Calling All Dentists

Rate this book
Calling All Dentists is the second book in the Calling All... series.
Emma Frey shares a flat with her friend and colleague Ruby, a geeky bookish romantic with a taste for Mills & Boon.
Emma has a fear of the dentist which is becoming a real problem as her gums continue to recede, but she cannot face the thought of a visit to the dental practice. She much prefers to live by the saying, ‘Ignorance is Bliss’, which is really starting to worry Ruby.
Meanwhile, preparations for Webb’s DIY Store Christmas party are well under way and Emma has match-making plans for Ruby and another colleague, Pete, before embarking on her own love mission.
Although Emma is reeling in shock from the outright cruelty inflicted upon her from one of her work colleagues, she tries to overcome the pain and ridicule and continues with her plan.
Will Ruby and Pete discover a mutual attraction and can Emma win the heart of Webb’s shop floor manager with her charms?
More importantly, will Emma ever overcome her fear of dentists?
Ignorance is never the answer...

Tara Ford lives in Hampshire, UK with her husband, children, a naughty husky, quite a few well protected koi carp and a very frustrated heron. When she's not busily tapping away at the keyboard, she likes to pretend she can cook or she'll wander into her garden to poke and prod at the plants and flowers, for just long enough to fool the neighbours into thinking that she knows what she's doing.
Failing all of the above, Tara likes to spend time procrastinating while the dinner burns and the flowers wither and die.

A few words from the author...

I have spent the last thirty years waiting to write my first book. Why so long, I hear you ask? Well you know how it is, you get an idea in your head, mull it over for a while, get married, rekindle the dream momentarily, have children and then wake up thirty years down the line and think - Gosh! Where did that time go?
My novel writing dream manifested itself when I was fifteen years old. I had been set some English homework to write an essay about something which I cannot remember now. What I do remember is the trouble I got into when I handed my completed, labour of love, story in. It may seem odd that I got into trouble for handing in homework when these days it is a godsend to get children to even think about doing any homework but there was a slight problem... The problem was that I had written a love story which was rather explicit. Firstly, it was completely unsuitable for a fifteen year old to write and secondly, it was deemed extremely unsuitable material for school work.
Sadly, my essay was discarded and I was duly punished for the crime, although my teacher did take me aside and admit, that the story had been well written, the content was good and I should think about writing more stories. The deep burning desire has stayed with me ever since, although the genre I like to write now is not anything like fifty shades of grey, but more like women's contemporary fiction/humour.

This is Ms. Ford's second book in a four part series. I came across Calling All Dentists as I strolled through Twitterland. The short synopsis grabbed me, and I bought it just like that (imagine snapping fingers).

Unfortunately I jumped in with this book, the second in the series. I will have to read Calling All Services to see how the two books compliment each other. What I did find in this book was a very entertaining cast of characters, who could be boozy/raucous as well as tender/compassionate.

We meet the main character, Emma, as she deals with periodontal issues. Her problem with her teeth continues throughout the book, because even though Emma knows she has to do something (after all, her teeth are loose), she's terrified of dentists.

Right off the bat, Emma meets Andrew, a very sexy, nice man, who actually wants to have a relationship. The million dollar question is, will Emma's teeth come between them?

As the book evolves, we get to know the characters, and can find something in each that we can appreciate. Another review stated that this book was "...like Marmite. You love it or hate it."

It is engaging, laugh out loud funny, and heartwarming. What's not to love?

Funny, romantic tale, with twists and turns. The main character is very easy to identify with as she has insecurities and doubts just like the rest of us.

Emma is in her mid-twenties and petrified of dentists. She hasn't been to see a dentist for years and now her teeth are falling out. Wonderful idea for a novel. It had me hooked. It's funny, romantic, and thought-provoking.

There are lots of believable and true-to-life characters. I liked the way the author portrayed the relationship between Emma and her best friend, Ruby.

There are lots of twists and turns.

Emma meets a great guy, Andrew, and they begin a passionate affair. However, very soon Emma's paranoia about her teeth causes her to start behaving strangely. What's more she discovers something about Andrew that could signal the end of their relationship.

An engrossing chick-lit novel that will keep you turning the pages.

Bravo

A brilliant read, highly recommended. This time we've moved on ten years and it centres around Emma. Different from the first book, with a more serious tone and lots of heartstrings pulled, grief, romance and friendships. you still know its the same author who shows her talented way with words. Lots of true emotions, with her usual whit along the way. Again it's all very real to me, I felt like I was 're living parts having been through the same just with tonnes more complications and I applaud Tara for getting the whole teeth story spot on. We do get a sizable chunk of the family thank goodness. On to the next in series now. X

A decent read

I liked the book but in parts felt it had just a bit too much attention to detail. It is a nice story but could have maybe been a bit shorter without so much description to everything.
