After a bloody tour in Afghanistan with a Marine Recon unit, then a short career with the NYPD, Francois Dupont battles alcoholism, drugs and PTSD. When a childhood friend and brother of a deceased army buddy asks Francois to find their sister Jasmine "Jazz", Francois sees an opportunity for redemption. Finding the twenty-two year-old woman is easy. Shaking the shadowy tails following them from New Orleans back to Brooklyn is proving more difficult. The mob is convinced Jazz has the Devil's Eye—a 3000 year old gem with reputed powers. The DOD isn't far behind, intent on acquiring and weaponizing the radiation emitted by The Eye, at any cost. The secret to The Eye's location lies somewhere in Jazz's haunted past. But can Francois get to the gem before the enemy claims it and the only woman he's ever cared for? I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. I am giving this book 4 1/2 stars. For me this book was a slow build, but I came to understand that the author wanted us to, not only get to know our heroes, but to care about them too. The author is very descriptive in his settings of New York and in the bayou of Louisiana, which is good for me. The more descriptive, the happier I am. This book is about 2 P.I.s that were former Marine Recon soldiers. Francois and Ike take a case involving doing a favor for a childhood friend. They are to find his sister and bring her back to the bayou. Just this simple premise starts a whole chain of events that nearly destroys everyone including Francois and Ike. I really came to care about these 2 P.I.s and when the crap hits the fan...let's just say my concern about their safety rose higher. I also appreciated the strong female that the author wrote into this story. Janet is very capable and brings her own skills to help these 2 out. I look forward to reading more from Patrick Astre featuring these 3 people. My only complaint is that we never found out why that NYPD detective was pulled from investigating Janet's brother's murder. It's a loose end and I don't like loose ends. (Maybe it's because I immediately connected with this detective and knew he was not only smart, but a good guy, too.)
