can trust. You’ll be shocked to know…they all have trust issues! 😂 He is taking control of the money their mother left behind leaving her kids feeling hopeless. They decide their only way to fight back is to dig into their stepfathers past life and they dig up someone unexpected!

Thoughts:

What a tangled web these crazy characters weaved! This is a juicy, deceitful, unpredictably fun book where the characters are the type you love to hate! I am not sure I liked any of the characters in this one but trust me it’s why I liked this book! This book was deliciously twisty with the perfect amount of suspense! I would definitely categorize this one as more of a popcorn thriller so grab your cocktail and settle in for a very wild ride!

Two kids just find out their mother has passed away and she left all her money to her new husband. Something isn't adding up and the kids are going to find out what and why.
Hazel and Kagan both work to find out what really happened to their mother and where did their stepfather disappear with all their money. Along the way they discover they have a step sister and hope that she can spread some light on who their step father really is and how to catch him.

This book has an interesting plot and the speed of the book works well to keep your attention throughout. The ending was not what I was completely expecting and it was nice to see that little twist. The only issue I had with this book is that I didn't like the two main characters, Hazel and Kagan. They were spoiled and greedy adults that have always gotten their way until now. I do understand that was the authors point and tried to look past that, but it was hard to read in parts when I just wanted to smack the characters and yell at them to grow up.

Overall it was a good read and I would definitely read something from this author again. Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Group for an ARC in return for an honest review.

I’m sorry, this did not work for me (to the point where I’m not sure why I finished it). The synopsis made it sound like it would be an exciting story - two siblings tracking down the man who betrayed them and enacting revenge? Secret not-dead daughters? Murder?! Great premise! Seems like a thrilling ride! The book jacket literally contains the phrase “pulse pounding!”

But in reality this was a total snooze fest. Nothing twisty or shocking happens. All of the characters are one dimensional and deeply unlikable (and not in an interesting, let’s-read-about-bad-people-doing-bad-things way - they just sucked). And how the writing style just constantly info-dumped on the reader was aggravating. All in all, not for me.

Thank you to Dutton Books and Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review. If you’d like to form your own opinion, Trust Issues is out 1/28

Here we are again with yet another big nope of a book. NOPE.

This book was boring, the characters were all one sided and unlikable, and the ending was not climactic enough to save it. I need to stop picking up books about rich and spoiled brats. It never ends well.

I admit I skimmed the last 30% because if I had to sit through anymore of these characters boring nonsense I might enter a reading slump.

Thank you to the publisher for an advanced copy and remember folks that this is just my opinion so if you wanna form your own that'd be swell.

At the heart of this book is an unforgettable cat-and-mouse chase, featuring a cast of characters you can never quite decide if you like or not. The authors did a phenomenal job striking the perfect balance between character-driven depth and fast-paced, plot-driven action.

The story unfolds as two siblings race against time to prevent another unsuspecting woman from suffering the same tragic fate as their mother at the hands of her deceptive husband. The pacing is exhilarating, keeping me on edge as I tried to piece together who was truly guilty.

If you’re looking for a suspenseful, well-paced read with an ending that makes you reflect on the power of karma, this book is a must-read!

A twisty domestic thriller from a new to me author that features a pair of unlikable heirs, a suspicious stepfather who turns out to be a skilled con artist and a sizeable inheritance. This suspense story is sure to keep readers guessing as they try to figure out who is responsible for the suspicious death of the matriarch. Good on audio and recommended for fans of authors like Shari Lapena. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review!
