Splintered: A Black Diamond Novel, Library Edition

Rate this book
Welcome to Black Diamond Resort and Spa —the best place to go when all you want to do is disappear and not have anyone expect anything of you.

Overwhelmed with work and feeling like I’m being pulled in multiple directions at once, I crave the serenity a private island holds for me. As a very recognizable figure in the adult film industry, I’m used to shelling out parts of myself for the sake of others. Everyone wants more pictures, videos, and more of my time and energy. Though I’ve created an empire that has made me lots of money in a business I enjoy, I still desire a break. Sandy beaches, fruity drinks, and turquoise waters are all I expected from this trip. I definitely didn’t anticipate running into my high school crush—the jock that never once looked at me the way I wanted him to. Jarrod Bivens is now the star goalie of the San Jose Bobcats, and the person half the world is blaming for his team losing in the playoffs. Clearly here for his own escape, our chance encounter ignites an instant friendship. With each day on the island, I realize my crush is far from gone, but Jarrod’s known for only dating Hollywood starlets, so he’s obviously straight. Maybe those lingering gazes and small touches are all in my head. But one day, something interesting arises between us—a moment I couldn’t have prepared myself for. Our mounting tension finally snaps, but little did I know it was only the beginning of a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Our chemistry is undeniable, but the real world awaits, and life off the island is bound to be much different. How can two people from completely different worlds ever make it work?

This book is about Devin and Jarrod. Devin is the son of Hollywood acting icons, but he decides to go into porn to spite his famous parents and doesn’t look back. After years in the industry and becoming one of the most successful porn stars with his own production company and various other streams of income, Devin just doesn’t feel that fulfilled. He’s not sure what happiness feels like.

So, he decides to take some time for himself and goes to Black Diamond for a vacation. Basically, right after he arrives Devin runs into Jarrod Bivens, an old high school crush. Jarrod went to the island to escape media scrutiny after losing a playoff game. He’s the goalie for a popular hockey team.

These two haven’t seen each other in over a decade, but they recognize each other and Jarrod takes it upon himself to see if Devin wants to hang out. They start spending time together almost every day and they're really enjoying themselves.

“I don’t know what you’ve done to me,” he whispers huskily into my neck. “You take my breath away while simultaneously granting me exactly what I need to feel alive.”

The chemistry is there from the start, but Jarrod is straight. He’s never been into guys before, but something about Devin just keeps catching his eye. He’s a bit mesmerized by him.

His jaw is set tight, and he’s gnawing on his lower lip. I want to save it. Pull it from his teeth and soothe it with my tongue. I don’t even try to make sense of my thoughts anymore. I want him in a way I can’t explain, in a way I’m not sure I even understand, but god do I want him.

Eventually, these two can’t resist each other anymore. They move beyond friendship and are so hot and sensual together.

“You’re so fucking incredible.” “You are,” I reply. “You’re doing so good.” His eyes close and his head drops back. “Oh god. Don’t praise me.” “Not your thing?” I ask, bringing one hand down to grab his. “No, I think I just found out it is.” “Mmm.”

But this is all very new to Jarrod. He’s not out and Devin sees the writing on the wall. Devin is scared of getting hurt and decides to end things before they even have a chance to start.

They go their separate ways after their time at the resort. Jarrod has a new season to get ready for and Devin has his business to get back to. The agony I felt after this separation was intense. There is so much angst and pining. It was almost hard to read. My heart was breaking for them.

I want you more than I can explain, and that’s why I’m hesitant. Taking steps toward you is easy, but it’s the walk away from you that kills me. Every time I do it, another piece of my heart breaks off and I’m not sure how many more times I can do it before it stops beating entirely.

Fortunately, for all of us, fate has other ideas and keeps having them run into each other. Eventually, they decide to try and see where things go. This was such a well-earned HEA. It was a joy to read even through all the heartbreak. The epilogue was super satisfying.

I grin, my lips stretching across my face as my heart hammers against my ribs. “I think my brain is malfunctioning. What are you doing?” He leans in close, our noses almost touching. “I’m loving you.”

❝I have a secret,❞ I whisper against his mouth.
❝Hmm?❞
❝I don’t think I’ve ever been this happy.❞

this was simply amazing. i've never read one of Isabel Lucero's books before so i wasn't quite sure what to expect, but this book completely blew me away with how basically perfect everything was. there's nothing better in a book for me than when you are equally invested in the main characters as a couple but also them as individuals. and that's exactly how this book was. they both had their own separate journeys to overcome while also trying to get through the obstacles of their relationship together. it felt like i was right along side them bc all their emotions and struggles felt so real and raw. it came to the biggest surprise to me bc while this was low angst, it was so emotional! my heart hurt for them. they are both truly lovable characters who i have come to cherish and i was able to connect with them easily. when you read this, you will not want anything else besides them getting their HEA.

❝I don’t know what you’ve done to me,❞ he whispers huskily into my neck. ❝You take my breath away while simultaneously granting me exactly what I need to feel alive.❞

Devin is the son of two famous Hollywood celebrities but he decided not to follow in his parents footsteps and go into the adult entertainment industry. now he's a famous porn star and has created a huge name for himself. he's achieved so much but he's not truly happy and he wants to settle down. however, that's not easy when people are constantly taking interest in him only for sex and are not comfortable dating him bc of his job. so he decides to take a vacation at Black Diamond where he runs into his old high school crush, Jarrod. Jarrod is a famous hockey player for an NHL hockey team. his team just lost the playoffs and bc he's the goalie, his is taking the brunt of the scrutiny.

my one complaint (a very tiny minuscule one) is that it took me a bit to get into. but once i got to a certain point, i was loving absolutely everything. i decided to take only a half a star off bc my niggle became almost nonexistent. as i read through to the end, everything had to happen the way it did. the slightly slow start of them becoming friends, the pacing of Jarrod's bi-awakening, the amount of pining, both of their hesitancies on having a relationship outside of Black Diamond, Jarrod's coming out, the time it took for them to finally come together, all the decisions they made, all the pacing was perfect and every moment and word felt necessary. you really get a clear insight into both of their thinking processes and decision-making and bc of that, i could empathize and understand both of their sides.

My phone rings as I’m getting gas two hours from home. It’s a FaceTime call from Jarrod.
❝Hey,❞ I say, answering with a smile.
You’re stunning.❞

how freaking cute is that? 😭😭😭 there were plenty of tender and sweet moments between them, and the spice was absolute fire. then with the little praise kink thrown in there? literal perfection. every time Devin gave Jarrod a little praise, it made me weak in the knees. they just loved each other so hard and so good and i adored their love. just the way both of them expressed how they never felt like this about anyone else before >>>>> it's been a while since a book gave me the feeling of not wanting it to end. i could read countless books about them. what makes this book especially good, is that the HEA is hard earned and so satisfying.

what to expect:
🏝️ hockey player x porn star
🏝️ secret relationship
🏝️ bi-awakening
🏝️ coming out
🏝️ a secret crush that never really went away
🏝️ hella pining, like TOP TIER pining
🏝️ low angst, but so emotional
🏝️ high steam

Splintered is a beautiful slow-burn friends-to-lovers story that I am completely in awe of. This story takes its time to allow the bond and friendship between old classmates Jarrod and Devin to develop and grow organically. Their connection is immediate once they reunite and I loved seeing both slowly fall for one another, which creates many moments of confusion and excitement. Devin and Jarrod are in quite a complex situation given their very specific professions, making any romance between the two very forbidden and controversial.

I love how both attempted to forget the other, but due to their immense need for the other, their desire to make their complicated situation work made for such a rewarding HEA.

Overall I loved this story. It is an epic romance that took me by surprise due to its ability in forming such a believable bond between Jarrod and Devin while taking me on an emotional journey that I could not get enough of. Loved this story so much!!!!

DNF at 40% - I just couldn't read anymore of this!! I feel like this is going to be a bitchy rant, but it's how trying to read this book made me feel unfortunately!

This is the exact reason I pretty much avoid multi-author series these days. You would think that the basic requirement of a multi-author series where all the books are set at the same resort is that the resort is in the same place. Every other book I've read from this series has stated that the Black Diamond resort is in the French Polynesia area of the world - this book however says that it's in the Caribbean. I may have a fear of flying, but my geography skills are pretty good and even I know that the Caribbean sea is not in the Pacific Ocean!! That was at 4% in to this book and it went downhill from there.

Devin is a famous pornstar but don't talk to him about it, or let him know you've watched him, or even consider watching him if you ever want a relationship of any kind with him in future....He clocked when people recognised him and seemed to like the attention and enjoy making them feel uncomfortable when they realised where they knew him from, but when he goes on a date with someone who clearly recognised him (and Devin knew he'd been recognised before agreeing to the date) and they mention while kissing him that they've wanted to do it for ages and they've watched his content, he acts as scandalised as a Victorian woman seeing a naked ankle!!! Devin does complain that men only want to use him to fulfill their fantasy and not get to know him BUT he literally goes on a date that is super awkward and he's not into it, yet willingly follows the guy to a secluded area and chooses to kiss him. Which he's cool with UNTIL the guy talks about the whole porn thing - enter the pearl clutching, wronged character! It made no sense to me especially when he already knew that the guy had recognised him, so presumably he's more than likely had a few fantasies about this ever happening in real life. You can't have your cake and eat it mate!

Then when his old school friend watches gay porn because he's questioning his sexuality since coincidentally reuniting with Devin, and finds out that Devin does porn, he watches because he's curious! When Devin finds out about it by walking in on him, it's like the guy has commited some heinous crime against him! I can't actually remember the other MCs name already, but he didn't do anything wrong! If Devin didn't want Dudebro to watch him, maybe he should have mentioned his job on the fifty million occasions the other MC asked him and he deflected; or he should have considered the fact that every other gay male in the resort seemed to know who he was, including the chatty bartender who Dudebro speaks to, so it was probably going to be mentioned at some point by accident!! The whole argument felt ridiculous. Devin doesn't seem to know what he wants, or he changes his mind every two minutes. Nothing made sense and it all felt like drama for the sake of it. The way Devin says he can't be with Dudebro because he's seen him in porn without Devin's permission just felt weird to me - what if he'd watched it before they reunited and it wasn't mentioned until they got together? Was Devin going to flip his lid because the other guy had seen the porn that he made and put out into the Universe, or does he think the internet is a magical place where no one will recognise him? So confused as to what his problem was - does he expect everyone who watches him to ask him for his permission to watch first?

I gave up when they reconcile after this argument by having Dudebro walk through a dangerous tropical storm to get to Devin's bungalow over the water. Then there's this awkward confession about how they're both into each other. Dudebro is scared because he's inexperienced and Devin is obviously really experienced, and he wanted to mention he'd discovered Devin when he was looking at porn, but because Devin hadn't mentioned it he didn't either. Devin's response just confused me even more and then it was like 'oh yay lets kiss' and I was over it.

I just.... literally don't know what to say! 40% of this book and I can safely say I don't think I've read anything this juvenile and ridiculous in ages, especially when both MCs are supposed to be about 30 and at the top of their careers in porn and hockey. It felt like reading thirteen year old besties squabbling, but not knowing why they're even arguing. They apparently both want the same thing but can't open their stupid mouths to say so!

If you are looking for a good, cohesive multi-author series where they all know the location the story universe is set in, then I really recommend the Franklin U series, the Christmas Falls series, and the Vino and Veritas series instead!

This was absolutely lovely!! I adore Jarrod and Devin so much! While this wasn’t super angsty, we certainly got a deeply emotional connection between two truly wonderful men!!

Devin and Jarrod may have kinda sorta knew each other in high school but in the 11 years that had passed, they were living very different lives. However, both were living a public life or at least had to maintain a certain persona. Their time a Black Diamond ended up being so much more than either anticipated but it wasn’t going to end well.

They had so much stacked against them but neither could move forward. They were stuck in their memories and their hearts were hurting. I loved how there wasn’t a simple answer, they really had to work through their own issues and decide what they truly wanted out of life and who they wanted by their sides.

The build up was perfectly paced and felt so organic. While we knew they would give into their feelings, it felt like every time they were together, they were falling deeper in love. They balanced each other so well! And the HEA was beautiful!!

I absolutely loved this. Jarrod and Devin really made me cry and swoon. Their chemistry was so good. The longing, the passion and the love, so so good. There is some light angst but eventually everything works out. This is one of those books that I couldn’t put down, I didn’t want the story to end, I enjoyed every single chapter. Loved the happy ending.

Emotionally hard-hitting, angsty, unexpected.

An adult film star & a hockey star fall for each other when they least expect it, at the Black Diamond Resort, while both escaping their usual worlds. They have a beautiful connection, but believe it can never work in the real world. Thank God they’re wrong.

This series has been absolutely fantastic. I’m not usually a fan of multi-author series, but this has been a wonderful surprise because most of the books have been fantastic, and as all standalones that didn’t need to be read in order, you can pick one up here & there.

“You’re the best thing to ever happen to me,” he says. “Honestly, if I lost everything else in my life, I’d be happy as long as I still had you. You’re what I’ve been seeking without even knowing.

I loved this. Everything was perfect. The pacing, the communication, and the characters. I was so invested in Jarrod and Devin getting together and living happily.

Then I ran into you.” He smiles, squeezing my hands. “And everything was easy. I didn’t care about work or previous hardships. I lived in the moment, for once. I fully enjoyed myself. And then once we got past you finding out about my work, and you didn’t judge or push me away, and you still wanted me, I couldn’t wrap my head around it. I struggled to believe someone could want me considering my job. You were perfect. You were the serenity I’d been looking for. It was never a place. It was you. I found my home in you.”

I love everything about this book, but one thing in particular I loved was the pacing. I loved seeing them be friends. Which is very weird, but I feel like every stranger to friends to lovers I read it never really shows them being friends. Like I loved how you read Jarrod slowly developing feelings for Devin. Also the patience that Devin had with Jarrod was great. Then the time after the Resort was done perfectly. The chance encounters they had that led to them talking again which led them to realize they fell for each other. Perfect.

“I’m so happy, Devin. I’ve never been happier than in this moment, and it’s not just because of the win, but it’s because I have you, too. I didn’t want to celebrate without you. I didn’t want to wait until we were alone to hug and kiss you. You’re my everything.”

I had so many highlights to the point where it was insane. I wish I could just highlight the entire book. I think this is my favorite from the series and it will probably stay that way for good reason.

Devin angles his head over his shoulder and smiles at me, the sun hitting his face and making it look like he’s glowing. He’s beautiful.

I was not expecting this story, it was so much more emotional and angsty than I had prepared for.

Devin and Jarrod, they are perfect together but a good example of when you fall hard without being ready for what that means.

I will not ruin it with hints and spoilers as it’s best experienced firsthand. But the position they find themselves in due to Jarrod’s career in ice hockey, and the life and attention of being an adult film star brings Devin. It’s quite the situation.

I really felt for Devin though as he fought to protect his heart.

Have to mention the steamy scenes were beautifully written and very hot.

Brilliant story, so engaging and compelling and a wonderful HEA.

I absolutely loved Devin and Jarrod slow burn story. It felt like they were meant to be.

A chance run in at the Black Diamond resort.
Jarrod is the best hockey goalie in the NHL and Devin is one of the most successful gay porn stars. Devin pretends he doesn’t know what Jarrod does and Jarrod has no clue what Devin does. But Devin is definitely thrilled to have his old crush look at him differently and tell him he’s pretty, 10 years after they knew each other in High School.

To Jarrods surprise he finds Devin very attractive and is also attracted to him. Confused but curious one thing leads to another. They both get in deep and by the end of their month long stay, they now have to figure out where this thing between them will go after they leave the resort and go back to their real lives. And since Jarrod isn’t gay (only for Devin) or is out to the public, Devin is worried for him and how his fans and his team will react, if find out he’s sleeping with a male porn star.

They decide to break it off. Both trying to forget about the other, they stay apart until they start running into each other. Both still feeling the pull between them. When either of them can’t stand being apart anymore, they finally give in and a secret relationship starts. While trying to hide their affair Devin still goes to Jarrod’s games to cheer him on from the stands. So when Jarrod unapologetically comes out during an interview after a game, Devin is shocked and worried.

The tenderness, passion and love between these two was so sweet and deep. This was a great read. 4,5 ⭐️ 2.5 🌶️

The setting is Black Diamond Resort and SPA. A luxurious get away for the rich and famous. Our MCs is here for various reasons. Jarod is the hockey goalie who just made his team miss the playoffs. Devin is a big name in the adult industy but he needs some time off. Once the two meet the realise they know each other from school and start spending time together. I should describe this as a lovely friends to lovers. This is not without angst but fortunately no drama for the sake of it, it all felt true to the story. I really liked it and my rating is 4.5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

These two are real yappers during sex, my goodness 🥵

The pining, yeeish. Made worse by the fact that these two knew the feelings were mutual, but they couldn't be together because..... reasons.

“Why is everything not enough then?”😩😩😩😩😩😩

Ask him, Devin. How am I your everything but it's STILL not enough? Not gonna lie, I low key hated Jarrod a bit during his waffling stage. I understood the why, but I hated that for Dev.

“My preference is you.”-Dev. Always sure. Always constant.

This was really nice. That said, at this point the hockey MC who must stay in the closet until he wins a Stanley Cup at which point he's immediately ready to come out in that very moment is a bit overdone. Or maybe I just like books with bi-awakenings AND sports romance so it's inevitable that I'll keep finding it.

I wish we could mix and match MCs to curate the perfect couples. I'm not saying Jarrod wasn't perfect for Dev. He was. Eventually. (his attitude towards the sex work thing was impeccable throughout, honestly) I'm just saying I'd have loved for Dev to get someone who matched his energy from the jump. Some of the heartbreak he had to hide WHILE being with Jarrod was excruciating to read.

I mean, for example, I'd have loved Shane Hollander to experience being in love with someone like Jarrod who's just as freaked out about being outed as he was. See how much he likes it then. I wonder if such a couple would just date in secret for ever.

That said. I liked this so much that now I have to go back and read the whole series from the start.

Oh, boy. But hey. First world problem.

Another amazing release for this series! I absolute loved this!!
Devin & Jarrod are the sweetest MCs ever and they were so much fun to read whilst also absolutely breaking my heart.
This is so different from the books before, this is resort-side rich people goodness, it has angst but it is pining lovey angst so it was such a nice break from the sadness of the others. It is so emotional, I felt like I wanted to cry through a lot of it. Just wanted to smoosh them together.
These two precious babies deserved everything and I love them.
This was the perfect layout for an actual book for me too, lots of chapters and a mixture of long/short chapters, lil time jumps, 2 epilogues 😭
This was perfect and will be one of my fave books of the year.
It is adorable and fluffy whilst still having the grit that this series needs.
Loved loved loved loved loved it and that's all I have to say!.

Splintered is Isabel Lucero’s entry into the shared Unlucky 13 universe - each book can be read as a complete standalone. Splintered is a MM romance featuring a hockey player and adult entertainer. You can expect a bi-awkaening and a secret/forbidden relationship. Also be prepared for a luscious tropical resort, swoon-worthy second chances, and a healthy dose of angst coupled with sizzling spice. It’s written from a dual, first-person POV.

Devin’s parents are considered Hollywood royalty. When he turned 18, he decided to forge a different path in life by starting out in the adult entertainment industry, much to his parents’ horror. Nearly a decade later, he’s built himself an empire. However, Devin’s feeling the burnout, and he heads to Black Diamond Resort and Spa to try and take a real vacation. Jarrod is the star goalie for San Jose’s NHL team, and he’s escaped to Black Diamond Resort after his team loses in the playoffs. It feels like the entire fan base, as well as the media, blames him for the team’s loss. Devin and Jarrod, acquaintances from high school, don’t expect to run into one another at Black Diamond. Although they were only acquaintances in high school (with Devin possibly having a huge crush on Jarrod), they find themselves spending their solitary vacations together. As the tension mounts and chemistry makes itself evident, the real world is unfortunately awaiting them after their weeks in paradise.

"My heart aches in your absence. It physically hurts sometimes. I think it only beats in hopes of finding the piece you took from it, longing to be whole again."

This was my first story by Isabela Lucero, and I’m so impressed! Although the story did get off to a slower start, once we hit about 35 percent I found myself drawn into Devin and Jarrod’s lovely story! One of the really cool aspects of this book is that it takes place over the span of a year, and I think that really contributed to their happily ever after and the storytelling to get there.

Devin and Jarrod were both lovely, likable characters and they definitely had some angst to get through before happily ever after. The most frustrating part of it was when there were turbulent times, you could understand both perspectives and I felt you were just rooting for them throughout the story. The way the angst hit throughout the book just added to the plot, and was much preferable to the expected third-act breakup. The spice in this book was off the charts! Dev and Jarrod were absolutely sizzling together, and watching Dev help Jarrod discover that side of himself was amazing. Although it was difficult, the ending Lucero gave Jarrod and Dev was so well-deserved and it left me with a smile on my face.

I received an ARC of this book via the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Before beta reading this novel I had only read a short story by this author from an antho but I absolutely loved it so I was incredibly excited when the opportunity to beta read came up. The writing and storyline in Splintered solidified my love for this authors writing and since reading this I have gone on to read many others by her and have loved them all!

This book is another amazing entry in the Unlucky 13 Black Diamond universe. Depending on what you look for in books this story has it all. Sports, bi-awakening, awesome sexy times, really wonderful, easy casual fling and also angst and heartbreak. You’re definitely in for a fun ride with this story!

Jarrod and Devin were really cute together and I loved that they had some past history. Those are always my favourite kinds of stories! I also felt the bi-awakening was done incredibly well! My heart hurt for them during the angsty scenes. I also really appreciated the author not using the miscommunication trope. There was a place it could have happened but it was written perfectly.

It was hard work but they eventually got to their HEA and I loved everything about it along the way! I absolutely recommend this book as well as all others by this author and all the others in the Unlucky 13 series. I can’t wait to read more!

I really loved this book! It's my second by this author and definitely won't be my last. I absolutely binged it in one sitting and was completely absorbed by the plot. I loved these MCs, they have my heart and damn that spice!! Second chance is hard to do right and this author aced it completely, creating that delicious tension and I really loved that the MCs were given the opportunity to work on themselves before working on their relationship and it was so good! The writing was easy to read and kept me entertained the entire time and I can't wait to read more from this author!

THIS WAS SO FREAKING GOOD. I read this in the span of 3 hours in one sitting. I was so locked into this story. These two men were so lovable and I enjoyed watching how easily they reconnected after not seeing each other in 11 years while on vacation.

There is something about a bi-awakening that is always so interesting to see how an author does their take on it. I think this story was handled with such care and I really enjoyed it.

A hockey player (goalie) and a porn star??? PULEEZEEEE Whew the spice? It ATEEE it was so good and I loved every single thing about this story. Isabel has a way with writing her books that are so so enjoyable!

Thank you to the author agency & Isabel for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Devin & Jarrod cross paths while staying at Black Diamond to escape their normal every day lives. The pair haven’t seen each other since high school, and decide to reconnect while at the resort.

The chemistry between them is magnetic, their rekindled friendship turns into more, and island soon turns into their little love bubble. Too bad real life is looming in the distance, and no matter how loved up they may be while at Black Diamond reality is harsh.

Jarrod isn’t out, and doesn’t want his sexuality to distract from the teams playing, and Devin doesn’t want his job as a pornstar to tarnish Jarrod’s reputation. So, the pair go their separate ways, spending months pining over the other, while accidentally bumping into each other randomly because fate has other plans.

*sigh* iI absolutely loved how precious Jarrod and Devin were together, and how they instantly clicked again after so much time apart. & as much as I hated that they had to spend so much time apart before getting their HEA, it was worth the ride!

❤️ARC Review❤️

“My crush never ended. It just reignited the moment I saw you.”

Splintered, by Isabel Lucero, was another wonderful addition to the Unlucky 13 series. My favorite so far in the series (but all the books have been fantastic)!!

Highlights:
❤️friends to lovers
❤️sexual awakening
❤️hockey player/porn star
❤️all the feels
❤️steamy
❤️humor

Jarrod and Devin might be my favorite couple from the series as of now. I’ve loved all of the books, but I connected on a different level with Jarrod and Devin. These two had me in knots with their story and I couldn’t get enough. They had me laughing and swooning throughout the book, and damn were they hot.

Favorite quote(s):
“I stare at him for several seconds, emotion squeezing my heart. I grab onto him and spin us around, pinning him on the mattress below me. I’ve never felt so feral in my life. His words, though romantic and sweet, have turned me into an animal.”

“I don’t know what you’ve done to me,” he whispers huskily into my neck. “You take my breath away while simultaneously granting me exactly what I need to feel alive.”

Each book in this series is a true stand-alone, but I recommend reading them all. I’ve loved this series universe and cannot wait for more!!.

I received a free copy of this book via Indie Author Creative and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Loved Devin and Jarrod's story!!!

Extended:

I loved this story, and I absolutely recommend it!

Devin is a very accomplished gay adult film star. He's been making money moves. Branching out, being a boss, but he's worn out. So he goes to Black Diamond for a little vacation looking for a little peace and quiet. While there, he bumps into someone he hasn't seen since high school, Jarrod. Jarrod, who is now a goalie in the NHL, who just so happens to be at Black Diamond for a little recoup after [redacted].

I truly don't want to give too much away.

Things are idyllic and lovely at Black Diamond, but life can't stay perfect forever. What does love look like off the island? There is a conflict that is 100% understandable, and it sucked watching Jarrod and Devin navigate their feelings, their affection for the other, and [redacted] - at times, it felt hopeless and insurmountable.

I loved so many parts of this book. There were good side characters: Gina, the sister and Corey, the teammate. There were great moments: when Devin wore [redacted at redacted] and the scene with the storm, the airport 💔 so perfect. There were lots of sweet little moments, too, that added up to their love story.

There are sparks, coincidences, rain storms, big moments, and an AIRPORT scene. Y'all know how much I love airport scenes. There's so many feelings happening 💙💙💙 and I love that they get their HEA in the end.

I've loved all the Black Diamond books I've read so far, and that included Splintered! Don't miss out!

Splintered by Isabel Lucero is book 9 in the multi author series Unlucky 13.

This was my first book from Isabel and my heart is still palpitating. Yes, I’ve found my new book boyfriend: Devin. When I read the last pages, I wanted a mini story just about him and his work. Seriously, this book, for me, was all about the characters. I couldn’t get enough of them. The way they were with each other, and with other characters, the way they loved and their friendship was just so beautiful. Also, the mouth on them… ooofff.

The first part of the book (Splintered is split in 3 parts) was EVERYTHING. The character development was ON POINT. I couldn’t get over how gentle both men were and how natural the dialogue felt. Devin is gay, out and proud and Jarrod is slowly discovering that he might not be as straight as he thinks he is. At least, when it comes to his feelings towards Devin. His inner thoughts were so heartfelt, when he was thinking about Devin and what being in Devin’s presence felt like. The butterflies were intense for me. And Devin was just patient and kind, even through his own insecurities. I loved how the connection between both MCs felt so organic. Beautifully done!

The intimacy between Devin and Jarrod was explosive. This one takes a bit of time to start burning, but oh, when the fire ignites, DOES IT EVER BURN! I was so surprised with Jarrod! He just went all in, no questions and I loved that for him. He was also so into Devin, which made everything 150% times better. I loved how expressive and enthusiastic he got. Each scene was so detailed and Isabel was so good with words that not once did I have to reread a sentence to understand the movements she was describing. It was crystal clear in my mind, almost like watching a movie. Flawless!

I loved the texting bits, the pinning, the way the second part of the book was spaced out over many months, only to return with a quick third part, finale, full circle. It was a really rollercoaster and I want to ride it again and again. 5 stars!

This was very good. It was super sweet and spicy with a bit of emotional aspects going on. I loved the relationship between these two, I will say that the back and forth was getting annoying towards the end but they did try their best to have good communication throughout the book so I appreciated them for trying. an overall enjoyable read for the weekend.

This is a MM romance which is steamy AF (5/5🔥) & hit me right in the feels! Not me smiling, thoughtful, angsty, tearing up (but thank God, no ugly crying - much), & emotional in the best way! I love Isabel's books & this 1 is so good. Loved Devlin & Jarrod, devoured the story in 8hrs (over 2days). So happy to get the #ARC!

This standalone series has some amazing authors, but this was my 1st in it.

Devlin (Pornstar, business owner) & Jarrod (NHL player) both came to the resort to get away & rest...They went to high school together & this reunion kindled a sweet friendship. As D's crush roars back, supposedly straight J starts feeling "things". It's so amusing when J finds D's porn omg! The first times are 🔥🔥 hot.

But as feelings bubble & their time together comes to end, can they be anything in the real world?

Omg, this book! I'm glad we get plenty of time (half the book) outside the resort. Ah the angst, loved it man, gave star crossed vibes. These 2 are so mature tho. When they finally give in, I go yayy! Their relationship is lovely, made me ache. The sexy scenes made me bite my lip SO MANY TIMES. Love me a vers couple! A bit of praise kink, dirty talk & sex toys!

Sweet ending & HEA, epilogues 😍. The side characters are great too. Maybe Cory can get a novella 🤭. RTC, worth the read!

Story ratings:

POV: 1st person, DUAL POV
1) The Characters: 5/5
2) Top 3 feels: Omg, THAT, Oooh hot!
3) Story enjoyment: 5+/5
4) Creativity & Conflicts: 4.6/5
5) World build: 4.5/5
6) Relationship: 5/5
7) Steamy scenes: 5/5
8) Levels: Cute+Swoon: 4/5
Angst: 3/5
Dark: 1/5
9) Writing style & pace: 4.7/5
10) Grammar: 5/5

4.5⭐️ 3.5🌶️

I was really surprised by this book. I didn't really have any expectations going in, but I loved it! Jarrod and Devin's story is full of spice, pining, and of course, great love.

Devin is a pornstar and producer/director, a really big name in the industry. While on vacation to find some happiness away from his workaholic life he runs into an old high school classmate, now NHL star, Jarrod. They quickly form a friendship and connection that changes their worlds. I loved their relationship so much. When they were together, it was so genuine and easy. They had immediate chemistry on page even if it was just a friendship at first. When their feelings grew it was such a natural progression. Jarrod had always identified as straight, but he couldn't deny the way he was starting to feel about Devin. On the island everything was great, but of course real life wasn't going to be as easy.

Then there was all the angst and all the pining, and it was amazing. They wanted each other so much and never lost that love. Fate kept throwing them together and forcing them to take a chance on one another. It was a hard fought HEA for these two, but so so worth it.

I've been picking and choosing which books in the Unlucky 13/Black Diamond series to read. I'm not sure what's next for that series, but I'm definitely going to look into more from the author! It was my first from her and I'm curious to see what else she has out.

Read if you like:
• hockey player x pornstar
• secret relationship
• all the pining

3-3.5 stars, rounded. My first book by this author, and it was a success imo. I mainly read this to check out the writing style before her upcoming book that releases today, since that one seems entirely up-my-alley. This, however, wasn’t something that intrigued me at first, premise-wise. I didn’t care that it was an athlete x porn star romance, but after finishing, I can say that the dynamic was fascinating. I thoroughly enjoyed the couple’s time spent on the island, and that enjoyment faded over time when I realized most of their interactions resulted in sex. Like yeah, it makes sense since they went months without physical contact, but still. It was mushy gushy with minimal angst, and I felt as if everything was resolved way too quickly, especially with Devin’s parents. Still, a solid experience.

Devin, porn star, and Jarrod, NHL player, used to go to school together and randomly bump into each other on holiday when they're both trying to get away from their every day lives for a bit.

I really liked this book and their relationship but I did sometimes need to double check whose POV I was reading because my attention would drift and their internal voices sometimes sounded kind of similar.
