Demeter, a Kindred and ancient Greek Goddess that helped to rule the world thousands of years ago with her Pairbond Vedya, brother of Galen. Both translated to The Realm, a hidden place of magic by their sworn enemy Vicar, who had used The Book of The Way to reduce them to lesser beings, neither mortal nor Angel, nor Kindred.

This is known to Vicar’s Church of The Way as the time of redemption and reconciliation. Long foretold throughout the millennia. Stephen and Faith are taking their first steps in The Church. Faith will become one of The Blackhearts of Innocence, protectors of the church through whatever means necessary., while Stephen, accompanied by Galen will vanish from the face of the world after reaching the highest Church level of Saint.
All of these characters will be drawn together at Vicar’s grand casino called The Mountain, where the fate of the world and its people will be determined.

There will be only one Redeemer.

This is a fascinating story.

This is a kind of a collection of parables (all related), not from the Bible, Talmud, or Koran, but from the Book of the Way. I specifically list these religious texts because, in essence, this story is based on a monotheism where the one true god is The Goddess.

The intricacies of this story cannot be fairly summed up in one simple review. Perhaps the author can apply for a volume in Cliff’s Notes. In any case, this is a complex tale; one so complex, I got lost a few times trying to follow it. While the writing is concise and in some places beautiful, the formatting was confusing and the narrative wasn’t consistent. The first 8 or 9% of the story reads like actual religious text. I’m not sure how the print version comes off, but the red dialog font in the ebook was stressful on my eyes. (Needless to say, there is no red text in my Bible.)

Usually a fan of flashbacks and foreshadowing, I feel like this story abused them a bit. The passages were often very long, and by the time I came to the end of it I couldn’t remember if it was present action or flashback. Also, the transformation of characters was a bit confusing. I typically enjoy a book with a large array and variety of characters, but when those characters keep changing form, it can be hard to remember which version of them I’m currently reading.

Despite all these distractions, I barreled through this story because I wanted too; no I needed too. Once I got passed the first 10% (that 1 or 2% after the religious text), I had to see it to the end. I had to understand all the mysteries and secrets, and see just how humanity would find its salvation. I found the overall experience to be rewarding. High points of the story were: discovery of the tree, seeing the Beloved break free, seeing Stephen and Faith unite, and so much more.

There are many rewarding moments to this story though I will not pretend that the appeal of this story will be universal. Anyone not a member of a popular monotheistic faith will likely love this or at lease appreciate it. After all, it does still touch on themes of faith, which some people are simply opposed to. Many faith believers of other monotheistic religions will reject this story, but I enjoyed it. I don’t mind looking into the belief system of someone else and appreciating what it means to them. If my own faith were to waiver, that would be my fault, and so far it hasn’t.

This is purely an adult read. Yes, there are scenes of nudity and sexual content, but nothing crass, or shocking, or more than you’d see on most cable programs (some of those cable programs would find this story tame).

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this ebook in exchange for my honest opinion, which has in no way affected the rating of this piece.
