Told from the perspective of 13-year-old CJ, this short zombie story is gripping and well written. CJ is leading a normal life when the ZA breaks out in his town, forcing his family to flee to the vacation cabin for safety. The story slowly builds to frantic pace, as first the family slowly plans and packs, and then runs out of town when the shamblers hit the neighborhood. I wanted to yell at CJ and his family, "get in the damn car already!"
CJ is a 13 yr old boy who was thrown unexpectedly into the world of zombies. This short story was written via his perspective. Ending CJ’s adventure on a cliffhanger made this the perfect teaser to Josh Vasquez’s full novel. He certainly got me wanting to read more.
I chose to give this book five starts, because it captured my attention from beginning to end. I loved how the book really kept you wondering what happened next. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes suspense, and the thrill of a good book.
didn't realize it was a couple of short stories. not my first choice in books but if these make it to full length books, I will definitely give them another look
It's essentially the story of a kid whose father is ex-military, now a pastor's assistant, and his family is now under attack by zombies. But not to worry! The father has an arsenal in a safe in his closet that is full of rifles and pistols and even an AK-47. Now I know that you can legally own the rifles and pistols, but there are a lot of laws regarding AK-47's in the US. Just being ex-military does not clear you for owning one of these weapons. Moving right along, the son is pretty much an expert sniper with his little .22 caliber rifle and it is later hinted that his little 8-year old sister also has some expertise with firearms.
I have no problem with a 13-year old using a firearm responsibly like this character does. Heck if I am not mistaken, you can get a hunting license at that age in most states and most kids that age are old enough and responsible enough to own and operate firearms. But an 8-year old? That's where I have a little trouble believing it.
So the family escapes off to a little rural cabin that they have and they are safe. They are awaiting the arrival of another member of their family named Josh. The story ends here after only 3 chapters and it's a little disappointing. I would have liked to know what happened next to these characters.
First this was a super short novella, not a book. Second, the main character is supposed to be a kid but it was fairly unbelievable as he has the emotional maturity of an 80 year old with 30 years of therapy under his belt. And the life skills of a 30 year old. Just couldn’t buy him as real. But good zombies.
