Oh I love that cover, not too pretentious, but I don't think it suits the book. If I'm being honest I'm not sure the title fits the book either but maybe I'm missing something? First time reading this author so really wasn't sure what I was going to get.
This starts like so many other books that I have read so right from the first chapter I was semi-groaning and thinking I was going to get a run of the mill, clichéd, done to death kind of book. I ate my words, for a little while at least. The end of the first chapter surprised me a bit and I actually burst out laughing. With relief or what I'm not sure. I was so glad to see that scenario end differently.
There's a decent enough story in here in the form of Bleu, Jack, Axel and the gang. Bleau's once perfect relationship with her brother has hit rock bottom and she is struggling to come to terms with the way her life so quickly spiralled out of control. Most of the characters in the book have issues of some form and the character development was done well. However I got the feeling this book wanted to be badass but couldn't quite achieve that. The characters have such soft sides to them at times that all the hard work in making them appear larger than life with all the swearing, tantrums and past history was swallowed up and overshadowed. There's a nice, slow, steady build up to Blea and Jacks relationship but the virginity thing confused me, I don't think it was ever properly discussed as to why she wanted to wait. For making it such a big deal theis should have been clearer. The story got a bit slow around the middle for me but I didn't feel it was too much of a chore to continue, it still held my attention and thankful to say - no skimming. I felt the ending with Axel and his problems were swept up and finished off a little too quickly, in fact I felt that the last part of the book was a little rushed. I sensed an underlying message about stereotyping in between the lines here, what with all the descriptions of the types of people sitting in the waiting room at the tattoo shop. Jack and his past, the way he looks etc
I have a few things that really annoy me when reading because I see it in almost every second book I pick up and it's getting so old now (I'm sorry) "I released the breath that I didn't realise I was holding" Gah, I wish authors would find another way to say this. The other thing which I noticed (though did not annoy me) was the conversations between characters. In places it was far too proper for the kind of people they were being portrayed as, and who speaks like that anyway. You know "I can not" when someone would just say "can't" And there were one or two inconsistencies in here, little things but again little things a reader would probably pick up on.
Overall, not a bad story. I was certainly interested in it and finished it. It definitely surprised me in a good way! But it fell flat in places and that disappointed me as I thought I'd found a little gem. I do want to read more from this author and I will as I think there's room for growth here. 3 1/2 to 4 stars
