Rate this book
A thrilling, in-world overview of Abstergo Industries, the mysterious organization at the center of the Assassin’s Creed® franchise.

Agent: At Abstergo Entertainment, history is an experience. Our work not only enriches lives, it brings out truths that time has forgotten. But as many of our analysts have learned, testing these experiences is not easy. These files represent the work of the first analyst to take on the case of Subject 44412—Arno Dorian. Living through the bloodiest days of the French Revolution, Dorian’s life certainly took many dark turns, but those memories and choices are his own. Up until now, Dorian has proven to be one of the biggest challenges for our research team. We believe that there is valuable information to be gleaned from this subject, and our hope is that you will succeed where others have failed. Familiarize yourself with your predecessor’s file as you make your way through this case. Steel yourself, and stay focused. Don’t let us down. Your work so far has not gone unnoticed. Here is your chance to prove yourself. © 2014 Ubisoft Entertainment. All rights reserved. Award-winning author Christie Golden has written over thirty novels and several short stories in the fields of science fiction, fantasy and horror. She has over a million books in print.

2009 will see no fewer than three novels published. First out in late April will be a World of Warcraft novel, Athas: Rise of the Lich King. This is the first Warcraft novel to appear in hardcover. Fans of the young paladin who fell so far from grace will get to read his definitive story.

In June, Golden’s first Star Wars novel, also a hardcover, sees print. Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi—Omen is the second in a nine-book series she is co-authoring with Aaron Allston and Troy Denning. Also in June comes the conclusion of Golden’s StarCraft: The Dark Templar Saga with the release of Twlight, the third book in the series. The first two are Firstborn and Shadow Hunters.

2004 saw the launch of an original fantasy series called The Final Dance, from LUNA Books. The first novel in the series, On Fire's Wings, was published in July of that year. The second, In Stone’s Clasp , came out in September of 2005. With In Stone’s Clasp, Golden won the Colorado Author’s League Top Hand Award for Best Genre Novel for the second time. The third book, Under Sea’s Shadow, is available only as an e-book

Golden is also the author of two original fantasy novels from Ace Books, King's Man and Thief and Instrument of Fate, which made the 1996 Nebula Preliminary Ballot. Under the pen name of Jadrien Bell, she wrote a historical fantasy thriller entitled A.D. 999, which won the Colorado Author's League Top Hand Award for Best Genre Novel of 1999.

Golden launched the TSR Ravenloft line in 1991 with her first novel, the highly successful Vampire of the Mists , which introduced elven vampire Jander Sunstar. Golden followed up Vampire with Dance of the Dead and The Enemy Within . In September of 2006, fifteen years to the month, The Ravenloft Covenant: Vampire of the Mists enabled Jander Sunstar to reach a whole new audience.

Other projects include a slew of Star Trek novels, among them The Murdered Sun , Marooned , and Seven of Nine , and "The Dark Matters Trilogy," Cloak and Dagger , Ghost Dance and Shadow of Heaven .

The Voyager novel relaunch, which includes Homecoming and The Farther Shore , were bestsellers and were the fastest-selling Trek novels of 2003. Golden continued writing VOYAGER novels even though the show went off the air, and enjoyed exploring the creative freedom that gave her in the two-parter called Spirit Walk, which includes Old Wounds and Enemy of my Enemy .

Golden has also written the novelization of Steven Spielberg's Invasion America and an original "prequel," On The Run , both of which received high praise from producer Harve Bennett. On The Run, a combination medical thriller and science fiction adventure, even prompted Bennett to invite Golden to assist in crafting the second season of the show, if it was renewed.

Golden lives in Loveland, Colorado, with her artist husband and their two cats.

The Assassin's Creed Unity Employee Handbook is a massive step up above the previous in-universe offering from Insight Editions and author Christie Golden, and is only a few quibbles away from true excellence. As it stands, I'd recommend it for big fans of the Assassin's Creed series' present-day story.

One of the big changes that the Assassin's Creed: Unity game brought to the series was a greater focus on the historical setting instead of including playable content in the present-day as well. Sure, there was a bit of present-day story in cutscenes bookending the story and in things you could read in-game, but it was a little frustrating for people like me who actually liked the present-day narrative (although I certainly acknowledge that I'm probably in the minority).

The Employee Handbook, therefore, is the closest we got to a present-day story for Assassin's Creed: Unity. It's nothing special in that it doesn't advance the plot substantially -- it's more of a guidebook to some of the important characters and events in the game, previous Assassins from the series, weapons, etc. combined with a lot of gorgeous artwork -- but the execution as a set of files being examined by the reader in the role of a Templar agent is absolutely sublime. To start, the handbook is absolutely massive -- far larger than a normal book size. There are physical sticky notes, thick file folder dividers with section headings, and in-universe messages from game company/Templar front Abstergo Entertainment employees from one to another.

The actual story included in the handbook is nothing special though. Even though it released after the Unity game, there's not enough of the French Revolution plot included in the notes and character profiles to understand it without playing the game. And there's not enough connective tissue to really get attached to the new modern-day character, Robert Fraser. This is definitely more a companion for the game than a real new modern-day story. The one character that you do want to pay attention to if you care about the story is Abstergo doctor Victoria Bibeau, who is introduced here and then features throughout other novels and eventually makes an appearance in the Assassin's Creed: Odyssey game. One final note is that at the time of this review, included QR codes that are supposed to send you to something on the Insight Editions website no longer are functioning.

These issues aside, the Assassin's Creed: Unity Employee Handbook is a good companion to the game and a neat collectable piece that's cool to look through and own for fans of the modern-day story of the Assassin's Creed series. I would recommend it without hesitation for big-time modern-day Assassin's Creed fans and commend everyone involved in creating it as a physical item. It's really something impressive to behold.

I don't know how I feel about this book. Now I have more questions than when I first started reading this book. Who is the Journeyman? Who is this agent? Who was the Assassin Dr. Victoria Bibeau leaked information to? I hope to find the answers somewhere in the near future either through the Last Descendants novels, a movie, a game, the main series novel, the comics or the graphic novels. Whichever it is, I need to know...

Such a good read! I love books that immerse you into the world of the games or universes of the fandom. I love when it seems like a character’s journal or writing. Reading the book gave me more insight to the game and how Abstergo views and works as a company alongside its history.
