New Book News:
Dear Ava is live! Not My Romeo is live! I Promise You drops October 12/20 Not My Match drops January 19/21 (pre-order on Amazon)
I initially bought this box set wanting to read Penny Reid's story, is no secret I'm a huge fan of hers. I'm not usually one that likes to read novellas or short stories but I'm glad I picked up this one, because not only did I get to enjoy a number of very romantic stories from some of my favorites author's but I also got to meet some really great new ones. Each story is unique and each author brings something wonderful and distinctive, making this collaboration of romantic tales a very enjoyable afternoon read. The only problem is I WANT MORE!!!!!
I don't think I can shelf this as read seeing as I only read one of the novellas out of the bunch. I picked this up purely out of curiosity over Penny Reid's story.
I loved all her adult contemporary and really wanted to see what her take on the NA genre was. Let me just let you know right off the bat, I'm probably not the best person to be judging a short story, because well, I don't normally care for them. I have tried many times to read anthologies or even just a single novella and always came away dissatisfied. I need more meat and potatoes to my story and it's more like a plain salad with a little dressing on top. There's no time to bond with the characters, or get swept away in the story. That being said, for me, this was like reading the first few sample chapters of a full story. If this were a full length novel about these two MCs, I would be all in. Penny has a preference it seems for writing very intelligent and or (sometimes) nerdy characters.
I LOVE that about her books. Give me a smart hero/heroine and I'm a happy girl. And she continued with this in Bunsen Burner Bingo.
As told by the synopsis, Katy Parker (Awesome last name, by the way. Hehe) is pretty much a nerdy social outcast and she's totally fine with that. She's not concerned with her looks, fashion, hooking up, or doing any of the silly things half the girls surrounding her at college do. Martin Sandeke your typical bad boy slut. He's got girls lined up for him seemingly without any effort.
He's also an athlete and all around douche to guys and girls alike. He has somewhat of a temper and cutting tongue to anyone who may set him off. If it weren't for the fact that they were chemistry partners, they probably never would have crossed paths.
I liked that Katy doesn't ignore his bad behavior simply based on the fact that he's "hot". Soooo many times in college NA you see a brainless heroine who swoons over the despicable manwhore who's motto should be "hit it and quit it". Katy has a brain in her head (as well as self-respect) and judges him by his actions. Not his looks.
I enjoyed this story-as short as it was. But I needed more. I needed questions answered about Martin's motivation over certain things that happened. I needed more backstory on both characters. I just felt like... I don't know, like I started to eat a delicious ice cream sundae and before I got to the whipped cream and cherry it was snatched away from me.
Please, Penny (please?) continue with this story and give us a full length story. I need more Martin and Katy!
What a wonderful anthology! (Really cheap at the moment too)
Big names in romance have come to give us some sweet, hot and romantic new adult reads. And to advertise themselves ;)
Some of these books totally left me wanting more of the story. I was smiling my head off and laughing. Others though, were snippets of full stories or weren't satisfying as a short story. But the anthology is a great way to discover some new authors.
My favourite stories were: Confessions – Jay McLean Spider on a Plane – Ilsa Madden-Mills Bunsen Burner Bingo – Penny Reid To Steal a Kiss – Pam Godwin Color Me Bad – Linda Barlow – this one was a serial and really bloody good, I'm looking forward to the 2nd book.
So I've only read Bunsen Burner Bingo so far but it was awesomepants and am sure so is the rest of the anthology!
BBB is in true Penny Reid fashion, smart & funny and a pleasure to read. Personally I'm not that into NA because most of them make me want to throw my kindle against the wall and I love my kindle!
HOWEVER this is obviously not the case here. BBB is relatable and funny story of a college girl with a crush on the hot guy.
My only complaint? Is that I want more of this story!
I picked up this anthology mainly because it features a short story by Ilsa Madden-Mills. I LOVED her book Very Bad Things and I was anxious to pick up anything else she has written! Spider on a Plane is a cute short story about a lead guitarist playboy who ends up sitting next to a mousy librarian type woman on an airplane. What ensues is a snarky, fun short story about how opposites do indeed attract. I was happy to see that Ilsa hasn't lost her touch - perhaps everything she writes DOES turn to gold. Next I decided to venture off and read Bunsen Burner Bingo by Penny Reid. Penny was hilarious at the Wicked Book Weekend book signing so I really wanted to read something she has written. I happily devoured this short story which follows a quirky scientist and her crush on the resident campus golden boy. The novella was funny, yet sexy and completely sold me on Penny's writing. Her full-length novels just moved up my To Be Read List! Honestly, I felt that these two stories alone made my purchase worthwhile! Since I had a little bit of time on my hands this week I went ahead and read Confessions by Jay McLean. This cute story shows us that sometimes a twist of fate can bring two unlikely people back together. It was short, sweet, and enjoyable. Overall I have to say that so far this is a great anthology with some fun short stories that you can read independently when you have a few minutes to spare! I highly recommend Breakaway to discover new authors or reinvigorate your love of old favorites!
Note: Only rated this based on two novellas, which are Spider on a Plane by Ilsa Madden-Mills, and Bunsen Burner Bingo by Penny Reid, of this collection.
To be honest, I only decided to read this collection because of Ilsa Madden-Mill's and Penny Reid's story, which turns out were the only stories I read out of this collection. Out of the 13 novellas, I only ended up reading two because they were the only ones that hooked me from the very beginning of each of their stories to continue reading them. And not to mention that they were the two that made me pick up this book.
AAAANDDDD because of those two books, I will give this 5 stars!
Breakaway will have a story or two in it for everyone. Whether you like light and fluffy, dark and gritty, cute, sexy, or smokin' hot, there are stories that will satisfy any romantic craving. I absolutely loved Breakaway. It was perfect for getting my quick romantic fixes. The stories were varying lengths and had completely different feels to them. I gravitated towards the longer stories and the cute and fun ones. But some of the darker ones were really interesting. I thought it was a really eclectic mix of Spring Break tales, but all of them had a very new adult vibe to them. Some of them were downright hot hot hot.
I liked a few of the stories so much that I had to drop everything, look the author up and write to them about their other books and buy them. I was also pleasantly surprised at how many stories there were in the book. It seemed like a pretty good length book, and there were 13 different stories for you to drink up and enjoy.
My favorite story in the book was Bunsen Burner Bingo by Penny Reid. And a few of my other top picks were Spider on a Plane by Ilsa Madden-Mills, Color Me Bad by Linda Barlow, Bling Ring in Mexico by Carly Carson, and Contacts by Farrah Farside.
Bunsen Burner Bingo was just beyond adorable. I want to see a full length book with the story of Katy and Martin. I loved that Martin was both this super smart science geek and a hot frat guy. Katy was someone who was burned in the past and hides behind her clothes and her science. This short story was laugh out loud funny and I want more!
Spider on a Plane was really cute too. It left me wanting more because of how everything ended. It is just begging for another scene once they get back to the house. Color Me Bad was awesome because of how long it was. It felt like the most completed story in the whole bunch. I felt like I got to know the characters the best, and the story was so full of twists and turns. Linda Barlow is someone I need to watch out for. If she could do that much in a novella, I must see what she can do with a full length.
Bling Ring in Mexico was a really sweet romance between two classmates that never got to know each other in school. Plus there is swimming with dolphins, how can you resist that? Contacts was a really great story about some girl who was getting used big time by a guy and gets swept off her feet by a much much nicer guy. Just the kind of thing to make me swoon. This is another one that I really want to see a full length book made out of.
I really enjoyed Breakaway. It put me right in the mood for summer. Fans of spring break, of new adult or of romance should check this book out. Read them one at a time when you are looking for a quick romance fix or read it all in one setting because you can't get enough of the fun, either way, Breakaway is sure to please.
Okay so I'm not one to leave reviews but each and every one of the short story's in this left me gasping for more. I couldn't believe it when I turned the page on my kindle and the story's all just ended so quickly. I would love to know more about each and everyone. Not one book in this disappointed me. I had previously skimmed a review before I purchased this and it kinda put me off the ones they didn't like but after reading it myself, that review didn't matter, BECAUSE THEY WERE ALL SO AWESOME!!!
Firstly I want to say how much I loved this set of novellas. I usually find when I buy an anthology I don't read them all, I pick out the authors I like and skim through the others. I am happy to say with this one I read them all!!!
Stand out story
Penny Reid Bunsen Burner Bingo - I completely loved our nerdy heroine Parker ( can totally relate
Many characters and steamy scenes. Even more story lines, plots, and settings. All from the great authors we read every day. I'd never read an anthology... I'm glad BREAKAWAY was my first!
A breezy 4 ***** from a virgin anthology blogger!!

It's true! I've never read an anthology...until Breakaway! And I'll be honest...it was hard for me to get through because every story is a piece of a story. But not necessarily cliffhangers. But some of them are. I want to read a whole book. Not part of one and that's what I feel like I got. Parts of a whole. That said, when I was finished, I LOVED it!!! Crazy right?! I don't want to take up everyone's time trying to touch on each story so I'm going to highlight the couple that really caught my eye. I've rated the book as a whole - that rating includes my previously stated hang-ups regarding anthology's. It's just not really my cup of tea - but the stories were really great!!!

Alana Albertson's Invaluable was just that! The whole premise that an ex-NFL player would quit his very lucrative job for a chance at catching our nation's bad guys is, in itself, fantastic! One of my favorite things is a good storyline written in a male's POV. Again, this author produces an excellent POV through Kyle. Kyle is a Navy SEAL and although he doesn't flaunt it - he's really proud of his job.
"I wasn't just your average sailor - I was a Navy SEAL and a former NFL linebacker. I'd left behind money and fame to make a difference in the world, do something I believed in. Something I'd die for."
I was drawn to his sense of duty, his sense of teamwork with his SEAL brothers. He was a stand up guy looking for a good time while on leave. The author gives us a sort of time frame. And we start out in 'Late Summer, San Diego'. Kyle meets Sara. While out with a 'wingman' Kyle sees and is immediately interested in Sara. They dance and talk and flirt. What's interesting is I found myself intrigued with Sara because after he mentions a part of his past and even I would have asked some follow-up questions but she doesn't. She's content and even says something like, you have to keep yourself happy. Right after this conversation - Kyle becomes intrigued with her as well...for the same reasons I did! I love it when the character and I follow the same thought process as long as the story isn't too predictable. This was NOT at all predictable!! As time progresses to 'Springtime Iraq - Nine Months Later', I'm wondering where this is going. That is until Kyle is shocked by what comes walking off a plane his Team goes to greet.
"Kyle, what are you doing here? You're on the USO tour too? ...I looked you up, but all I could find was that you'd quit football." "SEAL Team Seven sweetheart - I don't play ball anymore."
Not only are they both shocked to see one another but Kyle is excited to see her as well. They didn't part on bad terms so he's more than ready for her to 'entertain' him. Only to find out that she's now taken. So now I'm thinking, 'ok she has a boyfriend so how is she going to break-up so that she and Kyle can 'entertain' OR will she just cheat?' Kyle mentions he doesn't believe in fate - but he's baffled at how they can meet in San Diego and then end up in the same place, halfway around the world, nine months later. GREAT!! The strange part is that every time they communicate - it becomes palpable. The honesty that comes from Sara is raw. I felt like I was there. Could see her opening the box she thought was shut - but only because she couldn't find him. It was surreal to both of them. Like a second chance - but would they both take it? I had so many questions. I can smell that she doesn't care about whose back home for her. She wants to be with Kyle. But how? How will they get alone? Will his brothers help? Although there are no actual intimate scenes in this story - it's very HOT when they are in the same room. Sparks fly!! I don't want to spoil the end. So I'll leave you with this... He's a really bad-ass, African-American, Navy SEAL who find himself caring for a smart, sexy NFL cheerleader. More than he even realizes.
"I promised Sara I'd keep her safe."

Missy Johnson's Ricochet was the other I still find myself thinking of! A fun-flirty mix of rebound girl meets mystery boy while on vacation. But I was NOT expecting what was in store for me!! I found it was a spicy concoction! Jenna is a girl with a few, well deserved, insecurities. Her long-term boyfriend, whom she thought was working up to a proposal, was just found cheating. Not only was he cheating, but he is glad to be caught. Thus giving her thoughts that maybe she just not good enough. While on a trip to Barbados - courtesy of her best friend's dad - she finds herself being pushed to move on. I saw a little of every woman in Jen. She was girl-next-door. Someone you want to be friends with. A girl who knows deep down she's worth it but just needs a little encouragement.
"Claire was right - I needed to move on; but the last thing I wanted was more rejection."
The first meeting between Jen and Ryan is cute and flirty. They immediate back and forth between them - I found myself smiling and wanting them to just converse or the rest of the story. It was smart and quirky. It was witty and fun. Yet is raw and honest. Ryan picks on her but she pushes right back. It's incredibly refreshing. There was a point when I was thinking - I even made a note in my kindle - 'Is he going to actually just chat all night or...' I hoped Ryan would stay true to his word but the sexual tension was through the roof. From the moment they first met!!
"We've been here for over an hour and you haven't tried anything on me." "Because you said you didn't want me to..." "What kind of girl would I be if I openly admitted I was coming back to your place hoping you were going to make a move on me?" "Okay. How about you tell me what you want?"
When they finally get to it...Holy Hotness Batman!!! It's scorching! The whole situation between them is, in one word, free. Ryan and Jen talk about everything - and it's easy to see that it's as if they've known each other forever. Even when put in a situation that I never dreamed - they are really put to the test. Jenna finds out some startling facts about Ryan and wonders what the hell she's doing. Even my jaw was on the floor for a minute! The whole story was exciting and I had this huge smile on my face when I was finished! I kept wishing there was more!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All in all, I enjoyed them all just as much. These are the two I keep thinking about. Wishing for more than just my imagination to finish. The writing styles were all different and unique. The contrasting character developments were a great way to stay engaged while reading them all back to back. Otherwise, I might find myself with my laptop trying to write down what my theory's were for what happens next for them all! Really great way to spend a few hours!!
Huge anthology with NA writers. I picked it up for Jay McLean.
"Confessions" by Jay McLean. Don't get me wrong - HUGE McLean fan here, but the story itself? It was like cold Chinese food, it's ok, but isn't really as good as you thought it would be.
"Spider on a Plane" by Ilsa Madden-Mills. My first of her novels...and didn't really instill any drive to pick up another.
"Bunson Burner Bingo" by Penny Reid. LOVED, loved, loved it! I'm really hoping she'll do a full length novel featuring the characters.
"To Steal a Kiss" by Pam Goodwin. It was...meh. New author, and didn't really grab me. In fact, I pretty much skimmed the whole thing.
"Ricochet" by Missy Johnson. Really cute "picks-him-up-and-it-turns-into-more" story. And really? Who hasn't gotten a bit drunk and picked up someone wildly inappropriate that you later feel slightly shamed for bringing home? *chirping* No one? *sigh*
"This Girl Stripped" by Dawn Robertson. Yeah, I can't lie. I totally skipped this one. She lost me less than 6 paragraphs in.
"Color Me Bad" by Linda Barlow. Starts off with a dickhead (who's under suspicion of murder) kicking the slut who just blew him, and doesn't know his name, out of his car. Yeah, that really made me want to continue the story. Oh, wait. No, no it didn't.
"Invaluable" by Alana Albertson. About a SEAL who is a real asshole. If it wasn't only maybe 13 pages long, I would have dumped it. Frankly, I thought about dumping it 2 pages in, but I held out, hoping for some character redemption, and once I'd finished it I just felt pretty disappointed that I had actually finished it.
It also kind of ruined me for the rest of the shorts - my tolerance dipped well below acceptable levels.
"Bling Ring in Mexico" by Carly Carson. Ugh. I wish I had skipped it. I felt dirty.
"Contacts" by Farrah Farside. Meh.
"Unbreakable" by Nicole Blanchard. Argh.
God, who thought it was a good idea to put this many shorts in one book? Seriously, the publisher who thought this up should be slapped. Hard. And who are these authors? I mean, really? Besides Pam Reid and Jay McLean I haven't even heard of these others. And apparently for VERY good reason.
"Rained In" by Cherie Blakeley. Seriously?!
"In a Daze" by M-E Girard. Oh, you know what?!
FFS. With the exception of "Bunson Burner Bingo" by Pam Reid and "To Steal a Kiss" by Pam Goodwin this was a colossal waste of money and time.
This was a fun collection of coming of age New Adult stories from a variety of different authors. Each story revolved around spring break but they could not have all been more unique and . different. There were several authors in this anthology that I had previously read their New Adult stories and some that I had read in different genres. I really enjoyed the ones I had never had the pleasure of reading before. I can honestly say there was not one story I did not like, but that being said there were a few that I found absolutely FABULOUS!
Bunsen Burner Bingo by Penny Reid was amazing. I would die for this to be a full-length novel. I have read all of Penny’s Contemporary books and as far as I am aware this is her first dive into the New Adult world and I have to say I hope that she writes more in this genre in the future.
Spider in a Plane by Ilsa Madden-Mills was so much fun. Who doesn’t love a sexy British guy who is a bit of a prick and plays in a band. I mean really. I had no doubt that I would love this though because Ilsa’s first book Very Bad Things is to this day one of my favorite NA books!
Confessions by Jay McLean was a great start to this anthology. I had never read any of Jay’s books before but after this fun short story I immediately went and bought the first book in her series. This story set the whole anthology off to the perfect start and got me excited to see what else was to come.
To Steal A Kiss by Pam Godwin was a fun story that did not go the way I was expecting. I love to be surprised in stories and this one did that for me. I thought the premise was fun and different than anything I have read and look forward to reading more from her in the future!
Although I only picked four stories to highlight, none of the stories in this book disappointed me. Each one took me on a different journey and the way these girls spent their spring break was often vastly different and exciting. I hope everyone gives this anthology a shot because I guarantee you will discover some authors who will soon become among your favorites! ~miranda
I've had this anthology on my TBR listy for far too long. It's becoming clear to me that some of these stories have already been expanded upon and released under new titles. So even though I'm slow in my reading game, I've hit a winner here with newbie stories from (now) beloved authors! I'll rate/review as I move along, hopefully before the end of 2017 *fingers crossed*
First up, Bunsen Burner Bingo by Penny Reid. I have no words other than *squeeeeee* to describe my love of Penny Reid's Elements of Chemistry series. Read this story as Attraction (Hypothesis 1.1) in April 2015. I rated this part (one) and followed along while the other two parts were published separately. A total trifecta of 5* reading. And it's rereadable in all it's NA smexiness. I still hear nerdy wallflower Kaitlyn and smexy bad boy genius Martin in my head... "Parker." "Sandeke." "Parker." I know this makes no sense to you as it's written here. But trust me. It's hella hot in the book!;)
Spider on a Plane by Ilsa Madden-Mills, which I read 06/29/17 under the title Love on a Plane in the anthology Beaus & Arrows: A Collection of Sweet and Sexy Stories. I rated this entertaining, but very short short 3.5* Would love to read more about Clarence and Primrose! And it seems that I'll get that chance as the author is expanding Spider's story this year. Unclear if Primrose stays the heroine...so I'll be looking for that release!
I think I'm missing out ;)...so I better hustle it along...
This is a great anthology for anyone looking to dip their toe in the new adult waters. Whether you enjoy your new adult romances flirty, sexy or dark, there's a little bit of something for everyone in this set. Not surprisingly, the stories I was most interested in when I saw this set are the ones I enjoyed most. Confessions by Jay McLean, Spider on a Plane by Ilsa Madden-Mills, Bunsen Burner Bingo by Penny Reid and Invaluable by Alana Albertson were my favorites. I would *love* to see each of those stories continued... especially Spider on a Plane.
I read a lot of novellas and I'm accustomed to novellas set in series I'm reading. They just add something else to the story I'm already familiar with. Standalones are tougher. It's difficult to tell a full story in so few pages. Some of these felt like full stories and others really read like teasers. If I was rating based on the ones mentioned above, my rating would be four stars. I like closure in my stories and many of these had ambiguous endings that felt a little disappointing to me.
All in all, this was an enjoyable anthology. I was introduced to a couple authors whose work I've never read and am planning to look for more from them after getting a small taste of their writing.
I received a copy of this anthology from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
This was a great way to introduce me to authors that I haven't read before. A lot of these short stories had me craving more. The two that stood out for me where Bunsen Burner Bingo by Penny Reid and Spider On A Plane by Ilsa Madden-Mills. Spider On A Plane pissed me off and intrigued me at the same time and when the story ended right when things got interesting I immediately wanted more. I hope that there will be more of this story to come because I will be reading it. This was my first read by Ilsa Madden-Mills but it won't be my last. Penny Reid happens to be one of my all time favorite authors so I couldn't wait to see her venture into the New Adult category. She did not disappoint. Keeping with her smart and witty female characters and strong male characters that like them, this story had me running to Penny's page to see if there would be more. Thankfully it looks like we will get more Martin and Katy next year. Some of the stories were almost too short to capture my interest but for the most part I'd be willing to read more from each of these authors. Like I said, I think this is a perfect way for authors to introduce their writing to more readers who may be flocking to read the stories from authors they already know and love. I recommend this to anyone whose looking for a new author to read but maybe doesn't want to spend the money on full novels from each of them to start.
*I received an ARC from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review
This was a pretty good anthology. I don't usually read anthologies, unless there's a certain author I love in there or an extension story from a certain series (like Believe In Me from the Wait For You series by Jennifer Armentrout in the Fifty First Times anthology). My most favorite in this one was Bunsen Burner Bingo by Penny Reid (which I would rate 4.5 Stars individually). I really got into the story and wanted so much more when it ended. I truly wish Penny continues the story and make a full-length novel for Katy and Martin. There were also some stories here that ended pretty abrupt or rather with a cliffhanger, which makes me wonder if there will be a continuation from the author. Also, there were stories that made me question what I'm reading, and not in a good way (namely Dawn Robertson's WTF story). But basically, it was an okay read for me, more like a bumper from one novel to another.
I feel weird reviewing this as one book since it was so many different stories, some of which I loved and some of which I didn't. So although I read some of them awhile ago, I'm just going to make a list of the ones I liked and the ones I didn't:
Loved: Confessions Spider on a Plane Bunsen Burner Bingo Contacts Unbreakable Rained In
Liked: To Steal a Kiss Ricochet Color Me Bad Invaluable In a Daze
Could've done without: This Girl Stripped Bling Ring in Mexico
I'm hearing that some are going to get expanded into full-length books and could not be more excited! I'm looking at you, Penny Reid!
4.5 Stars!!! Loved it!! But these are really, really short little stories who could be a real hit as full length novels so please dear brilliant authors, write them!!!
Dear Penny Reid, I want more of Katy and Martin !!! Like right now! You got me hooked on your writing with Neanderthal seeks Human ( it's my fav from the series hands down!!) and you are definitely on my favourite authors list !
Dear rest of the autors, i love you all and yes i am definitely going to read more from all of you !!!
I only read Bunsen Burner Bingo by Penny Reid because I totally loved the blurb. And I was not disappointed! I love when heroines are a bit shy but brave so Katy was perfect! I hope Penny Reid will write an entire book based on this novella because I want more of Katy and Martin !! ♥
Breakaway was a wonderful book with some great stories...some by authors I was familiar with and love and others by authors I was happy to be introduced to through this anthology. Great job!
4.5 stars. Only read JMac's story. Short and sweet, though it didn't satisfy my need for more of her books! I guess I just have to wait a little longer!
Even though I picked this one up to initially only read Invaluable, I did enjoy the other novellas I read. I still have to say, Kyle is my absolute favorite SEAL! I need more ;)
