A quiet, sheltered, passive girl, Ynith never suspected that the awkward young man she encountered in the library was none other than the Crown Prince Arnsword. Nor would she expect that this baleful character would set his sights upon her as the singular object of his undying affection. But what Ynith could never prepare herself for would be the cost of being loved by a man who is by all rights, evil. A powerful budding Wizard, Ynith’s beau is about to wreak havoc upon the world, and force Ynith to discover facets of herself that she finds terrifying, including dabbling in the magic she has deliberately avoided since childhood. Must Ynith love this man or must she escape him to save herself, and ultimately, her world?
This book was so awesome! I love how Miranda always has strong female leads! I hope there is a sequel to this book so I can live in the fantastical world she created for a few more hours.
This was a slow read in the beginning but eventually got much better. I really enjoyed how the characters were developed and fully understood the slowness in the beginning as it was creating these characters. Ynith was such a fun character and I really felt compassionate with the decisions she has to make, including her relationship with Prince Arnsword.
Typically, these type of stories bore me, but I really loved the use of magic in this romantic book. I also really liked the historical side of this story. Ynith is one of my all time favorite female lead characters. Miranda did such a fantastic job creating these characters.
This cover is absolutely beautiful and the overall story was amazing. It was so fun to follow these characters along in their journeys and the use of good and bad. So much is going on that will absolutely interest you and make you love this even more. This was such a fun read and I’ll definitely recommend this if you love romance mixed with historical.
Huge thank you to Miranda Mayer for sending me this for an honest review. I absolutely enjoyed it and can’t wait to see more from you.
I liked this unusual story with its mix of a historical setting, magic, passion and mayhem. The characters are well developed and probably not always what you would expect. None of the them are clear cut good or evil, but rather have aspects of both, which the author flows into the story seamlessly and the narrator of the audiobook portrays very well. Arnsword is a complex character that is not always likeable and yet he somehow manages to captivate you and it seems easy to forgive his actions. Ynith is a sweet, loving character that you care about from the beginning, but she too has hidden depth and struggles. The narrator did an excellent job of bringing both the characters and the story to life, she gave the characters individual voices and let you feel the desire, desperation, pain and turmoil in their lives. This story has plenty of suspense, action, magic and lots of great characters that you can empathise with, and no matter how they react it seems difficult to judge their actions. The author and narrator created a rich story that will keep you absorbed until the very end.
Why would anyone ever show interest in a quiet, sheltered, passive girl? That’s what Ynith herself would like to know when an unassuming young man makes her the singular object of his considerable affection. Unbeknownst to Ynith, the man turns out to be none other than the Crown Prince Arnsword...also unbeknownst to her is the fact that Arsnword is a powerful young wizard whose fervent goal is to wreak havoc on an unsuspecting planet. As Ynith delves deeper into Arnsword’s dark world, she soon finds herself engaging in the very magic she’s spent her whole life avoiding – but how will she manage when she discovers Arnsword is nothing less than evil incarnate...?
The Wizard King is an intriguing tale of regency romance. In it, author Miranda Mayer does a commendable job of making the reader a captive observer of Ynith’s challenging personal journey. As the young ingénue struggles between her feelings for Arnsword and her responsibility to the world around her, her ongoing internal battles make for quite the page-turning read. Also, the profundity of Mayer’s character development often makes it difficult to reach snap judgments of each player’s actions. Some of the choices they find themselves forced to make are easy to regard from the outside looking in; however, the slightest bit of empathy lent to their predicaments would soften even the most critical of hearts.
The latest standout offering from a proven literary talent, The Wizard King is sure to expand Mayer’s already considerable fan base. A recommended read.
