First, let me state that in all the years I have been using Goodreads, I have never written a less than glowing review. Then again, as that saying goes, there is a first time for everything.

Second, I AM well aware of the fact that I AM not a published author. I wrote an article which was included in an anthology and maintain two blogs, but as far as a book, I have not written one. All this is why I feel very uncomfortable about leaving such a mixed/bad review. Nonetheless, I shall get over it.

My copy of "Dark Goddesses," by Mari Silva has a grand total of 162 pages, including end pages. It is a good book for anyone who either has no experience with Dark Goddesses, knows very little about Them, and/or wants to learn more about Them, as well as working with Dark Goddesses. This is what makes it a good primer on Dark Goddess lore. And that is where the hits stop.

This is not only the first time I have written a mixed/bad review, it is the first time I have given a book I have read less than five stars. That alone speaks volumes.

So, here are my issues with this book:

A. In Chapter 3: Egyptian Goddesses, it begins with: "When one thinks of ancient Egyptian deities, only a few come to mind, like Cleopatra, Nefertiti, and Tutankhamun." Really? I have never read that Cleopatra, Nefertiti and Tutankhamun were Deities. Deified, perhaps; Deities, NO. Incidentally, my Primary Pantheon is the Kimetic, or Ancient Egyptian Pantheon, and I AM familiar with many, if not all, of the Neteru, the collective name of the Goddesses and Gods of Ancient Egypt.

B. Regarding the "Tables of Correspondences," the entry for Persephone lists one of Her equivalent Goddesses as the Goddess more commonly known as Isis. Uh, no. First, my Mother Goddess Is the Goddess more commonly known as Isis. Looking at their stories, one would be very hard-pressed to consider Persephone and Isis equivalents. The only main theme they have in common is The High Priestess Card of the Tarot. The "Mythic Tarot," by Juliet Sharman-Burke has Persephone on The High Priestess Card. Also, many other Tarot Decks depict Isian imagery, such as a Moon, a scroll, the colors blue and white, etc. The only other detail which would make Persephone and Isis equivalents are their Grecian connection, as Isis was the name the Ancient Greeks gave to the Ancient Egyptian Goddess Auset, one of several ancient names for the Goddess more commonly known as Isis.

C. Not one book was listed. I have read books that can be categorized under Goddess Studies, Goddess Mysteries, etc., for more than twenty years, and in virtually all of them, BOOKS are listed. The "References" section ONLY lists Web pages and Web links. Not one book; no "When God Was a Woman," by the late and great Merlin Stone, no books by Z. Budapest, Starhawk, etc. What the hell?!

D. I visited one link, which was listed underneath an art image to see if the link listed the artist's name. The link was invalid. Granted, the book was published in 2024, and things can change, but seriously, not even a full year after being published, and we have a dead link?

I could go on and on, but I shall stop here. And please, do not get me started on the typos!

Frankly, I strongly recommend that if one wants to learn more about Dark Goddesses, one is better off going to another book.

Dark Goddesses! What fun!
When I saw the title "Dark Goddesses," I knew I wanted to learn more! I am not familiar with most mythologies. I didn't realize how little I knew!
This book provides a thorough introduction to the myths of dark goddesses from many cultures. I hadn't heard of most of them, but it was fun to learn the basics of each goddess and why people may feel compelled to connect with them.
Silva's writing style provides an easy-to-understand format ideal for the complete novice to the subject. A multi-page references section is included at the end of the book, which will be useful for further exploring the dark goddesses I feel most connected to.
I found the book to be exciting and a fun read!

This book is a must if you're interested in learning about the Divine Feminine and the Dark Goddess, both terms that have been popularised for some time in social media. It's important to know that, to work with a Dark Goddess you must be prepared to work with your shadow self, to rediscover yourself and to get to know the goddess your interested in because it is a mutual relationship established in respect that will give you the tools for growth and self-love. The author gives you the basics to get to know what we call today the "Dark Goddesses", how to establish a connection and recognise their call.

Dark Goddesses was truly educational of these powerful kick-ass Goddesses. A line that stuck out to me said along the lines of, depending on how patriarchal the place is, depends on whether they view the goddesses as dark. A lot of the light or good that many of the named Goddesses do and did were news to me until reading this, especially about Lilith. It made me grateful to read this book.

Audio book - Why didn't the author hire a female voice actor? It seems that it would have made more sense considering the content. The male narrator uses a "radio/game show host" voice. Frequently he uses high rising intonation (HRI) aka. uptalking the last syllable of sentence. It's distracting.

I have a passion for the Goddesses and studying them, but this book falls flat.

This is a comprehensive book about dark Goddess mythology across varying cultures and ways to commune and associate. Because it's so full of variety, there's not much space to go in-depth with each one, but it is still reasonably informative. I listened to the audiobook (the narration was awful, thus the one point off) and plan to purchase the book for reference.

This is an AI generated book. The content is basically Wiki pages glued together. It contains errors in facts, spelling, grammar, typos - do editors even exist anymore?
