I’ve done everything wrong, until now. Feeling more alone than ever, I need to lead my people in this new barbaric world, defend them against the power hungry senator, and shield them even from themselves.
Sometimes redemption is found in your darkest moments.
Update: Ok, here's the thing....this was a really great series. Reminded me a lot of Ilona Andrews writing style. The romance was a slow burn...they were attracted and their were feelers but issues kept them apart longer than necessary but HOT DAMN when it happened it was amazeballs. But it was too quick. I prefer more details in my smut, especially with how long it took for them to finally get to it. It actually detracted from the story a bit because I was just as frustrated as they were and it was starting to get to me. Really.
The heroine is bitchy, snarky, neurotic, fearless to the point of idiocy, ballsy, annoying, immature and emotional stunted. I liked her IMMENSELY. The hero was a egotistical, bossy bastard!! I luuuurved him!
The world of Alchemy is fresh and new, it was definitely something I've never read though again their are similarities between this and KD. But the ending was completely thrown together. She saved the day and the next page the book ended and you're left wondering wtf just happened. There was no closure, no real resolution and you're left with more questions than answers. I found it very unsatisfying and pissed off. I LOVED this series and the author ruined it for me it 2 short pages. I will try her other (Karma) series because I really liked her style of writing and the way she brings her characters to life. However, if she ends that one like this I may have to send her a strongly worded tweet. Strongly worded, I say!!!
9/29/15 Well, that was a HUGE let down to a really amazing series. Gotta love a quickly thrown together ending. (No, no I don't) Review to follow once I can wrap my brain around that pile of fuckery.
So much pointless drama! If Jo and Cormac would have simply talked to each other many of their problems would have been solved. No I did not appreciate what Cormac did at the beginning of the book, but I figured he had a good reason for it. Jo had the right to be mad. She took it too far and ended up acting childish.
Jo was the most special snowflake of them all in this installment. There wasn’t anything she couldn’t do. Although she lacked training, she always managed to pull off some phenomenal magical feat when necessary. When Cormac was away every guy around expressed interest in her. She just wasn’t worthy of that kind of attention. I liked Cormac better before he started drinking the Jo is awesome kool aid. I like Jo but she’s not amazing.
The ending was rushed. The whole book was building up to a battle when it was suddenly over. Once I saw what the resolution to everything was I wondered why that hadn’t been done a book or two ago. Nothing was left open ended, but an epilogue would have been nice just to know a little more about how they fared in the future.
I skipped to the end of this just to knock it off my pile! As I said liked book 1 book 2 was ok and books 3 & 4 were just drawn out and pointless! I suggest you read book 1 as a standalone and just right the rest off!
Redemption book 4 - the last book in The Alchemy Series
The story starts with a heart broken, brave faced Jo as Cormac has left her without an explanation or reassurance of a return and the panic of abandonment after giving her heart to Cormac have settled in.
Jo in her usual default defence mode puts up a front of strength and nonchalance to hide her vulnerability of abandonment and her broken heart seeps through the pages as we learn more of her memory of the separation and the hurt she feels. Add to the exhausted battle to keep control over the casino with all the extra fae and wolves who have taken up refuge via the portal Jo does her best to calm dominate, highly strung, testosterone fuelled males who push her to her limits for ruling the masses and for her attention – again reminding her of the hole in her heart.
Not only that, the Changed have now started to fight for supremacy, dominance and power status that seems to be a frequent entertainment for all and in true Jo fashion she has her charm and wit as her other default setting that will put at least a smile, if not an escapable laugh from its readers.
Jo is still trying to figure out who she is and what she can do with the magic cursing through her and how to defeat the senator – who at the moment has settled for a truce in the hope that with Cormac out the way, he can step in - though how long can she trust him to keep it and not wage war on the rest of the population is anyone’s guess unless you read this book!
There is never a dull moment in this book, near death, kidnapping, an unexpected delivery! A marriage! and figuring out the what, where, when why and who’s is just some of the things you will come across as well as the mystery, humour, heartache, action and twists and turns that will keep you hooked to this book – true to Donna’s writing style in Jo’s POV.
I enjoyed this series and I would have loved to have read more and maybe Donna could have put more stuff into the pages, bulked it out a little with more explanations or added a little more rawness to the emotions coming across the pages or maybe extending the ending – but that is my insatiable addiction to this story – and let’s face it, it’s always sad reading the last book of a series.
Hopefully Donna will continue with the Obsidian Souls series (highly recommended) or write new material??? Either way I will look forward to reading more from Donna in the future.
This series had a ton of potential, but unfortunately lacked in delivery. I did not rate any of the other books, but will only leave a final review on the last book and sum of the general feel as to why the lack of stars in my opinion. Editing is not only important for grammatical errors but for story flow, dialogue, and plot. If someone did edit any of these books, they should be fired. The story jumped from one place to the next without a clear flow of things to come. For instance, we meet Dark, who is going to decode the werewolves book, that Cormac and Jo nearly died trying to get, and then NOTHING. What did the book say? What did Dark come up with when decoding it all? Why did they risk getting killed and possibly starting a war for a book that literally has no purpose to the series? THERE IS NO ANSWER! Then Dark is kind of mentioned here and there as becoming "a part of the family." BUT he is literally not in the book. Jo mentions him in passing in about 2-3 sentences and then all of the sudden, the next book rolls around and he's one of the main characters. The Jo and Cormac relationship was good, it could have been GREAT! Why can he find her wherever she is? Because of a contract that was destroyed, but not really destroyed. What does it all mean? Why are these points so important to the story and then..... nothing. The world building lacked, there was really no "seeing what the author is portraying through words." I know what Vegas looks like, BUT there wasn't enough there for me to fully see what kind of world they were living in. I wouldn't recommend this series to anyone UNLESS you need a 2 day quick read, but beware.
There is a lot of drama in this book, Jo and Cormac just can not be happy for more than a minute. Seriously, if it isn't her angst, it is his.
Once again everything is from her POV, so we have no idea what the big lug is thinking. It really limits the reader and leaves you to wonder, until Jo is told what is happening.
I really wanted to love this book, but there was more drag in the story than I generally like. We could have skipped much of the moping and posturing, it has all been done before. Jumping to the last third of the book brings the whole thing to a head. The battle could have been longer and more indepth. I was fine with the final resolution.
There is a bit of smexy, but not much. Just enough detail to make it NC-17 but not as far as an erotic read. The romance has build to this point, I would have liked a more hot bedroom action!! Cormac has definite Dom tendencies!!
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Laurel Schroeder, who is great. I love all the sass she add to Jo and the gruffness of Cormac. Great pace that keeps the story moving and accentuates the action scenes. She is terrific and a real credit to the series. I loved the emotion she was able to infuse into the read. I will definitely look for more of her work!
Overall I enjoyed the series, I just wish there were more of the aftermath. Fill us in on all the supporting characters we have come to love.
Disclosure - I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts, opinions and ratings are my own.
I've taken some time after I finnished this to think about what I thought, to give it a fair review.
For me, book #4, Redemption, was more like book #2 on my "fantasy scale". I prefer PNR (what I define as PNR). IMO, this serie is a mix of PNR and fantasy (again, what I define these as. Not sure if the experts define it the same way) For me the serie has had pieces of both, and sometimes it has been to much fantasy for my taste. I've continued Reading because I liked the writing and the pnr in the books. The serie is a good serie, no doubt about that, but since I am not the biggest fantasy fan, and book #4 was more fantasy-ish than the others, I only rate it 3. It was too much for me with the owls and the people who changed into a melting pot of colors and creatures. Also, the highlight of the book came and went way to fast (Senators death).
I would've wished for one or two bi-stories in the last book. You only get a small taste of the other characters, and I wanted more.(I'm book-spoiled, what can I say?) The book started getting really good at the point where Cormac returns. Not because I'm a "I'd drop my panties in one second if I saw Cormac"-girl,although I am, but because that was simply the turning point in the book for me.
I still can't get over how damn surprising it all started, with the headshot in book 1.

After building up to a battle for the last three books, this was huge letdown. If the main character could have resolved this so easily, why didn't she do it way before now? So many loose ends, so many unresolved issues. Feels like the author just got tired of the series and ended it easiest and fastest way possible.
It took me a long time to get through this series. I love Donna Augustine’s Wild & Ollie Wit books. My biggest problem was with Jo. She was so damned wishy washy & the story was so bogged down with the back and forth between her & Cormac. It was like a broken record and got boring. I found Jo to be insufferable at times. I get that she has emotional/relationship issues, but some of her choices were nuts. Like how she got mad when Cormac left for a few months but wasn’t she going to leave at the end of the 3rd book before Burrum saved her? So many problems between her and Cormac could have been solved by simply communicating like adults. I thought there was so much potential in this story and wanted so badly to like it. I honestly could not figure out why Cormac put up with Jo, let alone fell in love with her. And sooo many guys fell in love with her: The senator, Crash, Burrum...!
My other problem with this series was the ending. I wonder if there will be a spin off series, but we (the reader) went through so much over the last 4 books & the ending was so abrupt! What happened to everyone? Did Dodd ever come back? Though, honestly I feel like Dodd and Buzz were the same character. So many questions at the end. How did they live after the senator was gone? Sure some flowers grew, but what else? Lots of things weren’t explained either. Like what exactly were rippers? How did the senator control Jo’s friend? Oh! And speaking of Jo’s friend, that love triangle made me so freaking mad. How terrible of Cormac to peruse Jo’s only friend to make her jealous and because he couldn’t keep it in his pants. That was pretty damned shitty to say the least. He’s been alive a long time, you’d think he’d have more class then that. Lastly, what the heck was even going on with Cormac? What exactly was he before and after the shattering? So so many questions in this story that I wish there was an epilogue. Maybe I missed some because I just started skimming after a while to finish it.
I do love Donna Augustine’s other work and will read everything she writes, but this one wasn’t my favorite. Go read the Wilds series if you haven’t. I pictured Daliah like Rapunzel from the Disney movie but with normal long, red hair. I thought their personalities were similar and it made me like Daljah more after I made that association.

Here we go again. The first chapter kicks off with drama: Cormac leaves Josephine. Heartbroken and facing the arrival of the Fae and wolves, Josephine is forced to take on Cormac’s responsibilities. And she doesn’t hold back. She works hard to earn the respect of those living in the casino-turned-castle. So, when Cormac finally returns, what do you expect? Of course, Josephine’s furious.
On top of their strained relationship, there’s a looming threat from the senator, unrest brewing in the castle, and another of Josephine’s hidden talents coming to light, all of which shape this into an intriguing read.
I’m also glad the talking bugs and animals made it into the final book. While they don’t play a huge role, they add flavour by showcasing the strange, mutated world, and they step in as spies during the final act. Still, I wish they’d had a more meaningful presence in Josephine’s life.
That said, I was disappointed with the ending. After all that buildup, the climactic battle felt rushed and underwhelming. An epilogue would be nice to show more of the new world without the senator, what happened with Dodd and the baby Harvey, and what became of those who didn’t side with Josephine in the fight, especially the Fae and the wolves. Their fate deserved some closure.
Overall, the Alchemy series has been a fun read with plenty of excitement, creativity, badass characters, and slow-burn romance. For that, I’ll be checking out the author’s other series, starting with Karma.
Well, as a series it wasn't terrible. It was interesting to follow along, and a easy read if you're bored. But Augustine needs to work on her book endings asap. Every installment was left unfinished- something akin to watching Chinese dramas that just cue to credits as soon as 45 minutes have passed. But still, Redemption was surprisingly my favorite of the four. I really enjoyed reading about life without Cormac- I finally felt like I was getting a better grasp on Jo and her power and her badass abilities without getting distracted by all of the incessant domineering that Cormac brought to the table.
Jo without Cormac is badass. Jo with Cormac has confectionary powers, wallflower, and is an obnoxious complainer.
I wish they told us what happened to the Vitro's fae and the waolves that abandoned them in their time of need. Because as much as Jo and Cormac like to posture their strength and etc. they were pretty screwed over by their guests. A. They stole rations from them regularly. B. They complained bitterly and were usually mollified. C. They ditched their hosts. D. They broke rules ALL THE TIME.

This whole Alchemy series was exciting, intriguing, thought provoking, heartbreaking and heartwarming. The author, Donna Augustine, has an astounding imagination. My favorite books are ones where the female protagonist has a little something extra, in this case, a lot of something extra; magic. Jo has such heart and bravery, but she feels that practically every decision she makes has turned out to be the wrong decision. I think most of us can relate to doing what we feel is right, but things not turning out how we thought they would. I was very excited with how Jo found out she wasn’t quite human. That’s about the time she met a man she couldn’t take her eyes off of. Their relationship was about as rocky as most everyone’s is, so it was easy to relate. There are so many beings that Jo discovers, and I felt as if I were seeing them for the first time too. There are so many heartbreaking moments, but so much strength in all of the characters. This series was a delight to read, and I highly recommend it.
I really did like the book, but I didn't like the first 30-40%... who wants to read the book without Cormac in it?
I did really appreciate the strong lead Jo was given to show herself as a leader, but come on... she needed to stop panting and raving about what she wanted, what didn't want, as it was so beyond obvious that it was gonna happen. It just got really annoying - I get being angry at him leaving so suddenly, but for someone you love, you would soon understand why. It got a bit too much for me. Plus, it’s Cormac, who would me bad if Cormac got you to marry him? Gah, I wouldn’t 😍
But, I really did like it, but it reminded me a lot of Ollie Wit, another series of hers. I've also read the Wilds, and it just seems like the author is into difficult men, and women who don't know what they want.
I still liked it. I was just happy they were on for sure at the end.

The MC's (Jo and Corbac) did begin to irritate after a while. Jo with her stubborn childish attitude and Corbac with his stubborn domineering attitude. Their on-off , hot/cold bickering almost made me DNF on the second and third book. (I obviously didn't but it was not due to the writing, but more due to not having anything else to read at the time )
The ending well , there's definitely a feeling of a HEA but its not 100% conclusive or maybe I just don't really care anymore. As far as the big baddie goes, well that part of the ending was kind of a anti-climax, it worked for the series but I just personally felt it was a bit undramatic considering all the drama that led up to battle.
After the darker books in the middle of this series and the beginning of this book, we finally see Light triumph! I love action, adventure, and romance. This series melded these with an imaginative plot to create an inspired concept of death and renewal. It shows in exaggerated scale the fight of light and dark going on in our world today, and does so beautifully. If you are a very sensitive soul, read this knowing that it is an extreme version of this fight, and may be traumatic in certain parts. Otherwise, enjoy.
There is just nothing I don't like about Augustine's writing. Her women are snarky (sometimes a bit too much so) independent and FUNNY. Her male lead is always mysterious and totally smitten. Jo knows she has some kind of talent that draws some characters and follow her. She doesn't know how or why. She was abandoned as an infant, she has no where she is from. She is intrigued by Cormac, who owns the casino everyone in the area still alive has taken refuge in. A great story, a terrific romance and a very very funny story. Six stars.
So the final book is complete and I know there's been some that feel like it wasn't a good ending but I think it is because it fits the whole series. It's never been sunshine and roses, so I didn't expect the last one to be either. Yes, our lovebirds didn't fix everything till the end but it made sense after what happened, plus, it's who they are.
This novel tied up most of the loose threads gathered over this series, combining to form a tapestry of a changed world, a new order and the promise of love. While not quite as good as some of her other collections, it was still a decent run she seems to lay groundwork for other stories.
This series could have been amazeballs but......I spent so much time thinking about how much better this or that could be that it detracted from the story. Unnecessary drama and then WTAF that’s the end??? Really?? Wait, no! *me smirking to myself waiting for that last thing to pop out and go boo! It’s not really that easy*** sadly my smirk was waisted-THE END.
Nothing i can say positice about this book or the series. Being free I tried all 4 and speed flipped through them all. Is it the genre? On/off, repetative chapters of relationship of protag and her preferred significant other. Ot's a go! Oops, it' s off, repeat endlessly. Add a chaotic storyline and U get what you pay for..,
I started with the first book in this series. Just finished this one, the last book in the series. Could not read fast enough. I highly recommend this book series. Donna Augustine never disappoints.
This book was FANTASTIC! I absolutely love everything about it and this ending was pretty much the perfect way to end a great series. I read all four books in 24 hours, and I regret nothing. Absolutely recommend this book.
Even though there were some loose ends that I hope get solved in some standalone books of their own, I loved this series. Little they became a family allowing Jo to care for them and be loved.
Donna Augustine, master-level world builder, has taken her world and systematically destroyed it in Redemption, the last installation of the Alchemy series. Alone and broken-hearted Jo Davids is left holding the pieces the world together. Jo has taken the helm of Cormac’s team but is filled with doubt at every move as she works to keep the world from breaking apart any more than it has. Through this last book, Jo learns just how strong she can be when there are no other options.
I simply love the Alchemy series. This last book was so different from how the series began, I can honestly say it kept me guessing at every turn and I was angry at Cormac for his disregard for our heroine Jo. Redemption was a great conclusion to the series, I’m so glad I stumbled upon it.
