Star Commandos #11

Pariah: Star Commandos Book 11

Rate this book
While traveling to Hedon for a much needed furlough of R&R, the unit is stranded on Elaine of Avalon when their fighter encounters mechanical problems. As they begin making repairs, Varn Tarl Sogan, former admiral and still War Prince of the Arcturian Empire, finds that he is none too welcome. An escalating conspiracy is formed to humiliate, injure, and finally destroy him and his comrades. Yet the greatest danger on Elaine of Avalon may not be its human inhabitants, but the monstrous creatures of its barracands, nine to sixty-foot eating machines; and an over one-hundred-fifty-foot leviathan with teeth the size of sabers. From every quarter the Commandos must defend one another from a hostile populace and a deadly environment if they are to escape back into the safety of space, and it is obvious on all too many occasions that they may well not succeed.

Bigots are bigots are bigots are bigots. Poor Varn - he keeps running into the unheroic who seem to think that they have to be loudly bigoted because they did not serve on the front lines. I am always struck by how the loudest against certain groups of people are the ones who did not fight them in war, but rather stayed home. Something for me to guard against .... At any rate, that bigoted hardheadedness led to one of the funniest scenes I have been privileged to read (the part about the family pet) - you have to read it for yourself, because it is too funny to take out of context!

This whole series is a fun sci-fi romp from an author who is local to me. Worth the read!
