OUR STORY A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies and Lonely Planet was born. One hundred million guidebooks later, Lonely Planet is the world’s leading travel guide publisher with content to almost every destination on the planet.
A really handy guide for pre-trip prep and getting a general feel for how things work ahead of time, and a great reference source on the fly once there. Having never visited Venice before, this guide was a fantastic resource if only for working out how public transport works! With so many options and costs and routes just to get to and from the airport, nevermind around the city itself, it’d be easy to come a cropper. Having read all the options in the days prior to my trip, I had no problems at all.
The guide is laid out in such a way that it’s easy to find what you’re looking for and is full of great tips for saving money when there €7.50 for a vaporetto trip, or €20 for a full day ticket. Or €30 for two days - no brainer and probably saved me a pretty penny. Thanks to the two day ticket we managed to travel the length of the Grand Canal (twice!), visited Lido, visited Murano, and got to where we wanted to go with no hassle at all. I had no clue what a vaporetto was before reading this guide! The prices were all accurate too.
The little section on common words and phrases - and now to pronounce them - was also a lovely touch.
A great resource. There was loads of stuff in here that I wasn’t interested in, but that’s just me. It’s certainly comprehensive and a mine of useful information.
All the information you need for your visit to Venice, including map of the water busses and a fold-out city map. Clear prioritization of highlights, which is essential for a city like Venice. Recommended if you're going to Venice.
Enjoyable. I didn't buy it predominantly for a trip. Just another to add to the collection I have. Having been here numerous times, it is very accurate
